I was a little confused why In Color hadn't been mention in the previous reviews. Nice to see it called out as one of the 3 highlights in this one.

Lol. That writer is clueless, even referencing Phish being on pause.

A good sign is when different reviewers highlight different songs.
Pretty sure that's meant to be read if/when Phish is on pause, and I gotta say it's pretty on point unfortunately. The lyrics are bad, no 2 ways about it.
From that Paste article:
"But where something like It Still Moves or Circuital soars to untouchable heights..."
Lol. One of these is not like the other.

I kind of agree about the lyrics tbh, i enjoy more the songs that make you wonder what Jim is talking about rather than being spoonfed the obvious problems of the world.
But i do love the rock n roll

Agreed!
Lyrically not even close to his best
But musically and sonically this album is amazing (almost wish it was a full instrumental album)

Not really a review... but a FANTASTIC interview!!
Almost as a real fan asking the questions

I've enjoyed the lyrics on the new stuff so far. Of course, I'm not really a lyrics first kinda guy but I do look for phrases and hooks in lyrics that draw me in and the new stuff does deliver in spades in that regard.
About my only lyrical issue with an MMJ lyric was First Light, which is just too repetitive and simple for my taste.
I think Jim's lyrics are still coming from the same place as ever. However, instead of looking inward and dwelling on his personal depression and anxiety like he tended to so on the first few albums, he is turning his vision outward and pontificating more on resolving his trauma and sadness via love and connectedness, rather than on the sadness beneath his quest.
Hopefully, y'all understand what I'm trying to say!!

Not a terrible write up... but have to say I lose total respect of the journalist when they don't do their proper homework (and I like Paste).
Right after that line about It Still Moves and Circuital, the journalist references Lyrics to Wordless Chorus off of the "Okonokos" album.
C'MON MANNNNNNNN!!!

On the subject of fact-checking, the Stereogum interview (which is otherwise amazing) refers to Dave Givan as Dave Gibbons. While it would be cool to see the Watchmen illustrator behind a drum kit, give Givan his due!

Pitchfork My Morning Jacket Album Review (https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/my-morning-jacket-my-morning-jacket/)
Another less than positive review. I swear, it's like I am listening to another album than these people or maybe they forgot what good music sounds like. I. Just. Don't. Get. It.
I get a lot of what Pitchfork is saying, particularly in regards to lyrics. Fortunately, the jammier elements they chose to highlight this album are right in my wheelhouse so I'm pretty obsessed with this one.
Pitchfork is the most pretentious music site out there. I don't hold a high opinion of what they consider a good album.
Old guys with guitars: deduct 5 points

I get where they are coming from, but Tommy's point is the truth. Basically every Pitchfork review comes across as some neckbeard or "professional music critic" looking for any little reason to knock something.

I get not being into the lyrics on this album. But Jim has always had some weird songs (Into the Woods, Librarian etc) I just don't get giving this a 5 and some other album that's blips and pterodactyl noises a 10 like it's some god gift to the ears. Pitchfork just tries to hard to like what no ones else likes.
From the Pitchfork review:
"A band that self-titles its ninth album has committed to some serious introspection and My Morning Jacket all but admits they had been living a lie: For two grueling decades, they thrived in the jam-band ecosystem without being a band that actually jams."
Huh? I beg to differ...
I fucking can't stand Pitchfork's reviews!!
It is a good site to get music updates and news
But their reviews are always SHIT
I had a bad feeling it was gonna be a low score, since it took 5 days for them to put the review up
Eh, as much as I loathe pitchfork, this review brings up some very valid criticisms. Although, I think I'd give it 6 instead of a 5.

It's more about looking cool while they review something than it is actually reviewing the quality. Giving an older band like MMJ (snooze...dad rock) a good review would not be good for their street cred.

The guy who loves Emo wrote this review.
Pfork has been that way for a while and MMJ has been viewed that way for just as long, which is what makes the positive ratings of Circuital and The Waterfall kinda bizarre.
Waterfall II had a pretty good review there too.
The fact that just a couple days after the new MMJ review they published a piece about a guy falling in love with Phish over the pandemic had my eyes a-rollin.
