Title: MMJ - CBGB Music and Film Festival - 10/12/13
Post by: adam_pliskow on Oct 01, 2013, 12:50 AM
What an awesome unexpected announcement.  MMJ in less than 2 weeks.  Bummed no PC, but at least we get a set to hold us over until the spring.  I read the free show on the 12th starts at 10am.  Does anyone have accurate set times? details?

My Morning Jacket
James Murphy DJ Set
Grizzly Bear
Divine Fits
The Wallflowers

I'll be at this. Taking the train down from Albany. Excited.

Would love to get the set times.

Also, we using this thread? We rollcall thread? We merge threads?

MMJ are top billed on every CBGB thing I've seen so I'd imagine they're playing 5:30/6-7ish when the event is supposed to end. 5 stages!

Sorry.  I didn't notice a RC thread.  Anyway, you heard that the event ends at 7?  If that's the case then I'd assume they wouldn't go on till 5-5:30 unless they close the event with the DJ set.

looks like they're splitting up the main acts between a north and south stage.  show ends at 7pm.

3. dmmjb??

As much of a shit show as this inevitably will be... It's a free My Morning Jacket show in my backyard.  I most definitely will be there.

New info has MMJ, Grizzly Bear, and James Murphy playing 4-7pm.

http://www.cbgb.com/times-square.php

Tight schedule for 3 acts. Still nice to have the boys active. Enjoy, those that can go.

James Murphy is definitely one of the least likely and coolest openers MMJ could have. If any of you don't listen to LCD Soundsystem, they are another of the best bands of the last 10-15 years. Can't wait.

Don't forget to keep me posted. I'd definitely like to get together with you guys either before our shows or after.

Our meetup with Steve Hackett is at 2:00, so I think meeting up dinner time/preshow will work on my end if it's good for you guys. If not, definitely a late night post shows drink.

Enjoy the show Saturday, and if I didn't have other plans set for months, I'd be in NYC too.

First time poster here. I'm good friends with the threadstarter adam_pliskow. Like most people's sentiment, I'm very excited to see MMJ for free right in my backyard and expecting a total shitshow in Times Square. But how unique that the band gets to play in on the streets of TS. Should be a very high energy set. I'm guessing 75 minutes give or take 15. Probably head to TS around 2. Check things out and then hit a bar until James Murphy.

Nice to finally speak up on here. Cheers.

I'll see you the very next day though, brooke!

Don't forget to keep me posted. I'd definitely like to get together with you guys either before our shows or after.

Our meetup with Steve Hackett is at 2:00, so I think meeting up dinner time/preshow will work on my end if it's good for you guys. If not, definitely a late night post shows drink.

You bet, Eric! I'll give you a shout when I get to Philly.

If I didn't get a message from a co-worker offering me free NIN tickets I'd be there with you guys. I'd have to leave before 5 so I'd likely miss any Jacket set anyways. I hope you guys get a great free set and awesome weather! I miss you guys this year-it hasn't been quite right and thankfully it's almost over.

I just talked to one of the crew and he told me MMJ comes on at 5:45. South stage at 46th & Broadway. The scene is not THAT bad right now, relatively speaking. Way more tourists than concertgoers at the moment. That said, the standing area around the stage is fairly small so you'll want to get out here early to make sure you can see.

Free Jacket show = pretty nice little Saturday!

Thanks for the heads-up on Wilco being live streamed on ACL (YouTube). I didn't even know it was on! I got to the live stream a little late, but you can rewind the video to catch the whole show (as long as it is still playing). I just got it started a few minutes ago. Here is the YouTube channel it is playing on.

Great weather, an amazing backdrop and a thin crowd in front of the stage.  What else does one need to provide the foundation of a great MMJ festival set.  Seriously, I couldn't believe how thin the crowd was for TS.  They put a nice cozy stage next to this huge building on 46 street which redirected the sound on to the floor.  It was loud and they played a set list for the crowd - ending with an energetic OBH.  The Brittney song was good, but I wasn't that in to it.  Don't Do It with Dylan's son was a bit sloppy at times, but they did a killer finishing guitar jam at the end.
It was only 60 minutes, but what a great October surprise.  Overall, I would put this in the category of you 'should have been there if you lived in the tri-state area' type show.  Easily missed, but surreal.  I suppose having a festival in times square can provide both types of experiences.  4/5 imo

2 things.  How awkward and just not into it does Jakob Dylan seem?  Is that just his style?  So strange to me when Jim goes up to him during the breakdown/jam and he just stands there.  And secondly, did both him and Jim play the same note the whole song?

Either way, looked fun.  Nice treat for you City folks.  : )

TerRific photos Jeremy  (as per usual).

A truly fun night and it was SO much better than I expected.  Good small crowd of some forum faithful on the Jim-side rail thanks to Adam Shanker.

Very nice to see the travelling and always happy Joey Rogo post show and anytime I am surrounded by Trish, Brooke, Val and Danz, it's a good time.
Also great to see yet amother show with Mr Budsock, Rich and Dylan.   Just another mini-family reunion a block away from my office.

Not the greates MMJ show but certainly the Greatest free and mostly spntaneous MMJ show ever so no complaints from me.

Me and Mrs. HH had a fabulous night.

I thought the show was great.  Cool for what it was. Sound was very good near the risers.

I was disappointed when I saw they ended at 645 but curfew was 7.

Thought the band would be like "o, 15 minutes left?  Magheta, Gideon"

Who knows, maybe they wrote out the setlist and only rehearsed those songs.

Please Play 3 nights at the beacon now.

Wow! What a total delight this day was!  First of all, the weather was absolutely spectacular -- could not have been better.  We made it into the city in record time, parked in Port Authority, and made our way over to the stage by about 3 or so.  As we had three children with us, we had to do some strategic planning.  Here's how it went:  I stayed in the pit while Bob traipsed around Times Square with the kids.  This worked out really well (for me...chuckle chuckle).

Around 3:45 some of my favorite people showed up, we got into position, and were ready to go.  We enjoyed James Murphy, which got us moving a bit, and also helped to drown out some of the obscenities that had been being hurled at the road crew by the 4 frat boys, and mysterious lady in a suit who showed up and began joining in.  Note: If you are the dude who was yelling "Jaime" all afternoon, next time, leave the booze behind.  Seriously, though...even his friends were getting pissed.

Moving on.....James Murphy finished his set, and the anticipation began to mount! I almost couldn't believe that we had accomplished this seemingly insane feat of bringing 3 children into Times Square to see MMJ.  It worked out really well, and Bob was able to hang out on the side of the stage with the kids (who were also in the pit for a few songs).  Chrissy got at least 1, possibly 3 waves from Jim, so this was a treat.

What can I say about the set?  It was short indeed, but such an utter joy to behold.  Our boys in the middle of the truly "sensory overload" that is Times Square, surrounded by some wonderful friends.  I can't say enough how much I enjoyed the Fela tune, which I now know to be titled "Trouble Sleep Yanga Wake Am" or something like that.  Merrill Garbus is a powerhouse for such a tiny little thing! Of course, Brittney Howard was brilliant as always, and Antibalas really rounded out the set.  I cannot get that song out of my head!  I also thought Victory Dance was a ton of fun! And of course, Don't Do it....

There seemed to be a lot of sound issues going on, and it's always fun to watch Carl animatedly direct the engineers/techs on how to get it more perfect.  I saw Bo doing a bit of that as well, and even Tommy.  For me, the only time I noticed a real sound problem was during Don't Do It, but I didn't care!!!!!  I had an absolute ball, and it was just such a completely unexpected surprise!

Not sure when we will be seeing the band next, so I'm truly grateful that we got this little snippet to hold us over for what may be a long, cold winter.....

calling us frat boys just because we were wearing jet and giants hats? thats a load of shit we are far from frat boys why dont you get to know us first before labeling us. none of my friends were cursing at the road crew it was that nut job lady, yea my drunk friend kept shouting jaime cause he was excited to see jim and the rest of mmj yea it was a little excessive cause he was drunk but he was like a kid on christmas getting up that close to mmj in times square. we are die hard fans and wouldnt of gotten there that early and that close if we werent besides my drunk friend shouting jaime we did absolutley nothing wrong and the frat label is just absurd

I could think of other labels......and I'm not really sure of the relationship between professional football and frat boys, but I digress.  Anyway, name calling is never nice, so for that I apologize (I didn't think you guys actually read this stuff).

My sincerest apologies to those of you in the group who were cool, and I agree the lady took the obscenities to a whole new level.  I also noticed one of you guys trying to chill Jaime out, and appreciated that.  Listen, we've all been drunk at shows, I totally get that....it was just a bit over the top in between sets.

I, too, felt like a kid at Christmas being right there up front in Times Square.....however, I didn't use that excuse to blow smoke, literally, into people's faces and yell obscenities to no one in particular. It just took a little bit away from the otherwise very chill scene, just for those of us who were in the proximity.

Lots of people who've been on the forum for sometime, are pretty chill. We've made new friends, enjoyed reuniting with old friends and would do just about anything for each other.  Occasionally someone will exhibit bad behavior, and we can forgive that.  But when the offender starts replying with such vehement defense of such said behavior, we take notice.  Or rather, I should say I do, not fair to speak for the rest of my MMJ family.  And I for one, know that the band, especially Jim, doesn't tolerate bad behavior that affects others.  I have seen him STOP the show to make sure that ALL the fans are safe and "chill".   Another reason why we love this band!

i get the whole chill thing but my group of friends were being chill. we only had a few beers before we had more of a natural high from being that close. your also front row at an outdoor concert you have to expect these kinds of things you cant have everything your way people are gonna be rowdy and want to have a smoke i know none of my friends would blow smoke in someones face on purpose though thats not right. im not trying to be rude or anything im just telling it how it is

Welcome Hendo but please don't go slamming TDB for comments about fratboys.

She happens to be one of the kindest and sweetest members of this wonderful community.  Everyone is entitled to their opinions even if you disagree with hers.

Might be best to earn some respect first before accusing others on this board of lacking some.

Glad you and your friends had such a good time.  I agree that seeing the boys in TS was pretty special.  All MMJ shows are special but this one was certainly unique.
