has anyone heard of this song?
umm... no what is it? :-?
Outtake from Z, I believe.
I am guessing that was an early title for Highly Suspicous. I hope I'm wrong.
Its not Highly Suspicious.... totally different track

That's a pretty good song. Have any other outtakes surfaced?
Wow, I like this song a lot. Sounds more like a EU outtake than Z to me, but either way, how the hell didnt this make the cut for EU?!?! Two Halves makes it on over this Devil's PBJ sandwich?!!?!
I think after 1 listen I like it more than half of EU.
Good stuff! And nice find!

My guess is that Jim went insane and wrote a whole concept album of peanut butter songs. But the band staged an invervention and told Jim that, for the love of God, he needed to write about other things. They told him he could keep just one song, hence Highly Suspicious, MMJ's most misunderstood track, which stands as a testament to what a polarizing work of genius his original vision would have been.
This Song is Incredible!
How many of these gems is Jim keeping in hiding?
Sounds awesome.
This song is awesome. Where did you find it? Also, I don't think it's really called Devil's peanut butter.
xmascriminal,
i can barely type - and i'm terrible at best of times - but u have me in tears with laughter. love it.
fun song - but over the top. getting camp. maybe time for him to write a film score.
but u are a scream xmas.
Oh, this is fantastic. Thanks for posting!
Wow this is pretty wonderful. It's like a mix of sooner and what a wonderful man and an upbeat into the woods
Love it! I was dancing all over the room while listening. These guys can do NO wrong.
this has got to be a joke. between 'dear wife' and 'devil's peanut butter' i'm left thinking jj swallowed mccartney whole.
next we'll find he's bought a farm in scotland. he already has the jacket and the woolie hat.
and what's with the lawrence welk steal! ::)
please let it be a joke.

Seeing as how Paul was at the Grammys last nite, I dont think JJ ate him Hannibal Lecter style.
And you seriously think this sounds like a McCartney song?!!!? The music definitely doesnt, and the lyrics dont really either. Sounds like neo-vintage MMJ to me.
If anything, it sounds more like a George Harrison tune than McCartney
I had to do some research but I have confirmation that this song is an outtake from Z.
If you watch the EPK for Z they show a list of potential songs at one point and Devil's Peanut Butter is the tenth song listed.
(wow, I am such a geek for this band)
Well then it's good they cut it, because it wouldn't have fit on Z. But as far as EU is concerned, they could have replaced Two Halves and Thank You Too with Dear Wife and Devil's Peanut Butter, and I would have been happy.

That's the reference I thought the poster was refering to. And for some reason I thought I saw that on the EU EPK, that's why I thought it was Highly Suspicious. I had no idea there was this track floating around. Awesome! How do I get this!!!!!

Agreed. I dont think the sound is quite Z or EU, but sounds like something they wrote in between almost. That said, I think it wouldve fit great on EU but I understand why they wouldve cut it out of Z.
I can think of a handful of songs on EU Id want replaced with DPB

How did you read my mind that it would be #1 to receive the axe from EU? ;D
Try listening to Two Halves this summer when the sun starts going down and you are cruising around in a classic car sippin' on a cherry coke. If you've done all of that, and you still don't like it, then keep trying. ;)

I noticed that country twang in the way JJ sings the verses, and then the steel guitar...the bassline and rest of the music just gives it so many other elements as well.
too bad it didnt make it onto an album so more people are aware of it.

Like a trade for the CD or a trade for the digital file?
just a digital song. i mean i'd probably just give it away but i'd love some goodies/rarities too!
I have a CD this track was on and if someone knows how to upload it somewhere for everyone to have send me a message and I'll just give it to you. Or if anyone just wants the track send me a message I'll try to figure out a way to send it to you.

trying to out-do me? haha
Not really. I just didn't want people to think they had to have something to offer to get the track. I was going to try and upload it somewhere for everyone but I really don't know how to go about doing that and guessed someone else might.

I already got them from someone, but youll get multiple mix cd's that will have been well worth the wait. They will arrive at the most unexpected time and be that much more awesome. This was all planned for your auditory satisfaction 8-)
So.. How do I get these three tracks in mp3 form?? Some kinda high tech digital trade?? i'm too stoned for this.. No download buttons?
super high tech, your brain might explode. or just pm one of us, me included.
I like the riff. It's very happy go lucky.

Can anyone help me decipher a lyric from DPB?
"If I can't believe in movie screens ... .... , then I won't believe in anything at all."
It could be "movie screens and leather" or "lovers" or "movie screens in london" for all I know. Can anyone make it out for sure?

I'm going with leather.. Rhymes with better..
Such a great tune, I've really gotten into it lately. It's quite catchy :)
Just picked up the promo sampler this song is on. Fantastic song. Maybe we can get the band to play it in December...
I just found out about this song today and can't seem to find it. I really want to hear it, seeing as I love chills and how could I know, so if anyone knows where I could listen to it I would love and greatly appreciate that.
I forgot about this song for a year or so.. it's one of their best and thats funny because it hasn't even been released.
Still never heard this song. Not sure I do. I sort of like the idea of having one song in the arsenal, one bit of lore, one forbidden fruit that remains as such. It's like Calvin's voice: perhaps what I imagine to sound like will never live up to what it actually sounds like.

I'm assuming JDUB didn't know, but this question about Devil's Peanut Butter has been asked, quite recently in fact, and put to rest.
Back when I first joined the forum, DPB was available in a number of places, including The Steam Engine blog. However, the band does not want this track public and it was pulled from various websites.
Many of you have noted the ID on this track lists the composer as Scott Cresto (http://www.qmusic.com.au/bigsound2009/index.cfm?action=dsp_speaker&ID=437&contentID=406). (the following is speculation) Cresto is a record exec who likely gave the green light to put DPB on something called the Sundance Film Fest Sampler 2007 (there's a picture of Cresto online at Sundance in 2005). My guess is he included this track, recorded during the "Z" sessions, without or against the band's wishes. A search of this guy shows he's still in the biz.
Bottom line, some of us got the track before the band's wishes were made clear. Most recently, when this came up again, I asked for the band's permission to provide a download link. The band's wishes continue to be that the track not be publicly shared. We need to respect that.
MMJ provides its fans with so much, some for sale and some for free. Don't use the forum on their website to disrespect their wishes.
The other day a theory involving this song popped into my head, so I thought I'd revive this thread.
I hear "Highly Suspicious" as (at least partially) an expression of Jim's dubious feelings toward the marketing and business sides of the music industry: "Ain't nobody care what's goin on in your mind, but they got they eye on your prize."
It occurred to me that the "peanut butter pudding surprise" could be a direct reference to the DPB release debacle. The surprise was played on the band by the label/whoever put DPB on that Sundance sampler (which dropped just a few months before the EU writing sessions).
Through that lens, HS comes across as an explicit indictment of the industry's disregard for the feelings and wishes of artists. It's a line that just seems silly on the surface, but those involved at the label might know exactly which Peanut Butter Jim's talking about—with the implication of, "don't ever fucking do that again."
Maybe I've just thought about this too much , but what do y'all think? Does this theory hold any water?
Damn. Well I hope one day they release it officially....
