Title: ANNOUNCING MMJ LIVE!
Post by: TheDude on Jun 17, 2021, 10:22 AM
So instead of the long rumoured second live album, we're instead getting a whole new series of live albums on vinyl!!!! The first release will be MMJ Live 2015. Do you think they'll do one album per tour or what will it look like? Different songs from different nights? I can't wait to find out!

Still waiting for 2010 Terminal 5 shows. No tapers allowed at the time due to professional recording

Got it ordered!  Hopefully more to come, I still would love to see more Nug shows though.

Any details on which shows the recordings were taken from?

Ordered!  I guess this is the live stuff in the can they been hinting about for years. There will definitely be more, too many songs not on it.  Can't wait, Tropics from this is on YouTube

I hope some of the future releases in this series are full shows or one run compilations. This kinda feels like Okonokos 2 with the way it's sort of a greatest hits tracklist.

Saw this a few minutes ago when checking in on Instagram and immediately ordered mine!

Rock And Roll!!!

They need to do a live DVD/Blu-Ray release like Pearl Jam's "Touring Band 2000" film. I love that one and would love something like that from MMJ. That would do it for me ... for a while.

My first thought was YES FINALLY!

And while I am super stoked on this, I don't love some things about this particular release.

Hopefully there is some better artwork tied to this series. The song selection is ok.

Additionally, if there are going to be more in the series, including some full shows (MMJ confirmed this on an IG response) I'd rather hold off until the ones I really want come out.

At $50 or so each, I will need to wait for the best ones.

However, I will spin the shit out of this one and buy the digital release when available.

Overall this is amazingly exciting news from the band!

Is this the version of Tropics from Red Rocks 2015? Sure sounds like it. I guess they don't consider that as a release?

Excited, but I'll wait for the downloads/streaming options. Would love the 2019 TTF anniversary show. The existing recordings out there gave me a whole new appreciation for that album and an official release would be amazing :cheesy:

That 2019 Tenn Fire show was incredible. Old September Blues worth the price alone, but then they do that to Twilight, They Ran, oh it's so damn good

Honestly I rarely listen to that album but I've had those recordings on heavy rotation lately! Old Sept, Nashville to Kentucky, Picture of You, The Dark,Twilight, War Begun, Going to Hell... just, holy **** they were on fire that night. It also makes me crave a new studio recording of Tonight I Want to Celebrate With You. I love how that song has evolved live. Keeps getting stuck in my head! Might be an unpopular opinion but I'd even love an entirely re-recorded TTF. Give us some definitive versions of those live jams.

That is my dream - for them to release a pristine modern day TTF. I know that's probably sacrilegious to some, and trust me I absolutely love the original, but from a songwriting standpoint I think it's undoubtedly Jim's best album, and the way they sound live (sax on Nashville especially).

While not quite pristine, there is at least one great quality bootleg of the 2019 TFF show at Port Chester.  And OBH4, set one, is TFF live.  You can get that one on nugs.net.

Love seeing the praise for the 2019 TTF show at the Cap Theater.  Was fortunate enough to make all four 2019 shows, the TFF concert was by far my favorite.  Performances start to finish were electric, maybe the intimate setting and crowd of mostly long time fans helped inspire them a bit too.

I like that bootleg audio, but if that TTF show was recorded and dropped as one of the upcoming live albums ....

Oh I can definitely live with the bootleg of 2019 TTF, I think the quality is great! Much applause to all the tapers, if any of you are here just know that you are appreciated!!!

The rest is just me dreaming out loud

Other tapings I'm often drawn to are those from the 2 night run at Fox Theatre in Atlanta 2015. The band sound like they're having a blast and that might be the loudest crowd I've heard during a MMJ recording? Would love for some of that to surface during these releases! Also the 2017 NYE run. Magical.

Ya OBH4 sbd is the best capture of TTF imo and you get AD on top of it.

What's the NYE 2017 recording that's out there? Like a radio feed rip or something? Sounds good iirc.

Oh yeah I'm very very thankful for OBH4 (getting all of TF and AD in one night is unreal) and the 20th anniversary show (awesome tape, amazing performance, distinct from the OBH performance).

I believe the NYE show was streamed on Sirius, that recording is on Archive.

This is cool and all, but if it's replacing that nice 4-month run when we would get 4-5 full length nugs shows a month, then color me disappointed. Loads of full length shows is where it's at, but for whatever reason they always seem to run out of steam after committing to it for a few months.

y'all got me to revisit the TTF show and damn if that War Begun and Picture of You ain't some of the best 20+ minutes you'll ever hear from these guys, I don't know what is. That and the IWBTWYD that follows is perfect after all that shredding.

front to back, that show is so fuckin devastating, Parker. one of my all time favorite shows...it's so listenable. The guitar melodies on Old September are goddamn orgasmic. It also has "Weeks Go By Like Days", one of the greatest lost Jacket songs...listen to that chorus...it is holy....it should've been on TTF.

I wouldn't mind an experiment like re-recording TTF...as long as they did it back in Shelbyville at the Quaids, grain silo and all.

Jim is using a Phase 90 on so much of the 2019 shows, I love his sound.....about time the band use some different modulation.

Great review although I personally love both Wonderful and the break up classic, Get the Point.

To me only Wordless and perhaps, Gideon, are too similar to their Okonokos offerings even though both are among my live favorites. Slow Slow Tune should've made the cut instead IMHO.

WHOLE HEARTEDLY AGREE that a fourth LP should've been included to air the dual 2015 behemoths PWW and Steam Engine.  Perhaps they are being saved as centerpieces for a future volume.

A HUGE however, this shit rocks so I feel incredibly spoiled picking these little nits.

I guess that's what a super fan does and it's why we love discussing this incredible band after all these years!!!

While I agree with the review's song selection gripes, the fact that this is vol 1 with more sets coming (hopefully) means we should see more soonish, and the Phone Went West and other deep cuts should follow.  I'd love some TTF songs hanging out with Slow Slow Tune, and Strangulation should get a damn showcase slot too.

Can we just all agree that given it's gross under representation on BOTH live albums, Volume 2 should be the 20th anniversary Tennessee Fire show?  Of all the albums, those songs have grown the most from their recorded versions.

Great suggestion for folks that haven't gotten that yet. All three nights are essential IMO.

However, I attended that OBH and the Tennessee Fire Capitol Theatre shows and give a definite edge to the Cap show for that material.

That entire OBH was an all-timer but you could tell they had more time to work up The Tennessee Fire material for the anniversary.

I'm almost shocked they didn't need sheet music and teleprompters for that crazy One Big Holiday.

Because there is such a high quality show of the band playing TTF in its entirety- why would the band choose a better version of the same thing as only their 2nd choice in the live series? To me that would feel like a series that's losing steam almost immediately. They have played a total of 3 shows that were that album in its entirety- lets go with a show that better represents the band. I say the 2nd choice should be a full show release-

How about 12/31/08- that wild new years show at MSG- full of rarities, guest stars, etc.

RED ROCKS 2016 both nights or highlights selected from both nights would be amazing in my opinion, that's a run that only has the Pat Myers videos to do it any justice.
Full video from both nights would be a dream because those shows were both filmed in their entirety pro shot.

I think the band, especially after this live stream, cannot underestimate the power of the visual aid. BRING BACK THE DVD'S!!!!!

I agree about the visual aid, but DVD's are a thing of the past. It's all about the livestream now. Seeing as how the band pulled off a very professional webcast through Nugs, why not do what Dead and Co and Phish do ( yes, MMJ is of that caliber) and offer livestreams for purchase during the tour?

I know that I would still attend my customary 1-2 shows per tour and would probably purchase at least a few more!

RR2016 would be great. Something from 2012 like RR or Merriweather would fill the gap since Okonokos and give us songs that have been sorely missing from the official releases.
