"One thing I'll add- and I imagine I'm speaking for many others here when I write this- the difference between my ideal as depicted in the last post and what OBH"s have been so far is: All things being equal- even if money was no issue- I'd be more excited for the experience to see them at the Ryman or Hollywood Bowl  or any other cool venue that I've never been to rather than going to an OBH. If the 3 OBH's were marked by surprise 3rd sets , 3 bust outs per night that haven't been heard since T5, or collaborations such as Gary Clark Jr doing the 3rd guitar thing then I would do everything necessary to be there for OBH4. As it stands now I'm perfectly content waiting for the downloads of it in April 2018."

For a guy who didn't seem to like anything about OBH3, you want someone to give you free codes?

Yes that's precisely the case. I apologize for any angst this may cause you.

Enjoying my first listen-through. Just finished night 1, which was a good refresher for me. Initial thoughts:
- Sound quality is best of the OBH1/2/3 soundboards. Crystal clear with great bass. Crowd noise is virtually absent. I'm listening to MP3's, so not sure if that is the case with FLAC or FLACHD.
- Definitely a chill vibe on night 1.
- Loving the horns. Wish PHJB were at every show.
- Highlights: Picture of You (my first!), Wish You Were Here (amazing), Cobra (pretty tame until the very end, then psychadelic), Dancefloors (with horns!), PWW (they seem to be amping this one up everytime they play it), Like a Rolling Stone (just perfect).
- Disappointments (maybe not the right word): Spring (really wanted to hear Merrill Garbus join them, but pretty average version), Steam (just didn't connect with me, and it usually does)

On to night 2!

hey dontgetupset, you've gone after us honest Jacket fans who actually are willing to shell out our money to this band and not gripe and complain when this band plays 3 shows in 4 nights, ripping yer face off, surrounded by a ton of amazing people in a great location and then you hit us up for codes??? bullshit man, seriously, you need to be called out. There we go.

Anyway, back to the OBH shows, just put in the first one and my god, Carl is bringing me back to Nashville circa 1957 with that pedal steel work on "This Land Is Your Land", unbelievable.

Wow... dontgetupset's comments about the setlists at OBH were pretty on point, and made pretty respectfully in my opinion. This forum is awesome but does get a little weird when anything that even approaches a criticism is brought up.

its not the criticism, I've criticized Jacket a few times, it's the fact that he criticizes but then demands others to send him their codes, from the money they spent either for OBH or for the recordings. It's just......not really cool, ya know? I don't know why I have to explain it in depth, it's just.....kinda moochery, kinda lame?? i cant find a word that ties it up perfectly, but when I first read his post it made me feel like he's one of those types of people who talks shit on someone, but then when they're stuck and need a ride suddenly that person's their best friend, ya know what I mean???? Just annoyed by it was all. Criticize all you want, I was just calling him out for being a dick about OBH and then demanding codes from others who actually enjoyed it and wanted to relive it.

btw, just listened to Steam Engine and besides the awesome guitar feedback for a few minutes before the sax, it wasn't a good Steam. I usually get this "in awe" feeling from ANY Steam, but upon my first listen it didn't hit me.

See , I criticize them fairly quite often, I just thought dontgetupset was being a little selfish and rude by demanding the codes. But don't worry, dontgetupset, I'm not really even upset, it's just.....it wasn't really a cool thing to read.

Sorry if I was rude to you in return, dontgetupset.

Did he demand the codes or did he offer to pay someone that had extra codes, though?

it seemed to me that he just started demanding them, I could be wrong, though, as there seemed to be 20 people doing the same thing. Just thought it wasn't very tactful. He said he'd buy them if nobody would give him any....which begs the question: why not just go ahead and support this band in an era when nobody does???

Let's get back to the recordings, MOWJO8185, I wasn't looking for a fight, just was wanting that moochery stuff to stop.

I'm the king of wishing the band would play Come Closer or How Could I Know, Chills, Death Is The Easy Way, etc but this band's sheer existence should be ENOUGH for even the most die hard obsessive (I would count myself as one). Just sayin.....

- Rebel Rebel is HOTTTTTT!!!!!
- Mother was perfection!!!!!! Those backing vocals by Lucius and that amazing guitar entrance by Carl....goddamn!
- REALLY REALLY LOVE the Here Comes The Sun Pts 1 & 2. Absolutely spell binding , haunting and optimistic at the same time

- that Cobra ending......JEEEEEEEZUS! I sorely sorely wish the whole Cobra would've been top notch, because that ending was so cool and had the hallmarks of a one off psychedelic frenzy in the sky, with this Sabbath / Metalica guitar by Jim...good god. almost finished, full perspective will be had at some point soon.

Maybe I'm just not in such a Jacket phase as I usually am (i've been listening to them like crazy since 2004, but on and off as I get into other bands, too, but in the passed 4 years it's been Jacket on and off more often than any other band, of course) to the point I think I sometimes take certain performances for granted, Trying not to though, who knows a Jacket phase is probably a day away.

Hi. Just got back from a walk and am seeing this craziness. I like listening to as many Jacket shows as I can in as high quality as possible. Oftentimes after listening I will tell myself " that was mind-blowing" or "that was an off night." Most non cult members I know approach their favorite bands that was too. A Grateful Dead fan I know who saw hundreds of shows is very quick to explain nights that changed his life forever and Dead shows that he was able to forget 5 minutes later due to their (relative) mediocrity.

Along these same lines setlists can often give us insight into what was going on sonically without actually having heard the music itself. The hypothesis one may develop can then be proven or disproven from an actual listen to the music in question. In the case of OBH3 (and OBH1- go back and see my very similar complaints) I was surprised especially in light of the exorbitant cost that the shows seemed to be non-all-time-great-shows. Since posting this a month ago there have been Dave and Tim and Widespread shows (see: http://www.jambands.com/news/2017/02/26/dave-matthews-and-tim-reynolds-close-mexico-event-with-vusi-mahlasela-more-bustouts and https://www.jambase.com/article/widespread-panic-kicks-off-panic-en-la-playa-cinco-in-mexico ) that have only further cemented my opinion (note the word "opinion") about what could have been and what was.

I'm not sure if your freak-out is more the result of wanting to prevent me from hearing these shows (would be strange thing to penalize a "dissenter" with depriving them of hearing these shows) or the fact that I'd prefer not paying if someone has extras. I asked for the codes (which I've done before) from someone who would not be using them in order to not have to pay for something unnecessarily. I'm not gonna list all the analogous situations in life that we look to save a buck if we can but yes if someone has an extra that would go to waste I would gladly use it and use it to further flesh out what my take on OBH3 is.

On a final note I'm glad that there are (many) people in this forum that can discuss their favorite band without cursing, foaming at the mouth, having their pulse hit 200, and allowing it to overtake them emotionally (that happens to be similar to the way I feel in seeing such a limited tour announced yesterday :) but I have "sources" that tell me more dates are coming...)

dood im sorry if you felt thats what I was saying but that's absolutely not what I meant. If you want my personal code, PM me and Ill gladly let you hear the shows I have no problem sharing them, it's how you went about it bro.

As someone who was neither in attendance nor listened to the recordings, the most important question before buying the recordings is:

not sure what the hell you're talking about with Steam - Carl dropped one note early, but came back raging.  Listen at 4:18.  He plays 8-10 picking notes in under a second that will slice your cortex open.  Only thing missing was Patrick thunder at the end.

I'm a firm believer that night one was the second best Jacket  shown I've ever seen out of 33. On FIRE, perfect setlist and the covers were right up my alley.

Anyone tape the sound check with golden into here comes the Sun?  Totally different arrangement than what was played night 1.  Golden music and tempo with Jim singing in a higher register.

millerjustin.....oh my god......cortex slit open by Carl! those are really subtle, awesome note choices by Carl, I really had to listen for them, they can get lost under Jim's vocals etc, but holy shit, his lead playing throughout is so tasteful. It's kinda got a more laid-back spacey vibe to it and it's trancing me out

RULE #1: NEVER BETRAY A STEAM ENGINE

still not my favorite Steam, but it wasn't even close to as bad as I said, remember those were first impressions. the OBH recordings usually have to settle on you for a bit, certain parts click, others don't. But wow...glad I listened again and now here I go again

i feel like Carl experiments too much with the Masterplan solo, ever since I heard my favorite version, from the ACL 2016 recording, it's been hard for me to find one that can top it, the solo is just perfect and for once it feels like they kept playing as long as Carl wanted to solo instead of stopping and killing the buzz before he's even reached a crescendo.

But, still...this is Carl Broemel....face melting Carl.

Night I is unbelievable and the longest (by 2 minutes) OBH show yet. If it had Sign O'The Times on that nights setlist, it would've been easily the best OBH show yet.

Btw, that RUN THRU is easily the best RUN THRU i've heard in A LONG TIME. That song has worn me out over the years (just heard it too many damn times) but I love how heavy they did it, a lot of feedback and atmospheric delay rampages to give it this edge. Loved the OBHIII version.

I have video of most of the sound check from our deck - the HCTS has some funny and annoying chatter from people on our deck.  The Spring is awesome tho - I'll work on placing on youtube and link here

Sign O' The Times is the best cover Jacket have done since Hit It & Quit It

Father Figure, dude.  And it's especially good when you hear them playing it in their green room through your bedroom ceiling during a much needed afternoon nap

wait.....was this them rehearsing it at OBH when you first heard it? confused sorry hahah

millerjustin.....oh my god......cortex slit open by Carl! those are really subtle, awesome note choices by Carl, I really had to listen for them, they can get lost under Jim's vocals etc, but holy shit, his lead playing throughout is so tasteful.

But wow...glad I listened again and now here I go again

our suite was right under their green room (stage front, Jim side) - we heard them playing upstairs almost every afternoon (knew Father Figure was coming well in advance).

One of the best parts was constantly bumping into them in the stairwell

That's cool you could hear them above you, I knew they were up there but was surprised you couldn't even hear them outside. I'm surprised there hasn't been more comments on "Father Figure" that was fricking amazing with Lucius. One of my favorite moments that night along with Carl's channeling of David Gilmour on "Another Brick In The Wall"

Gotta love the way Jim sings pop songs .
Lucius's luscious vocals are pure sex

when Bo's keys come in on "Like a Rolling Stone"...

Lots of words have been posted here on Covers vs Rare Cuts and after listening to Night 1 a bunch, I have to say I think the covers fit perfectly since the band had the chance to have backing vocs from Lucius (esp on the Floyd covers) and horns from PHJB to really do something special. Deep cuts can happen almost anytime they play, but they can't do "Like a Rolling Stone" like that except at something like OBH.

I would pay a premium for tickets if Lucius and PHJB were w/ the band on a full tour.

So here's my take on the covers, especially in relation to One Big Holiday or another multinight run somewhere.  I think the way Jacket does their cover songs, pretty much note for note reverence, but still making it their own, is great.  My first real exposure to Jacket was OBH 2015.  I had caught one Americarama show in SoCal and liked them enough to venture down to Mexico for a musical vacation.  I didn't know Jacket's music very much, except for playing their Storytellers episode to death.  But when they opened with Ride Like The Wind, and with the other covers they played that first night (through the whole week), the songs (covers & originals) sucked me in.  I had a blast, and couldn't wait to see them again.  The wife & I saw them again in 2015 at Red Rocks, and by that point I had really gotten into their songs and albums, and am all the better for it.

All of this said, here's my thoughts on the covers: I think in a One Big Holiday type situation, the covers are a great addition to get the crowd into it.  But you have a diehard set of fans who traveled to see you play, so I'd keep a handful (4 - 5) of covers for night 1, maybe one or two for night 2, and then keep night 3 almost all jacket, save for one grand cover song to bring out everybody for one last sendoff as a mainset closer (ala Rainy Day Women).  Then for the encore, nothing but Jacket until the last notes of OBH are reduced to tinnitus in my ears.

Just my two cents on the covers vs. original / deep cuts debate.  And really, as long as they keep playing, and keep doing One Big Holidays, we're all the winners here.

That is a huge bummer.  I've never had an issue downloading any of the OBH shows before.  Hope you get the full shows!

Yo Johnny!  In the past ld.com has sent me missing songs even when I couldn't produce my code through email. It took time but I've been able to get the complete shows. I've sent them an email already.  I don't know why but All You need is Love is also missing but I thought it wasn't available due to licensing or something

Wowza Johnny! You didn't need to send anything but I extremely appreciate it ! I'm at work but will investigate this further after im off. You guys are the best. Seriously Jacket fans have a vibe about them . Btw first day at my new job, wearing my It Still Moves shirt under my white shirt and tie. My boss already saw it and loves MMJ and said anytime I wanna wear this shirt I don't have to wear a tie ....

Is that cool or what???? The boss saw them at T5 all nights and MSG 2008 & 2011 and every Utah Jacket show since 2003...

What the world needs now is Jacket sweet Jacket. ..not just for some. .but for everyone

I have always had good experience with them. I had an issue downloading my OBH3 songs which I used my DL codes and upgraded the audio which I had to pay for. I was on the road for work and trying to DL from hotel wifi and it was acting real screwy and I was only able to DL half of night one. I emailed them and informed them of my issue and they responded the next morning and just told me to let them know when I was home and they reset all three nights for me for 48 hours no questions asked. Shoot em' an email.
