In case you aren't on much social media, it seems pretty apparent that Jim is teasing a new solo album on all of his accounts. I am DIGGING this little 11-second sneak peek, can't wait for the announcement and the single!!!

Soooooo exciting!!!!!

I think announcement, the single, and tour dates will be released soon.  I have no inside info, but with all of JJ's recent tweeted images and what he has said in the past (solo album done), that great news is brewing for this week.

I too am digging this brief guitar bit.  I liked Regions and EE but am hoping this one is a real guitar based rocker.

Record store day release?

Everything about these hints are screaming an 80's influence for what I assume is his new solo record.
From the guitar riff, and the black and white smoky room teases it just reminds me of an 80s music video.

hoping for guitar catharsis. Love some of Jim's solo stuff, Of The Mother Again is an unprecedented magical piece of music.

Eternally Even?? I'll admit it, I haven't even listened to it other than Here In Spirit and that's on me.

But a new solo album THIS Soon??

I'm sorry but I'm just too much of a Jacket freak and want the live LP and Waterfall trax. I can be patient, though. Anything Jimbo creates is magic. I've started thinking and treating all of the projects as Jacket stuff, considering any of it could be played by the band and has. They've transformed a lot more solo items into Jacket vehicles than I thought:

Nothing To It
Down On The Bottom
State of The Art
A New Life
Carried Away
Losin Yo Head

and the one I really wanna see done: Carl's 4th of July!!!

Theyve done The Right Place and Quick Like a Flash too! And I'm not huge on Eternally Even but it's a solid listen. Hoping for more guitar rock on this one.

^Good take here. Definitely a good, enjoyable album, but every other Jim/MMJ album has stayed in my listening rotation pretty much since I discovered them but Eternally Even disappeared after a few months. Still good, but doesn't have the same type of longevity/staying power if that makes sense.
And while I do kind of wish the guitar rock stayed was centered on full band stuff with Carl and Patrick in there to really bash it out, I think getting a bigtime guitar album from Jim would still be tons of fun. I imagine it'd be a lot more pop rock-y than most MMJ stuff, fitting in with the Anytime type of sound maybe?? also maybe if its more guitar centered, Throwback would appear on this album instead of a Jacket one?

True Nature and The World Is Smiling Now are the only songs I still consistently listen to - agreed that the rest of Eternally Even hasn't really "stuck".

I loved Tribute To 2. Wild Honey might be my favourite thing Jim James has done on any solo album to date.

I can get into some more guitar though. He's covered his slow, dreamy bases with ROLASOG, EE, and TT2, so I'm more than okay with him turning up the amp.

edit-I say that but I've incorrectly guessed the date for OBH downloads twice so im probably wrong

Great news but not really feeling Just a Fool on first listen, hopefully it grows on me.

I will say, unlike the feedback i'm seeing here, I loved both of Jims previous solo LP's. I played Eternally Even to death back when it came out, likewise of ROLAS..

Pretty excited for this release to say the least.

Awesome news.  Ordered.  Even though I'll listen on Spotify a thousand times more often, I like supporting JJ or ATO in this tiny way.

Great read above about JJ's passion and getting the green light regarding permission to use the photo.

Very interesting that Throwback is on the list.  I so hope to hear that live again...... please summer tour!!

Jim posted this a few hours ago on Instagram.

"removador - hello duane- your piece "the illuminated man" was used in "the last whole earth catalogue" in 1971. i wasnt even born yet. i was born in 1978...but i found my copy of "the last whole earth catalogue" about 6 months ago in a thrift store and it blew my mind. i have been feeling increasingly overwhelmed by the speed of technology and its place in our lives and here was this beautiful book/catalogue from the past showing me me all these beautiful things and amazing images to help one learn different ways to look at the world... or "get off the grid?" funny they had no idea back then just how crazy "the grid" would get. or did they? so i am trying to put down my phone... use the computer and social media less... and just focus on real life and the people i love and my art. of course i am not fully "off the grid" because i am sending you this email in hopes of you changing your mind about letting me use your image as it appeared in "the last whole earth catalogue" in 1971 because when i saw it on the page there it spoke to me so deeply of how my head feels like it is exploding with the amount of information we are forced to consume on a daily basis and how that information is so DISTORTED there is almost no longer any tangible truth. the name of my new record is "UNIFORM DISTORTION" because i feel like there is this blanket distortion on society/media and the way we gather our "news" and important information...and more and more of us are feeling lost and looking for new ways out of this distortion and back to the truth...and finding hope in places like the desert where i write this email to you now...finding hope in the land and in the water and in old books offering new ideas and most importantly in each other and love. i feel like there was a reason i found "the last whole earth catalogue" and there was a reason your art spoke to me... and i really think it would speak to others who would see it exploding out at them illuminating from the record store shelf or the glow of their phone or computer screen and feel its organic mind blowing distortion connect with this new music.
i hope you are well and thanks for listening-
jim james"

Happy to see 'Throwback' finally find a home, but a bit disappointed it's not on an MMJ album. Hope the studio version lives up to those smokin' band takes and also praying it stays in the MMJ canon once the guys start touring again!

You can listen to previews of the entire album on iTunes. I contemplated waiting until the release to listen to it but that idea sank within 10 seconds. I'm impressed, it's all very upbeat and sunny. The production is honestly flawless, a real raw band sound. I'm gonna be playing this record a lot this summer! "Out of Time" especially sounds very big, that riff!!!! Throwback literally sounds exactly like the live version, especially Jims vocals.

(I'd also like to add my list of names to those who loved Eternally Even, In The Moment is my fave Jim song by a long shot. So smooth and sexy!!)

tbh, i was happy that Jim's albums were so different from Jacket because I felt it allowed him another avenue to be creative that didn't quite overlap with Jacket. Now, with this album apparently being more "guitar driven", it gives me a little bit of worry (not a lot) about the future of the band. More so than them playing all the albums at OBH4.

I know the band will get back together at some point but this does make me think the break could be longer than many of us have hoped. Don't bust out the pitchforks, just sharing my thoughts.

Waterloo has a few copies still. I just snagged one today.

On a quick listen Yaki Soba is a fun fuzzed out pop rock song with catchy riff.

Where Just A Fool feels more anthemic, this tune is much more laid back.

Not going to be a popular opinion but this album is 0-2 for me right now. Not a fan of just a fool, I thought it might grow on me but after 10 or so listens I think it's safe to say i'm not a fan.. and i've never liked Throwback, possibly the song I dislike the most in MMJ's entire catalogue. I was hoping the album gave it a different spin, but it didn't.

Still have hope, Same Old Lie was my least favorite song on his last album and i loved everything else on it.

As I am driving, I got to thinking.
With the inclusion of Throwback ...
What are the possibilities?
That this album.... is and was supposed to be, "The Waterfall: B Sides/Part 2"???🤔

To me, both singles so far sound like demos.  Like they aren't done yet.  The vocal effect on Throwback is just not good.  Just not digging the production of the songs so far I guess.

I'm really digging this super-overdriven production! The reverb on the vocals takes me right back to ISM-era Jim. Ultimately it wouldn't work if the songs weren't there, but I think "Just A Fool" and especially "Throwback" show that Jim has still got the goods as a writer of supreme riff rockers.

This is the most excited I've ever been for a Jim solo album. Like everyone, kinda wish this was just a Jacket album, but as long as "Throwback" works its way back into MMJ sets, I ain't complainin'.

I have to say I'm on board with both oistheone and Clarkwork.....  I'm very excited for the album and am a fan of the riffs.  But I must admit that I also prefer the unaltered singing voice.  The muffled or fuzz or whatever production effect on the vocals is not my cup of tea either.   I hope that full effect isn't present during the live shows (which I CAN NOT wait for).  The rest of the album could have the scorching rock we've heard mentioned in earlier Jim interviews and from others who were at the Rough Trade show.

Throwback has really grown on me since we first heard it a while back, like others said at first I thought it was just a Waterfall reject but it has really become its own thing. Constantly stuck in my head!

Love Throwback when Jacket did It. The recorded version is just awful. Keep trying to give it a shot but just hurts me due to falling in love with the live Jacket version.

It's a catchy song but it could be way better.

I seriously wonder why Jim has fallen so in love with the reverb and muffling his voice. If he had recorded this song in a grain silo like he did for At Dawn, it would've taken this song to another level.

I really like Jim's vocal approach!  It was perfect for Eternally Even. Very cool and sultry for.lack of better terms. We'll see how well it fits with the new album.

I'm in the camp of never having cared for the full-band Throwback, but this version makes a lot of sense to me. It's a song that's better off for being loose, low-key, and pointed rather than being given the flashy "Among the Living" treatment. You wouldn't get that awesome little laugh at the end on a Jacket album these days.

Maybe in some ways, the full-band albums have become too much of an institution? They're still fantastic albums full of epic rock songs, but Jim has a lot more to say these days and MMJ albums have a lot more expectations riding on them. Just a stray thought, considering I've been listening to a considerable amount of Jim solo albums as of late.

I personally hope the next MMJ record follows suit and is more loose/laid back sounding in its production. I really do love The Waterfall but a few songs (Compound Fracture, Spring & Only Memories especially) sound overbaked and totally rigid, almost robotic compared to the live versions. Only Memories is the worst offender to me, live it's so sexy and chilled but the studio version sounds really uptight and stiff. It's a strange one because there are also songs like In Its Infancy and Tropics that couldn't have been done better!

While we are talking Jim quotes ("scorching rock"), remember that Jim has said on numerous occasions that his approach with his solo records is to make you feel like you got the wrong record by mistake when you first listen to it.  He seems to want to go off path and make it sound a little screwed up.

Whether you like this or not is one thing but we shouldnt be surprised anymore is all im saying.  The guy is an odd ball, which i love, but i think a lot of people are still clinging to the very straight forward, black and white Americana version of Jim that we got on the first three MMJ albums..which is roughly 4 years of Jim's work compared to the 17 years of evidence since then that paints a very different picture of who he really is and the type of music that he wants to make.

That said, i would still die if he ever did a straight solo acoustic tour one day and just decided to play early Jacket songs like Hopefully and If All Else Fails.

When Jim chuckles giddily at the the end of Throwback, that's kind of the way I felt ... it's so good it makes you want to laugh. Really looking forward to this record based on the first two early-release tracks.

Some good points Stevie.  Jim is always evolving and never stagnant.

This album is called Uniform Distortion so I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of songs have the distortion/fuzz on the vocals like Throwback. The jam in the middle of the song is great.  A show with fuzz and distortion like the album plus a chunk of solo acoustic like Hopefully/All Else Fails mixed in would be ideal!  I like the pure, unadulterated Jim voice.

Today I was incredibly lucky and got a sneak peek of the album at work.

SPOILERS BELOW!!!

Start-to-finish, this is the most rock-and-roll album Jim's ever recorded. Not a single acoustic number to be found. Almost every single track sounds like it had the output cranked to 12. "Uniform Distortion" is right! It's certainly a cohesive sound -- layered, punchy productions with a very earnest vibe.  "Throwback" ain't the only tune containing lyrics delivered with laughter. Even with the overdriven fidelity and casual vibe, the music does not suffer in the least. This is Jim's strongest set of songs in years. This is as good as MMJ, and I cannot wait until the boys can dig into these tunes.

Highlights for me:

"Throwback" -- obviously. I'll never stop loving this song.

"Yes To Everything" has one of the best solos Jim has ever ripped. The last two minutes are pure, rip-roaring rock and roll, with an extremely Heartbreakers-esque rave-up finale. Jim's scream has never sounded better -- he belts the FUCK outta this one! It would be a crime against humanity if this didn't work its way into MMJ sets!

"No Secrets" might be the best song on the album. Hypnotic melody and fantastic, evocative lyrics set atop a beautiful little repeating guitar lick. This song BUILDS. Definitely the most personal song on the album. You know there's some real emotions behind this one.

"You Get To Rome" -- What a stomper! Sounds like Jim James was hanging with Billy Gibbons and rolled a joint on the cover of Tres Hombres before recording.

"No Use Waiting" - heavy, "Master Plan"-esque riff. Marvelous and monstrous, like the slower, more well-behaved cousin of "Highly Suspicious". Another number that Carl would absolutely SLAY!

"All In Your Head" --- here's where the Powderfinger comparisons are coming from! I think I've typed "riff" too much, but this song's got a killer one.

"Too Good To Be True" -- The most mellow track on the album. Quotes "Friends Again" in a more melancholy, reflective way. Jim rips a beautiful solo -- MAJOR shades of Jerry -- to end the album.

Shit, "Over and Over" and "Out Of Time" are great too! When "Just A Fool" might be the weakest track on the album, you know you've got a winner. MMJ fans are going to be thrilled.

This album kicks ass. And I CANNOT WAIT TO HEAR THESE NEW TUNES LIVE!!

this is all extremely well said and echoes a lot of the same sentiments i had listening to this. i think i listened to the album 9 times yesterday. no secrets is my early favorite but that'll probably change at some point today when i find something else to latch on to.

this is probably jim's best effort since Z. it should really appeal to the folks who have been around awhile and haven't been digging what jim's been putting out.

I have not heard the b-side Yaki Soba, but I would definitely love to if you are feeling generous.....

I am getting the feeling that for whatever reason the whole band didn't want to get back together for The Waterfall Part 2 and that some of that material ended up becoming this album.  I could be wrong.  It has happened before.

In all honesty, it doesn't sound close at all. Still needs to be mixed and packaged and it seems like Jim has a million other priorities right now.

The live album on the other hand... I am hopeful.

I'll admit I've had a chance to listen to the album for a week now. It is fantastic, a gift to Jacket fans. I can't wait to hear what you think, once it drops on Friday.

100% agreed

I definitely caved and checked out the short preview clips MOWJO8185 tipped us off about.  I can't say that I am 100% sold on the muddy sounding production just yet, but these songs themselves sound absolutely incredible.  I cannot wait to hear the good quality full songs.

Looking forward to hearing the whole thing, but I do wish he kept fleshing out the art pop/psych pop sound. I liked that his first 2 records weren't just MMJ lite.

Mine was originally scheduled to arrive on Thursday. This morning, I checked, and it's supposed to arrive on Wednesday (tomorrow). However, I noticed it had arrived at my local post office already, so I called them up to see if I could stop by to pick it up. They said to give them until 3:30 to sort packages, and then I could stop by to pick it up (less than a mile from my house).

Mines scheduled to arrive Tuesday July 3rd. So disappointing. For whatever reason, received tracking info that label was created on 6/21, but was not actually shipped until this morning. I think I'm done buying new releases from anywhere other than my local RS, they will certainly have it available on Friday.

i slowed buying presales with summer release dates b/c I kept getting warped records. If I buy from my local, it's much less likely to be warped and I have a quicker avenue for replacement

The download link I received this morning for the album came from "ATO Records Store". The link isn't working for me and I'm trying to get that sorted.

The shipping confirmation email came from ATO Records Orders.

The fulfillment is through Music Today.

For sure, and I didn't mean for it to come off as a knock on the album. I enjoyed it quite a bit. But I think my enjoyment, at least initially, is coming from my affection for the way I've seen/heard Jim play the guitar live being all over this album, rather than it being an example of Jim's songwriting being at the top of its game.

I was puzzled by Eternally Even when it came out but after settling into the repeating riffs and heavy keyboards it became a favorite.  Not expecting a similar sound for this album.

all week the usps tracking said my shipment would arrive Monday.

I'm not thrilled with the album's production, but if I can learn to love two of the worst-sounding classics, "tommy" and "all things must pass," I can deal with anything.

After hearing the album and digging how guitar oriented it is, I'm a little disappointed Jim is choosing to do a solo acoustic tour instead of bringing along a full band. I feel like a lot of the tracks won't translate well to acoustic guitar...

What do you guys think?

It is career spanning, so I could see it being fairly light (handful) on the new songs.

"I am looking forward to exploring all sorts of songs stripped down as they first occurred in their natural habitat, just voice and guitar"

I'm picturing what Vedder did when he went on tour after Into the Wild. Or Cornell's solo act.

I think that sounds like a cool idea.

I'm looking forward to hearing a lot of Jacket tracks in their early stages. On the other hand, I think the new Jim record is just so heavy and part of me would rather see those songs live with a band.

I caught Jim solo last November in Louisville and while it was neat hearing stripped down versions of Throwback, State of the Art, and I'm Amazed, I found myself wishing it was a full band experience.

I'm thinking maybe we'll see some of these new solo tracks in future My Morning Jacket shows?

Ok just got through a few listens and damn his album has some fun guitar elements to it.

"Out of time" is so damn enjoyable, I need to hear this live with a full band.
"No Secrets" is top notch and yeah the Fleetwood Mac comparison is undeniable which I'm completely cool with.
I'm digging "Yes to Everything" especially his guitar work at the end, "No Use Waiting" needs to be played out on the road with MMJ please!
And "Too Good to Be True" is gorgeous and really brings a nice close to the album. Definitely my favorite of all of Jim's solo albums. I am a little bummed his upcoming tour is only acoustic after hearing this album, but damn the thoughts of some acoustic rarities is cool. I'm sure we will hear some of this album with MMJ in the future.

Gave it my first listen on the way to work, and hate to be critical on such an exciting day, but i'm just not a fan. The distorted vocals are not for me, sounds like he is singing in the shower, and while the album shreds it just comes across as sloppy guitar playing. I kind of get a garage band had a $1000 to spend to cut a record at their local studio kind of vibe with it.
It actually got to a point where I was just waiting for it to end so i could throw on Circuital and get a familiar sound back through my head. I kept thinking throughout my listen that 'outta my system' would have fit well on this new album, and maybe if the songs were produced similarly to outta my system I would have dug it more.. but I don't think that's what Jim was going for.
All that said i plan on listening to it over and over again and i'm sure it'll grow on me, but off the bat it just doesn't do it.. but i guess i've never really been a fan of basic 2-3 minute rock songs in general from any artist. The album kind of screams The Clash to me which is certainly not for me.
Of the three solo releases this is dead last, but I REALLY enjoyed Eternally Even and Regions of light and sound.. they still make it on my frequent playlist so they are certainly tough shoes to fill.

Hopefully it grows on me, because I was really excited for this release.

I personally love the "Live" feel
I love that it is butt naked and not over produced
I love that it's not tight and meticulous
I love seeing Jim having fun and letting loose
You can tell he really missed his guitar, and its like a love letter to "Mahgeetah"

In my opinion Too Good To Be True is one of his most beautiful songs, and that guitar solo at the end, just when you think the song is over, is PERFECT!

Not only is this my favorite Jim record, I already put it above The Waterfall.

PS- I NEED to see Yes to Everthing live!!!

Jim does it again. I cherish Eternally Even -- I really feel it's the What's Going On of our times.

But this is a rocker through and through and exactly what I needed for the mayhem of 2018. The world's in an uproar but Jim just wants to laugh a bit and play some rock and roll like "when we were young.". All good by me.

you're not even being critical, you're just sharing your opinion while still leaving the door open for it to grow on you. It's funny, for all of the reasons you don't like it, it's endearing to me. And for the opposite reasons, I've only listened to his other proper solo albums like 5 times total. But, hey that's the reason they make chocolate and vanilla! I'm just happy our guy likes to sample a lot of flavors.

I love Regions and Eternally Even so will be tough to top.  Such good mood albums

I've just skimmed this so far and agree the vocals will be tough to warm up to.

Plan to give a couple full spins today

New Jacket days are certainly great days!

Count me amongst the fans.  I love it on first listen.  I love all of Jim's stuff.   I love all of the Jacket's stuff.   No doubt new release days are the best days.   Consider myself blessed to be along for the ride with Jim and Tom and Pat and Carl and Bo and everybody else.

Wow I love this album! Favorites - Out of Time, Yes to Everything, Over and Over, Too Good to Be True. The album finishes so strong.

I know most of it is pretty straight forward but does anyone have the lyrics?

Loving the new record! Great guitar work and the background chickletts are fuckin' awesome!

Unfortunately the production makes this a strong negative for me. I know that was done on purpose but I just don't think I can get use to a shitty sounding record.  :undecided:

Just swung by my local store to pick up a copy and they had 3 of the "Just A Fool"/"Yaki Soba" 7" still left. Went ahead and grabbed one of them for someone who wasn't able to get one. I know there's a few of y'all out there. Let me know and I'm happy to send it to you. And if anyone wants me to go get the other 2, I'm sure they'll still be there tomorrow. Can't wait to give the record a spin tonight!

I definitely don't hate the waterfall. Half of it just doesn't click with me. The other half I really like. Live I like it more. This one is better start to finish though.

I'm finding plenty that I like on this one. No Secrets is far and away my favorite tune at this point. These tunes scream "Take me on the road and play me LIVE & LOUD!!!"
The initial excitement with this album for me is slowly turning to disappointment. If he doesn't plan to tour with a full band in the coming months to support this album, then it would seem unlikely that it will happen at all...

more listens in, definitely getting some Jack White feels from the fuzzy guitar riffs and even some Iggy with the Stooges feels from the random yelping & laughing. The songwriting can be a bit cliche in spots, but he was admittedly light on editing for this album. As far as the production goes, its a better sounding record than the early Jacket albums but in clear contrast sonically from his most recent albums incl The Waterfall. I think once these songs get out in the wild when he inevitably tours with a full band, people may change their perception on many of these tracks.

Well maybe it's just bad crack?

I'm not sure how you can compare seeing the album played live to just hearing it on its release though. There's tons of songs on albums from lots of bands I'm not crazy about but love them when seeing them performed live. Jacket included.

There are also lots of songs  and albums that take some warming up to, and need quite a few listens for me. In fact it's pretty common for me even with bands I love.

To each their own though and I'm not going to judge what other people like or dislike.

I half love it, half not bothered. I LOVE Throwback, No Secrets and Out of Time. There are some I really don't like that venture too far into a lame 'dad rock' sound.

I really wanted to like No Use Waiting but the riff is too repetitive for me, it gets annoying. I also can't take All In Your Head seriously, what's with the lisp???

Overall I think it would have worked better an as EP. Like I said there are some good songs but rock is such a tired/dying genre, everything has been done to death, I prefer Jim's other more experimental first two albums. Like others have said I really wanted to love this album and was very excited for it but, something's missing.

+ 1 more vote for The Waterfall being awesome. I rate it above Circuital and Evil Urges, don't get me wrong I dig those albums too but TW was like a breath of fresh air. In Its Infancy is easily in my top 10 Jacket songs. Pure magic!

long live rock
be it dead or alive

I think it's a fantastic album if you can just accept it for what it is -  a collection of raw, rowdy rock songs.  it's not gonna change the world or cure disease, it's just a good, fun summer listen.

still not a fan of the production, sounds too much like some Phil Spector wall-of-sound nonsense.  but it is what it is, and I can deal with it.

you know what's actually dying? using "dad rock" as a pejorative.

What is that even supposed to mean these days? Do people without kids have better taste in music or is that we're out of time (yes I did that) with what's good? Why can't it be "mom rock" as well?

I have nothing against Dads. I'm always the first to spot a DILF in the vicinity

I guess by Dad Rock I just mean something that's light, tame, lacks any edge or bite. I stand by it! I guess I just didn't ever imagine Jim doing anything as cheesey as You Get to Rome. It might grow on me but for now I'll be skipping it, and a few others.

Now, DILF Rock is definitely something I could get on board with!

After three listens, the following is clear to me:

1.  No Secrets is undisputable king, everything else is at least a notch and a half below.

2.  I absolutely cant stand three songs: Fool, Yes to, and Rome.  i know theres a lot of guitar on Yes but its just mindless noise to me and his vocals arent helping.

3.  I like the rest of the songs on a spectrum between a 6.5 and an 8.  (No secrets is a 9.5).

4.  Eternally Even as a whole album is easily better.  It transcends.  Conversely, Ill probably never want to listen to this album from front to back ever again.  Some of that has to do with how many times ive already heard fool and throwback, but i also dont think the sum is greater than the parts here.  Its just a stack of parts.

5.  I think this was a release valve for Jim.  Maybe he was feeling creatively stuck, maybe he was feeling restless and frustrated with his usual creative process.  Either way, i think making the album the way he did served a purpose for him and his next work should be pretty damn good once he feels like spending some serious time on something again.

I was at Rough Trade, so I'm a bit bullish on the whole thing - as with all Jim and MMJ releases, it always sounds better live.

No Secrets grabbed me right away, but now I'm obsessed with All in Your Head - such a dirty crazy horse vibe and I can hear remnants of PJ's "Off He Goes"

I took a 4 hour road trip up to upstate New York this weekend, and listened to the album a bunch.
All in Your Head got better with each listen I thought too.
After numerous repeat listens my order is:
- yes to everything
- too good to be true
- no secrets
- out of time
- all in your head

- no use waiting
- over and over
- better late than never
- you get to rome

Great interview.

Find the timing funny that he just recently was the one to go back and "perfect" It Still Moves and put out a Re-Mastered version. Guess the pendulum swung back hard the other way.

Haha, i never thought about that. Very true.

And honestly, that whole process is probably directly responsible for how he felt going into making Distortion.  Seems like he was just tapped out when it came to fine tuning things.  Hopefully his next release finds him balancing that line masterfully.  However, if Distortion proves anything its that as long as Jim is excited about what hes doing, hes going to make some great songs.

I have to echo what others are saying with No Secrets being the best of the bunch.  In some of the songs the vocals are extremely hard to hear and I feel like I'm straining to make him out.  Throwback in particular sounds to me like they threw a big wet heavy blanket over the microphone and then had him sing from the other side of of the room.  That one was a huge disappointment for me cuz I've been waiting years for a studio version of that song.

Can anyone tell me how this sounds for them on vinyl?  I get the feeling with this album that it should be played from some kind of physical analog source.  This whole batch of songs and the ideas around it make digital mp3's seem like the least ideal way to listen.  The production definitely gets in the way for me on some of the songs but I keep listening to see if things click for me because I love more guitar oriented rocking out Jim and he seems really invigorated here.

My favorites so far are

1. No Secrets
2. All in Yo Head
3. Too Good to Be True
4. Just a Fool
5. Throwback

I am hearing a vibe from his new basement tapes recordings that seems to have opened the door for this album's sound, especially Down on the Bottom, which I love. I know DOTB were not his lyrics but I love the simplicity of the rhythm (more "circular" if you will ) which allow freedom for killer solos on the back end.

My god....

I've been listening to this a LOT and ..... wow

Jim....how could you not have recorded this with MMJ? oh my god....stuff like Too Good To Be true and THE BEST FUCKING SONG JIM JAMES HAS WROTE SINCE CIRCUITAL "NO SECRETS ".... it hits me like white lightning EVERY time....

It's almost as if this record is too good to be true. Naysayers have your day, but it'll be swallowed by the mounds of fuzz and the most haunting Jim James vocals we've ever heard. Let's be honest Jacket fans , this man's songwriting is what we cherish most about this band. And, when something like THIS mammoth comes out as only a solo record, it hurts a bit cause it's so good, it should have the band's fingerprints on it....

All in Your Head is  total loveletter to rock and roll defeating disassociation. My girlfriend will love this song. We're fucking HERE RIGHT NOW...

While saying that....this album, from whoever Jim played with Dave Givan on drums I knew that, is a monster. Jesusfuck Jim goes boogaloo on our ass at times. He lets loose and we are much better people for it. I haven't ever dug his excursions away from the Jacket, always loved the songs no matter what they're Jim's and they're powerful lightning in a bottle, but i wish they were ALL Jacket songs.

But coming soon, to a theater near you in 2019, they will be...

Just imagine....this band MMJ, ending a 3 hour show  at Red rocks with the epic twofer of Phone Went West into Too Good To Be true.....

Wow.....

Well luckily she isn't hahah what's so wrong about the post? Listen to Jim talk and you'll get 6 or 7 fucks out of nowhere and even in formal settings.

To the point, this album is pure divinity. There's some songs i skip, but they keep coming back to me in waves of desire. Holy fuckin shit i wish this was a Jacket album. WHO HERE EOULD PAY BIG MONEY TO HEAR CARL WAILING ON THIS RECORD?? I keep thinking that.

I love Jim's guitar tone, his style, his vibe, his sound, it's become instantly recognizable with the impact of reverb not shadowing the vocals since 2005, but is now caking the guitar. Then he's got his out of control octave pedal sounds he uses on the most blistering of Jacket material.

What we miss is that harmony that's always dangling there in the chords and the solos, there's always another riff going that doesn't take away but completes the song.

Here we get Jim raging with himself and myyyy gawwwwd is it DISGUSTING but.... i would be oh so lying, and so would all of us, if we said its better as a solo album and not as a record with MMJ.

But im so glad it exists for them to further these songs' journey live

Commenting on just a fool, I like to think of the lead guitar as more of a rhythm guitar. IMHO, just a fool is really a great high energy, dirty  groove track.

I have a friend that is having trouble getting over the repetitive "lead" guitar.  This song really opens up when focusing on everything else that's going on and listening to the guitar as more of the backing rhythm to the song.

I personally love this as an opener.

I've also taken a more restrictive approach to consuming Uniform Distortion.   Giving it a nice slow burn, a creeper if you will. Trying to savor it like a fine wine rather than taking a screwdriver to shotgun a PBR. :)

Fair enough...I'm obsessed with it though.  Had the vinyl on while hanging out with my girls today.  Just sounds so fresh and fun.  I like a casual Jim over an artsy, introspective Jim.

The more that times goes by, the more the songs disperse to their proper place in the pecking order:

Top Dogs: No Secrets, Out of Time, No Use Waiting, Too Good To Be True just barely hanging on.

Middle of the pack: All the others except for..

Bottom of the barrel: Just a fool, Yes to everything, Get to Rome

You accidentally put Yes To Everything at the bottom of the barrel instead of 10 feet above the barrel where it justly belongs.

as much as i love it i will tame my outrageous excitement from the album by saying it should've been a Jacket album, but more now that No Secrets, Too Good To Be True, All In Your Head and one other (or even a mixture of a few others, Fool / Time mashup?) should've been Jacket songs. But shoulda woulda coulda , they'll turn into Jacket staples soon enoughy

This record is one of my favorite things that Jim has ever put his hands on. The raw, adventurous spirit of the album came as a surprise to me at this point in his career, that he can still step back and access that ' feeling' is an incredible testament to a genuine artist.

That feeling reminds me a lot of the MOF song- Losin' Yo Head, both in its raw, and rocking delivery on that record, but also in the content of the lyrics. " The feeling of adventure- I think we all remember it"

I am reminded of an interview I read with Conor Oberst, where he was talking about the collaboration with Jim, and his insistence of accessing " Begginer's Mind", a buddhist concept of seeing the world as new- for the first time, during the song writing process. That concept seems prevalent throughout Uniform Distortion.

I have loved all of Jim's solo efforts, and even prefer all 3 records to a lot of the Jacket studio catalogue. ( Not a diss- i love every jacket album dearly, in its own peculiar way ) I get the impression with many of these songs having been intended for Jacket songs, that Jim may be a bit discouraged by the band's studio process ( The Waterfall took forever, although it seems to have been a wonderful experience recording) As Jim's muse seems to move along rather quickly.

Ok, been listening to this thing for a while now. Great album for me as there is a constant shuffle as to which songs I like best. Just a Fool has gotten better with time in the context of the album, for me.

Out of Time
Throwback
No Secrets
Yes to Everything
No Use Waiting
All in Your Head
Better Late than Never
Just a Fool

...are all great for me

You Get to Rome
Over and Over
Too Good to be True

...these get stuck in my head but not quite as penetrating as the list above

From Rolling Stone:

The songwriter also announced Uniform Distortion/Clarity: Deluxe Edition, an expanded vinyl reissue of his 2018 solo LP, Uniform Distortion, and its acoustic companion record, Uniform Clarity. The set, which is limited to 1,000 individually numbered units, is out March 22nd, 2019 via ATO.

The deluxe edition features Uniform Distortion on a black-and-gold vinyl mix, with Uniform Clarity on a black-and-white vinyl mix. It also includes an autographed fold-out poster; two B-sides, the "Rock and Roll Versions" of "It Will Work Out" and "Flash in the Pan"; and an exclusive seven-inch single featuring four previously unreleased covers: John Lennon's "How?", the Flying Burrito Brothers' "Hot Burrito #1," Link Wray's "Fallin' Rain" and Dan Penn/Chips Moman's "Dark End of the Street."

Just received this email:

Hello,

If you are receiving this message you have pre-ordered the Jim James - Uniform Distortion/Clarity: Deluxe Edition. The original release date was to be on 3/22/19, but due to an unfortunate manufacturing delay, the release date has been set back to 5/17/19.
We do apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you! Please reach out to us at info@colortestmerch.com if you have any questions.

Thank you for supporting Jim James!

Sincerely,
Colortest Merch

I haven't listened to the vinyl yet, but it all looks super professional. Remember the Circuital warpies?

I am going to take the plunge and just pay a digitizing service to rip my vinyl of the two bonus tracks to mp3 so that I will be able to listen to them.  I paid $40 for the deluxe vinyl edition of both albums to obtain the two full-band bonus tracks but I have no way of listening to them.  I had been hoping to track them down online for about two years now with no luck.  I think the process is going to take a few weeks but I will let you guys know when it is completed.

Friends, I need some help here.  My deluxe vinyl edition double album finally came in the mail, but I think there is a problem with my order.  My vinyl copy of Uniform Distortion appears to have two Side A's...  Both sides of the LP say 'Side A' and have 'Just A Fool' through 'Yes To Everything' listed and there appears to be no Side B, and then the bonus 7" only has the 4 covers and not the two full band versions of the Uniform Clarity only songs.....  I do not have any way to listen to vinyl, but can someone on here please tell me if the two bonus songs are like hidden on the 7" and not listed or written on the vinyl itself...???  I paid a lot of money for this and it seems like I didn't get the two songs that I actually wanted.

It will work out and flash in the pan are the final two songs on both UF and UD.

It's probably a mix up w the labels and not the pressing. I'd check the number of tracks on each side (by looking at the spaces between the tracks).  Side B should have 7 tracks (side A 6).

The 7 only has the covers.

"Hot Burrito #1" (The Flying Burrito Brothers)
"How?" (John Lennon)
"Fallin' Rain" (Link Wray)
"Dark End of the Street" (Dan Penn/Chips Moman)

You are a damn genius my friend!!!  Tucked way inside one of the pockets for the Uniform Clarity vinyl was a download card for the entire thing.  You just saved me an additional $70, and I'm already in for about $60 so far.  This project was escalating quickly.  That was a lot of money for two songs, even for me. Quote from: Brother Beck on May 11, 2020, 04:43 PMFriends, I need some help here.

"Dark End of the Street" (Dan Penn/Chips Moman)

is there a digital card for the covers?

You are a damn genius my friend!!!  Tucked way inside one of the pockets for the Uniform Clarity vinyl was a download card for the entire thing.  You just saved me an additional $70, and I'm already in for about $60 so far.  This project was escalating quickly.  That was a lot of money for two songs, even for me. Thank you very much!!!

I've been looking for these bonus tracks since this came out, but didn't want to buy the vinyl after buying both the UD and UC CDs. Would anyone be willing to share these in Mp3?

I don't have these anymore.  My house burned down about three weeks ago and we lost literally everything we own.  My wife and I and our two kids got out okay, and one of our dogs got out with us, but we lost the other dog and our cat.  All of my music was spread between an extra hard drive connected to my Mac desktop and a really old laptop.  I backed my music up on that hd but not the cloud.  I thought I created a Dropbox link with these songs but I just signed into my Dropbox account and no luck.

I finally got around to downloading the bonus tracks.  Hot Burrito #1 is the same version that's been around for years, which I find odd.  I believe this Dark End of the Street version is the same that's been around but not positive about that. Fallin' Rain is my favorite of the bunch, just an all around great version. The 2 "Distortion" versions are cool but nothing too eye opening. I'll see if I can get these uploaded for everyone.

I had been attempting to get those songs on my phone so I could listen in the car while driving, and I had uploaded them to Google Drive and just discovered that I still had them now that I have access to a laptop again.

I really like both of them a lot, but this version of "It Will Work Out" is absolutely essential in my opinion.
