Yes sir. I've been on a High Violet kick and was wondering when something new was coming. HV is really frown on me over time; just a great downer of an album. Still hate the last 2 songs though.

funny, I didn't like the last 2 either until I saw them done live with the last one turning into a sing-a-long.

All fans of The National and documentary filmmaking must watch Mistaken By Strangers. I saw a screening (at a packed theatre) of the very funny, sometimes sad and overally great film at Toronto's Hot Docs Festival last week. The movie was directed by and co-stars Matt Berninger's lovable loser younger brother Tom.

I think thats quite alright. I don't find the JJ tour to be all that thrilling. Once is enough. Twice was okay. I'm not the person who thinks JJ can do no wrong

The National is a killer live band, whether folks like the music or not. I'm a casual fan, but loved the show I attended in 2010, and my seat was partially obstructed. They can hold their own with any great live band touring today.

We were fortunate enough to see them in the tiny, tiny Bottletree in Birmingham back in 2007 (we were literally 3 feet from them) and I have been a believer ever since.

That's what i don't like about them as well. A mumbling monotone is how I would describe his voice. I only ever liked the song Mistaken for Strangers, I really did make a repeated effort to get into them and it just didn't work out.

Seeing them a week and a half later in Columbus the night before they play Bonnaroo and I can't wait. We'll be just getting back from vaca so this will be a nice way to ease slowly back into reality.

This is part of what makes music so damn interesting. I love Matt's voice and think he writes beautiful haunting songs with a good amount humor and wit. TWFM is my album of the year. But i know there have been bands that others rave about that i just can't get into. even after repeat listening. LCD Soundsystem comes to mind. Only time i get annoyed with an opinion is if no effort was put into it.

I'll be there!
I saw the National twice in the last week. Both times were day-of-show decisions- Mercury Lounge in NYC and Boston Calling Festival. Both were great. I don't count The National among my favorite bands, but every time I've seen them live I've really enjoyed the show. I agree with the earlier poster that the wit and biting cleverness of the lyrics makes me want to dig into their songs. I think the new album is excellent. I also think they are a very polarizing group- many of my friends dislike them. They are literally my wife's LEAST favorite band and I never play around the house.
sweet rich! just gonna get a ticket when i'm in town. kyle you lucky dog seeing them at the Mecury!

I agree with the polarizing thing too. Thankfully, my wife is amongst the crowd that digs them so I don't have to shun their music in my house.
hey Rich what are your seats like? i haven't been there yet and what's available at a decent price seem high up :undecided:
in case anyone sees this and cares, the National show tonight is streaming live on Sirius XM channel 35. And you can sign up for a free 30 day trial instantly. Quality (band and audio-wise) is great so far.
This album is fantastic
saw them at the mann friday.. sensational even if they crowd wasn't.
Tiny Desk Concert...it's awesome

Free show in downtown Toronto this Friday. The National is one of the headliners for this year's North By Northeast (i.e., NXNE) festival. I'm planning on heading over after work. There will be an outdoor screening of The National doc, Mistaken For Strangers, before the gig. I've seen it already and highly recommend checking it out.
Something finally clicked this time when I listened to them. I understand the people who are complaining about the vocals being monotone. I think that was the main reason I couldn't dig them initially. However, I love the vocals now. This band is amazing.
Check out how sick this fan video is:
The National- "Mr. November" *Matt Sings to Little Girl* (HD) Live at Lollapalooza on August 8, 2010 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFHp34jyCw4#ws)
Matt's voice sounds pretty rough on that one but how sweet that he changes the words when he's singing to the little girl.

The roughness of his vocals makes it even better imo.
Fans and non fans should see this movie made by Matt's brother. It's very funny and sweet! So glad it's getting good reviews.

Super personal
Super beautiful after first listen.
Can't wait to dive in further
Definitely digging the new album. Looking forward to the October tour de National - catching shows at the Hollywood Bowl, then San Diego, then up to Berkeley. The wife follows along on my MMJ adventures (OBH 2, 3 & 4; Red Rocks 2015, Nashville 2017) so I figured I could indulge her on this trip! Plus they put on a great show. Seen them at MASSMOCA and the Greek (LA) last year.
Just opened my vinyl delivered today. I really love these guys. I dare say I've almost listened to them more over the past year than MMJ....
Listened to this for the first time last night and again today and I really dig it! They played on Colbert this week as well which was nice to see!
