Title: The Magnix MMJ Live Recordings Archive Project
Post by: Kory on Feb 04, 2007, 07:57 PM
Hello All!
Hopefully it's alright to speak on behalf of Magnix...

Magnix is the guy that put together the first MMJ website and runs the show locater and Nashville to Kentucky site that we all love. Brian and myself have been talking to him lately and he is in possession of a mass of shows that don't ever get to see the light of day in most cases. He is attempting to get all that stuff out there starting with the oldest.

The first volume of this collection has been posted to the archive, you'll also find more information there about updating the show locater and such.
Take care and lets all give a shout out to Ger for getting this stuff out there as well as hosting and maintaining the site we use for reference.

Thank Ger!

Thank you much. Would you mind updating this thread when a new show gets posted? Is that the rocket man from the Early Recordings?

Thanks Kory for starting this thread, I just sent you an email about it.

For those that haven't seen it yet, about two weeks ago I already uploaded a sort of appetizer to the Live Music Archive. It's the pre-FM recording of MMJ's session at KVRX radio in Austin, TX on October 15, 2000. This could be considered volume 0 in my project. It's not included in the numbering of the project, because I already torrented the same SHN-files back in 2003. Check it out here: http://www.archive.org/details/mmj2000-10-15.KVRX

QuoteIs that the rocket man from the Early Recordings?
No it's not. The Rocket Man on volume 1 of the Early Recordings discs is the same as originally released on the "Little Darla Has A Treat For You v.12" v/a CD. This CD is from July 1999, while the version for "De Avonden" was recorded on January 26, 2000. It's an amazing version I think. It was recorded in the stairwell of the studio, which gives the recording an extra dimension. For those who have seen the Dutch VPRO TV documentary "This Is Not America", the recording of this song can be seen in that documentary.

Information on all songs MMJ put out, can be found here: http://www.gerpotze.com/mymorningjacket/songlist.html. It has been awhile since it was last updated (April 2006), but it gives all information on where to find the 'old stuff'.

Another relevant link:
http://www.magnix.demon.nl/mmj/archive/setlists/000220.htm for information on the mentioned TV documentary

Glad you all like it so far  8-). Volume 4 is being uploaded as we speak. I won't keep them coming this fast, as I soon have to rip 'new' discs, go through the recordings to check and repair any flaws (if present), encode to FLAC, and compile background information on the recording (source, lineage, and such). Just keep checking this thread.

I would also appreciate feedback on the Archive through the review-option offered there. It will help people who are not on this forum. Thanks.

The information on the years 1999-2002 on the showfinder (see the link in the first post of this thread) site has now been expanded with information about known recordings. If anyone has additional information or is sitting on any uncirculated recordings, please get in touch!

Ehmm, what about volume 0 or 1  ;D

See the first post of this thread for links to the just added volumes 5a, 5b and 6. Also, a link to volume 7 will soon be added as well. All are small sets of files, but you all take your time downloading and listening to this stuff as volume 8 won't go up before the weekend ... that however will be a complete audience recorded show.

Dylan, do you agree we should pull the other tape from the archive just so there is one definitive copy?

Quotedefinitely. I'm not throwing my cassette away though.

No, never throw away anything original. I have ripped discs I got in a trade, edited and (re)mastered the recording, and reburned, but I always keep the original disc for future reference. The same goes for tapes I have transferred to CD-R. Like for this project I compare possible newer discs I made or received to what I originally got. When time moves on, my knowledge (plus the available software) on this matter expanded, so I might in some cases completely redo a job I already did years ago.

I just compared, and I hear what you mean as far as the music goes. There's however no match lyricwise. Still, I feel I know this song, but in all those years I haven't found out what it is ... If someone does, please tell.

It has to be an early version or alternate lyrics... Same guitar even the tapping at the start sounds just like on "Heartbreakin' Man" EP./

well, when was Heartbreakin Man EP put out? 99 or was it early 2000?

I planned on having a closer listen later tonight ...
However, you know where to find all info regarding when what was released ;-)

R.I.P.V.G. was already on the ltd. bonus 7"single that came with "The Tennessee Fire" 2LP-set, which was released in May 1999. The "Heartbreakin Man" EP is from May 2000. When having another, closer listen, I will listen to both versions ... never noticed a difference, but who knows ...

No problem, you're more than welcome!

QuoteLet's just not discuss that 7" unless you have an extra you'll sell me Ger...  :-?

I want that so bad!!

Oops, I have a confession to make ... Yes, I have two copies! However, I won't sell, sorry. I'll explain why ...

I have the original Tennessee Fire 2LP-set with the single, and I have one extra copy of the 7", which I actually got first.

After I became a MMJ fan on January 31, 2000 and set up the site on February 20, 2000 after watching the VPRO documentary "This Is Not America", I searched high and low to get every release out there at that time:
- "The Tennessee Fire" CD and 2LP with 7" single;
the compilations with at the time exclusive tracks:
- "Little Darla Has A Taste For You v.1" vinyl single (incl. "There's Just One Thing");
- "Little Darla Has A Treat For You v.12" CD (incl. "Rocket Man");
- "Little Darla Has A Treat For You v.13" CD (incl. "Death Is The Easy Way");
- "Little Darla Has A Treat For You v.14" CD (incl. "Mother");
and one compilation with a non-exclusive track, but I wanted everything then:
-"Little Darla Has A Treat For You v.11" CD (incl. "They Ran" from the at the time forthcoming album).

Yes, that was all! In the months/years following, I bought every release right when it came out.

Soon after I had set up the site I also got in touch with Jim, Johnny, and Tom (I never spoke to first drummer J. if I remember it right), and met them in person at the April 8, 2000 show. They came back in July that year, where I saw them play at the Swingin' Groningen Festival on the 7th. After the gig we met, and Jim handed me quite a few presents, including a copy of the 7" single! I had told him I had been unable to find the 2LP with the single so far, and he remembered!

And will you believe my surprise, when exactly two weeks later I visited one of my favourite recordstores at the time (now gone) in my then hometown Amsterdam, and found a copy of the 2LP with the single! Had I overlooked it before, had the shopowner been able to find another copy? I don't know, but since I had been trying to find it so desperately, I bought it right away.

So, that's the story of my two copies, and because I want to keep one as the original package, and I got the other as a present, I feel bad selling it.

I also have two copies of the At Dawn demos CD, one with the CD, and one with the 2LP. I first only bought the double CD-set when it was released in April 2001. On a Sunday, late January 2005 I was browsing the salesbins of one of the best recordstores in Amsterdam (Get Records). They very rarely have stuff on sale, but had to make some room now. I then came across, I think four copies of the "At Dawn" double LP with the demos CD for only 8 euros each. I couldn't resist buying it. A friend of mine bought a copy too. Very soon after, the other copies were gone. Now I think, I should have bought the other copies too, sit on it for a while, and sell it. Oh well, hopefully someone else has had the thrill of finding it!?

Also, the Heartbreakin Man EP has been on sale at another recordstore here in the summer of 2003. It was only 3.99 euros then. That same friend of mine bought a copy, and I bought two for fellow MMJ collectors. One for a guy who sent me an original copy of the Mother Lodge CD, the one with the George Harrison cover on it. I also bought him the Bad Jazz and Gold Hole singles, which I was still able to find then ... I got my own copies straight from the UK at the time of their release, but one store in Amsterdam had a few copies of both singles in stock until the end of 2003 (after I bought a copy of each of them, the owner told me he still had at least one of each in stock). Of course they're long gone now.

Oh well, only a year ago the hotel Roy CD was still available in Louisville for only 8 USD. If only I had known, if someone had told me, if I had been there ... If I was there, at the right time, the right place ... If I had been alive when Elvis released his first single, The Beatles, Stones, just to name a 'few' ... Oh well, I was there when Britpop was born, to name another one ... I was there when My Morning Jacket became the best band around, to name the topic why we are all here!

No one would blame you Ger, I couldn't sell a 7" that Jim himself gave me or break up a set. Thanks for the stories, I love reading that kind of stuff, you've got some great deals over time and I've had to pay for what I've got through the nose but I don't regret it one bit, after all, it's only money and if it makes you happy and you can scrape up the dough, you should get it.

Interesting story.  I have wondered when looking at your site.  I wish we would've known each other back in the day, we would've gotten along fabulously.

In those days, I didn't have a lot of money being a college students and all, so I couldn't snatch up everything.  Plus, since I was in the same city as the band and kind of knew them outside of the music I couldn't help but thinking "am I just really wrapped up in this band and they're not really going to make it"?  Plus, having friends who know the band some of them would kind of look down their nose at me for collecting their records and standing in front of the band and rocking out at shows rather than milling around so I could be seen.

Anyway, I passed up on a lot of deals I should have picked up including gold hole and the at dawn vinyl.  I bought the CD with the demo and I thought that would be enough.  After the record was still for sale a year later I thought I could wait around forever, but of course I was wrong.  I really did believe in the band I just didn't have the money to invest, if I had I would have snatched multiples copies of all the limited releases.

Thanks for the stories, the site, and the recordings Ger, you're an mmj hall-of-famer!

My ex has that original Tennessee Fire 2LP-set with the 7" and I was so tempted to swipe it before I moved out but I didn't because I'd feel too guilty. We're still friends and last summer I tried to buy it from him and he wouldn't budge no matter what I offered him.

Way to go Ger!

Thanks for putting the goodies out.

This will be the first time I have gotten to hear any recordings of Jim James Solo.
I got to see Jim solo once and I thought it was fantastic.  He was not the headliner that night, but I bet Patti Griffin wish he would have been.  Her set was great, but it was obvious that all the folks came out for Jim.

Thanks again.

And I should note that volume 15 completes the year 2000. Including volume 0, and the already available May 13 show, there are now 17 different dates/shows/sessions available for the year 2000 (18 of you count the two different sources for the 2 Meter Sessies individually). Not bad I think ...

Unfortunately 2001 does not have that many recordings in circulation. Of course there are already 5 dates up at the archive, and so far it looks like I can 'only' add 4 or 5 more. By the way, Dylan, will you take care of the 9/8 Planetarium show?

Furthermore, there are two 2000 dates I know that have been taped, and I have tried to track them down, but to no avail so far. I have been in touch with the taper, but the communication went dead. These are the April 3 show at the 013 in Tilburg, The Netherlands and the April 13 show at the Effenaar in Eindhoven, The Netherlands.

There are also three 2001 shows which have been recorded, but never made it out to the open. I was standing next to the taper at one of them, and that same taper also recorded another show, but the recordings never have come into circulation as far as I know. And believe me, I have been trying. I was at both shows he recorded, so I would really love to have those tapes! These are the May 25 show at the Vera club in Groningen, The Netherlands, the May 26 show at the Ancienne Belgique Club in Brussels, Belgium, and the May 28 show at the Paradiso in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. I was at both Dutch shows ... my 5th & 6th MMJ live experience since January 2000! Too bad they've come over so few times after that (only two, of which I even had to miss one).

Well, since this thread has gone silent with my little break from working on the archive, I think I'll answer this one ...
As far as I know this is indeed the only recording, and it would have been the one I was supposed to upload as well. The only adjustment I would have done, was split the contineous track into separate ones.
And although there may be better recordings in circulation of other shows, I'm very glad this particular show has been recorded. because it was a very special night!

You're more than welcome!

I'm not uploading my source of the March 2nd show at the BRYCC house, because it's identical to what is already on the archive. I downloaded that version and compared. Even the tracksplits are the same. So I guess with "tape" you actually mean "CD" or better "CD-R" (the lineage there says: MD > CD > EAC-Rip > wav > flac).
Anyway, I got it on CD-R myself (I think KC Guetig gave it to me in May that year when they played here), but I had no lineage info. I guess it's mostly the same as the archive-version.
Title: Re: The Magnix MMJ Live Recordings Archive project

I got it from Lee Gutterman, the taper.  He taped the show on Sony MD and then burnt the show to CDR and gave me a copy. I'm sure he gave Guetig a copy at that time as well.  I don't know what program he used to burn it though.

I guess you have all been patiently waiting for the next volume of the archive?! ;-) I have been busy with a lot of other things, mostly non-MMJ, some non-music, but also a few other 'music related projects' ... Anyhow, the MMJ archive project is still in progress ... So, here's a new volume for you all to enjoy!

As I wrote before, there are not that many 2001-shows in circulation (although I know of shows that have been taped, but never surfaced, see my previous posts). The previous volume of the archive is the February 24, 2001 "Insomniacathon" show in Louisville, KY. I also have the March 2 and March 17 from back then, but these are the same sources as already available through the Live Music Archive. Next in line is a great, but short recording of the last performance of the short May 2001 tour through Belgium and The Netherlands. They did three shows in each country. Of that total of six shows, I know of three that have been recorded, but they still have to see the light of day ... I was at two of these shows, and was even standing next to the taper at one of them, but even several attempts didn't get the recordings to me ... (and this was the last time I mentioned this!) ... The 7th performance was their second at the "Club Lek" radio show for VPRO Radio at the Studio Amstel in Amsterdam. It was aired live on the radio, and that broadcast was captured on tape by yours truly. See the info-file over at the archive for further details ... By the way, this performance supposedly has also been taped from the audience by the same tapers as just mentioned (oops, I did it again ;-) ). Oh, and this second Club Lek performance has so far also been their last there. They were going to do another one on November 5, 2003, but it was cancelled due to Jim being ill. Subsequently also two shows in Germany were cancelled, which postponed their German debut for a couple of days ... and made the Amsterdam show on November 3, 2003 the last Dutch show so far (which is a huge shame! remember where it all really started?).

Also see the My Morning Jacket live archive 1999-2004 @ http://www.magnix.demon.nl/mmj/archive/ for this kind of information (when, where) ...

Enjoy!

Although it's pretty quiet at this very thread, I guess you all are downloading the latest addition to the archive!? I mean, looking at the number of downloads of the Club Lek recording in less than three days ...

Anyhow, I was doing some researching for the next volume, and was wondering about the show that is next in my archive, but is also in the Live Music Archive already: the September 1, 2001 Jim solo show in Bloomington, IN. All these years, I have had this one listed as Jim James solo @ the Secretly Canadian Barbecue, Bloomington, IN. The list of past shows on the official site has the same details (however, that's not unusual, as we shared a lot of information back then). But somewhere last year (if I remember correctly) the same recording appeared on the LMA as live at Space 101; Blommington Fest - Jagjaguwar Showcase, Bloomington, IN. Well, Blommington has to be Bloomington too I guess, but can anyone provide more details about this performance?

Secretly Canadian and Jagjaguwar work very closely together, I think they're owned by the same people so it was probably a Secretly Canadian/Jagjaguwar happening. Looks to me that the info on the Archive is about right, except for the Blommington part.

You're right that Secretly Canadian and Jagjaguwar are related, so I was thinking the same actually, but the "barbecue" part doesn't make sense when it was an inside performance. I mean, I expect a barbecue to be outside, right ;-)
Anyways, I guess we both 'have to' change the info the sites!?

it was probably a barbeque restaurant.  you may not have those kind of eateries overseas.  Thanks a ton for the shows.  I really wish we could get more of the 2001 shows to the surface.

Good thinking, I should've thought of those ;-) Anyways, I guess we can list this particular show as "Jim James solo @ the Jagjaguwar Showcase a.k.a. Secretly Canadian Barbecue during the Bloomington Fest at Space 101, Bloomington, IN, September 1, 2001" ... or something like that ...

Oh well, as for other 2001 shows, indeed I wish more from that particular year were available ... Anyhow, I have at least two more almost ready to go, and maybe a third one to follow. Just stay tuned.

And here's one more. It's one that I have never seen on any other list so far. As I have written in the 'liner notes' this was the last MMJ recording I got on 'old-fashioned' analog tape more than 5 years ago, and it has been on that tape until early this year. With this project it finally got it's CD-R 'release'!

This recording concludes the year 2001. Between the previous volume, I 'only' had two recordings that have already been made available at the Live Music Archive:

10/25 Mercury Lounge, Austin, TX
12/21 WFPK "X-Mas Session", Louisville, KY (broadcast 12/25)

My versions are the same or not notably different (for example, the 10/25 recording I have is from the same source and only has some extra minutes of pre-show sounds/noise).

OK, let's move on to the year 2002, of which only three shows have made it to the Live Music Archive so far (and one of them wasn't even in my archive!). For this moment I will probably add approximately 40 extra dates!! Around 10 or so of them will be March dates, mostly Low Dog's recordings! More information will as usual be given with each volume.

Anyways, for now, here's the 20th volume of the MMMJLRA!

And thanks for the headliner's show!  I was at that show and was not aware that it was recorded. So few of the great headliner's shows got taped, i'm glad that i get to relive this one!

Hey Ger, I have finally got some time to start soaking in some of these early 2000 shows and wow, how great.   I just can't thank you enough.   The radios sessions and intimate shows just sound so great.

Anyway, I was thinking about some of the missing covers that could possibly be floating around out there.  In particular "The End" by the Doors and Welch's "My Morphine" seem to have been played around the time as the following shows in Belgium.  In fact, The End is labeled as being from 12-15-00 at the 4AD which I guess would be the "late show"" considering you have the Belgique listed as the "early show".  Any chance of either of these tracks still showing up?  (Sorry, I'm getting greedy.)

I just recently got to give this one a good listen and may I say thank you again.  The quality on this one is great.  The version of at dawn at this show is the one I've describe before that was completely acoustic and the sold out hall was quite as Jim's unamplified voice filled the hall.  Which reminds me, I think this was the first show they sold outat Headliner's.  Also, Jim says, "Go ahead and give me a buttload of reverb on this one", which was my tagline here on the forum for a long time.  I thought it was before the Bear but it was by my car, a great rarity from the guetig era.

I'm glad to see that you're getting this one out there, Ger.  Thanks for all of your help and to all of my other Jacket fanatic friends here!   The main thing I remember about this one was that they came out wearing SUITS!!  They were kind of light brown leisure suits, I think.   I don't have any pictures, unfortunately :(
They rocked pretty hard.   I was there with my cousin and her husband (who live in Nashville).   They're more into bluegrass but they liked MMJ a little bit!   At the beginning of the show I was kind of in the back by the tables, and there was a lot of talking going on (I think that my cousin-in-law commented in there about how ridiculous it was to try to carry on a conversation in there - it was just so loud!   There weren't a lot of MMJ fanatics there, a few were up front, though.   I apologize now for the "hootin' and hollerin'", as Jim called it, on there.  It's a decent recording, though, and I am tremendously proud (yet surprised!) that they used my recording of Lil Billy from this night on the Demos Package recently.   Those really were fun days.  It was a pleasure to be absolutely Blown Away by a band like that and ultimately being able to sort of get to know them a little bit, at least in a 'hi, how ya doin'?' way on the road when I'd see 'em.  They were a great bunch of dudes, or they did a good job of putting up with me!   As I used to tell 'em "still no punches thrown, no restraining orders issued!" (but I think it was Danny who once signed a poster something like "thanks, Low Dog, for years of support/stalking!"
Ger, I don't know if you're just doing MMJ shows, but I Highly recommend the Jim James solo show from the night before if it's out there somewhere available for downloading.  It was a Masterpiece of infinite beauty.   I had out-of-body experiences that night and the only thing I was on was beer and solo Jim!    Have fun and thanks again, everybody!

Hi all, it has been awhile due to celebrating my holidays somewhere away from the computer and the archive ;-)

So now some catching up on reading the forum ... First above question ...

I'm sorry, but I do not have recordings of listed covers. At some point or another they were reported being played and I listed them on my list of covers I maintained back in the day, and which was used to draw the list here on the forum. It took awhile, but in the end I contributed all missing recordings of covers I had. The shows these came from will all be part of the archive ...

Anyways, I'm glad you like most of the volumes so far. Just stay tuned for a lot more to come ...

Thanks for posting your memories Low Dog! I still have all your (long) journals from your MMJ-tours from back then!

As for the solo show from the night before, I have not posted that, because it was and is already available at the Live Music Archive. Else I certainly would have included it ithis project, because I do not limit this to band shows only!

Thanks so much again, Ger!  I was jonesin' for another volume!  This so fun "reliving" the old days and collecting new shows.

Can I just skip forward a bit and ask if you have 2-28-02 from Headliners?  The anticipation may kill me.  That was the show that they let me and some other friends/fans sit on stage.  I sat right behind Jim.  Please tell me you have that show!

No, sorry. From the years up to and including 2004 I have the following Headliners shows: December 21, 2001, September 26, 2003, and September 27, 2003. Since I uploaded the first one recently, all of these are currently available at the LMA.

Other upcoming Louisville shows are: April 30, 2002 @ Jillian's (Jim solo opening for John Mayer), May 9, 2003 @ WFPK Radio for KCRW's "Morning Becomes Eclectic", and a short (approx. 10 mins.) "Etown broadcast" recording from The Palace Theater the same day.

I also have a recording from the Live Lunch performance on December 20, 2002, but that is from a webcast, so I'm not sure yet if I will put it up on the LMA.

same here. those were the days.

thanks for the heads up on what's coming up.  I remember that WFPK/KRCW broadcast and e-town performance vividly.  they should have both been amazing but technical diffifculties screwed up both performaces.  WFPK's monitors went out, i think, delaying the performance and making us look like bumpkins on the LA show.  Then, when he finally started playing the national broadcast system decided to test their emergency weather system.  so folks in louisville only ended up hearing the first half of the first song and the last half of the last song.  then, they had sound difficulties at e-town which duly sucked beacuse it was also their very first performance at the palace (which jim had said he dreamed of playing someday). the performance is uninspired and Jim appearantly left the stage in a huff after the show because of all the problems with the sound.

anyway.  I'm definitely looking forward to the jillian's solo show and the rest of the archive.  thanks again

Thanks, Ger, and to all of the tapers and traders.   It's kind of fun to relive my childhood here on the board!   Actually, I was less than two months short of 40 at the time of this recording.   The main thing I remember about this night was that it SNOWED in Dallas that night - a lot for Dallas, too - I think we had four to five inches of snow on the ground by February 6!   And five and a half years later, I still don't think we've equaled that amount since 2/5/02.     I remember getting there early, as they were openers.   Trees was a fairly lousy dump.  The stage was okay, it was pretty big and about 3-4 feet high.  I'd been 'Busted' by yet another overzealous 'security guard' here on April 27, '99 (Old 97's show).   Trees was an anti-taping establishment, for sure.   No matter what the bands said, they had a hard-on for telling their clientele that we were lower than a snake's belly if they were so inclined!
Anyway, I went upstairs before the show and I got my gear out  - from a geeky historical standpoint, this was the first MMJ show I ever taped with these new microphones (Sonics Studios, binaurals, D-6-S, I think).   Prior to that I had a standard Sony mike that I had to hold or put up on a stand.  These new ones slipped onto the rims of my glasses (and they still do but much less frequently).   I had these long cords coming out of my jacket and pants' pockets, and a patron of the bar asked me about my mikes after I set them up in the balcony.   He said something like "what are those?" and I was paranoid about getting busted again at Trees and I said something like "they're headphones" and he didn't buy it and he said "let me listen" - I laughed him off, and moved away!
I moved downstairs and the show started fairly soon after that.   In fact, I think that this is the show that began as I was still in the back trying to get my equipment squared away.    This was the second show I'd taped using these.   I had taped Hank III the night before in Houston.   I remember sitting in my car prior to the Shelton H3 show listening (on cassette) to the solo Jim show from Jan. 23.  It was less than two weeks old and I was still completely blown away by it (actually, I still am!).   Anyway, the show started and Jim has some faux-British accent going on as they go into The Dark (I think, I haven't listened lately).   Forgive me if I'm wrong about his accent or the song!
Mainly, they played the same stuff from the Oct 25 show I'd seen in Austin.
War Begun, Picture of You, Just Because I Do, Lowdown, One Big Holiday, stuff like that.    Oh yeh!   I almost forgot - prior to setting up my mikes earlier upstairs, I'd drifted back to the upstairs hangout for the bands.   There was a loft that the bands used that was upstairs.   Tommy was sitting there rolling up a cigarette.    He was the only one there, but I recognized him as a 'Nice Jacket' and I said, I believe, "Are you Johnny?"   He was nice about it, I talked to him for a minute and left him alone.  I didn't see any of the other nice Jackets that night.   Yeh, I'm a freak, but still no punches thrown, no restraining orders issued!"
My friend Cheryl (who later shot hundreds of Great photos of this band and many others, once available at yellowchevyluv.net, not sure of it's availibility now) showed up mid-show, I think (unfortunately) I can be heard on this recording talking to her, ugh!    Keep in mind, though, this was the first time the mikes had been so close to my mouth....still, as a taper, it's unforgiveable!
Other notes that possibly exist during this show, going on memory - after War Begun, I think, or possibly Picture of You, Jim greets the audience in his usual (for those days) way, "We are My Morning Jacket....all the way from Louisville, Kentucky" (and of course he'd draw it out like"Lou-uh-vull" - it's hard for me to hear talking heads call it "Louie-ville"& I'm not even a native - just going on my son's usual pronunciation - I've become used to the Lou-uh-vull way!)
And right after Jim says that, this dude in the balcony shouts out  "And You Rock!" - I know that the band was happy to hear that as there were scarcely  50 people in there for MMJ.   The other thing that happened on this night is that Jim comes up to the mike between songs again and calls the band "My Morning Crack Hit" (again, just going on memory, sorry if this is wrong and I should try to find this and listen to it before posting!).   I think that's one of only two or three times I recorded them and he referred to them as MM Crack Hit, which is comic genius in itself.
Well, I am praying that my 1997 computer's browser allows this message to actually go out!   Thanks for reading if you made it through this.   To paraphrase my friend Sitter, "MMJ rUUUUUUUUUUUUUUles!!!" - long live MMJ and the tapers and traders.

Well, it has been almost two weeks since I uploaded volume 24 of my archive project. Meanwhile I have been working on two new volumes (both from 2002), but I have decided not to post them! Why? I tell ya...

These two recordings are from March 13 and the second show from March 14. Both are soundboard recordings. When I started working on these two, I already had doubts on making them available on the LMA. Although the band allows recordings added there, their policy notes (http://www.archive.org/details/MyMorningJacket) mention this: "Don't like the board sound but are cool with aud taping, so bring your mics." Anyhow, it's not 'stricly forbidden' or anything to add soundboard recordings I think. However, when listening to the March 13 recording I (again) understand what they mean. The mix isn't balanced, the vocals sound distant for example, and there's some sort of speaker buzz present throughout the recording. It is very listenable, but there are audience recordings of other shows, which are way way better, and really represent how the band sounds/sounded live.
The March 14 (second show) is another story. Again a soundboard, and again some problems. There's some distortion on the vocals, because the mic was recorded too loud, and there are gaps/cuts throughout the recording. I was able to edit those gaps out, and although they are still audible, it is not as annoying as a short piece of silence in the middle of a song. Besides that there are also quite some jumps, probably caused by bad ripping, or previously 'corrected' gaps, and quite a few pops and clicks. Although this is a very good recording soundwise, all and all it has too many flaws ...
Sorry for this, and I will see/think about if I will make them available otherwise, but as far as the project and the LMA goes, it's a no go.

I will move on to the next date in my archive, which is March 15, 2002, and it's another Low Dog recording ... Stay tuned.

And it will absolutely make up for the two soundboard recordings!

Sounds great Ger, also sounds like you made the right decision on the SBD recordings. Keeping them in not so easily accessible circulation is probably a good idea.

Thanks buddy!

"Chills down my spine" - just kidding, I haven't heard it, but I *am* listening to Chills now (what a song!)    I have heard *about* it, and my memory seems to recall that this was a fantastic show but that it was flawed, or certain copies were flawed.   Was there more than one "Planetarium" show out there?    Maybe there were two tapers and one of them had a problem, like a skip or a popping sound?   Maybe a copy got distributed that wasn't very clear.   Anyway, it's a broken record here, but I "still....feeling that I'm getting ill" because I can't download anything.  Hell, I can't download a comma!  (whatever, sorry for the ridiculosity!)   Anyway, are there any of you out there with time to burn it to disc and trade with me?    I figure Dylan/Kory/Dave/Riny/Ger and whomever I forgot are sick of burning stuff for me; consider this an attempt to spread the grief and angst along to some others!   (I'd use a smiley face but my browser won't allow! - trivia:  I bought this computer exactly 10 years ago today!   My mouse still works but doesn't have a rolling bar!    I'm old and in the way....."and loving it!" (Maxwell Smart, '67)    Nuff sed, 'cept bring on another brew, it's probably time for another one.   Long live MMJ and the tapers and traders.

there definitely were NOT two tapers at the show.  There may have been shitty copies of from the same source but this IS the planetarium.  For the past five years or so there have been 2 mp3s, one for the first set and the other for the second.  This is from the original burn discs, spliced and leveled by our very own datadawg, Kory.

I'll trade ya for the Bonarroo video, George!

My first thought is not to give it a number in the MMMJLRA project, simply because it didn't come from my collection. If it is going to numbered within the project, it could be labeled as the Magnix My Morning Jacket Live Recordings Archive Supplementary Volume 1 (MMMJLRAsupp01) ... If there are going to be any new shows from the period already finished, I was planning on something like that as well ... So, please give me your thoughts ...

Well, just leave it in the list, but simply delete the MMMJLRA references ... You could even expand the list with everything else available on the LMA as soon as I skip a date when it is already available there ... What about that?

The Magnix My Morning Jacket Live Recordings Archive Volume 31 (MMMJLRA31)

My Morning Jacket
Gate City Noise, Greensboro, NC
March 24, 2002

The last of Low Dog's recordings from his March 2002 "tour" with the band!

http://www.archive.org/details/mmj2002-03-24.aud.flac16

So far only the FLAC files are available. I guess all other formats will follow soon. However, as noted the LMA is having some troubles lately, and being slow in processing stuff is one of those troubles.

By the way, although it had been awhile since I posted another volume in the MMMJLRA project, I have been very busy in making stuff available online as well as backing up old tapes. Those of you who also have an account over at Dime will probably know what I mean (else look for me there). Anyhow, with around 30 uploaded torrents in three months time there, you all know what I mean. I think ;-)

Although the Live Music Archive is still having trouble, I managed to get another volume of my archive project up there!

The Magnix My Morning Jacket Live Recordings Archive Volume 32 (MMMJLRA32)

My Morning Jacket
Mercury Lounge, New York, NY
March 29, 2002

http://www.archive.org/details/mmj2002-03-29.aud.flac16

Like before, all file formats are being processed as we speak... Enjoy!
**edit: they should've been processed by now (about three hours after finishing the new entry), but haven't, one of the things not working properly right now at the LMA. I don't know what's going on over there, but for a couple weeks already, it's not as it used to be ...**
**edit2: don't download this one yet! I got a message that the md5 check failed. This is probably because the upload kept on cuttin' off, and I had to resume a couple of the files ...** update on edit2: only track 9 is incomplete, it's being uploaded right now, so it should only a matter of minutes to get things completed ... Just wait for all formats being derived. That's a good indication that all is processed correctly.

Coming up are two more NY shows, March 31 @ the Northsix in Brooklyn and the 'acoustic encore night' at the Mercury Lounge on April 1st. Stay tuned.

Thanks man, it's good someone takes the time and effort to create something like that! Certainly since I do not have that time anymore ;-)

By the way, for those on Dime may have noticed already that a recording of the Jim James solo performance in Amsterdam on December 13, 2000 (where I was myself) has been made and will hopefully be seeded on Dime or come my way in due time. The same taper also recorded the following Dutch shows:
- April 3, 013, Tilburg
- April 6, Nighttown, Rotterdam
- April 8, Paradiso, Amsterdam
- April 14, Burgerweeshuis, Deventer

So far only a FM recording of the April 8 show (another one I attended) was available ... Great news I would say. Check the thread that made this surface here: http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=182169 and stay tuned for things to happen. For those not on Dime, that particular torrent is a recording of the Kurt Wagner opening set on December 13, 2000!

Couldn't agree more. I think I have mentioned this before, but I would love to see my work continued. Parts of that, like the setlists and the complete songlist plus where they were released, have been sort of continued here on the forum, but it would be even better it got all compiled together on a website, all illustrated if possible. It certainly doesn't have to be in 'my' format, but I am more than willing to provide the webspace. All I actually need is a group of dedicated people who can provide the information and webpages to put online. I can't give you access to my webspace, but if one of those group of people has some information and updates a certain page/part of the website offline, and gets the files to me by email or so, I will have it uploaded pretty soon. I'm still online a lot, but I do not have the time anymore to search, check all possible sources all the time, put the bits and pieces together, and update the site.

The Magnix My Morning Jacket Live Recordings Archive Volume 36 (MMMJLRA36)

Jim James solo
Tennessee Theatre, Knoxville, TN
May 1, 2002

http://www.archive.org/details/mmj2002-05-01.aud.flac16

Enjoy!

Oh shit!  I just realized this is the solo set with Isobella and Chills!  TWO GEMS!  Plus that is the first time Strangulation appears on the archive as a Jim solo version.

You rule Ger!

Edit:  Not to mention Knoxville to KY!  Brian, you must be pleased. :)

As mentioned yesterday, the Jim James solo performance at the Amsterdam Paradiso on December 13, 2000 has surfaced after all these years. It can be downloaded from Dime: http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=182334

Be sure that I will put it up at the LMA later this week.

edit: At the request of the taper, I will wait uploading it to the LMA for approx. two weeks.

Quoteput me on the list.  I still think we should pull our resources and come up with a kick ass fan site.  That would be a great addition.

I'd like to see this organized.  I already have an okay to make the covers comp into a website with downloadable links (that would be a lot of space, but really cool).  It would be cool to really "do it up", illustrated and whatnot.  I would also like to see your work continued, Ger.  I love your site and wish it didn't end with 2004.  PM me and let me know what I'd need to do to take on this project.  if anyone one else may be willing to help out, where possible, pm me or respond in this thread.

oh, and by the way, Ger, thank you thank thank you for the new shows  :)

I ended up buying those tickets before I realized that this was a solo Jim show - lots of crazy stuff happened on that tour, including standing on the outside of a massive audience in Louisville and receiving a tap on my shoulder - turned around after the second tap to a smiling Jim James!   He said something like "they love their John Mayer, don't they?" - of course there were several there for him.  And on this date, May 1, we ended up seeing he and his girlfriend on the sidewalk outside and *from the car* I made some requests!   "How about 'Isobella' or 'Chills', you know, something unusual!?!?" and he said something like "We'll see" and "I've been playing some of the old stuff for ya, Low Dog!" - and then while waiting in line at the front of the Tennessee Theatre these gals were gushing about Mayer saying "Isn't he sooo cute?" and I said loud enough for them to hear "Yes, my son Jim James IS pretty good-looking!" - we were kinda buzzed.   There is a bunch of irritating talking - this dumbass sat right down beside me and started talking about getting his driver's license renewed, etc.  I wanted to tell him to shut up, but I didn't.  Jim was barefoot, of course.   I still can't believe that this is the only time he's played Isobella, and I was flabbergasted to hear Chills live - I never thought he'd do it, I was just being stupid when I requested it!    :)   Those were the days - thanks for the memories, Jim!

I fell behind for about 7 shows... The main page has been updated.
Thanks for the shows Ger! I'm readying May 4th 2002 for a DVD release that I was only able to transfer thanks to Dylan's DV player. I don't know see an audio release for the show but we'll at least have the video. I could pull the audio from the DV tape if necessary...

I hate to be impatient, but is there any chance of uploading this show to LMA soon?  I'm dying to hear it.  I downloaded it off DIME but couldn't decrypt the tracks.

Hello! One of, if not THE, very best MMJ shows I have attended. If anyone has any part or all of this show, please feel free to share. Thanks in advance!  I've been looking for this show since, well, October 15, 2010!

PS thanks for thinking of me, easy way!  I guess I've made my feelings memorably known...

this isn't the show where Patrick got sick. This is the following trip to Portland. JJ mentions it during the show. This was the 1st show at the newly re-opened State Theater. I just popped in set 1, sounds killer! my source, dpa4023>v3>ad2k from front row mezz has a couple glitches in the first 20 min, I have my friends ak40 source as well, he and I were the only tapers. Also have a Carl show from last spring from Boston that I will try and get out there.

OK, I've given my copy a good listen from start to Steam Engine and there are 2 small glitches from a cable issue. both are only a sec or 2.

track 4. way he sings
track 10. Mahgeetah

thankfully they were both early on cause this show gets better by the song. This Steam Engine is so f'ing good.
