Title: MMJ Free Atlanta Show April 5, 2013?!?!
Post by: craigtheowl on Mar 11, 2013, 10:48 AM
Just came across this on the NCAA Final 4 website.  It says that My Morning Jacket is opening for The Zack Brown Band in a free show at Centenial park on April 5.  I couldn't believe what I was reading as I ahve heard nothing about them playing any shows in 2013 yet.  Anybody else have info?

My friend just sent me this. So pumped. A free MMJ show and Louisville in the final four could be a perfect weekend for me personally . Hopefully, I can get off work as it says music starts at 3PM on Friday.

It's got to be a Jim show. I really can't see them getting the band rehearsed for one show right as Jim is kicking off his solo tour. Also we haven't heard anything about it on this site. Something isn't right about this.

I agree; but I also think a solo Jim show would be more odd for an event like this.  Looking forward to hearing more details

This is truly bizarre... Looking forward to the full details from the band for sure. As Jacket is listed as an opening act, the crowds should be subdued. Living in ATL, I'll be in and out for this one!

They could have been offered a ridiculous sum to play or thought the exposure was too good to pass up...(even though I think it's Jim by himself, I really want it to be MMJ and true).

Yeah I noticed that, kind of wierd, but hopefully its just until they offically announce the lineup, but they better hurry up because I am sure flights aren't going to be cheap that weekend with the Final Four going on.

It is still on the GA Dome webpage:

http://www.gadome.com/events_ticketing/events/all/1304077.aspx (http://www.gadome.com/events_ticketing/events/all/1304077.aspx)

On the Final 4 website they have the event on the schedule (AT&T Block Party) at the same time as the GA Dome site, but don't list the performers. That being said, the performers they list for Saturday and Sunday do match between the 2 sites.

http://www.ncaa.com/final-four# (http://www.ncaa.com/final-four#)!big_dance

I think this is legit and really made my day! Hopefully something official will be on the MMJ site soon.

pretty sure this is a no...first off the band is not together right now at all...plus we haven't heard anything official from the band. they always announce shows way ahead of time.  now i will be the first one to tell you it will be really awesome if they do play and I'll be right there to watch...just think we would have had something official by now. not to mention jim is really involved with his solo album right now so I don't think he would take a break from that to do a very spontaneous mmj show. pretty sure someone here would know for sure with a little less than 3 weeks away

I actually enjoyed Zac Brown Band at Bonnaroo the one year I got to see them. I think they have played there 3 different years. Yes they have some crappy country radio pop songs, but they also jam out and actually play. I would much rather see them over anyone playing Saturday. Plus they do some kickass covers.

I will be more than happy to generously give any Zac Brown fans the opportunity to see their favorite band without my presence. I've got a date with Richard Thompson in Nashville the next night, so I'll be interested in getting as far down the road back to TN that evening after Jacket plays. I hope we get a full show. With only three bands, we should.

My wife drug me to Zac Brown when he played Deluna Fest last year.  I am by no means a fan, but there are a lot worse bands to get stuck seeing (like Foo Fighters ).  Anwyay, as it was said, he plays some pretty good and unexpected covers.  I would not at all be surprised if he threw in a Jacket cover.  He did a good job of making his covers relevant to the kind of music that was at Deluna Fest.

I can't believe this actually happened. I for one will be leaving after MMJ plays because I think Zac Brown should not be headlining this.

There has to be a reason as to why MMJ chose Atlanta and this concert series to play their "only" show... I mean I'm glad they chose ATL since I live here but still amazed this is happening.

Post by: scosby2 on Mar 19, 2013, 04:52 PM
love it when I'm wrong...i guess the delay in the announcement was either due to contract issues or just the fact that this is to really try to open up the band to a newer crowd bc if you think about it there are gonna be tons and tons of people already in atlanta for the final four...what better way to get exposure to that crowd than a free show. so it's not like they need the band's fans flying in from all over the country to fill the venue up...hence just the two-three week notice...nice marketing strategy if you ask me...see you guys there

Maybe Jim and Patrick have plans to stick around and are hoping see their hometown Cardinals in the Final Four.

I'd give some serious thought to making the trip down for this, but I'm sure whatever rooms aren't already booked for the Final Four will either be in a shitty place or super $$$$$, maybe both!

I imagine that this will be a very different experience than attending a regular MMJ show. Having said that, I'm excited about it. It may be our one show for the year. The start time is 3pm and originally they only had three bands posted. I really hope this means the Jacket comes on by 6 and they get at least two hours or more to play. It would be great if we got work as to what time the band is scheduled to play. I'm getting there early no matter what. I just want to know how long I have to wait to get to see them.

I thought I read somewhere that MMJ were playing 3 west coast dates (Cali, Wash and Oregon)  in April or May??? Seemed sort of odd because they were intertwined with one of Jim's solo dates...so maybe it's just my imagination.  Does anyone else know?

Anyway, I agree with Fully.  I can't make the show in Atlanta, though I would totally dig going with my son who is in college and a huge basketball fan!  But I would only stay for MMJ.  I've heard good things about Zac, but not interested in staying for that.  Hope ya'll have a great time at the show  But really, how can you not when it's MMJ?

I havent heard that, but I can't imagine. unless they intertwine with Jims west coast dates, so there isnt any extra traveling. Still though, I would think that would hurt Jims solo show turn outs.

So I just decided to make a quick trip of this.  Flying in early in the morning around 8 or so and flying out at 9:45 as I anticipate Jacket playing about 1.5 hours or so and am definately not staying for Zac Brown.  I just couldn't pass it up.  So now we just have to work on a meet up some place close by prior to the long wait in line to make sure theres a good spot close up.  Any thoughts? Probably could do a thread just on this.

I've been told that the following places are close by:
the Biergarten (2blocks away with a nearby Marta stop
Taco Mac (these last two are near the Omni/CNN Center with a Marta stop as well)
Park Bar

I don't know much about the area. It's been awhile since I've been there. I'm not really sure what time we'll get in town yet, but I imagine that we'll park at a Marta station and take the train in. I'm pretty sure scosby will want to line up ASAP, but he may allow us to eat. Pre-show anxiety runs high. Are you coming by yourself, Manonthemoon or will your lovely wife be with you?

Well, if we get on the rail that's great, but with as many people as are expected to be there, we may not. I've had just as much fun not on the rail as I have on the rail. It's just a different experience.

I'll be flying solo this go around as the wife is busy with work and can't get away, but thanks for asking. As far as places and location anything would be fine for me and preferrably close to the park or marta as I'll be taking that in from the airport.  I checked out the centennial park website and they have something called Googie Burger listed as close by as well.  I definately want to line up sort of early as well, but didn't know what type of crowd to expect as I cant say I am familiar with Zac Brown's fans.  As long as I end up sort of close, like first 3 or 4 rows I usually enjoy those shows the best just like the Cap series.  I was thinking of eating early and possibly tying on a few before noon since I am getting in so early and then going to wait in line around noon or so. I am sure we'll be able to get a decent group of us close up, hopefully.

Just a heads up that when I went to the Final Four Big Dance in 2011, there was a pretty big crowd early in the day. But since alot of people were just there since it was free and not necessarily to see the bands, there was alot more movement up front than usual with people leaving to get drinks and food so it wasn't hard to work your way up to the front at all.

By the way, that year it was Panic at the Disco --> Kings of Leon. Still one of the strangest mix of music/crowds I've experienced. *Shudders* At least they got it right this year

Great! Y'all can watch from home.

Is there anyone from Atlanta (Davymac?) who has gone to something here before? If so, where would you recommend entering the park. Is it better to get off the Marta at Peachtree Center or the Georgia Dome station? Where are big stages usually set up. I'd love to know a little more about the set up before we get there.
Title: Re: MMJ Free Atlanta Show April 5, 2013?!?!

Fully,
Not sure where the entrance points will be for this but the stage was set up before at the lower (north) end closer to Baker St. where the World of Coke is.  For Marta it just depends on where you are coming from.  The Dome and Peachtree are on separate lines, they are both close so it's not worth changing trains for, I'll be coming from the north so I'll use Peachtree.
There is a pretty good picture of the last concert on the Centennial Park website.

Fully, I actually hate Atlanta, and spend as little time as possible there.  If the boys ever come back to Athens I can be of more help.  I am a little familiar with the area, but I really have no idea how they are going to layout the stage...that biergarten sounds like a cool place to maybe meet up? That timeframe is gonna be tight, but not out of the question... Hartsfield is one of the largest/busiest airports in the world and Marta is no longer known for its efficiency. If you're going for it, make sure to check in online or use the available kiosks at entry. My wife and I arrived 45 min early and made our flight out to Red Rocks last year...

http://www.itsmarta.com/ (http://www.itsmarta.com/)

It will take you roughly 20 minutes to get from FIVE POINTS to the airport on Marta if the train runs on schedule. I would recommend going on foot from the park to catch the SOUTHBOUND TRAIN at FIVE POINTS so that you don't have to change trains. Also, keep in mind that the Southbound train that you would need to catch runs at 8:44pm... The next train is at 9:04pm. Good luck and I hope this was of some help

If the park opens at 3 and the opening band doesn't come on until 445, then what happens for the hour 45 minutes in between? Do they have other stuff going on in the park as well??  Also, how does MMJ only get 15 more minutes to play than the opener? That's crap, but I guess I can't complain about a free show especially on their low activity year.

Little 5 Points would be a good place to kick around for a few hours prior to the show... Great record store @ Criminal Records, vintage retail, plenty of bars (ie: The Vortex and Porter Beer bar), really cool eclectic shopping, killer pizza @ Savage, classic ATL music venues, etc.)... it's a small neighborhood in ATL and all of these places are right next to each other. It's a colorful place with great people watching to say the least

L5P is only a couple of miles from the 5 points Marta exit (do NOT confuse the 5 points Marta stop with L5P). You'll be safe to walk at the hours that you will be there, but a cab will be easy and cheap at that time of day so I would recommend it.

If I were only in ATL for a few hours I would def be going to L5P. You can pack a lot in with easy on foot travel here and it's simply a cool borough. Enjoy!

just an fyi from an ATL resident...

Prepare ahead of time for ridiculous traffic all over the city....this event, the final four, Braves opening week and a Hawks game are all going down. It will be absurd.

The park has had concerts before but I think they are in over their heads with MMJ, ZBB and DMB. The place will be slammed and porta-potty lines will be a good 30+ min long. Book it.

Actually, NCAA event....they even sell booze?

Not sure about where this venue is located in relation to where the Final Four is played, but I was at the Final Four in Houston in 2011, and the concert was held at a downtown green area, a little bit a ways from the stadium where the games are played. Kings of Leon, Uncle Kracker, Sublime with some lead singer, and Kenny Chesney were the shows. It was horrendous to say the least, but they absolutely sold beer (I know because it was the only possible way to make it through this experience). They don't sell beer at the final four stadium because it's NCAA, but my bet is there is alcohol at the show.

Alcohol at this show is gonna make the crowd just like the secret Jim show in Nashville times 100. Bunch of loud mouthed, uninterested people who are fiddling on their cell phones. The alcoholics for Zac Brown won't help the cause either. At least all of us true fans will be up front away from most nuisances.

Also, with all of the traffic stated and wanting to be front row, I'll probably have to leave Tennessee at 8am. :undecided:

In regards to the setlist, especially a festival setlist, a few rarities aren't entirely out of the question

According to my brief research, Beale Street got The Way That He Sings and Phone Went West, Jazz Fest also got The Way That He Sings, Werchter got The Bear and full Run Thru, Hop Farm got Phone and Librarian, Newport got The Way and Bermuda Highway. Maybe if there's a song a song or two we'd all like to hear, a few twitter requests to the band will have them incorporate it into their set considering it may be their only concert until next spring.  :drum:

I'm still really wanting to go to this show, but I'm not so sure my car is up to it. Is there anybody who might consider meeting me part way down the road and letting me ride along to the show? This would really work out for me if anybody in Kentucky or Tennessee could help me out - or even if you are driving down from further up north. I live in the center of Kentucky near Elizabethtown and could meet just about anywhere along I-65, including Louisville, Elizabethtown, or Bowling Green, Kentucky. Also, I have a brother in Nashville and could leave my car at his place for all the Tennessee folks who may be going. I would help out with the gas from where ever we might meet up and back. I could stay over night or could come back that same night. It doesn't matter, however, I would rather come on back that night. Please keep me in mind if this seems possible.

Yeah I don't know of any NCAA sanctioned venue that allows alcohol. Penn State certainly doesn't and the handful of other Big 10 stadiums I've been to don't either. Also, back in the day a few friends of mine saw Metallica at the Horseshoe and guess what? The booze flowed like mud there too.

OK, due to a different trip I had next weekend falling through and having other plans that bring me relatively close to Atlanta anyway, I could now really make this show work.

Obviously it sounds great to see MMJ and totally unexpected, but I'm worried that this whole thing might be a bit of a nightmare (huge free show, MMJ as an opening act, etc.) which feels a bit hard after the run of shows we just had at the end of last year.

So, anyone want to help a conflicted Whippy out and convince me that I should make this happen?

Whippy, you might want to see what the forecast is for Friday. I just noticed that Thursday is going to be rainy supposedly. That's going to be a long day in the rain particularly if it is as cool as it has been this week.

OK, so you're telling someone who waited outside roughly 6 hours each day through freezing temperatures, rain, and snow in Port Chester, NY in December to be concerned about a little rain in April in Atlanta.

As far as encouraging you to go, this might be the one and only MMJ show for 2013. Hopefully not, but that's reason enough to go if you can. I know I'd be there if I could.

As if I'm going to miss it, I just wanted Whippy to know that the weather may not be sunshine and warm. We've had a pretty cold spring here in the south. It's making up for our lack of winter weather. I'll see you with my raincoat and my rubbers, Whippy.

Good for you.  Awesome.  I know expectations are realistic and it may not be the ideal deal (shorter set with more "hits," big crowd, Atlanta's cold rain, etc), but I think the show will exceed them.  And it's not like it's the week after the PC run.... it's been three months.

I was just looking forward, and that Atlanta seems like it might be all we get from them for the rest of the year. Hopefully they give us some summer/fall shows. They sure kicked off 2013 the right way, here's hoping they close it right too.

Kyle posted this a little while back:

from AT&T's press release

As a NCAA Corporate Champion, AT&T continues to connect our fans with their interests and passions — fans of all ages will enjoy the music and the experience of the AT&T Block Party headlined by Zac Brown Band," said Jamie Kerr, Director, AT&T Corporate Sponsorships. "We have a number of fun and interactive activities planned throughout the week for fans in Atlanta and for those following the events online and via social media channels including a live stream of the concert on the AT&T Facebook page.

I've never seen anything live streamed on a fb page before, so I hope it's ok quality.  I guess they will give more info as the date gets closer?

Me, too, and jealous, though I lucked out with the free Jim and Carl show in Keene, NH last October, so you can enjoy this guilt-free.

I'm going to guess the guys are gonna love getting together after months apart and really blow Olympic Park away.  It may be a fairly typical fest-like set, but its likely gonna creat some new fans.

I wish I could watch the webcast, but I'm going to be playing some MMJ tunes at a battle of the bands at that time.  If anyone can manage a video and/or audio recording of this, I'd appreciate it.

I'm so dang excited about this concert. When does this ever happen? My favorite band in the whole world, playing in my city, and for free? Whaaaat?

This is almost too good to be true - as in a small part of me thinks that we'll all get down there and the announcer will be like "MMJ couldn't make it but in their place we'll be rockin' to live music from "Train". In which case I will just go home and cry myself to sleep.

Would love to meet some of you guys and gals from the forum. Is anyone getting together before or after the show?

Also, lpkell2145, I've heard talk that there is some sort of Beergarden near the park. I'm not sure how things are going to work, but perhaps we'll meet there ahead of the gates opening. Of course if it is pouring down raining, I'm sure we'll be there longer than if the weather turns out nice.

I'm still hoping somebody out there could let me share the ride down to Atlanta. If there is anyone who has room in their car and could use some help with the gas, just send me a PM.

Thanks you all. Have a great time at the show. I'll be watching on the Interweb if I can't make it down there myself.

White... I have a flight booked, but last minute a girl I work with is saying she wants to go, so we're driving down (from Louisville). She's pretty unreliable, but today I'm making her commit one way or the other, because I need to cancel the flight today if I don't need to use it. If she ends up driving, I'm sure she wouldn't mind picking you up. We plan on leaving pretty early since its 6 hours from us. I'll let you know one way or the other tonight.

Thanks for thinking of me! That sounds great. I'll be driving up to Louisville to get my "check engine" light looked at tomorrow. It has been that way for about a month, and I haven't had any problems driving my 80 mile round trip commute each Mon. through Fri. (It did this last summer, and I hope it isn't anything that will cost me thousands and thousands of dollars.) Anyway, I'm sure I could meet anywhere from Louisville to Elizabethtown to Bowling Green or anywhere else along the way that is convenient.

Thanks again for keeping me in mind.

Battle of the Bands? What is this all about?

[yac'd]For the second year, I'm teaming up with another teacher and tackling a few songs for a Battle of the Bands to support our local SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.  One of my colleagues lost her son to suicide and heads this event.  This year, Jacob (acoustic and electric guitar) and I (OM200m and QChord Omnichords) are tackling these songs:

Touch Me 2 instrumental intro > Wonderful Man
The Old Apartment (Barenaked Ladies)
Let It Be

I'm nervous as hell but it gets a lot of kids to come when they think they'll see two of their teachers try to play rock star.[/yac'd]

The forcaste says 60 with spotty showers, not the best, but at least it'll be warm.  Getting really psyched for this show, can't believe its only 2 days away.

I'm freakin out! Friday needs to hurry up...what if they drop a new song or something crazy! didnt they start playing circuital (song) several months before the album?

I think Circuital was like 8 months or so before the album. I bet this show is gonna be basically Jazz fest 2012 set.

I think they played Wonderful about 13 months prior to the Circuital release.

What are yall thinking is the opener? Surely they won't do Victory Dance so I'm guessing its Wordless.

I wish they would add Leaving on a Jet Plane to their show. That song was just made for Jim's voice.

I think Circuital is a pretty likely opener, given they opened the last two shows with it (New Years and Asbury Park).  I'd love to see One Big Holiday as the opener, instead of as the final song.

I'm guessing no chance with it being webcast, this is a one off show, and they aren't headlining. But that doesn't mean I wouldn't take a new.

Wonderful was actually around about 3 or 4 years prior to Circuital. Jim played it at St. David's Church at SXSW in 2008 and quite a few other times as well. Said he never could quite find the right album to put it on until it just fit on Circuital...and I'm going with a Circuital or Off the Record opener...if they wanted to mix things up while still hitting the mainstream crowd up I'm leaning towards The Way That He Sings as an opener, might sound crazy but they played it on Letterman in 2010 right before T5 and definitely is the most mainstream of the not-so-mainstream songs...plus it makes for a good opener

:drum:

Also, as the show is outdoors in downtown ATL, lyrically Run Thru would be an appropriate choice.

Well, just don't...  They only have 75-90 minutes.

Still, how awesome is this?

The weather down here SUCKS BALLS right now but tomorrow morning it's supposed to turn around and be freakin' beautiful by tomorrow night.

MMJ takes the stage @ 7pm but it's GOING TO FILL UP BEFORE THEN so don't be too late fartin' around in a bar....

Maybe they will run with the sports them and do a cover of "Eye of the Tiger."  Kidding obviously but if any band could wring some awesome out of that horrid song it would be MMJ.

Hell, they could probably even cover "We Built this City" and I would like it.  Ok, well maybe not.

Haha nice.

I am hoping they wear full Louisville Cardinals Basketball unis on stage. Would have to be a "throwback" because I am not a huge fan of the camo. Maybe even put together some individual band member introductions over the PA and smoke machines when they are introduced. Tom could wear the white Colonel Sanders Pitino suit. Then they should play an exhibition game of "Bonus Sandwich" during half time on Saturday.

It is almost that time. Maybe the rain will detour the rednecks and panhandlers. I am guessing if Zac Brown guests it will be on something by The Band as they both cover them religously. How abou an Allman Brothers cover since we are in Georgia. I would also think Jim will play a song off his new album. Solo or with the band? I am not too familiar with Marta. Can one just buy a day ticket at any location?

I would actually love that a lot. The suspense is killing me because anything could happen. I mean, when's the last time ever really opened for a band like this? It's weird, and it's awesome too because of some underlying possibilities. They may kick out a total southern vibe to coincide with the ZBB deal, which would definitely include TTF & AD tracks. If the band does play a typical festival setlist, I hope they at least throw in a few rarities for us deeply devoted folk. First of all, they are so not playing this.  Second of all, if they did...I would slit my wrists for having not been there!

No doubt they are playing something with a Kentucky reference...I am guessing Nashville to Kentucky over I Will Be There When You Die?  Or maybe neither?  There are going to be 150,000 people there and if they couldn't spice up the Jazz Fest setlist I don't see how this one is going to be any juicier.  But then again, what the fuck do I know?  I'm talking out both sides of my mouth right now.  I feel like Ed Grimley when he's talking about meeting Pat Sajak.  I have no idea what is going on.

But what I do know is that I am like a kid on Xmas eve.  Seeing MMJ in my living room tomorrow makes me one happy camper!  Last show was Greek in Sept so I am dying to see the boys, SEE being the operative word!

Lookin' for a appropriate cover & some love being thrown the Cardinal's way.

Psyched that my kids all get to go.  My middle boy knows all the words to the last 2 records...  Hoping for a heavy does of those.  Black Metal, Victory Dance, TIG2S 1&2,
(not my favorites but I've seen em 25 times so this one is for the kiddos!)
Would LOVE to hear The Bear or Honest Man!

:dru

ps:  I'll be recording the whole set for sharing.
Have a great time especially with your kids.  It's so cool to have more than one generation into MMJ.
What time do they come on?  Can't wait to see your recording.  To all the roll call fans going, especially you dear fully - have a great time and drink a beer/shot for me or a toke............just saying : :

i know this is streaming, but the show is put on by uverse.  does anyone know if it will be broadcast on uverse or just online?

worst weekend ever.  my cards are in the final four and my band is playing on friday.  i HAVE to be in orlando from sun-fri next week for work, so what do i do?  flight from orlando to atl on monday afternoon to watch the national championship then back to orlando at 7 AM on tuesday morning.

its my only option, i would much prefer to be in the ville when the cards win, but i guess being there is the next best thing.

I think it was a perfect set for the event. I really wanted The Bear, and Dondonte to blow em away. If they played country stuff it would have upstaged the headliner, based on the first 5 Zac Brown songs.

Even tho it was a shorter set than normal and a festival show with a standard setlist, the boys still brought the energy and had to have made a lot of new fans tonight.  Even their standard shows will blow away the best of most bands out there. Not many other live acts in their league.

Glad I got to see it.

I enjoyed it very much too, and it has me wanting more shows ASAP, but not with you on HOTBM.  The only time I won't complain about getting that one is when there are horns on stage, and some backup singers too. Not a fan of that stuff being sampled in at a live show at all.

I enjoyed seeing the band again and I cant complain with a free show, but uggh these festival setlists. When will I hear my "War Begun" "I Will Sing You Songs" "They Ran" or "Knot Comes Loose"?? I told Yakeroo the only solution is to take a trip to Red Rocks.

As for the show, there was a lot of energy, but Jim's vocals seemed really low to me. The audio guys just couldn't find the right balance; however the bass was excellent. I completed the trivia and hope to win the signed guitar. The questions they asked the two frat guys were far too easy. I would've taken that one 3-0.

I also stayed for Zac Brown. He put on an excellent show. Played "Devil Went Down To Georgia" and "Enter Sandman"   A lot of hate for no reason. It was Zac Brown Band not Jason Aldean...big difference!

There was the most awesome kid who waited with us and hung Putin the rail with us. He was 14 and has already seen 40 shows. He had even made it to Pearl Jam's rail. Along with him was his friend who was going to his first show ever. It was like meeting a young Whippy or Penny Lane.

As far as the show, it was a standard setlist, but the band played well even amid frustrations with the mix and Jim's mic stand. I would enjoy seeing a rip of the live stream did anyone capture that?

Also, I hope manonthemoon made his plane. We had a great group to hang out with, and met several new people. The crowd was interesting to say the least. Very dedicated Zac Brown fans.

That was awesome, made the decision about 11am Friday and made the 4.5 hour drive down to Atlanta for the show from North Alabama. Ended up on the rail right in front of Carl. The crowd was so-so, a lot of people were just there to be there. I stayed in the same spot for ZBB, I was not that impressed (i'm not a big country fan) and i thought MMJ put on a much higher energy and headliner worthy show.

Excited for Muse tonight, hope to grab the same spot.. but it'll be difficult. They are only playing an hour for some reason.

Oh,. my dad captured the audio of the stream (minus a bit of the opening song) and I'll try and post it when i get back Sunday or Monday.

Agree on all points (and still laughing about Jim's finger points) - I'm guessing $ from NCAA was too good to turn down - and it was a shrewd decision to play as an opener to this audience.  They pushed greatest hits out to big, young audience, blew away the headliner, and gave the faithful a little spring time nugget to keep us going in an otherwise quiet year (but wait for Fall!!!)

Also agree on Jim's mic - he looked pissed off and couldn't get them to bring him up in he mix.

I was there on the rail, and it was great to see the guys again, but I would not put it as one of their best shows. That may come from me being spoiled by longer shows but also the guys seemed frustrated by the sound mix. Jim tried to get them to turn it up over and over.

Don't get me wrong I enjoyed the hell out if it and was great to see them but I prefer a regular MMJ concert to the festival type.

For those in attendance or missed the webcast, you could actually choose which camera to watch by clicking either "stage cam" or "fan cam" or another option or two that I forgot what they titled.

It was great to see, festival setlist or not.  I don't see them ever busting out Evelyn or obscure songs at a big, free festival.  Hopefully they're saving that for another three night run somewhere.

I really enjoyed watching the set via livestream. There was at one point a close up of Scosby rocking out, and of course I recognized Fully and Johnny all at the rail. y'all were rocking the hell out.

I had such an awesome experience watching the live stream. My best friend who I took to both our first Jacket show together now live across the country together. To "watch the show together", we both live streamed it on our computers and had Skype set up as well. We had several beers and other show treats "together" and we would randomly look at our Skype screens to see eachother rocking the hell out.

Maybe one of the coolest concert experiences I have had with someone. All in all a high energy set that made some new fans! Now I want more though.

for a year of no MMJ, I feel that we and some others have had a pretty good year so far between this and nashville jim show

I'll see ya, and raise you an Asbury, Johnny/Brenda's, and  a Sleep No More!  just kidding, and agree that for what was supposed to be a year of no MMJ, we have been treated pretty damn good so far in 2013.

I also enjoyed the set. About the set list I expected, but thought they might throw in a cover for the crowd that was no familiar with their music. Rocket man or Rock the Casbah maybe. Still, free show in my hometown by the best band in the world. No complaints here.

The bass was so loud last night. When they hit the first low note on Victory Dance I could feel my whole body vibrating. Good thing I don't wear a pacemaker.

My favorite part of the show was scosby going apeshit when Gideon was plaing and all the strobes and the stars were coming towards us. He decided to take probably 50 pics right after another. Then this am he texts me and says I must have taken 200 pics last night. He was insane in a good way!  Had so much fun and got a free unexpected show in as well. Fest setlist or not, it was a great show. And let's be clear, they were playing to win the hearts of more fans last night and surely they did. Ignore my bad grammar, I'm too tired right now to care.

way too much fingering going on tonight..frat boys carry germs, ya know!
You're just jealous, admit it!!!

Very much enjoyed the livestream - really great sound and video.  Ms GO4IT and I were rocking out in my computer room with nice sound system.

It wasn't a hard-core's ideal set but it was appropriate for this audience, I enjoyed it very much, and who can complain about a show with Black Metal!!!

I enjoyed it very much too, and it has me wanting more shows ASAP, but not with you on HOTBM.  The only time I won't complain about getting that one is when there are horns on stage, and some backup singers too. Not a fan of that stuff being sampled in at a live show at all.
Funny you should bring that up about HOTBM.

When they were playing this on the livestream last night I said to Ms GO4IT that this would be so much better live if they had a group of women singers like the original, the originals at the Louisville opening for Circuital, and the following, filmed in Nov, 2011, just a couple of days before I saw them in Birmingham:
My Morning Jacket - Holding On To Black Metal (Jools Holland) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPU2HHAEzOE#ws)
(I used to know the name of this group of back-up singers in the UK, but now I can't find it. Help!)

I don't know why they don't try to hook up with local singers more often for HOTBM at their shows - it makes such a difference and I'm sure a lot of local singers would die for the chance to do this.

I've said this many times. Bringing in some local horns might be tough, and require a decent rehearsal, but surely even a local high school chorus could pull off the woh, woh, woh, woh's without too much trouble.

Hell when I saw the Stones in  December they brought in a local chorus for the intro to You Can't Always  Get  What You Want, and it was great. I'm sure they had to rehearse that, as there's much more to it, but they could've sampled that in if they wanted, but chose to bring singers on stage.

I love this band, and will take seeing them live however they choose to play their tunes, over not seeing them. I'm just not a fan of  anything being sampled in by not just them, but any band I like, and see live.

For the record, it's not really sampled as in "press play". Each part of the phrase  is mapped to individual keys and Bo exerts a considerable amount of effort and skill to perform all that stuff. It's a pretty cool approach that really keeps it organic and means no click tracks ever.
I mean choirs and horns are sweet but not always realistic logistically.

Yeah, I know it's not actually "sampled". Probably should've put that differently. Definitely nothing against Bo, but I would still rather hear those backing vocals performed live on stage.  It just always seems really weird to me to hear all that, but not actually see anyone at a mic doing it.

I've definitely enjoyed the song more when I've seen it performed with horns on stage, and agreed that the  choirs, and horns are not always a realistic option, but it would be cool to see at least some singers on it more often though.

Awesome, thanks for the torrent!

I thought the show was great.  Pretty standard festival set, but I can't complain about a free show 20 minutes from my house.  My wife and I took our 2.5 year old and hung near the back under a huge tree with a few other couples who had kids and they all played together and had a blast.  My son got quite a few compliments and high fives for his MMJ shirt and it was great getting to introduce him to a concert setting at a free show for a band he already loves.  Part of me thinks MMJ should have closed the show, but a bigger part of me is super-excited they played so early and we were able to take our son and still get him home and in bed at a decent hour.

I have to say that even though I really wanted them to play longer and headline that it was really nice being able to leave at nine and then get to Birmingham by midnight - particularly  since I had left TN at 6am.

My BIG question, for those of you who were there, is,what was the reactions of ZBB fans to MMJ?Were most reluctant to give them props because they were the opener, or were some starstruck and amazed, like they should have been. I could only handle 4 or 5 of their songs on the webcast before I got bored and thought it was Cheese Country. If they toned it down, they might be a lot better.

Being on the rail, it was hard to get too much sense of the crowd, but there was a definite throng of ZBB fans that were working their way toward the front during MMJ's set and were pretty uninterested in/unphased by MMJ.  Someone who was further back in the crowd could probably give a better answer.

I'll say this, though, after being in a ZBB crowd, I never, ever want to be in something like that again.  Those people freaking sucked.

They are very similar to the people who go see any mainstream country act. I will say that I didn't mind listening to his sound check. The boredom during the manufactured sound of the opening act Saints of Velour was not enjoyable. I was completely fine with leaving after Jacket. After talking with Whippy, I do think that ZBB could sell dental insurance in their merch store as a public service to their fans. Lots of missing teeth which I had to assure Whippy is not a common thing in the south. In fact, I know lots of people who have all of their teeth - old people excluded for obvious reasons.

Never been to a mainstream country show. The closest I could say would be the Jayhawks, or DBT, which were pretty typical MMJ type crowd. ( just had an image of a Louris/James duet, and got chills) On second thought DBT fans were a little more redneck, but not in a bad way.

I went to a Rascal Flatts show one time so my daughter could see Taylor Swift open for them. There was a very similar crowd there. Then there was the time I saw George Jones at a Walking Horse arena. Talk about missing teeth. It was one of my favorite shows for the colorful crowd alone. Great grandmothers without bras or dentures. Men in overalls and no shirt (it's sexier if they have a large belly). It just doesn't get better than that. High percentage of chewing tobacco products in that show. We had to be careful not to pick up our neighbor's spit cup when we put our beverages down. I'm not exaggerating about this at all.

Well, this just reenforces my impression of MMJ crowds. Nothing like them. I have taken about 10 friends and family to MMJ shows, aged 17-57, and they ALL remark on what an eclectic and friendly crowd. 35 years of concerts. No audience better.

The young kid was awesome, glad they finally brought up some MMJ merch as I think he ended up with a signed CD that he was stoked about.

Overall I had a blast and was really excited about the setlist given you knew it was going to be bigger more newer songs that are a little more fast paced given the crowd.  I thought they did a great job going heavy on Z and the only song that was a little bit of a let down for me was First Light.  But anytime I get Anytime I can't complain, love that song, plus the base on VD was insane being on the rail.

Thanks for asking, Fully, I did make my plane even though I was sprinting to the gate during the final boarding call on my bum knee from falling down the hill earlier on the wet grass.  Totally worth it though, just meant a lot of ice and elevation this weekend.

It was great seeing Whippy, Fully, and Seth again and meeting Yackaroo and Megg33etta(I think).  Totally worth the trip down.

Dont stop, Dont stop.

As far as the crowd goes most of the people who showed up early were MMJ fans, so the closest to the stage were those.  I am sure more ZB fans showed up later on, but didn't really end up talking with any or meeting any really.  Just a huge amount of people in the park so was hard to move around in general.  Of course I come from an area where country is king, but the most country show I've been to other than bluegrass which my father likes, is DBT so I didn't see too much of a difference between those and most of the people at the show.  Of course the funny thing was the CSC staff guy who was right near us and was talking about how he figured there would be fights on Saturday night since Luda was preforming, so it could be worse.

My understanding is that this is a MOV file and so it won't play until the download is complete. The fact that we all freeze at 95.7% is a new one on me and suggests the file is faulty.

I was able to open my 95.8% download, but it was having some pretty major glitches. I tried to open it with Windows Media Player, but it faulted out after just a few seconds. RealPlayer and QuickTime Player did better. They both opened the file, but the sound would drop out some and there was an occasional loud "white noise" sound.

I can't get it to play in VLC, so I'm hoping you're right and it needs to be completely downloaded.

You just gave me my new signature. I don't know why I hadn't already thought of it.

I'm so glad your knee isn't badly damaged. As awesome as watching you soar through the air  was - I mean you were really vertical for several seconds  - I really worried that you had hurt yourself.  Also thrilled you made your flight. It was great hanging out with you. I particularly feel bonded to you after making it through Saints of Velour or whatever their name was. rjlemons, Holls, the guy beside scosby was pretty awesome to hang out with too. All in all, we had a great group of people on the rail.

Not really bad at all just lots of swelling, but pretty much back to normal today.  Definately enjoyed the company, can't wait to do it again.  But will definately add St.s of Velour to the long list of bands I never need to see again, ever.

I was able to get the video working perfectly as well but with no sound.  I'll have to work on that tonight.  I was able to spot myself though.  That was a fun and impressive set.  It was so crowded trying to leave after MMJ finished.  I heard the Zac Brown folks asking where everyone was going.  I think they thought everyone was there to see Zac.

I didn't even test the file before dropping it into DVD Flick, which converts the .mov file into videoTS files to burn a DVD.  It was running overnight and still going this morning, so I'll report back if I have success.  I prefer to watch these things on the home theater system when I can.  DVD Flick did recognize an audio track, so fingers crossed...

I just watched it with Quicktime. Makes me sad to think this is the last show for a good while. I was pleased with how well the crowd finally started getting into it. It was hard to tell where we were. We had to turn around every time Jim went strutting down the catwalk. Also, I could see Carl better on the webcast. That catwalk really cut our vision line down. (Please grow your hair back out, Carl. It looked so hot at The Basement in February with that knit cap on - not that this is a bad haircut)

did you guys get there super-early and have your pick of the rail?   How did you end up where you were?   It seemed (hindsight being 20-20) that what looked like a great spot may not have been as good as nearer the catwalk.

We were there way early, but there were four entrances where they let everyone in at the same time. It probably would have been nice to be right on catwalk, but we had a great view of Tom, Bo, Patrick, and Jim while he was singing and when he got stressed about his mic issues.

I noticed his hair was shorter as well, and I also thought that he looked super cool with his cap and long hair at the basement show.

Hello Jacketeers. J/k

So this is my first post. I'm already downloading the torrent so graciously uploaded for this site. Thanks so much!!

This was my 5th show. And it was exactly like the first four in that I came away feeling incredibly lifted. I had listened to Okokonokis before my first show a few years ago, but seeing the live show really cemented it for me - much like it did for my other favorite band, Phish.

Anyway, after this, my 5th show, I have turned a corner. I think this show finally cemented MMJ with the wife too (Deadhead). She's always enjoyed the shows, but now she's letting me play a lot more MMJ in the car.  I am nearing obsession with this band now and looking to get plugged in with a community that has answers to my noobie questions and where I can read and glean info.

I started the show about 15 rows back, but the sound was distorted so I spent my time next to the soundboard which had great sight and sound lines. I was pretty impressed with the crowd, only about 1/3 of which seemed familiar with MMJ. My bubble of 50 people were either getting down or watching the stage intently. I happened to speak with a few people who were there for ZBB and they LOVED IT. I thought it was a perfect show for this kind of setting. Just balls to the wall rock and roll. I'm sure they gained a lot of new fans from this outing so kudos to them for getting everyone together for it. It probably helped that Lou was in the Final Four. Once you got to the soundboard and beyond, the sound quality was great too. And it was PLENTY loud. My ears were ringing for a good 30 hours.

Anyway, I've always liked Off the Record. It's a nice enough song. But compared to one of my faves -  Highly Suspicious, it feels a little too light and airy for my tastes. But I came away from this show in total love with it and it was the impetus for me to try to find a recording of this show. (Reading thru this entire thread, I'm thrilled to read that the band either has an open taping policy or there are stealth tapers!!). Anyway, one of my first questions to this group is how much do they vary individual songs? I've heard lots of other versions of OTR (including the Red Rocks shows from 2012) and they didn't have nearly as much of an intro jam and certainly not that dark angsty jam that followed. I simply can't wait to hear that song again.

This is long. I'm just pretty amped about this band right now - even nearly a week later.

Anyway, I recently drove across this beautiful country of ours and documented the trip and set it to mostly MMJ songs. If anyone wants to take a peek at pictures from Utah (Bryce and Zion) - check it out:

Utah (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TK_uUp-HxkA#ws)

So hello friends. I might be hanging out for a bit.

First place you should go is the music section of the main mmj site. They sell sbd recordings. The Port Chester shows are a must. Then go to archive.org and have at it. Welcome to the forum, Colfax! I was up front and didn't hear any of the distortion that you were talking about, but I guess I was hearing the stage monitors.

Hey welcome Colfax!  More HQ recordings other than Red Rocks from last year, I'd check out the Port Chester shows that are available for d/l from the main page as well.  Those are a great starting point to exploring the entire live catalog.

As for the OTR, I didn't really catch too much variation on the outro than usual but maybe I was distracted by all the finger touching.  The extended intro is definitely rarer but they bust it out from time to time such as Merriweather from two years back and I think they did a little at PC as well.

You can probably buy one at an Asian market. I've seen them quite often.

Colfax, it's probably a Buddhist thing or has to do with the band's bear imagery. We just accept that Jim likes to hold his golden bear up at us at the end of the show as a way of spreading goodwill and thanks. Pooch and Denise are the band's bear mascots. They are always on stage sometimes dressed in different regional garb. For instance, Pooch had on a Bear Bryant hat when they played Tuscaloosa.
