Greetings! Many of my friends and family have reached out recently, as I was scheduled to have major open-heart surgery tomorrow, Sept. 16. Just to keep you informed, the surgery has been postponed, per the surgeon. No new date has been set. It could be days, weeks, or months. We are very unhappy with this sudden change in plans and unclear as to the reason for the delay, despite some assurances from the surgeon's office. Its a long story, but suffice it to say a lot of wonderful people who are rearranging their lives to provide support to me and my family during the post-op recovery period are being greatly inconvenienced by this and I am sorry. I will let you know when surgery is rescheduled and appreciate all the positive vibes sent my way.
For those unaware, we have been monitoring an aortic aneurysm for the past few years and it is finally large enough to warrant surgery to replace the root portion of the ascending aorta. I will also have my aortic valve replaced with a mechanical valve, as it is defective (bicuspid, though working fairly well). This 6-8 hour surgery will have me in ICU for a day or two, then another 3-6 days in recovery before heading home. It will be another 3-6 weeks before I'll be able to return to "normal" daily life (work, driving, etc.).
Stay tuned...
Best of luck with rescheduling the operation. I hope the hospital can rework the operation to fall on a day soon enough, so you will be more than recovered and ready to enjoy OBH. I hope everything goes well for you and your family, and I wish you great health and a speedy recovery!
Hang in there, John. Good luck!
Thanks for the update John, I was thinking over the weekend of your upcoming surgery. I hope the delay is short, and the angst it's causing you, and those wonderful people helping you out, is only temporary.
Be sure to keep us informed, and know I'm keeping you,and your family in my thoughts.
The silver lining could be that you're now able to catch Pearl Jam in Moline.
But in all seriousness, good luck and I'm sure your inconvenienced family just wants what is best in regards to the timing of your surgery...... as long as it doesn't conflict with OBH. Positive vibes headed your way for a smooth recovery.
Thanks, guys. A bit more detail has come to light. The surgeon had eye surgery recently and received new loupes (magnifiers). He doesn't want my surgery to be the first time he uses them, so it looks like we're going with Tues., Sept. 23rd now, a week from tomorrow. Hopefully, he can see what he's doing...

Great to see you have kept your great sense of humor through this. No doubt he's using some great common sense here, and good to know you got some answers. Hopefully that'll put you at ease a little bit, because for me it's always better knowing why than wondering why.
Good luck next week, and check in when you can.

As Ms GO4IT and I related a couple of days ago, that surgeon better have a REALLY good reason for postponing so good to know he did and that the reschedule is not far off. Yeah, you definitely want your surgeons eyes to be working well so it's good to know he'll have a chance to get them adjusted before he works on you .
Best of luck next week. We'll be thinking of you and waiting to hear the good news that you're all patched up and ready to hit the concert trail in 2015!
Good luck John. I hope everything goes well and you are back to rockin' out on the front row of shows in the coming months. Just think to yourself, "Mexico awaits!"
Will be thinking of you on Tuesday. As we say in Oz, she'll be right. (It means everything's going to be okay)
I will be thinking about you as well. I hope the surgery goes smoothly and you have a speedy recovery!

Surgery Update
Postponed again, at least 2 weeks. Came down with a head cold on Thursday. Doctors don't want to risk complications, even though I'm mostly over it.
<insert long string of angry profanity here>
Mom and stepdad driving back to NH until further notice. Thanks for the well-wishes. I'll bank 'em for whenever this gets done.
Sigh.
BOL, my friend. While having to give pause may be difficult, this is very much a situation where you "measure twice and cut once".
just seeing this thread. Hoping all goes well Johnny!
Will stand by for any updates
Heading out in about an hour for pre-op tests and xrays. If all goes well, the surgery is tomorrow. Thanks for all the well wishes and positive vibes!

Hope to hear some more news soon!

UPDATE:
John's wife Michele said that John is still in the ICU but doing better.
The surgery did not go as smoothly or quickly as hoped and it sounds like there were some complications. John's condition has stabilized in the past day but he is still hooked up to a heart/lung machine.
Sounds like the current plan is to get him off of that thing at some point this coming Tuesday.
We all know Yac has a big heart made of gold so hopefully he will be getting stronger by the day.
Continue to post your well wishes here as I'm confident that one Yac will be getting back to the forum as soon as he possibly can. We all know he is the one guy who never stays away for long.

Thanks for the update. I've been a little concerned with the lack of info, definitely been on my mind over the last few days. Scary stuff. Definitely a heart of gold though. Be well Yac!
Yes, thanks again for the update, headhunter.
Have been thinking of the Yacs. Godspeed!
you got this JY!

Hey gang- some good and up-to-date news from John's wife Michele.
Please let everyone know for us that we got some super good news this morning. John is off all the machines and breathing on his own, and his heart is beating on its own, too. He is still retaining too much fluid for them to be able to close him up, but hopefully that will happen in the next few days.
I'm very relieved that recent news is quite positive. Hang in there YYac. You'll be better in no time.
Same here Adam. Great to hear some good news.
Hang tough John, and continuing to send tons of good thoughts your way.
:: thanks for the update Jeff::

Nice positive update from John's wife Michele last night:
Were very excited! He is doing very well- he breathing unassisted some of the time, though still intubated. His heart is doing well-in fact they never mention it as a concern anymore...it is all about the lungs. So big happy news, but tomorrow will be the exciting day. I can't thank you enough for all your support!

Great news from Michele this morning!
the surgery was successful- John's chest is closed and he is doing well. We haven't seen him yet, but the doctor had nothing but positive things to say. Thanks to all for your concern and good wishes! I can't wait until he can see your messages and FB posts! Michele
Here's to you John and I hope you keep getting better every day!
GET BETTER JYAC.
Remember to do your breathing exercises! Wish you well
Go Johnny Go! Great news. Prayers and good vibes to you and the family. Miss you around here.
I communicated very briefly with John earlier this month about his upcoming surgery with no real details. I'm kind of getting chills reading these updates, as it appears to be a very significant procedure. Strange having emotional thoughts about someone I have never met in person. I hope he is in 100% health for OBH. He should be honorary host. Seriously.

Here's hoping you're feeling better my friend, and get well soon!
A tough second night out of ICU. Started having trouble breathing, progressively worse towards midnight. Seems my lungs were filling with fluid. I couldn't catch my breath and my breathing rate was exhausting me. They moved me back to ICU. My saving grace was an oxygen mask delivering oxygen under pressure. So, the didn't have to intubate me. Doing much better now, only using a cannula, and waiting for lunch (soup and grilled cheese with pudding and Gatorade- nectar of the gods!). Hope to be out of ICU (again) by tomorrow. Love to you all!!!
hang in there YY!

Johnny, it's great to see you here posting again. Thinking about you buddy. You got this.
Thanks, everyone. Just left cardiac ICU for the second time. Had to go back due to pulmonary edema (lungs filled with fluid, couldn't breathe). Hoping to leave hospital by week's end, then 1-2 weeks inpatient rehab in Cedar Rapids, then...HOME!!!
Also getting optimistic feedback from docs and therapists that I can still make OBH! Won't be drinking (maybe a little) and might miss a few songs tending to a my ostemy bag (ugh), but Michele and I deserve this vacation and hanging with my MMJ brothers and sisters will provide another source of healing.

from your lips to the ears of the one upstairs. as long as you are healthy. JY at OBH would be icing on the cake.
We're all so glad to be getting some posts from you John. Keep strong, and don't forget you are loved!
Also, don't forget to turn some nurses and doctors on to MMJ. I'm sure you have had somebody smuggle in some sort of music player for you.
Your Friend,
John
It's really nice and quite a relief to read that good news. Hopefully no more complications and you'll be home in about two weeks and then Mexico in about two months. You deserve the vacation. It will be amazing regardless if everyone there buys you drinks or you're not drinking at all.

I already paid for everyones drinks, and I'm not even going. You will be responsible for tips, though.
Seriously, I'm thrilled John is progressing. He did some real cool stuff for me a few years back, and I really wanted to meet him in Mexico. Fundage issues prevented that.
Thanks, guys. Warms my heart to have you fight over who will buy me free drinks.
Endoscopy this morning, in search of bleeding that set me back yesterday. Hoping they find and fix the source so I can get back on track with my recovery.
My latest look. The blue "headband" holds a dressing on a large pressure wound on the back of my head.

My first time on in a long while and my first priority is to check on JYac. To my amazement John is logged on and with hopeful new posts! You look very determined, John, like you're definitely going to be on the rail next year with the rest of us when MMJ finally hits the road. Can't wait. Get better soon!
Glad to hear you'll be on the move real soon! One step closer to home!
Wow, I hadn't seen this...thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery!
Left UI hospital today, after 6 weeks, 2 surgeries, 200+ units of blood, and your positive vibes to sustain me. Some of the ICU nurses called me "miracle man". The truth is that the miracle was the skilled care of my nurses and most of my doctors.
I am now at St. Luke's inpatient rehab facility in Cedar Rapids for 1-2 weeks. My broad goal is to get stronger and more able to take care of myself. My other goal is to prove to my wife and doctors that I am good to go for OBH. I'm kinda thinking I desesrve it, now more than ever...
Thanks again for your support during a scary and stressful ordeal. Part of what makes MMJ the best band is that they attract fans who are good, caring people. Love to you all!
John
John, if you don't go to OBH2, just who am I going to live it vicariously through? (Actually probably no one, as WhyTF would anyone be posting crap on the internet when reality is in your face?)

Hey John, glad to hear you are finally out of the hospital and are now on the road to getting back home! Positive vibes still heading your way for you to get well enough to take a much deserved vaca in Mexico.
I will go home on Wednesday, Dec. 3rd! It will have been exactly 50 days from when I left home for surgery on Oct. 14.
On this Thanksgiving eve, I reflect on those for whom I am most grateful. For my wife, Michele, my three girls, my Mom, stepdad Ken, brother Bill, mother-in-law Marian and father-in-law Rich for supporting each other on the home front. For the nurses, doctors, therapists, and other staff at UI Hospital and St. Luke's Hospital rehab facility for their compassionate care. For the 200+ people who donated the blood that saved me over and over again. For my sister Deb and her family. For all of my family and friends, whose positive thoughts and words of encouragement gave me hope when I needed it most.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
John
Great news John!! so happy you're doing well, and will be going home in a week.
I hope you, Michelle, the girls, and the rest of your family have a great Thanksgiving.
Here's to seeing you sometime in 15. The 1st one is on me. Hell, the 2nd and 3rd ones too!
I'm so glad to see you posting and to hear the positive news! The positive vibes im the MMJ community definitely shined upon your care in the hospital. I've been think about you and am so happy to hear there is positive progress. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Just seein' all this now -- great to hear you're back at home and on the road to recovery. All the best through the holiday season and heading into 2015!!
Great news! Thank you for the updates
I've been home for almost two weeks, but my Tapatalk app on my S4 is acting crazy and I just made it downstairs to my office tonight for the first time since Oct. 13, so sorry for the delayed reply.
I ended up back in the hospital on Thursday to Saturday, with suspected pneumonia (definitely fluid in my lungs, making it hard to breathe). I'm home again and working hard to get strong. Drove for the first time today, to the DMV to get 6-month handicap parking tags. I hate to admit it, but I'm gonna need them for at least a few months.
Still holding out hope for OBH. So far, I have the support of all of my doctors. Be warned... I will not be drinking more than one or two alcoholic beverages per day, thanks to my warfarin (an anticoagulation medication to reduce stroke risk from my mechanical aortic valve). I won't need the booze to have a good time!
One last thing to share. I came home from the hospital to a mountain of mail and packages. One came from Red Light Management. I believe these images tell the rest of the story...

I was getting kind of worried after not having any updates from you, John. I'm so glad you are back in action and back home (again)! Also, your "care package" from those dudes based in Kentucky sure looks special. Thanks for sharing with us.

Glad you got over the pneumonia, John. Keep getting stronger.
That right there is another reason why this band is so awesome and special. Keep getting better and stronger!
Hang in there John and thanks for sharing!
Great to see you're home, and doing better. John. sucks about the recent setback but glad to see you kicked the shit out of that too!
Continued good vibes coming your way, and no doubt you'll be enjoying OBH as you planned.
Helluva cool gift box you got there too! Much deserved, and thanks for posting, and sharing.
So sorry to hear that you're going through this ordeal JY, but it is awesome that you are recovering. A lotta people care about you, and it is so awesome that the very band that brought us all together cares about you too! All the best this holiday season. Wishing you a speedy recovery and great health in 2015!
As always, thanks for the kindness, my MMJ family! I just can't find it in me to scour the entire forum right now, but hope to be back in full swing soon. I keep learning about the weeks following my surgery, when I was on a heart/lung machine, and its clear I'm lucky to be alive. I'm not a religious man, but do believe that your support had a hand in my recovery.
Enough about me! Let's retire this thread and get back to speculating on the next My Morning Jacket album and what Jim's wearing these days!

i love you so much, john!
I hate having to revive this thread, but thought the Forum faithful should know that complications from last year's open-heart surgery, with all the drama and brush with death, just got more complicated.
I was having testing to get cleared to have my ileostomy reversed. Instead, it was revealed that the metal stent placed in my left coronary artery last year has fractured and is experiencing an overgrowth of cells, called stenosis. It is about 65% blocked, which also explains why I was starting to get out of breath more easily recently.
Therefore, I'm having coronary bypass surgery on Monday, Oct. 5th.
The surgeon (not the same guy who did last year's procedure) will divert an existing artery, the left interior mammary artery (LIMA) from my ribcage to a place along the left coronary artery after the blockage. This is another open-heart procedure, though barring any complications, I should be home within 1 or 2 weeks.
I'll try to let you know I lived through this one as soon as I am able, but would appreciate some positive vibes from this fine collection of folks. I've arranged for some support keeping up with setlists, poster art, and taping links while I am out of commission, so hopefully that info will still be added in a timely manner.
For those lucky enough to be attending shows during the remainder of 2015, enjoy! I look forward to reports from the road. MMJ will be a big part of my recovery.
Love you all,
John

Thanks, friends! I'll try to send a flare or have someone let you know all went well. Hope to be back soon. In the meantime, check out the setlist from last night's Seattle show!
Well, this is my last visit to the Forum for a while. I've got friends in touch with my wife who can let you know how it went. I'll be back on once I take care of myself, and my family, first. Enjoy the rest of the Fall tour and "see" you all soon.

My little man and I will be praying for you, JY, and I'll make sure that I dedicate some yogi heart meditations directly your way.

Here's hoping to a speedy recovery!!
GREAT NEWS! Hoping for a speedy recovery for you now!
What a whirlwind. A year ago, I was near death. Today, it's 48 hours since I left the OR, 24 hours since I left the cardiac ICU, and I am free of all tubes and IVs, and have walked almost 2000 feet. Oh, and my new best friend is Percocet. Thanks for all the kind thoughts, well wishes, prayers, and positive vibes. Hope to be home within a week.

Ahh yes, the Yac ET photo! If that's the one you mean it was from the Mann in Philly, and pretty sure it was Carl and Yac.
I don't have it but was there to see it in person and was with Janecool when she took it. A classic photo indeed!  I'm sure someone here has it, and John definitely does.

Alright, I'm back and ready to retire this thread... again! Having a hell of a time typing (Percocet, perhaps?). I've updated the setlist and poster threads, with a few gaps.
HUGE props to BH for covering for me for the past week or so. Love ya, Dave!
So, we need a better image and the name of the artist for the Missoula poster.
Also, is there a soundcheck setlist from Vegas night 2?
Nice be be "among the living again!"

Thanks, guys. I'll also share my post from Facebook today.
One year ago today...
I don't think I'd be here without the love and support of AMAZING friends and family. This was the end of day one - 17 hours in surgery, ECMO life support, chest to remain open 10 days, 204 units of blood transfused, 40 days at UI Hospital, 9 days of rehab...
Feel free to comment, but- if you can- PLEASE GIVE BLOOD. My heart beats for you.

So cool johnnYYac. I think that's all anyone needs to know about this band. You deserve it to for all you been thru and all you do for this fan base. Thanks for being you!
Thanks, rkwedge! Mighty nice of you. Its more than the music when you fall in love with My Morning Jacket.
What a great get well card and thoughtful gesture from the band (again). I hope they never have to send you one of these again..... maybe a birthday card in good health would be sufficient next year.
Keep getting better and getting ready for the next tour.
Great to hear that you're on the mend, John.
For those of you who followed my ordeal, you know that I am here today in large part due to the generosity of over 200 strangers who donated blood. I received well over 200 units of blood transfused during my surgery, life support, and ICU stay in Oct-Nov 2014.
Ironically, I can no longer give blood, due to the surgeries, transfusions, and anti-coagulant medications I must now take for the rest of my life. So, I need your help...
PLEASE give blood, if you can. Take a moment to roll up your sleeve and restore your community's blood supply. I was a donor for many years and eventually dipped deep into the supply. Someday, you or someone you love may need the same.
Find a blood drive near you.

Thanks.
Surgery Saga: The Final Chapter
Operation 5: Ileostomy Takedown
I'm going to have surgery tomorrow to reattach my small and large intestines. They've been apart since November 8, 2014.
They used to work well together, but as we saw in chapter 2 of Surgery Saga (Operation 2: Colon Resection), a part of my large intestine had to be removed due to insufficient oxygen supply during my time on ECMO life support (the cliffhanger ending to the inaugural chapter of Surgery Saga, Operation 1: Bentall Nightmare).
I've learned to adjust to having an ostomy through the remaining chapters of this saga (Operation 3: Coronary Bypass and Operation 4: ICD Placement). Now, it is time to return to the joy of pooping once again (sorry for the TMI).
As always, I appreciate the support and positive vibes that family and friends have provided to me, Michele, and the girls during this "Surgery Saga". I hope to be home by Monday. I'll keep you posted.
good luck john! hope all goes well
all the best to you, your family and the medical team supporting you.
Good luck today johnnYYac! Thanks for everything you do for all of the Jacketeers 'round the world.

Good luck man!
Good Luck!!
Thinking about you JY! Love ya man.
good luck, sir!
Good luck Yac! A lot of people are thinking about you these days. I hope the final chapter of the saga is the easiest, quickest, and shortest of them all.
Get well soon! Looking for a good update on you. Be well!
We Love You!!!
Thoughts and good vibes your way Iron Man Yac. Looking forward to seeing you here again.
Great to ready you're doing well! Great to see all the love on here too!!
Thanks for all the good vibes and well wishes. Still in the hospital, still nothing to eat or drink since last Wednesday night, except water sips for pills. Surgery seems to have gone fine. Just need to pass gas to show signs of bowel activity. Hard to do without food.

Seriously though, good to hear John. I'll be crossing my fingers as well for you to get released tomorrow.
Heal fast, Yac. The sooner you do, the sooner you can sluice some beer through those rejoined intestinal bits and pieces.
Hope you got released John. Glad to hear you made it through this round ok! I second what Mark said!!!
Sending you all the best wishes for a quick recovery! May the power of the Jacket give you strength to go forward!

Get well soon, good sir.
I'm home! Staples came out today. My large intestine remembered how to work after a two-year vacation, though it was an ugly awakening... I came home from the hospital on Sept. 2. Thanks for all the support.
In less than two years, I have been hospitalized 10 times for a total of 78 days. I've had 5 major surgeries (aortic aneurysm repair w/mechanical aortic valve, colon resection w/ileostomy, coronary bypass, ICD placement, and ostomy takedown) and spent over 50 hours in the OR. I was on life support for 2 weeks, with my chest open for 10 days. I've had nearly 250 units of blood transfused.
Among the livin'

I didn't think I'd make it...
Actually, I did think I'd make it, because I was carried through these storms by the love and support of family, friends... and Forum!
Thanks again!
:) damn that's a lot to go through!!
So glad you are ok.
Very happy to hear you are back home and resting comfortably! You were in my thoughts and prayers sir! Just in time for the fall season and next year hopefully back to a full MMJ lineup of shows and new music!

Dude, I looked at St. Lou, Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, and Omaha. Everything else is 4+ hours drive and/or is a date too close to Thanksgiving plans. Omaha is 3.5 hours and falls on a doable date. Already booked a hotel 3 minute walk from the venue. I've been well enough to catch Blitzen Trapper here in Iowa City a few nights ago and a free PHJB/Trombone Shorty show last week. Just sore and look like a shark attack victim....
I can't believe it's over a year since I've seen this thread. I never saw those life support pix which are amazing and scary all at the same time.
You have navigated a tortuous journey, to say the least, these past two years and have weathered the storm. I couldn't believe how good you looked at Red Rocks. It was great to see.
And now, it seems like all of the major body parts are back in place and functioning which is wonderful. You deserve some smooth sailing for a LONG time and a LOT of MMJ shows. I'm sure the healing power of music didn't hurt

Rob, thanks so much for the support you and Teri provided along the way these past two years. I'm ashamed at how little time I spent with you at Red Rocks, as you are such great friends and we barely saw each other. It was that way for so many in my MMJ family that weekend, but I wish we could cross paths more often and for longer periods of time.
I'll be posting again when I hit the 2-year anniversary, but your mention of the life support pictures reminded me of one I didn't post here yet. My wife, Michele, knew what I needed while trying to ignore the light at the end of the tunnel... that would have been a bad idea!

Talk about a powerful photo. Whew. And amongst all the tubes and wires and other gadgets is the single most important device, putting out the healing vibes. You've been through a lot, John, and it has been wonderful seeing the band and our forum folks rallying for you all along the way. I guess there's no doubt that all of this support and having milestones of that next MMJ show speeded your recovery.
Sorry to hear about your battles for disability. That stuff can be draining and demoralizing when all you want is what you deserve. Maybe you should send them some of these intensive care photos.
Hey, we wish we could have spent more time together at RR, as well, but there were so many people and so much craziness we're just glad we got to spend some time with you. We'll make up for it at the next few shows. You could always come out for Jim's show in DC on 11/19
