Title: Spanish Gold
Post by: Crayton09 on Aug 21, 2013, 10:43 AM
Just saw a post on Adrian Quesada's Facebook:
A little over a year ago, old Laredo homie Dante Schwebel (ex-Hacienda, City and Colour) and I cut some demos at my studio for some songs he was writing. Fast forward to fall 2012 and Dante, myself and Patrick Hallahan (My Morning Jacket) bring the songs to life at Easy Eye Studios in Nashville. Three cities and four studios later (Lalaland Louisville, Public Hi Fi and Big Orange in Austin), we have a full length record and a killer band. Introducing SPANISH BOMBS.....stay tuned....
http://spanishbombsmusic.tumblr.com/ (http://spanishbombsmusic.tumblr.com/)

I'm so fuckin' pumped for this! I've been meaning to post threads about Adrian's other bands: Brownout, Ocote Soul Sounds(Martin Perna from Antibalas is also in Ocote), Grupo Fantasma(just left the band) and Money Chicha, but just never got around to it.
Brownout and Ocote are two of my favorite bands and by far my favorite Austin bands. This just made my fucking day! Check out all these bands, they're amazing and Adrian is a super nice dude.

Guess they had second thoughts about the name, eh?

Doesn't dampen my excitement one bit, I just KNOW this is gonna be good. Don't know much about this Adrian fella but Dante and Pat may very well be the musical leaders of the 'niceness-to-talent' ratio rankings, so I couldn't be happier to finally see what these guys can do in a live setting. Someone's gotta go to this Nashville show and give a full report! Fully, looking at you.

Oh wow... I don't know anything about the production of this track, but I would have to assume that Dante has learned well from his mentor Mr. Dan Auerbach.  The sound is right in line with the recent Auerbach-produced Hacienda and Dr. John albums.

I like!
And I gotta give a thumbs up to the percussion too!!

I went to show, and I have to tell you that I cannot wait for this album to come out. I really didn't know what to expect. I went by myself to the show and wondered if it would be worth my time since I haven't heard anything but the song they posted on their tumblr. Well, I was very pleasantly surprised. They were badass. There's a seventies vibe in their sound, guitar-driven. Dante Schwebe from Hacienda provides vocals and guitar. I liked his voice. If you get a chance to go see them, please do. I'll say that sometimes I think that I like everything the My Morning Jacket's members do because I love this band, but I know that in this instance I loved the music for it's own sake. They had a guy playing bass that unfortunately I didn't get his name, and backup singers. One of them was Shelly Colvin, who can be seen around Nashville often. She's quite good in her own right. I ended up meeting up with Yakeroo who I've met at several shows before. It was quite nice to share this show with a fellow forum member. I only recorded two songs. I have no idea what their names are - perhaps CC can get the inside info on that for us. Sorry in advance for the crappy camera work and the sound isn't great, but it isn't terrible either. Seriously, if you get the chance to see them, go.

Those videos are awesome Fully, thank you! These guys better tour.

On Dante: You knew he had it in him to step outta the half-and-half thing with Hacienda and become a full-time front man. Glad to see he's actually doin' it!

On Adrian: He is ripping some pretty sweet licks by the sounds of it. I'd love to see his technique in person.

On Pat: Is this guy ever NOT having fun? Imagine having the luxury to call Pat a friend and jam with him. Dante and Adrian are lucky guys.

Judging by tweets a few weeks ago, I believe the bassist is Timothy Deaux, who plays in the Whigs.

Really excited/interested to see if this is just a here-and-there type deal or if there's an album and/or mini-tour in the works.

There must be an album. They talked about recording most of it in Nashville and then some in Louisville and Austin. I can't stress enough how ballsy the music sounded. It flat out rocked.

"Spanish Gold consists of My Morning Jacket drummer Patrick Hallahan, ex-Grupo Fantasma guitarist Adrian Quesada and guitarist/vocalist Dante Schwebel of Hacienda. The trio's debut, South of Nowhere is out May 27th via BMG/Del Mar Records; the group self-produced the release with the help of Collin Dupuis (Jeff the Brotherhood, Bombino)"

Man, this new tune grooves in all the right ways. Dante is the man. Patrick is the man. Adrian, I admittedly don't know all that much about, but I really enjoyed the Grupo Fanstasmo show I saw in 2008, so you know what, he's the man too. Really hope there are some shows lined up for the early summer. Would love to funk the night away with some of my favorite musicians!

I finally got a chance to listen to their single a few times, and it is awesome.  I'm really looking forward to their album and seeing them play.

When the lyrics kick in at the beginning of the song, it sounds similar to an old song (I think by Rockwell).... "I always feel like, somebody's watching me.  And I get no privacy."

Digging the single more and more with each listen, but I really like those live songs Fully recorded especially the second one (those 2 remain the only material SG has on youtube at the moment!)

Excited for this release, wish it wasnt - seemingly - so far away. Has the sounds of a great summer album. Definitely hoping for a tour as well.

Yac doesn't recognize the Spanish Gold drummer (see above)...... he's the guy that toured with Auerbach of the Black Keys a few years ago.

In all seriousness though, thanks for the vids Penny.  They and the pics are great.   I have listened to Out on the Street countless times on Spotify.  I love that song!   Rolling Stone said that it sounds like Rockwell (maybe they read my earlier post as it came out well before their blurb).  It sounds like Spanish Gold are doing a lot of work in Austin.  Hopefully they'll tour when the album is out.  Any word on that?

I was half asleep so I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure the guy on the radio this morning said Spanish Gold will be in my neck of the woods (upstate ny) in early June. Have to assume this is part of a larger tour. Also, if Pat is the full touring drummer, have to assume this means no MMJ for the early part of summer.

The Waterfront Wednesday show didn't go as planned. After only 3 songs, they stopped the show due to a storm heading our way. (Yes, a thunder storm did hit about 20 to 30 minutes after the plug was pulled.) I sure would have liked to have seen more.

Here is the end of their first song, One Track Mind.

Here is South Of Nowhere (full song, but it isn't the best sounding - too loud for my little camera, and I tried to pan around a couple of times to catch the darkening sky from the approaching thunder storm and to capture the size of the crowd).

Man does that suck Mr. White! I am seriously pondering the Troubadour right now, and will check to see whats left. I really like the album a ton, the music reminds me of what Jim's next spinoff direction could have been. Vocals are the weak point as has been pointed out. I stumbled into a second copy of the single. It was the local record store, with all the 45's that did not sell on RSD in one pile Spanish Gold was on top. I will sell it to anyone who needs it for cost plus shipping. PM me if interested.

I didn't see CountSA but I went to the show.   My take was that it was good, not great.  A treat to see Patrick on a tiny stage banging away.   60 people in attendance.   I really like the album and they played the songs faithfully.   A good time but nothing especially mindblowing or memorable.

I stopped by Matt Anthony's Record Shop on Frankfort Ave. in Louisville yesterday to pick up my copy of South Of Nowhere he had ordered for me, and it is starting to grow on me. Too bad they only got to play 3 songs the other day at Waterfront Wednesday.

Only 60 people.  I hope there is a better turnout in DC tomorrow night.  My expectations are a bit lower now, so I think they will be exceeded.

I really enjoyed the show.  They played the entire album and played it really well.  The Hamilton is a great, little venue with excellent sound.  You could get as close to the stage as you want with plenty of elbow room or sit at a table farther away.  I'd say there were about 200 people in all.  The band looked like they were having a lot of fun, and all of the members spoke to the crowd and got a little banter going.

Don't miss SG if they're coming near you.  And brush up on your Bell Biv Devoe so you can sing along during the encore..... "That girl is poison."

It's always great to see a show with Mr. Whippy, Mr. Flake, Mr. Manonthemoon, and Mrs. Manonthemoon.  Definitely a fun Sunday night.

The band hung out after the show and were more than happy to sign album covers or posters (very nice looking poster I should say courtesy of Mr. Status Serigraph).  Patrick and Dante were both super friendly to everyone.

I caught this short piece on Spanish Gold on NPR on my way home today at 4:55 p.m. Here is the headline and the link to the audio of the story.

"From A Band On The Border, The Stories That Shape 'South Of Nowhere'"

http://www.npr.org/2014/06/02/318266822/from-a-band-on-the-border-the-stories-that-shape-south-of-nowhere?ft=1&f=1039 (http://www.npr.org/2014/06/02/318266822/from-a-band-on-the-border-the-stories-that-shape-south-of-nowhere?ft=1&f=1039)

"Spanish Gold is a band out of South Texas, and the band's debut album, South of Nowhere, draws inspiration from life on the U.S.-Mexico border. Singer Dante Schwebel discusses the band's sound and the meanings behind the lyrics."

Man they just played a great show at Mercury Lounge. Tiny little club, probably only holds about 250 and wasn't quite packed, but they still brought it. Everyone sounded great, Dante singled out Patrick for a couple awesome drum solos, and generally it was just a real high energy show. I'm not even a big fan of the record, but I wouldn't miss them if they come around. Also, they killed it with a Bel Biv Devoe "Poison" cover to end the show. They actually said to the crowd that they would be hanging out drinking beers afterward and encouraged everyone to stay and hang, but I had to catch a train. Pretty upset I couldn't drink a beer or two with Patrick...

Ps- they have 2 backup singers who are smoking hot and one does play a bit of omnichord throughout the show.

Right on Murph - same thoughts after seeing them in Saratoga on Monday night - great show with high energy, the back up chicks were a nice surprise, spoke at length with Dante and Patrick after the show (Patrick will be hanging at Bonnaroo with City & Colour guys) - poster is sweet -

Patrick's wild drumming at the end gave it that extra something that got the audience into it and even Letterman, to a degree.

As Letterman was telling the band thanks, I noticed he pointed directly at Patrick and said, "Nice to see ya", like he remembered him from the times MMJ played The Ed Sullivan Theater in the past.

Nice set tonight on the Baltimore waterfront.  Ms GO4IT and I were on the rail. They had some issues getting the sound right which delayed their start and probably cut off a song or two given time limitations.  I didn't time it but it was probably about a 40 min set, ending with a rockin' Out on the Street.

After devouring some raw Bay oysters after the set we made our way back to the merch tent and were lucky to find Patrick, Adrian and the backup singers.  We talked to Patrick for a while.  He said his brother had married a Baltimore girl and for about 10 years he was coming up here a lot.  Of course I failed to ask the critical questions concerning when the album would drop and when they would go on tour.  I bought the new album in vinyl and they signed it which was great.  Then I chatted with the backup singers for a while (hey, they were looking a little lonely on the other side of the tent ). They were still all excited about the Letterman show experience.

I'll post a video or two shortly.

Glad you had a great time GO4IT. I'm gonna see them in mid-July in a really intimate venue and am really stoked. They remind me of the Black Keys sort of. This venue is small, so I have 95% confidence I'll be able to talk with the band. I was able to chat with the lead singer of TV On The Radio when his solo project stopped by, so I feel like I could talk to Pat. Serious question tho, it's not crossing the line by asking him about the upcoming tour/album/etc?

I don't think I'd feel comfy asking anyone about their 'other band' while on tour with the side project band, but maybe that's just me.

Reminds me a bit of when I saw Chris robinsons brotherhood a couple years back, some drunk asshole up near the stage kept screaming "she talks to angels" loud as shit between songs. Chris got pissed and eventually snapped on the dude and started saying "wrong band bro...wrong band."

Nothing to be ashamed about. If everyone here had to love Wilco, Dylan, The Dead, A Shakes, NY, then this place would be a Nazi Zombie convention. I personally kinda like the SG album. I hear so many off the wall influences. There were a few clunkers, but that's expected.

Honestly, I have listened to it 2.5 times on Rhapsody and have not read the titles. I just know the weaker ones are towards the end, maybe just 2. I'll have to get back on specifics after more listens.

The reason I didn't ask Patrick about the MMJ album and tour is that I thought it would be somewhat dickish to take them out of the moment with the new album, Letterman, the tour, etc. and by not focusing my comments on Spanish Gold.  And Adrian was right next to Patrick so it was not like I was having a private conversation.  It was obvious enough about my obsession with MMJ when shaking Patrick's hand.  In another setting I may have popped the questions but not in this moment.

I agree, walterfredo, that behavior is obnoxious. But I also don't think it is quite the same as asking someone about their "other band" respectfully after they've played their set. After all, many of us have taken notice of Spanish Gold and are going out to support Patrick because of our devotion to MMJ.  I don't think that's something to hide or feel uncomfortable about.  As GO4IT said the timing didn't feel right and he made a judgment call and I think that that is important.  I believe as long as you don't walk up to him with an objective and you're respectful and the timing seems appropriate that it is acceptable to say whatever is on your mind.  Patrick seems like a pretty approachable normal dude.

I wasn't trying to compare the two things really, just that I was reminded about the CRB incident while thinking about this, definitely not on the same level at all.  And I agree that Patrick is approachable and nice as hell.  Chatted with him briefly after Carl's solo gig at Joe's pub...couldn't have been nicer.  I was just commenting that I wouldn't feel comfortable asking MMJ questions at a Spanish Gold gig.  Nothing wrong with it, I just personally would not.

Saw Spanish Gold last night and Patrick couldn't have been nicer. I spent most of the show screaming "COBRA!", and when security asked me to stop, I totally understood. So I spent the second half of the show screaming "PHONE!" I don't think they heard me cuz they didn't play it, so I drank about 8 shots of woodford reserve to lubricate my throat, and then spent the rest of the show screaming, "RUN THRU". I even tried "Strangulation", but security came over after Patrick threw a drumstick at my face. I assume for being such a good fan. And I think security wanted to make sure I was ok cuz I was bleeding pretty bad. Then I waited in the bar for my"New" best bud Patrick to come out for a dozen or so selfies, and more shots. I could tell we really hittin it off cuz I talked really loud in his face about how much more I like MMJ than any of the MMJ band members solo projects. After the bar closed I waited out front and followed him to the van and talked to him about MMJ and constantly told him that the T5 vinyl set should be released, yelling about how MMJ should release their new album now, cuz I REALLY wanna here it, and complaining about how they haven't released OBH info, and telling him stories about what MMJ songs I like and and how they should let me curate their setlists, and telling him where I WANTED OBH2 to be! I could tell it was going great when he hopped in the van locked the door and drove away without even loading out. Good night for a great fan! I encourage everyone to do the same. Remember to tell him about what YOU want AND where YOU think shows should be AND what bugs you about certain behavior at concerts and where you want OBH2 to be (you know cuz of riff raff, and how YOU can afford it) and, when YOU think they should release THEIR album. From what I could tell all the members of the band, not JUST Patrick, LOVE that stuff. I mean it's not like they spent an entire year long tour letting fans request songs or anything. And it's not like they set up a forum where ppl could actually discuss stuff about you're favorite band, AND THEIR MUSIC, and how they treat their loyal fans with a fan club that gives you presales and Tshirts and vinyl and posters. I mean it's not like they genuinely care about their fans, and just about bend over backwards to make their fans happy, and seem to go out and treat EVERY show like a special event, and try and KILL IT every time they walk on stage...? So keep it up. The constant, I want THIS and I want THAT has got feel great!!

P.S. Spanish Gold closed with "Poison" - Bel Biv Devoe  -on (6/10/14) Chicago.

P.P.S. I couldn't find the whining, unappreciative fan thread so....

P.P.P.S. For those of you who don't get the joke...look up sarcasm. And for everybody whose gets it, cool. And for the undecided, I regret nothing. I know this forum has a lot of positive, Good Hearted people who are on here because it fuckin hurts, and you ache because you love this band so much, and you just got chills and an itch that cant be scratched. But for the other people, its seems like there has gotten to be so many of these pockets of greediness and just downright dickheaded behavior that I couldn't hold it in anymore.

In all honesty ask Patrick whatever you want. Like you would ask another human being a question. If it feels awkward or your uncomfortable, then its probably awkward and uncomfortable. I met him and it was a down to earth conversation that happened organically as he just happened to be standing behind me while i was talking to some other Chitown fans I know.

Again, Just one guys opinion.

We talked about how great the posters are and how we love Status Serigraph - also discussed where to get ther best local BBQ (Dinosaur BBQ in upstate NY), then chatted about Bonnaroo and how he'll be there with City & Colour - we let him know about our Groop "It Beats for Roo" and he said he'd try to swing by if he makes his way out to roam....

Very nice guy and very approachable.

And btw - you don't have to be so surly, tippitoes22 - we're all pals here

Here is a glowing review of the Portland show from Jambase. Wish they came somewhere close to me.  http://www.jambase.com/Articles/122145/Review-and-Photos-Spanish-Gold-and-Clear-Plastic-Masks-Portland (http://www.jambase.com/Articles/122145/Review-and-Photos-Spanish-Gold-and-Clear-Plastic-Masks-Portland)

Saw them tonight. They were fuckin great. I recommend going to see them. They have a great energy live, and Dante's voice sounds better than on the album. Plus, they stuck around and were very down to earth.

Epic show last night in Birmingham. The new album is totally jumping off the chain in a live setting. There were extended jams, outros, etc and all members seemed to be having a blast.

I really hope Spanish Gold has staying power and isn't just a one off project.  I did tell one of the backup singers that they should be lobbying for a spot on the OBH bill.

Was able to meet the rest of the band too and they all signed their LP. When Patrick saw the pathetic pen I handed him he told me that wouldn't do and headed backstage. A minute later he had a metallic gold sharpie that he and the band used on the black album jacket. Very cool night indeed.

LB, I probably saw you at some point last night. I was front and center in the second row.

unravelled I was right there when you were asking the backup singer to go to OBH! Epic fun all around ha

I asked Adrian about the song they covered. And here it is, I've been playing it all day. The original is great too!

ACL just had Spanish Gold on channel 2 of their webcast.  I was able to catch most of it, and they sounded really good.  It looks like they will air their set again.  Some sets are available "on demand" on the website.

For the first time in a long time, I listened to this album from start to finish this weekend and was reminded that it's damned good!

solid album - wish their respective bands could line up a down cycle again, but that would mean a year off for MMJ and I cannot condone that ;)
