Man, I can't believe I'm going to preorder something that won't be out for 6 months.  The time from announcement to delivery seems a little excessive. Hopefully I forget about it and get a nice surprise in February.

Wish there were some more live tracks of them in their infancy but those bonus tracks look awesome.  Most of those titles at least some of them we've never heard

Just got a darla records email that this got moved to 8/2.
States: "Release date moved to coincide with Summer tour."

Sadly I was thinking it was only a little more than a month away from release, but excited that we may just get heavy TTF songs at these shows at Red Rocks and Forest Hills!  :cheesy:

It is kinda disappointing but hopefully you're right, They Ran/The Bear/Old Sept. Blues are all at the top of my white whale list.

Optimistic prediction...they want to release the live album too, and it'd make more sense to release that first to promote the "tour." Then release TTF and play a bunch of those tunes at red rocks to promote that and celebrate the anniversary.

More likely prediction: both albums scrapped, tour cancelled, Jim solo album announced.

You're thinking an additional Jim solo album?

One of the 2019 "tour" announcements hinted about playing old songs, but I don't know the direct quote.  It was from their twitter feed.   That has got to be even more likely now that TT release date is pushed back.   It Still Moves reissue came out just prior to the Red Rocks 216 shows, and while they played a ton from that album, they skipped Rollin' Back, which continues to irk me as I have yet to see that one live.

It said "can't wait to get back on the road next summer and dig deep into the catalog." I hope they play most of TTF (if not all), but I feel like with there only being three shows that spending one show on TTF in full wouldn't feel great-would much rather them mix the songs throughout the two nights.

With the timing of the shows being now related to TFF's re-release, I'd expect Red Rocks to get the whole album played across the two nights (not in a row, but all songs played over two nights), with Forest Hills getting a TFF-heavy greatest hits type setlist.  Just my prediction here.

Some sites still say 2/14 (target/Walmart/amazon/bull moose)
Others say 8/2 (darla/Best Buy/merch bar/pop market/deep discount)

Most likely the few sites have not been updated, but I sure as shit hope it still gets that earlier release date!

Kinda doubt these other sites will have the release date right since Darla is pressing the record, I would assume. I get these pre orders are so the fans can finance the project to a certain extent, but I feel to hold on to our money for a year is kind of bullshit. If these places do hold the original release date I surely will cancel with Darla and order elsewhere.

The 2/14 date is interesting.  Jim originally sent Darla his Tennessee Fire demo tape packaged as a valentine to make it stand out.

Hadn't commented on this yet, but I don't like it being delayed this long. Kind of makes me mad.

In other news, I ran into Danny Cash a couple of nights ago, and he shared some of the new "liner notes" he had on his phone. I was at a benefit show for the Salvation Army and a couple of other local Louisville charities at Headliners (it was called "I Heart Heart" and was a tribute to the band Heart featuring lots of Louisville musicians). After the show, I went over to say a few words to Cheyenne Mize and saw Danny Cash standing behind her. I had previously met him when he was part of her band for the one-time-only collaboration for the Louisville Rock Lottery back in Jan. of 2017. I spoke with him for a while about all sorts of things, and while we were talking, he said he had something I might be interested in on his phone about The Tennessee Fire 20th Anniversary re-issue. He had images (that I guess Jim shared with him) of Jim's handwritten notes regarding the way the songs should be constructed and should appear on the album. There was even an original Jim doodle. He said it was all going into the Deluxe Anniversary re-issue of the album. It was pretty cool getting an early glimpse at stuff like that.

For those not remembering or who never knew, Danny Cash was the original keyboard player for MMJ and was with the band until he and Johnny McQuade quit after It Still Moves came out (tired of the relentless touring that Jim and the rest of the band were determined to continue, if I remember right). He's now part of a new local band called Hawks. He plays guitar in this band. They have a song on this year's new Louisville Is For Lovers album that had just been released earlier that day. His band and another one played quick sets at the WFPK Live Lunch earier in the day to hype the release. I didn't get to go, but I had my Louisville Is For Lovers shirt on because it was release day, and I went to Guestroom Records to get the Deluxe Double CD release of it right before the show at Headliners. John King is behind the project and is an awesome dude (also works at Guestroom Records now).

Also, I got a picture of us together, since I had failed to do that the first time I met him.

Do we know if it's been remastered? If it was done to the same standard as It Still Moves that wouldn't be an issue! Listening to those new mixes was like hearing the record for the first time again and I'd love that for TTF!

I really like the "new" artwork!

I do not know the answer to this, but I do not think it has been remastered - at least not to the same degree that ISM was - only because there was so much written about that process around the time of the ISM re-release and there isn't anything about this.  I would assume it would be getting the same kind of hype and write-ups.

Quote from: Lucius on May 02, 2019, 10:45 AMDo we know if it's been remastered? If it was done to the same standard as It Still Moves that wouldn't be an issue! Listening to those new mixes was like hearing the record for the first time again and I'd love that for TTF!

I really like the "new" artwork!

I do not know the answer to this, but I do not think it has been remastered - at least not to the same degree that ISM was - only because there was so much written about that process around the time of the ISM re-release and there isn't anything about this.  I would assume it would be getting the same kind of hype and write-ups.

yea, that would require some effort by the bandleader who doesn't seem interested in the band.

I think adding "at the moment" to that last sentence is appropriate.  I'm confident things will change, and MMJ will be back.  I don't know when, and it may be longer than many of us want.

yea, you're right "at the moment" is probably the better way to put it. They've consistently taken 2-4 yrs between albums so it's not totally w/out precedent but I expect we'll be past 5 years this time whenever another album does come out. Add in just 3 (likely contractually obligated) shows in 2 years and my pessimism is not far from the surface.

Five or six years means 2020 or even 2021.  I can deal with that. Especially since we've had a good amount of new and solid JJ and Carl music and tours.   Pearl Jam, my other favorite, is going to be in the 7 or 8 year gap between albums.   It has been 13 years between Tool albums, but that day is coming!  That day is near!

I'm a hopeless optimist but...

2011 - Circuital
2012 -
2013 -
2014 -
2015 - The Waterfall
2016 -
2017 -
2018 -
2019 - WE ARE HERE
2020 / 2021 - This is where I will start to get impatient. Most bands seem to take longer to recharge in-between albums as they go on, I'm not worried yet. I do think we could potentially only be in the middle area of a longer than usual break right now but I have faith in MMJ!

I would augment that to show they were at least working on The Waterfall in 2013/2014.

I would may be a bit more optimistic if ANYTHING was happening with the band aside from these obligated shows. No live release on the horizon ("in the can", my ass), no promo for TTF Anniversary, the guys booking more shows, trending towards no OBH, etc

(about to update my avi to Eeyore with all this complaining & pessimism)

I'd update the timeline just a bit, but I still get the point (haha) that there's not much going on on the My Morning Jacket front.  And completely agreeing with parkervb - can they let us know about anything coming up - the live album, the next OBH (I just jumped on Closer To The Sun to get my Caribbean rock show fix), the Waterfall follow-up, the TTF re-release, come on guys!!

2011 - Circuital
2012 - New Multitudes (JJ)
2013 - Regions Of Light & Sound Of God (JJ)
2014 - Lost On The River (New Basement Tapes JJ); Spanish Gold (Patrick)
2015 - The Waterfall (MMJ), Production of Ray LaMontagne & Basia Bulat (JJ)
2016 - Eternally Even (JJ); 4th Of July (Carl)
2017 - Tribute To 2 (JJ); Roger Waters tour (Bo)
2018 - Uniform Distortion; Uniform Clarity (JJ); Wished Out (Carl); Roger Waters tour (Bo)
2019 - WE ARE HERE; Brokenhearted Jubilee (Carl)
2020 / 2021 - This is where I will start to get impatient. Most bands seem to take longer to recharge in-between albums as they go on, I'm not worried yet. I do think we could potentially only be in the middle area of a longer than usual break right now but I have faith in MMJ!

Title: Re: 20th Anniversary of Tennessee Fire
Post by: millerjustin on May 16, 2019, 09:30 AM
I've been hoping they'd at least take the easy path and have TTF out by now, but I guess we have to wait until 8/2.  Likewise, it would be easy to just throw us a bone and release the beacon shows to keep the masses happy (even just a lazy layup of a nugs.net release without much fanfare or media push).

I know there's talk of "contract commitments" with AEG/AXS driving the RR/Forest Hills triad of shows, but I'm not sure they'd push around band member schedules, mobilize the back office and crew, and commit to practicing for a couple weeks without a bigger purpose behind it.  If they were really just shitting out 3 shows to avoid getting sued, they also wouldn't be wrapping in CID BBQs, meet and greets and dropping a reissued album the same week. It seems that these 3 shows will be a reunion of sorts (for both us and them) and lead into a renewed MMJ push.

All this being said, my assumptions remain that OBH5 won't happen until 2021, but there's a good chance that the band will mobilize for a tour and the fest circuit in 2020 that would perhaps support an early 2020 release of Waterfall 2.0 - if we're lucky, some multi-night runs and a NYE run prior to OBH5.  Again, these are all my personal assumptions based mostly on logic - no inside dope at all (other than 100% certainty on OBH5 not happening in 2020).

I also just listened to it. Have to go back and give it a thorough listen, but it has the elements of MMJ that I love. Specifically, Jim was trying out his "soul voice" for a couple of lines towards the end.

from the MMJ twitter feed accompanying the video:

friends, i'm pleased to share "john dyes her hair red" with all of you ahead of tennessee fire's 20th anniversary. this is one of the first song poems i ever wrote- i always liked the idea of a song being this little picture or puzzle, and not necessarily having to "mean" something or be about some big story or have tons of linear lyrics, but more just painting a weird little scene. i have always tried to make my music gender neutral when it comes to love or romance for the most part, so that a person of any gender could experience a song and not feel excluded if i was using "he's" or "she's" or whatever and this is an early experiment with that, of a person named john, which is traditionally a "male" name, who is dying her hair red and sitting in the shower til it all turns back brown- and maybe one would think- "well why did she ever even dye her hair red in the first place?" available in all the digital places! listen

The handout included has an interesting tidbit of information-the originally proposed tracklisting of TTF included Just One Thing, which obviously didn't make an appearance til ISM. The first side was also ordered much differently going:
1. Heartbreakin
2. They Ran
3. Old Sept Blues
4. The Bear
5. If All Else Fails
6. Just One Thing
7. Nashville to KY
8. Twlilight

From Twilight on, the proposed order is the same. Just interesting that Just One Thing was initially planned to be on the album, then later scrapped-wonder what happened!

Revisiting The Tennessee Fire 20 years later, there is still nothing that sounds like it. This isn't always a good thing—the album is lo-fi to a fault, several of the songs are structurally immature, and the band's sound screams potential, but the eventual catharsis of later albums such as It Still Moves and Z is missing. But this is a debut album (a naive and scattered one at that), and for that My Morning Jacket score extra points—it is all here, dusty and unpolished, rough but overtly charming, a prequel to a modern day rock 'n' roll story which felt like a fable from the start.

BAM!

some of these bonus songs are insane. Flew In On A Dead Horse isn't a favorite but so cool to listen to, All This Joy is soooooo good. Gifts could be shimmered with Carldust right now and sound so cool. The reverb is calling Jim.

This is so good. They are going to start spoiling us even more I think, too.
