Post by: hoojack on Mar 13, 2017, 05:51 PM
I'll start this off -

Hoojack + mrs hoojack

FYI - sturgillis playing Friday at the same venue and would make for one hell of a weekend for any out of towners

Looking to go but may not be able to attend.  Do you know if you can put Roll Call tickets in someone else's name if need be?

Anyone else surprised at how fast the tickets are selling out? Pit and P2 are already sold out? How many Roll Call members are in Charlotte?

I'm surprised as well with how quickly the pit sold out. They were gone at 10:01 when I finally got on the page, but lucked out with first row 103. Must have only been a handful out there for the pre-sale.

As for a meetup, there is a bar literally next door to the venue, VBGB. Some of us have had a pre-show meetup before. Great spot, tons of libations (clt has incredible local beer), food is solid, plus they have giant Jenga, Connect Four, etc.

Those of us who bought our tickets via Roll Call, will our tickets be available at Wil Call?  Also, how is the venue?  Been to The Fillmore a couple of times, but not the amphitheater.  Are blankets only allowed on the lawn area or can we bring chairs?  Are we allowed to bring a poster tube inside?

Poster tubes should be fine as well as blankets.  Amphitheatre is really nice but no cover.  not sure about chairs, but imagine the lawn will be fairly full for this show

I think the low sitting chairs are fine but the lawn will be full. You're gonna want to get in early if you plan on setting up a chair. It's a great venue though. My only complaint is sometimes the lawn is a little oversold.

Pumped for the show. I just secured tickets for sturgill Friday so it's going to be a great weekend for music. NSL you bringing your gear again this year?? I  always enjoy your recordings and it's nice having a copy of the shows I go to.

Seconded for VBGB being an awesome spot. They make the best beer cheese pretzels I've ever had. Also 8.2.0 (also next door) is apparently really good pizza.

I dont remember Tropics for some reason, it was a standard set but I thought they brought it. Maybe theres some distaste from Sturgill Simpson yesterday from me, and i ended up getting 2nd row in pit tonight as well to brighten my spirits, but i enjoyed the show.

That's weird, any idea why you couldn't record?

I thought it was a great set. No Bs, no filler.  Very little chatter but they played their ass off. Saw sturgill last night and there was no comparison. They boys blew him out of the water without any deap cuts. The set list seemed to be impacted by the delay.

Weather related maybe? Perhaps they didn't want any extra lightning rods and power chords.
That's a bummer, prepping and packing all your gear to get turned around is no fun. Thanks for the effort, much appreciated anyhow

absolutely! tapers we appreciate your attempts! it must've been the lightning because the Jacket don't play 17 songs, they just don't. It's at least 19 at the shortest and that's for the smallest of shows. Hate to see them playing such shorter sets. Even Nashville had 20 songs on the dot, still looked fantastic, but it'd be nice to hear these newer shows, sad there's no tapes yet. sorry for such a short show guys, 17 songs is extremely short for Jacket. Hope it was still great though

Oops. We weren't allowed to audio record tonight

Weather related maybe? Perhaps they didn't want any extra lightning rods and power chords.
That's a bummer, prepping and packing all your gear to get turned around is no fun. Thanks for the effort, much appreciated anyhow

I dont remember Tropics for some reason, it was a standard set but I thought they brought it. Maybe theres some distaste from Sturgill Simpson yesterday from me, and i ended up getting 2nd row in pit tonight as well to brighten my spirits, but i enjoyed the show.

what happened at Stu?

Can't speak for Scotty but my entire crew was disappointed in sturgill. I felt it started off good but never picked up and the energy died. He had some technical issues with one of his peddles during welcome to earth (about song 4 or 5 maybe) which pissed him off. Instead of restarting the song, he never finished it and imo the show never fully recovered. The peddle messed up again later in the set and it kinda felt like his attitude carried over to the audience. It was a short show with what felt like a very abrupt ending about 30 min before curfew. I was also hoping for horns and the full band but got the stripped down version.

Not to derail this thread, but i kind of got the same feeling at the show in Houston last year, he just didn't seem excited, and almost felt awkward. Maybe he just doesn't have that stage presence that others have. He played most of Metamodern Sounds, and then played all of Sailors Guide from front to end, pretty much sounded exactly like the studio versions, then walked off the stage with no encore and what felt like no "Thank You"

very similar experience seeing Sturgill at Forecastle a few years ago. lack of enthusiasm, sound issues, no communication with the audience. I wouldn't be running out to see him again.

We all got turned to record tonight. Huge bummer. Show was great

What exactly does that mean?

Also, the setlist looks about as vanilla as it gets, however i have no doubt it was still a great show.

Nothing to do with weather.  100% venue staff being uninformed/not willing to actually call and check on it.  Somebody got through and taped from the lawn

Does anyone know if a partial refund/credit will be issue to ticket holders for the delay? Show started an hour late. Gary played a shorter set and MMJ played one of the shorter sets they've played in quite some time.

who's fault was it that it rained? Gary's or MMJ's?

I was at roo '08. It's pretty clear Jim can control the rain. But if we're looking to place blame for this one , I say blame sturgill. And neko for 2011 if we're talking about short sets.

Full show video. Hope its ok to post a link.
My first time here.
First MMJ show the other night, long time listener.
Had a great time despite the weather. Great show, great band
Want to echo the sentiments about Sturgill the night before. A very stranger show, no interaction with crowd, you could tell he was very angry, abruptly quit 95 minutes in.

Ha, just saw the Sturgill comments in here. Saw him Saturday in Cary and he mentioned multiple things about being aggravated in Charlotte about how people were upset about him not having the horns. I can understand that, but it was known prior to this tour it wouldn't be so not sure why it would surprise anyone.

And he's never done an encore, at least not when I've ever seen him. Was a solid show, obviously it's not comparable to something like a MMJ show. But good for what it was.

FYI, I was informed by Live Nation today that there have been numerous inquiries about a partial refund/credit from last Saturday's show and it is taking them longer to process the requests than usual because of the volume of these requests. To be continued...

In regards to Sturgill, I read a review from his show in Cary the night after Charlotte that said he explained he doesn't do encores because he thinks its a silly ritual and a waste of time so he's just going to stay on stage and rock.

I can kind of get behind that. But it didn't seem like the end of a show when he ended. if you're not gonna do an encore you better end with a good finale

According to the setlist he ended with Call to Arms and then a jam into Freddie King's going down just like the next night.  I'm not sure he has anything better than that for a finale.
