Not sure if this has been posted yet. From jambands.com:
Jim James, Conor Oberst and M. Ward are the Monsters of Folk
My Morning Jacket's Jim James, Bright Eyes visionary Conor Oberst and singer/songwriter M. Ward will release a collaborative album as Monsters of Folk on September 22. The self-titled project was produced by Nebraskan native Mike Mogis and will feature original material by all three songwriters. Mogis has produced several Bright Eyes records and also worked with M. Ward on his Post-War album. Though no official announcement has been made, the group is expected to tour after the album's release.
James, Oberst and Ward first toured together under the Monsters of Folk alias in 2004. Each musician would play his own short set and then the three performers would collaborate on a mix of original songs and covers (including classics like Bob Dylan's "Girl Of The North Country" and Willie Nelson's "Always On My Mind).
"M. Ward, Conor Oberst and myself have done several tours together called the Monsters of Folk," James told Relix/Jambands.com a few years ago. "We'd play during each other's sets and do our own sets as well. And M. went out on tour with us a few years ago. We were his backing band, and he'd come out and play with is."
The modern folkies have also collaborated in a variety of settings over the past five years. Notably, in 2006 James sat in with Bright Eyes at Bonnaroo, and in 2008 Ward joined My Morning Jacket onstage at Coachella.
Holy shit, no one here knew about Monsters of Folk! ::)
September 22 being the date is news to me though :)
I'm kind of surprised its that quick..most interviews I read with M Ward and others said it was going to be 2010 possibly. This is great news.

Um...yeah I knew I wasn't breaking any news about Monsters of Folk. Though I thought I might sprain some news with information on the album release date. I'm glad I could provide you the opportunity to share your witty sarcasm.
Sweet! A release date is HUGE news!!!!! That's only 3 months and some change away. Fall is going to be excellent. This will be the soundtrack to my beach vacation this year! [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]

Late October actually. Kids on fall break. Prices are MUCH MUCH cheaper. We'll have the beach practically to ourselves. It won't be 95 degrees and humid as hell.
Gulf Shores average high is still in the low 80s for October.
Only gamble is with the dreaded hurricane season.

This is awesome news!! I love to vacay in the Fall, too! Monsters of Folk on Dia De Los Muertos? MMmmmwwaaaaaaaa! ;D
I checked the boards randomly not expecting for any sort of big news, and see this....AWESOMME
I guess this is why MMJ is on hiatus for 2009, but i think it will be well worth it

Some more info:
Monsters of Folk – comprised of Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis, My Morning Jacket's Jim James and M. Ward – will be releasing their first collaborative album on September 22. The self-titled effort was recorded in Malibu, CA and Omaha, NE, and produced by Mogis. Although these critically acclaimed artists have shared the stage before, this album marks their first recorded output as a band.
Monsters of Folk began as folklore of sorts, when James, Oberst, Ward and Mogis did their first run of shows together in 2004. Like the musical revue shows that went town to town when rock 'n' roll was newly born, the tour was called "An Evening With: Bright Eyes, Jim James and M. Ward," although amongst friends and crew, it became affectionately known as the "Monsters of Folk Tour." While entertaining audiences coast to coast with gorgeous acoustic melodies and world-weary tales, the foursome vowed to make their way to a studio at some point after the tour's completion. Instead, the songsmiths went on to individually release some of rock music's most exciting albums of the last five years – Bright Eyes' I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning and Cassadaga; My Morning Jacket's Z and Evil Urges; M. Ward's Post War and Hold Time. Never ones to forget their promises, when downtime presented itself, they convened in the studio multiple times over two years, with Mogis at the helm of their first recorded effort.
All four members play every instrument on the album, supplying everything from drum fills to cascading backing vocals. The songs – some road-worn fables, some intimate and intricate with electronic elements, some woozy and sun-soaked – are everything one might expect from these four musical minds collaborating together.
Track Listing:
1. Dear God (sincerely M.O.F.)
2. Say Please
3. Whole Lotta Losin'
4. Temazcal
5. The Right Place
6. Baby Boomer
7. Man Named Truth
8. Goodway
9. Ahead of the Curve
10. Slow Down Jo
11. Losin Yo Head
12. Magic Marker
13. Map Of The World
14. The Sandman, the Brakeman and Me
15. His Master's Voice
Awesome.
Great song titles.
Man, a tracklisting already?
September can't come soon enough!!
Nice! I wonder which ones are Jim-written...

Pretty much. I thought it would make this album. He played it at the Rudyard Kipling show, though!
I was suprised to not see wonderful on there as well. WHatever I guess.
I guess it's still possible that Wonderful (The Way I Feel) was a "working" title and maybe it has a new name but probably not.

I know Man named truth is a conor song cause it's been played before, and I'm assuming Temazcal and THe Sandman, THe Brakeman and me is conor as well...
The Sandman, The Brakeman and Me sounds like an M. Ward title to me. Who knows though.
I figured that song would be one written by all of them ;D
So how is this going to work exactly - is every song only written by one member with the other 2 doing guitar and backing vocals on every song, or are some songs going to be co-written and maybe they switch off on verses or harmonize or something, or somewhere in between???

Conor had a song on his last Bright Eyes album called "If the Brakeman Turns My Way." I think that's where Ghostless was comin' from.

Of course, with the three names in the title, it might be a collaboration between all three.
Losin' Yo Head and Whole Lotta Losin' clearly sound like Jim titles though.

Correct. Most thought it would make this album though. I'm sure it was recorded for the Evil Urges sessions, but who knows when we'll hear it.
Not a Conor fan at all, but definitely looking forward to hearing this album.

I agree. I've been a fan of his music for years now, and while I love it, I agree his earlier work can be polarizing. However, I popped in I'm wide awake, it's morning at work the other day for the first time in a while, and was reminded how truly amazing that album is. I don't really get how people can say he's not that good.
You can sign up for a newsletter now at monstersoffolk.com and when you do they send you a MOF stencil on a pdf file for spraypainting MONSTERS OF FOLK all across your neighborhood. ;D This is gonna be so good. I may have to quit my job to follow this tour across the country.
I'm really hoping they're added to Austin City Limits fest. I have no reason to believe they will be (other than Preservation Hall is playing too and OMG wouldn't it be cool if Yim showed up to play with them?!?) but I just think it'd be awesome if they were added.

I hear that Preservation Hall are regulars at the New Orleans Voodoo Fest, so what if he made a cameo to play there as well?
Here's to hoping!

"Dear God" is a Jim song... sounds like Curtis Mayfield wrote this one from the grave.
"The Sandman..." is an M. Ward song, sounds like an M. Ward song. Lots of echo-ey guitars and good harmonies in the chorus.
Dear God has gotz da hot beats! The harp is def a nod to Curtis.
The Sandman sounds great in an old timey way.
Looking forward to this album!

Your already judging one day after three songs from the album are released? :-/
I was going to wait but I didn't last long. ;DI couldn't help it.
I love how they each sound like a particular member's songs yet all three of them work together to take the song to the next level. Sandman, Brakeman and Me is fucking dreamy! And Dear God? HOly crap is that song gonna grow like a beast! That's the MONSTER!! [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]
With such diversity exemplified in the 1st three songs, I feel like a regular full length wouldn't do their creativity justice and would come of as somewhat disjointed.
A nice 3 album release is what I expect. Just sayin'
I'll ask again. Is that Jim with reverb in his falsetto backing on Brakeman or a female vocalist? I'm assuming the former.

It's Jim. I think.
DOES ANYONE ELSE HAVE IT BAD?
THOUGHT I COULD DO WITHOUT MOF. BUT I'VE BEEN PLAYING 'DEAR GOD' NONSTOP FOR THE LAST 14 HOURS!!!!!! OH, GOD.
WON'T JJ GOING BACK TO MMJ SEEM LIKE BACK TRACKING ?

I'm judging on the 3 songs that I heard that have been released. I think they are ok. the Sandman sounds like a M ward B-side or just an ok song from one of his albums. None of these songs excite me very much but like I said its a side project and I don't have high expectations.

I have heard plenty of songs and/or albums and immediately thought "meh"...sometimes you just got to take it slow and let it work its way in. Listen for awhile...then put it away for awhile. Bring it back out later and see what happens.
I personally like everything I've heard so far. In my experience tho I've had plenty of knee jerk reactions to songs or albums that I later find myself not being able to live without. Take your time with it is what I say.

I get what you are saying...but I don't see it as something I need to love. I thought "Say Please" was okay when I first heard it, and it's growing on me a little. But "Dear God"? It's...I...wow. I get what they're trying to do here, but they're way off the mark.

Truth.
I'm open to letting these songs grow on me, but I'm not impressed just yet. I'm also skipping the tour...too rich for my blood.
The songs are good enough to make me want to buy the album, but I'm not falling over myself.
As for the tour I can't miss it. Especially if Yim breaks out a song or two from "Tribute To". Or a solo "Where to Begin". Those four minutes would be worth the price of admission. He could stand on stage for ten minutes and play the freaking spoons against his thigh for all I care.
Can I get an Amen?

Yep. I CANNOT get into Conor. He's like a giant dark cloud and might be the reason why I only "like" these songs. (That's so terrible.) I even saw him before Wilco a few weeks ago and I thought my excitement for Jeff and the boys would trick my mind into liking Conor.
Nope. I just can't do it.

Of course it does. I just said I liked the songs. Sue me. It just seems like some people were going to make up their minds before this even came out based on their dislike of Conor. Which is crazy. Brakeman.... is really just a great M. song and if you don't like Dear God, you aren't going to like much of what Jim is going to come up with in the near future, I can tell you that.

But M and Jim are my two favorite musicians in the world, and really, they CAN'T do any wrong. And whether you like Conor or not, you have to admit he's a great song writer, and if you don't, your lying to yourself. Shit, I'm getting overly defensive again.

I don't know if I agree, for my money the straight up rockers (Aluminum Park and Remnants) on Evil Urges were pretty generic rockers by MMJ's standards and were weak spots on the album.

It being a dead year for MMJ, I haven't been around these parts much lately, but MOF brought me back to see what people had to say, and I've only heard the one song they have played on the radio (92.5 is the only station playing it in Boston I believe) and unfortunately I can't really say much other than that it's... erm... well... just okay.
and it looks like that's the consensus.

I love all three songs so far. Brakeman is classic M Ward. That guy just writes the perfect song. Say Please is great! And Dear God just grows on me with each listen... and I keep listening to it over and over again. I think it starts out with a nod to Jim's cover of Sianara (sp?), love the harp and when the chorus comes in....WOW! Jim is just shinning!

For this month's cover story, Grammy award-winning artist Norah Jones sat down with friends and musicians Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes), Jim James (My Morning Jacket), M.Ward and Mike Mogis to talk about their collaboration as the Monsters of Folk. The band, whose new self-titled album has been a long time in the making since first touring together in 2004, talked about how they met, the inspiration behind making the album and how they managed to finally settle down and record together amidst their busy schedules. Here's a snippet:
Norah Jones: Did you guys all bring songs in? Did you write them all together from start to finish? Is every song different?
Jim James : For the first session, we didn't have any demos or anything beforehand. It was just kind of a big mystery. One person would play a song and then we'd all sit around and talk about it and then jump on different instruments. It's been fun because it felt like we were back in high school starting our first band and learning how to play music again. To me, that was really fun--being able to go back on the drum kit and feel like I was 12 years old. It's that Zen beginner's mind that I think is important to keep coming back in your life. We typecast ourselves in the same role that we think we have to play over and over again. It's nice to remind yourself that you can be a different person whenever you want.

Whatever I have of Conor I've been listening to a lot lately. It's just bootlegs (MOF 2004) and stuff on compilations that I have floating around.
I really like Lua, At The Bottom Of Everything and Laura Laurent. What should I buy????
Without a doubt, get "I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning" (Bright Eyes).
That's what Lua and ATBOE are on.
But I would highly recommend one song in addition: Let's Not Shit Ourselves (To Love and Be Loved). This is the 10-minute closer of the album prior, and it's my favorite song of his.

Fun interview!
I couldn't agree more with Conor on this:
CO: I personally have a great love for the song "The Sandman, The Brakeman, and Me." I really enjoy that one. Matt's music has always had a special quality for me. It's kind of like an audio Xanax. If I ever feel anxiety or something, and I'm like in an airport, or some place I don't want to be...
JJ: Mmm hmm...
CO: ... I can put on, like, an M. record and I'm instantly calmer. And that song has that, that's like a really beautiful tranquilizer shot. It makes me feel instantly as I'm in like, a wonderful dream.

Nice!
QuoteJIM JAMES:
"Be Thankful For What You Got," by William DeVaughn.
This song is the ultimate statement: "Be thankful for what you got." It is perhaps the most peaceful and gentle—yet oh so stirring and stimulating—groove mankind hath ever birthed. When I listen to it, I listen on repeat.
"Be Thankful For What You Got," by William DeVaughn.
This would be our second listen of the song, at which point, myself and anyone else in the car would continue to feel more and more happiness from its gently mind-melting waves of joy and pure bliss.
"Be Thankful For What You Got," by William DeVaughn.
This would indeed be the third of hundreds of repeat listens, stopping the audio only for pee or food breaks.
This, my friends, is the ultimate song to listen to on repeat. It is over seven minutes long to begin with, and when you listen, you just get lost in it. Repeated listens turn it into the greatest 2,380,970,900-minute song you've ever heard.
;D ;D ;D I do this too.
You know you've picked the right person to spend the rest of your life with when you come home from work and find a non-descript envelope on your desk with a hand-made card containing two tickets to MOF in NYC for no reason other than "this if for dragging me out to all your concerts of bands I never heard and wound up liking"

That's because he's a Folk Gangsta!
There is a great interview in Paste this issue. I can't find it online but I'm sure it will be somewhere soon. M is so serious in the pictures but he has been damn funny in some of these interviews!
Also, I was wondering if they were actually going to try to pull off doing drums live, and they answered that question. No. They are bringing a special surprise guest to do the drums. Hmmmmm. And then I think M or Conor said, "Yeah it's going to be Jack and Meg White" and Jim says, "And Neil Peart.....but we'll turn him way down in the mix." ;D
Dammit I need some candy.

As to whether Monsters of Folk will perform additional dates beyond those that have been announced, Ward says with a quiet chuckle, "If the country wants us."
James adds, "Yeah, if the country demands more Monsters of Folk, we might have to give them what they want."
Uhhh, yes please.

I had pre-ordered on Amazon. Is there any material difference btw Amazon and the MOF site, such as the guys pulling in a bigger percentage of the sale, or bonus tracks/digital copies? If so I'll gladly cancel my Amazon pre-order.
I was just thinking how awesome it was that we are only 8 days away and no "leak" talk yet. Thanks Pete. :-/

I have begun the illegal pleasure of listening. mmmm. good stuff.
alright folks, you won't be disappointed with this release. I thought I'd be overwhelmed by too much conor, but it's really well balanced. without saying too much and spoiling the fun all I'll say is M Ward really has some great moments on this. It seems like it gives him a chance to rock out a little hard than he usually does.
This album is a head nodding album. bob your head yo, that's what's up.
a success.
oh and Magic Maker say what? awesome song.
oh yeah and "His Master's Voice" is the bomb snap pop.
I not going to say anything to ruin the songs, but fuck Merriweather Post Pavilion, this is the album of the year. I enjoy MMP for sounding cool and sounding like the future of music, but I love the best of what's around now.
I caved. :(
Jesus Christ this album is amazing.

I'll give it another listen but right now, really not digging it. :-/ Ah well.
If you're not diggin it I highly recommend sitting down in a quiet place with your best audio equipment. The production on this album is amazing.
I noticed on the latest email "Yim Yames" is also on this album
I don't really care for M. Ward or Conor Oberst, so I think that's affecting my appreciation of the record. I'm not particularly impressed by Yim's songs either, but I'll come back to it.
I never got into Oberst's stuff but I appreciate what he does. I initially got soured by what to me seemed like a borderline emo-trying-to-escape-emodom plus his legions of emo-esqe fans.
In all honesty though, I didn't really even key in on the vocals so much as the musical production. Jim's voice sounded stellar, but I'm biased. I think the balance worked between his style of musicianship and everyone elses and it came together quite well.
Definitely lives up to the hype in my book, and here in NYC-area it's been hyped quite a bit on WRXP

if you can get past conor's fans and the pretend angst, he's a great songwriter. i also like it how Jim describes M Ward's songs in that interview---like musical xanex (zanex) or something. they are all lullabies. (mean it in the best way)
I think RXP had to compensate for the (final?) loss of KROCK. I still have my Sirius but my fiancee listens to RXP all the time, which is how she heard about the band. Is there an official first radio single?

I don't think I'd call conors "angst" pretend.
the reason conor oberst sucks is because he's a little bitch. not to be harsh, he is definitely, without a doubt the weakest aspect of Monsters of Folk. His songs are decent but if he wasn't a part of this it probably would have been better.
Sorry. The extra Boston MoF ticket is going to my mom, who turns 65 on the day of the show! See ya' in Beantown!
Considering that conors songs are some of the strongest on the album, I doubt it.
QuoteConsidering that conors songs are some of the strongest on the album, I doubt it.
completely disagree but that's just personal taste. I think M Ward really shines on this album. It feels like conors songs are crammed down your throat and you are forced to deal with it. when Conor is doing back up vocals or trading verses it isn't a big deal. overall though he is definitely the weakest link.
the album is amazing. I'm really loving magic marker, losin yo head, the right place and his masters voice. those are my favs of the record. it was more than what i was expecting.
I'm losin' my head over Losin' Yo Head! This album is way better than I thought it was going to be and now I'm going to have to find a way to make it to the show.

M. Ward does shine, I agree. They all do. What a fucking album.
So is Jim the Sandman or the Brakeman? It's so pretty. :)

is there such a thing as a weak link in a supergroup?
Oops, I realized that this is where this belongs.
Ahead of the Curve, Temazcal, Man Named Truth and Sandman (still) are the highlights of this album for me. (Brakeman was my favorite tune off of Cassadega so this is fitting)
Besides the beats and harp, Dear God is unlistenable to me. I liked it the 1st time when I heard then realized (again) Jim's faux soul, 70's R&B voice just comes across contrived and vanilla IMHO.
Goodway and Baby Boomers are nice little ditties that would be fun to hear live. Goodway in someways reminds of Magic Trick in it's length, pace and style.
His Master's Voice is a beautiful tune until the obnoxious close. Dare I say it? Yes it reminds me of Fleet Foxes ;)
On first listen, I found Right Place to be too cheesy until I realized I missed Jim hitting at least one high note with a tiny little 'verb on it.
Slo Down Jo' just didn't seem to jive with the rest of the album for me. Now if I was blazed up with headphones on underwater staring at tropical fish under a giant coral reef, I'd love this song.
Losin' Yo Head is just a fun tune. Part of me is bummed that this is the best rocker in the entire album because on any other album, that would be disappointing. Then I reminded myself this was the MOF and I was cool :)
Whole Lotta Losin' - Good road tune.
Magic Marker - On the fence. TBD
As I mentioned above (yeah, mostly Conor stuff) is what hit me the most. Temazcal, Man Name Truth, Ahead of the Curve and Sandman are all great tunes for me.
So those are my initial impressions.
See where more listens takes me.
My initial impressions are this:
Jim is the singer on "his" tracks, where as everyone else come across as "vocalists"
I don't find Oberst to be in my face at all
Some of these songs at first blow are so sparse and empty, and then you really listen, and you see there's a beautiful quantum world full of delicate intricacies going on underneath
Dear God It actually comes across as a B-Side of Evil Urges for me, which places it on par with my view of that album
Say Please: HOLD OUT YA HANNNNND I can't get it out of my head
Whole Lotta Lovin: I love the tremolo and the tenor tones going on the background plus the general boogie atmosphere makes me want to drink beers while BEING A PASSENGER in a car (Since driving is bad)
Temazcal: This is one of those sparse songs with this beautiful underlying complexity that isn't evident at first. When it comes on at first, I'm inclined to skip, but I tell myself to just turn it up and relax. This is really because I'm all itching to go after the track before it
The Right Place: I love Jim's vocal range on this and the phrasing he uses. Aside from that, it's a standard track. But I listen to his voice like I do the guitars on OBH
Baby Boomer: A good showcase of the collaborative nature of the album
Man Named Truth: Putting the "Folk" in Monsters of Folk
Goodway: My "meh" track, except I thought it was Baby Boomers b/c of the line about taking people for a ride
Ahead of the Curve: Just a really cool song. I don't know how else to put it. Again with the layers...listen closely and you hear a gentle electric arpeggio going on
Slow Down Jo: Maybe because it's my name, but when I'm driving this is a good antidote to being in a rush. And again...full of beautiful, subtle layers
Losin Yo Head: Speaks for itself
Magic Marker: I like it more as it goes on
Map of the World: I like how it builds. It's got this intensity to it without being too angsty
Sandman: This is a great rainy day song. And I like rainy days
His Masters Voice: I like the build, and I'm not bothered by the weirdness at the end.
Overall, I don't find any of the tracks to be skippable, and I can't wait for a physical copy for some real hi-fi experiences.

YES YES AND YES YES YES!
The weird ending reminds of a Beatles type finish. A good way to close an all time great record IMO. :)
Has anybody really payed attention to the lyrics to His Master's Voice? They're beautiful. Some of Jim's best in my opinion. I might get a word or two wrong, but this is bascially it.
The holy rolling dice with Christ at twilight
And they hear their Master's voice
They run to do their chores
At Master's calling
Their job to light
Rewrite the bible
For a whole new generation
Of non-believers
The pastor screams out to the crowd
There's even that must be put down
And it touches the soldier boy
He heeds his Master's voice
His life is calling
"Sweet solider boy"
The speaker's pleading
He hears his Master's voice
Do you hear your Master's voice
Calling like the lady siren's call?
Sweet solider quiet
Just starin' at the scenery
And he hears his Master's voice
He hears the call to war
The sirens singing
Out on the line
There's something strikes his side
He sees his inner child
He hears his mother's voice
Softly calling
Spirit soldier's mother, heavens
She holds up a paper cup
And the sound of life and love
Fills her ears
You're only gonna hear what you wanna hear
Do you hear your Master's voice now?
The holy Christs speak twice as nice
But the one that I like best
He sings inside my chest
I hear my master calling

Wow, these are amazing. They're up there with Steam Engine and I Needed It Most for Jim's best.
On a related note, remember when we all thought that Good Intentions was an actual song? Has anyone tried sequencing this song right at the end of Evil Urges? A Smokin from Shootin --> Touch Me Pt. 2--> His Master's Voice combo seems too good for mortal ears.
QuoteWow, these are amazing. They're up there with Steam Engine and I Needed It Most for Jim's best.
I would put Where to Begin on that list too. Also, since you mentioned it: before I was able to buy the album, I was reading some reviews on Amazon.com and one guy said that Good Intentions was not only the greatest song on the album, but one of the greatest of all time. And he didn't even like the album that much, which made the praise for the individual track seem even stronger. So the second I got EU, I tore it open and skipped right to Good Intentions. It was a very strange experience.

I hear a couple different words in there, here's my interpretation based off of yours, that's for doing that by the way.
I have no idea what he is saying in that last verse. it sounds like he says devoted in christ but I am definitely wrong. you could be dead on so sorry if I'm full of bullshit.
I'm really enjoying this line from Losin Yo Head:
"If I lived in a mansion I'd probably just sleep on the deck"
QuoteI'm really enjoying this line from Losin Yo Head:

I love that line too. great album. I can picture it being great to go back to in a couple years after a Jim James album and another My Morning Jacket able. it'll age like fine wine. some of the songs are so well crafted it's insane. bow to my masters I shall. monsters of folk delivers.

And Into the Woods.
QuoteI'll give it another listen but right now, really not digging it. :-/ Ah well.
Still the same? I've given it 4 spins now and it is not growing on me. I don't know what it is but much of the production seems to pop ish to me and I'm not finding the depth in the sound that I wanted.
I do find the album lyrically impressive (from what I've deciphered).
It kind of just scoots along and nothing really hits me in the face. More spins today. See what happens. :)
Still the same, yeah. I've listened about six or seven times through and it just hasn't grabbed me. I was really, really looking forward to this record, but it's just leaving me cold. :-/
That said, it's had some tough competition in the listening queue this week...I've also been spinning the new AA Bondy, the new Flaming Lips, and the new Alberta Cross, all of which are fully STELLAR. So maybe it's just disappointing in that it isn't quite measuring up to the others.
I guess the silver lining is that I've convinced myself that Yim must be saving all the good stuff for the next Jacket record ;)
You guys don't like the record yet you've listened to it a combined 11 times! What a couple of masochists you are. ;)

Nah, you know how some records are growers, and just don't hit you immediately? I'm hoping this could be one of those. I'm just trying to give it a fair chance.

I wouldn't be following the tenets of my religion written below then now would I? ;)
I know, several of my all time favorite records didn't exactly blow me away the first time I heard them. The best example being It Still Moves, my first Jacket album. I liked it OK but I wouldn't have sold my first born for it like I would now.

Oh yeah, I am a Cubbies fan after all
QuoteSo is Jim the Sandman or the Brakeman? It's so pretty. :)
I think Jim's the sandman, Conor is the brakeman, and M is just along for the ride.

Yep, same for me. ISM was their only album that I had for the longest time. Always liked it, but it didnt hit me until all of a sudden 2-3 years later. Needless to say, I havent looked back.
Still havent heard the MoF album yet. Will do this weekend. I wont mind if its a grower or hits me like Tyson.
Wow,I really like this album.

I heard "Say Please" on WDET (NPR). today in michigan. pretty cool, the lady seemed to dig them calling them a super band and all that jive. said how she was bummed they weren't playing detroit but hope's they'll be around here soon.
nice to hear the guys on the radio waves.

Every song here has gotten better with time. All of the Jim and Conor songs are pure gold (this may be the album that really gets me into Bright Eyes). M Ward at the beginning had only one or two that I wasn't sure about (Goodway, Slow Down Jo), but now I'm loving those songs too. Easily the album of the year, and up there for me with some of the better Jacket albums.
Pure sweet musical goodness. :)
It really is an adventure for your ears.

When they announced that the album was streaming I decided not to listen to it. I bought it on Sunday (along with Backspacer) but didn't get the chance to listen to it until today. Oh. My. God. I love it sooooo much. Every song is just amazing.

Wassup K man! Have you listened yet? I noticed the same thing on the vinyl. (October 13th.) Bummer.
Phenomenal album. I really like every song on it.
It seems to me that everyone involved really collaborated and fleshed out songs that may have been started by one of the other songwriters, giving it a really unique and interesting style. While you can seemingly pick out who was the mastermind behind many of the songs, the album itself doesn't just sound like a couple of Jim James songs, a couple of Conor Oberst songs and a couple of M. Ward songs jammed together onto an album, which is what I was expecting. As a fan of all three, I was happily expecting this, but the album is definitely a pleasant surprise.
I think my favorite track is Losin Yo Head - partly because it most reminds me of an MMJ song but also just because it sounds like they really cut loose and are having fun on that one.
Great stuff.

i know Ky and ALady have seen it, but did anyone post about the article in SPIN? Full page pic of JJ. It's one of the funniest interviews yet and he mentions writing songs for the Jacket too :D Jim is a cut up! Who knew? Guess we all did.
So none of you said, "Don't touch my song!"
James: No, it was like, "Touch my song. Touch it again. Like that. Touch it like that." (Laughs)
Did you compromise your other projects by bringing in your songs and using them on this record?
James: Not at all. When I wrote the songs that would end up being on this, I was also writing songs for My Morning Jacket. Songs just fall out, and I start putting them in categories. There are songs that come out where I'm instantly like, "this would be ideal for My Morning Jacket." And then there are other ones that are a question mark. Besides the guys in My Morning Jacket are all really ego-less. We've made it a rule that we can all do whatever we want when we're not doing the band."
You're totally going to quit My Mornning Jacket now, aren't you?
Oberst: Make the call.
James: Already did.
Let's get this straight, for the search engines: Jim James has left My Morning Jacket?
James: Yeah, it's already done. There were a lot of tears.
Jim should sing that good on all the MMJ songs.

I got the album this morning...can't stop listening to it...repeat...repeat...repeat. IT SOUNDS SO NICE 8-)
There's a line in Ahead of the Curve that goes "What a scene that has got you sentimental when the night comes, when the knot comes loose". I know it's not a purposeful MMJ reference, but it made me smile. Jim's singing backup during that line too.
Monsters Of Folk on Conan tonight.
Album sounds great! Even though I've never been a Bright Eyes fan I like what Conor brings to this album.

I love the self-refrences throughout the album.
- What you just mentioned
- Basically all of The Sandman, the Brakeman, and Me
- Jim's "monsters" line in Losin' Yo Head
- In Baby Boomer: "We couldn't agree about September, could we agree on Vietnam?" ...is this also referring to the September release date?
- Slow Down Jo possibly being about Jim (see other thread)
I'm really respecting conor a bit more after this album and the recent interviews. hopefully that emo thing was just a phase. no more tears conor, no more tears. smile frowny face, smile. I'll be your friend now... got any drugs?
Jim on bass was sweet/funny to see. such a cool spontaneous thing this band could be.
Fantastic! It took me back to The Traveling Wilburys.I guess tonight Jim was The Monster's Jeff Lynne. ;D The guys were looking sharp as well.

#9 today overall at amazon, right behind abbey road :)
Havent posted my thoughts yet since I got to the party late and didnt hear almost all of the album until the actual day it came out ;D
Dear God and Say Please have really grown on me and were the only songs I heard before yesterday...Both seemed average at first, but I like both a lot now.
Whole Lotta Losin has a Wilbury's/Orbison sound to it. On the first listen I was actually reading the lyrics, and I didnt like the song much, but its already grown on me.
Temazcal is the best song Ive heard all year. I fully agree with everyone who has said Conor's songs are the best on the album, and I dont own any Bright Eyes or anything (I think this album might turn a lot of people on to them, I know Im going to). My next 3 favorite songs on the album very well might be Ahead of the Curve, Map of the World, and Man Named Truth (gave one my ego, gave one my id :o).
Losin Yo Head is awesome. Probably the only song that contends with any of the Oberst songs as my 1 of my favorites. His Master's Voice is probably JJ's best lyrics since some songs on Z.
Magic Marker not feeling at all.
For me, the only disappointing 1 of the 3 was M Ward. SB&Me is the only song of his I like a lot on the album.
Overall Im really digging this, but Magic Marker, Baby Boomer, Goodway, and Slow Down Jo hold it back from being 1 of my few favorites of the year. Its up there though :)

Please please give Slow Down Jo a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th chance. I wanted to hate it when I first heard it but I can't. I wanted to hate it like I wanted to hate Radio Cure by Wilco, but if you just press the headphones tight against your head, or turn up the volume on your stero super loud, you will melt.
The rest you mentioned, I'm pretty "meh" about, especially "goodway" and "magic marker" though Baby Boomer is slowly growing on me more and more

I thought this was interesting:
On the gorgeous opener, "Dear God (Sincerely M.O.F.)", [James] and Mogis (the disc's stars, no question) shape a subtle soul track with harp, synthesizers, and samples drums from "Is There Any Love", a cut from the Numero Group's Good God! collection that's also been lifted by Kid Cudi.
The Good God! compilation is absolutely fantastic; definitely seek it out if you have any love for gospel soul and funk.

Very interesting review. Pitchfork's love/hate relationship with Jim James is endlessly entertaining. Then again, I'm a bit annoyed at Pitchfork's tossing off of the rest of the group. Both may have retained their core sound, but the strides they've taken on this album are definitely apparent (Conor harmonizing and actually for once not overwriting, M Ward rocking out and finding additions to his sound).
I'll no doubt check that compilation out ALady, thank you.
Once again, Pitchfork: MEH
I feel like they're in some sort of battle to out-pretentious Conor.
I appreciate the love for Yim though.

That's correct. The performer is Trevor Dandy, and the song appears on the
Good God! compilation, which is issued by a company called the Numero Group.

If you keep the quote in its context, it's correct; four albums including the She & Him record.
Ward, now Oberst's labelmate, has since released four albums of retro distillations, including Volume One, the debut of his project with actress Zooey Deschanel known as She & Him.
I have to say the Pitchfork review doesn't bother me that much.

The album has grown on me slightly but the love for check yo head is curious to me. I mean, it is the Pop iest song I've ever heard.

"I'm wide awake it's morning" is the only album of conors I can get into. I really dig it a lot, I can't understand why his other stuff is so much more.. emo? his debut as conor oberst was pretty lackluster as well. that one album though, he definitely made some great music on it. same with M.O.F.
I'm sure these critics will say anything now that the internet is diluting any kind of good opinion. marketing and money. fuck the critics, always.
lovin me some monsters of folk right now. good stuff.
I'm two songs into the album, and I'm lovin it so far, more than I thought. I just wanted to post that now in case I hate the rest. :)
Track 3... ARE YOU KIDDING ME? This is GREAT!!! I'm positively giddy right now. That song was fucking cool as hell.
Track 4... OK, here's something not as good. There are things about Conor's singing I like, and things I don't like, but there is excellence in the background. No need to skip this track whatsoever.

Until you really listen to Temezcal and you find you can't get Yim singing "There and then you're gone" echoing in your head for the next 2 days
Based purely on one listen to the whole album I'm distinctly underwhelmed. I always rate songs on my mp3 player and I found myself issuing a lot of 3 stars, some 4 stars, and no 5's.
It got me wondering. These albums where kindred spirits / friends collaborate....how often do they really work?
What are the best examples of collaborations / side projects that produce classic albums?
Mad Season, Temple of the Dog, Gutter Twins were/are really good collaborations I can think of (don't know much about music before the '90's :-[ ).
I listenend to MoF one and a half time and I like it, but I don't think it's a masterpiece or something.

Depending on your tastes and beliefs, Queens of the Stone Age come to mind first, and from there Eagles of Death Metal (at first). QOTSA being the side project from Kyuss until it evolved into its own thing. EODM being a side project of QOTSA into it evolved into its own.
The more important question is what were the only truly great SNL spinoffs? Wayne's World and Coneheads, that's what.
I think what makes the MOF so unique is that (a) it's not really folk, and its not supposed to be folk, (b) it's "pop" music in the classic sense of the word, and (c) the sum is more than its parts, at least in my opinion.

If you change your mind later do you add additional stars? Or once it's a three, you have your mind made up. NO MORE STARS FOR YOU! Like the Star Nazi?
I'm not sure about other albums but I'm not sure that's really relevant. When you listen to it, does it make you feel good, or no?
There really are not that many examples of albums that were created by three singer songwriters. Can anyone name some? The criteria is that there needs to be three or more singer song writers that had at least one significant album prior to the collaboration.
1. Travelling Wilburys

They are both great.

chode, there are actually three proper albums, an EP, an unreleased/rarities record, and a best-of:
On Golden Smog
Down By The Old Mainstream
Weird Tales
Another Fine Day
Blood On The Slacks
Stay Golden, SmogI'd also add the New Pornographers to the list.

I figure Broken Social Scene has to have at least 3/19ths of their band as respected singer songwriters, right?
I'm not saying they don't, but do the New Pornographers have three people that sing, write and all had albums prior to their formation?
I need evidence to qualify of any submission.

Aw, yeah, good call on Big Star. Dave Pirner and Dan Murphy from Soul Asylum, too.
And good call on BSS as well!
New Pornographers, definitely. Neko Case, Carl Newman, and Dan Bejar all had records out (with Maow/Zumpano/Destroyer, respectively) prior to the Pornographers, though they were probably more successful post-Pornographers.
BH, I really like
Down By The Old Mainstream, though
Weird Tales is a pretty good place to start too.
Thanks for indulging my geek-out on the Smog, y'all ;D
I'm loving this album. The voices at the end of His Masters Voice sound like "throat singing." I've been to this yoga/meditation/chanting/music event and they do a lot of it there.

Alright, ignore what I said about Slow Down Jo...I like it a good bit now, and it sort of hits home since I just turned 25 and am living a kinda fast life. Maybe i'll take heed. Dear God and Say Please have grown into 2 favorites off the album after not liking them much on first listen. This album has a few growers IMO.
Goodway is okay, but I can live with it as what it is - a little intermission between awesomeness.
Baby Boomer and Magic Marker I dont think I'll ever enjoy..I like the musical aesthetic, but for me the lyrics just come off as mindblowingly cheesy and dumb.

Yeah, first thing I did on wednesday was look up what a Temazcal was..same with Ovnis, spanish for UFO ;D
That song is just incredible. That guitar line just sinks into your head, and the rest of the song rolls on like a hypnotic, hallucinogenic dream through the history of the world.
I think the backup singing, mainly JJ, add more to this song than the backup vocals on any other track as well.
I didnt notice this today, but Losin' Yo Head sounds like it could be a Warren Zevon song almost, especially lyrically, but even the melody.
Just kind of randomly popped into my head today when I wasnt even listening to it....anyone else notice this or hear what Im saying?
I am sooo digging this album. It is much better than I thought it would be. I'm super excited to see them in Oakland next month!
Now I need to go revisit my Golden Smog CDs. [smiley=beer.gif]
Really, really digging this album, given it a few days to sink in and it has really grown on me. Can't stop going back to Temazcal and Man Named Truth, great songs. Jim's backing vocals on Temazcal are something special.
I just got the vinyl in the mail today. It comes with a download code that says it's good for the full album and one new unreleased track, but it didn't have any extra songs when I downloaded it. Does anyone know where to get the bonus track?
I just wished I liked Oberst I find myself skipping to the parts where Jim and M. Ward sing.

I'm no star nazi! I am more than prepared to add a star, or indeed take one away, on further listening. That's why I said it was based on one listen only. Maybe now is a time for a revisit.
It may be nerdy but the star rating system for me serves another purpose. When I make mix cd's for other people I only ever use songs that are 4 or 5 stars.
My main disappointment with this album is that there were no 5's for me on first listen. Maybe that'll change.
Sorry, in answer to your other question. Some of the songs make me feel good, others I find quite boring, and one or two even a bit pretentious. As a whole the album doesn't excite me.
As an example, when I usually buy an album and it does make me feel good I'll play it over and over again for a good few weeks.
With this one I played it, took it out, and wondered if I'd play it again anytime soon.
QuoteI just wished I liked Oberst I find myself skipping to the parts where Jim and M. Ward sing.
If youre just skipping when he's singing a verse, or even half a verse, youre in Oberst denial.
If youre skipping the songs that he wrote and primarily sings, youre missing a lot of the best songs on the album
I am a 42 year old Deadhead. In May 08 I caught this band on SNL. I was intrigued. While awaiting the June release of Evil Urges, I picked up one, then two, then all their albums. I downloaded dozens and dozens of bootlegs. I caught them in Boston, deemed by some a lackluster show, but- god damn!- it was awesome. I now hold many gigs of video and shows, got Acoustic Chorale on eBay, burned Rockpalast DVDs for friends, and deem MMJ the best music experience I've had since tripping with Jerry in the last decade of his life.
Monsters of Folk soothes an ache for more from Yim and MMJ. I dusted off a copy of M. Ward's Hold Time and am impressed. I can't bring myself to get into Oberst, but his work on MoF is fantastic. Some of my friends can't get into all this, but more for me!
I posted that I had a ticket for the Boston MoF show, but it looks like I'm takin' my mom! I'm surprisingly psyched to have her along. The show is on her 65th birthday. If you're there, we need to sing "Happy Birthday" to her, hopeully with the boys kickin' in (just kidding?).
Sorry for the rant, I'm a little high, but I've listened to MoF a dozen times in the last two weeks and am so very happy to have it. For all the mini-reviews and dissections in the last 26 pages, its just beautiful fun exceptional music.
I know this is an MMJ forum, and appreciate those with encylopedic history and experience with their music. I'm only in it a year and a half now, and I'm catching up. I've seen most of the performers who were at Woodstock, Floyd, Gilmour, and Waters, Neil, The Allman Bros., the Dead (pre- and post-Jerry), Traffic, Clapton, Dylan, Hot Tuna, SRV, John Hammond, Buddy Guy, etc. MMJ and, I imagine, MoF, are in my top 5. That says a lot!
Again, forgive the ramble. Would love some feedback. See ya in Boston!

Indie Stars Become 'Monsters Of Folk'
All Things Considered
by Will Hermes
September 25, 2009 - Supergroups have a long tradition in popular music. Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson once joined forces as The Highwaymen. There were the Fania All-Stars, The Four Tenors and Audioslave. Recently, a group of established indie-rock musicians decided to partake in this tradition. They cheekily call themselves Monsters of Folk, and they've just released their debut album.
As a rule, I'm not a fan of supergroups; they usually water down individual visions without nailing down a collective one, and most pop stars aren't so good at sharing the spotlight. But when I heard that Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis of Bright Eyes, Jim James of My Morning Jacket and solo artist M. Ward were teaming up, I thought, "OK, I love their work separately. With any luck it'll be, maybe, a Traveling Wilburys." To my surprise, these guys are in Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young territory.
OK, maybe Monsters of Folk's members are more disaffected than Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and perhaps a little less polished. But like many of the year's outstanding indie-rock records — by Grizzly Bear, Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors — the warmth and power of vocal harmonies are central to the Monsters of Folk record. And not in any single way: The men are folkies on one song, rockers on another. In "Dear God," they even do a halfway decent impression of The Impressions.
Beyond the singing, the group has three of rock's best songwriters working at the top of their game. Some songs have one man's imprint, like "Sandman, the Brakeman and Me" with lead vocals by M. Ward. Other songs seem like real collaborative efforts, and they work a few thematic threads. One is the idea of God, and another related theme is war.
Monsters of Folk might be addressing big themes, but there's little certainty in the band's lyrics. In that way, it feels less like a supergroup and more like, I don't know, a therapy group — although far more musical than any of the ones I've been in.
also just saw this: (sorry if this repetitive, also)

I love this:
My Morning Jacket has been so rewarding, and challenging, to follow because Jim James clearly has little interest in repeating himself as a singer or a songwriter. Across a half dozen albums, he's indulged in dark blues, falsetto-led funk, and reverb-heavy psychedelica with equal conviction. Morning Jacket's songs leave you wondering whether they were written and recorded in 1966 or 2009, but not in a nostalgic or retro way. Their research into slinky psychedelic folk has led to an arms race with Wilco.
Great reads Penny....thanks! :)

How come Mike is the only one he doesn't draw with an ugly, distorted face? Regardless, it's cool.

its true- its not the nicest looking piece of art- I don't love the look of it. But its a cool idea plus its about MOF so you can't go wrong.
QuoteQuoteQuoteBased purely on one listen to the whole album I'm distinctly underwhelmed.
If you change your mind later do you add additional stars? Or once it's a three, you have your mind made up. NO MORE STARS FOR YOU! Like the Star Nazi?
I'm not sure about other albums but I'm not sure that's really relevant. When you listen to it, does it make you feel good, or no?
There really are not that many examples of albums that were created by three singer songwriters. Can anyone name some? The criteria is that there needs to be three or more singer song writers that had at least one significant album prior to the collaboration.
1. Travelling Wilburys
2. Monsters of Folk
3. Broken Social Scene (kevin Drew, Brendon Canning, Fiest, Emily Hains of Metric, dudes from Do Make Say Think, people from Stars...like everyone from Canada pretty much.)
4. CSNY (Crosby of The Byrds, Stills of Buffalo Springfield, Nash of The Hollies, Young of B. Spring)
5. The Highway Men (Cash, Willie, Jennings, Kris)
6. Temple Of The Dog (I guess it's just Cornell and Vedder on vocals right?)
7. Blind Faith (Clapton, Winwood, Grech of Traffic)
8. Child Rebel Solider (Lupe, Kanye and Pherell)!!!!
but your right, there aren't that many "great" super groups. Monsters of Folk is hands down my favorite of the bunch so far - but I also have an extreme bias for high falsetto's and great song writing.
Temple of the Dog is out. Vedder only guests on one song, and that's only two singer/songwriters anyway.
Broken Social Scene is basically Kevin Drew and Brendon Canning, and Drew didn't have any significant release prior to forming BSS while Canning had a band called Hhead. I'm not familiar but maybe they were big once. Either way I don't think they apply hear.
I think only Winwood and Clapton wrote the songs and sang the on Blind Faith album, correct me if I'm wrong.
I think we should wait until Child Rebel Soldier actually releases and album before we put them on the list.
However CSNY and The Highway Men are excellent additions.
Also, being great is not even a requirement. I'm just looking for three singer songwriters with some sort of significant previous material.
1. Monsters of Folk
2. Traveling Wilburys
3. The Highway Men
4. CSNY
Re BSS, what about Andrew Whiteman and Leslie Feist? They both had other bands/solo projects before BSS, didn't they?
Quote
I love this:
My Morning Jacket has been so rewarding, and challenging, to follow because Jim James clearly has little interest in repeating himself as a singer or a songwriter. Across a half dozen albums, he's indulged in dark blues, falsetto-led funk, and reverb-heavy psychedelica with equal conviction. Morning Jacket's songs leave you wondering whether they were written and recorded in 1966 or 2009, but not in a nostalgic or retro way. Their research into slinky psychedelic folk has led to an arms race with Wilco.
Penny, I love this too. One of my favorite aspects of the Jacket is the way they keep reinventing their sound. It's so fascinating...it's like they're making us a mix tape of what they're digging at the moment, reinterpreted and reinvented to make it their own.
QuoteRe BSS, what about Andrew Whiteman and Leslie Feist? They both had other bands/solo projects before BSS, didn't they?
But are they really part of that band? Do they write? I guess BBS just kind of confuses me but with the amount of great names that have played with them, I'll add them. ;)
1. Monsters of Folk
2. Traveling Wilburys
3. The Highway Men
4. CSNY
5. Broken Social Scene

Ginger Baker wrote, but didn't sing, Do What You Like - if you want to count that (I wouldn't). He did write and "sing" Pressed Rat and Warthog for Cream...;)

You know, that's a good question...I don't know how the writing credits are split. I'll do a little research on it ;)
I dig all the "boppin" "stoppin" and all that in Losin Yo Head.

It says it's in it's second week and that it debuted at #143. Not sure why that is since this is the first chart it's eligible for after a 9-22 release.
Any idea on how many albums sold?
Im guessing like 30-35k
Got my vinyl today. What a beautiful package.
What a great fuckin' collaboration this is.
Thanks guys for putting together such wonderful music to fill the hearts of fans.
All I can say is you ain't heard it yet till you heard it on wax. :)
I was waiting to comment till the postlady showed up.
A million thanks for thinking of the fans again.
I just noticed under the lryics In the little booklet that on songs like dear god and whole lotta losin where there are obviously electric drums it says drum programing so on songs where jim is listed for just drums, is that how they make it sound?? Cuz that sounds like something that would be very interesting to see!! :D

Did you preorder it, Kory? I'm still waiting to pick mine up as well but I didn't preorder. Maybe I should've though, the MoF website says they're out of stock.
I was at the record store this morning (Reckless, Chicago loop) and didn't see it either.
Yet to get mine on vinyl as well. :-/

yea, I wanna buy it locally as I didn't preorder but thinking of just buying it from amazon so I can get a copy... weird how it seems to be getting pushed out of the local stores.
I'll also mention that I was behind John Yarmuth (ky congressman) yesterday and he was buying the MOF cd... that would have been a great picture and I bet he's got some sweet tunes stuck in his head at work this morning!

I listened to this record on the way to Charleston and on the way back this weekend. It's so much better than I was even hoping for. I'm actually really, really falling in love with Conor at this point. I love his self titled album and his songs on here remind me of that record. His lyrics on Dear God pretty much slay the song. I love the idea of the song and don't get me wrong Jim and M. do a great job but then Conor........
Dear god, I wish that I could touch you
How strange sometimes I feel I almost do
And then I'm back behind the glass again
Oh god what keeps you out it keeps me in
He writes great lyrics, PERIOD

Now some songs are pretty clear all the lyrics were written by one of them, but other songs I was unsure.
So did each of them write the lyrics they actually sing, no matter what song, or does it vary? Not sure...That was one thing I was hoping the liner notes gave credit for, but they didnt

I read somewhere that they almost always wrote what they sang.
i think you can tell who wrote which song... conor is very specific and vivid w/his lyrics, his images, his phrasing; i think you can also tell JJ songs, i don't think they collaborated too much on lyrics, i would think only if they were stuck in a spot?
that's what I meant though, no matter who wrote the song, I got the impression that they wrote their own lyrics to the other guys songs.

Yeah, I was really hoping that the vinyl liner notes would clear some stuff up but they don't. I'm thinking they write their own stuff when they share verses, I'm just still wondering about Magick Marker, I have a feeling that's an Aaron song, I had that impression coming away from the Rud and it just doesn't exactly sound like Jim. Great song though.
P.S.

Do you have the Gentlemen's Pact EP?
his new solo album is "Grrrrrrrreat!" and also his album with the Mystic Vally Band (awesome name for a band btw) is a real good hoot as well. I've always loved Conor, but love him even more now in his more mature age. I really felt like I grew up with him...it was kinda fun.

has anyone seen the new article in rolling stone w/Madonna on the cover? triple mention! 1 page interview, 1 blip at the bottom about the George Harrison tribute, and in the review section "Buy These Now" a shout out to MOF. :) :)
I'm glad someone mentioned the thrice-mentioned YY/MoF/MMJ articles in RollingStone. I was gonna post a link to the articles, but they're not available online. Nor could I scan and post here (or maybe I could; I'm just lazy lately). MoF is getting solid coverage and positive reviews left and right. I'm getting very psyched for Boston on Nov. 3, though I just found out the wife might be in Albany all week. What to do with the three kids? Leave 'em in the car, the hotel, sneak 'em into the Orpheum under a trenchcoat? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

It's mostly wordless but I think for the last sound, he's saying "stop".

Why are the signatures upside-down in reference to the pick guard? Is that so you can admire them if you choose to actually play the guitar?

The IFC website said the "Say Please" video would be on around 10:26 pm Eastern. Acutally came on around 10:23 pm. Interesting video. Kinda silly, but if it helps get the music out to the random public, that's cool.
Anyone have a sense as to MoF popularity outside this cult of ours? I note it was the number one album in college radio, according to Rolling Stone, for a few weeks. Dropped to number two in the recent issue. And the wife saw MoF for sale at Target today, "on sale" for $9.99.
Saw the Monsters last Saturday in The Hague. Very, very good, unforgetable show :D. Never seen a band having so much fun on stage (especially Conor was jumping all around the place). Show lasted for 2,5 hours and they played 5 or 6 MMJ songs (Bermudia Highway, At Dawn, Look At You, Smokin from Shootin from what I remember). It was really great. They had a 5th Monster as well, Will Johnson, who played the drums. He sang 2 songs as well, he has a great bluesy voice. Yim Yames played a lot on the bass. Dear God was really awesome, unbelieveable! Loved every moment of it, what a show it was! 8-)

I'd have to do at least three, and they could change at any time, but I think right now I find myself singing (around the house, when not listening to the albums, tho it is assumed and a reality that if music is playing, I'm singing out loud, very loud):
- The Right Place
- The Sandman, the Brakeman and Me
- Temezcul
Ask me in an hour and the list might change

Jim's backing vocals on this track...holy smokes.

I'm so late to the game and only heard the MOF album a month ago, but I listen daily as I'm completely OBSESSED with the darned thing!
:cheesy:
How fun - I remember being a month into it - it was all I listened to for awhile. I sure wish they would tour again - it was fantastic.
My top 3 - Say Please, Temazcal, Losin yo head, Masters Voice. I know that is 4.
I pretty much love all of the MOF songs on this album although it took a while to warm up to some.
His Mater's Voice is just out of this world emotional, however.
It has brought me to tears on several occasions.
One was when Jim busted this out as his first song (you may recall that it was the closer on the MOF tour as it is on the album) at the Newport Folk Festival in 2010. You could hear a pin drop. I posted a video of it on youtube although the quality is not that great.
This is one of the best top to bottom albums in my collection.
This album has definitely stood the test of time as one of the best. On any given day, I can't say whose songs I like best, it switches. Hope there's a second at some point.
My buddy and I just went down to his basement the other night and listened to the vinyl. Just amazing still three years later. We both love the lyrics to The Right Place (especially the piano keys line followed by piano keys). Temezcal just still gives me chills everytime (both versions).

Agreed, the lyrics to The Right Place are amazing! Love this version:

Both Temezcals are great, but I kinda prefer the JJ version of Sandman, Breakman and Me over the album version... (but I love you too M. Ward!)
"Oberst even spent six months writing a script for a sci-fi musical starring the Monsters of Folk, his project with M. Ward and James, 'about how the Internet is destroying humanity,' but the project stalled. Oberst jokes that he prepared for the role anyway. 'I was supposed to be older, so I aged,' he deadpans. 'I gained weight. I go the extra mile, like Christian Bale.'"

I knocked the dust off this record the other day and gave it a listen and man I'd forgotten home much I enjoy this album. Curious if anyone has heard any rumors or rumblings about a reunion tour or second album? Probably wishful thinking but I'd love more MoF content/shows!
We love the MOF album and really enjoyed the show we saw in Louisville, but I've always thought it was a one and done deal mostly because how the hell do you top what they've already done?
I saw the Oakland fox show. So good! I'd be happy if they just reissue the album on vinyl again. It's impossible to find for a reasonable price
I also thought it was one and done, but more so because it was meh like the overwhelming majority of supergroup projects. If there was good enough energy I think they would've come back for more.
