Okay, so I decided to just put the files up on rapidshare rather than messing with a website.  The links will stay good until no one downloads the file for 30 days, so the links should be alive for a while.

Those who are willing to help could post the files through other sites or repost the files when the links go bad.  Let me know if anything's wrong with the links or the files. or if you have a song I don't.  Or a better version than the one I posted.

Thanks to everyone who helped get this thing together and contributed to the compilation.  Much love and thanks to the best band in the world.  Thanks to management for letting us do this.

Looks like I'll be downloading all day long... Thanks for tossing these up, Dylan - and big thanks to everyone who made this possible!

As I'm going down the list downloading, 3 Speed and Be Here To Love Me seem to be invalid - can someone check and make sure they don't work?

I'll report more, if necesarry.

Edit: just saw I have to wait 71 minutes now. That's reasonable.

I had this problem too, I think it resets once a day or every 24hrs or something & you can go again without having to wait so long  :)

Quote@ Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You (Dylan)
Hey aMD, this one was played at the Randolph Street Festival June 18, 2005
http://www.archive.org/details/mmj2005-06-18
The version that I have has Tonight & Off the Record as one track. Hope this helps somehow  :)
Title: Re: MMJ Covers Compilation
Post by: aMD on Jul 30, 2006, 11:02 AM
not a problem. This was a labor of love, I assure you.

I really enjoy the Eels cover as.  Has anyone checked out you're a big girl now?  it's a personal favorite. Hot Burrito #1 is stunning.  They're all worth checking out!

As far as rapidshare goes, you're allowed to download one song every hour or so without having to pay for access.  So you could download up to 20 songs or so a day if you're dedicated.

Quotenot a problem. This was a labor of love, I assure you.
.

Many, many thanks. Superlative effort.  Amazed at how much can happen when one loses computer access for about 10 days.  Quite stunned actually when I saw this.

I can't download these  for at least a week and it will drive me nuts.  I didn't disappear from this endeavor intentionally.  While I was at my conference our IT manager decided to fix my ailing computer by reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling windows.  This did not fix the bum machine (it keeps losing packets, and all network cables, cards etc. have been diagnosed), and now the solution is to order in a new computer.

Meanwhile, I have only a 28.8 dial up at home and consequently don't usually even try to browse the web from home, much less download.  But I hope to get the whole list burned to CD so I can transport and back this up in case the PC croaks again.

Again, thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Couple quick bits:

You have Cripple Creek/Blue Moon linked twice.  Looks like it's the same song?

I have a solo Tyrone that is dated 3-15-2002 from Texas.  Not sure if it's the same one but I will let you know after I check.

Thanks.  I editied in the info for Tyrone and Suspicious Minds.  I put the Cripple Creek/Blue Moon link on there twice on purpose so that I could list both songs.  Sorry if that's confusing, but it's two covers on one track and that was the best thing I could think to do.

That is a good idea.  I hope I am not being annoying.  I just have spent a lot of time organizing these things for some CD's I am making so I just thought I would point out a few things.  I am having such a great time with all of these gems.  One other thing I figured out last night.  The other Tyrone is not actually a live song.  It is a crappy mono copy of the Early Recordings Track with the first minute or so chopped off the front end.  It should be deleted entirely.

Internet says Dark End of the Street was written by Percy Sledge.  I don't know if this is accurate or who that is but anyway...

Percy Sledge was one of the many artists to record Dark End Of The Street. It was written by Dan Penn & Chips Moman like aMD said.

You're not being annoying, I want this thing to be as accurate as possible.  I thought they put a different version of Tyrone on Early Recordings. oops.  Well, I could probably find a better version anyway.  Thanks for pointing that out.

I am finally starting to listen to some of these gems and I had a question.  I really like the version of Lionel Richie's Easy.  I am not that familiar with the original.  It seems like at the end of the song, it changes tempo and goes in to something else.  Is this still Easy?  Maybe I am crazy but I just thought I would ask if anybody else has listened to it yet or maybe there is a Richie Head out there somewhere that can help me out.

No, I have no idea!  That's weird.  I don't know who would have complained, I had permission from every necessary party.  Maybe it's something with the website.  Well, maybe I'll post it using a different service.  Or someone who already downloaded it could do it.  How weird!

I dunno if anyone has caught this yet, I may have overlooked it, but evidently there are TWO versions of Black Sabbath...

A couple of months back, Bermuda sent me a split-version, taped in Amsterdam(?)... the date was stamped identically to this the one Dylan is offering here, but they're not the same.
Title: Re: MMJ Covers Compilation
Post by: BH on Aug 04, 2006, 10:58 PM
That's true Ewok.  However, after listening to mine and the one AMD put up, I would say the sound is better on the AMD version and it's all one track so I nobody is missing anything.  Would you agree?  I havn't listened to them back to back yet but I don't think they are any different.  So sound wins outright.

The one Dylan has provided is without a doubt the superior one... Agreed.

Again, thanks for the sleuthiness.  So are you all saying that the track info for Black Sabbath should be: November 08, 2002 - Paradiso (kleine zaal), Amsterdam, The Netherlands.  I actually have multiple versions of this song, but if you all think this one's good I'll keep it and change the info.

AMD;

No, what I meant was they are pretty much the same arangement but they are definately two different shows  The one you put up and the one from the Paradiso.  The one you put up is better than the one I have from the Paradiso.

I also have another I still miss someone and another Suspicious Minds.  I am not sure yet if mine are any better/different but I will get back to you.

by the way, thanks deanna for uploading the whole collection on zips, probably an easier way to do it anyway.  Once these final tracks come in maybe we (as in you or someone else smarter than me) can throw together a torrent.

Well I finally put my 4 disc set of covers together and I wanted to share with you how it turned out.  I am not sure you really care but I spent a lot of time on it and I wanted someone to see!  It took a lot of time to come up with the format and have it all work out and not miss anything etc. etc. so it could save you time if you are planning to do something similar.  Anyway, if anyone wants these pics let me know.

A couple of notes.  I left the 3 Christmas songs from the WFPK radio session off of this compilation.  I thought they went better as they were on a seperate disc with the whole session.

I also left off the following 6 songs because they are studio quality and I am going to put them on another disc that I will call "Chapter 3" along with a bunch of other B-sides and rarities that I want on one disc so I don't have to pull out my Run Thru single just to hear breathin' , etc.

*Behind That Locked Door (George Harrison) The Mother Lodge
*Blue Moon(Hart, Rogers) Louisville Lovers
*Girl From The North Country (Bob Dylan) JJ/Ward/Oberst
*Mother (Pink Floyd) Darla
*The Same In Any Language (Wilson/Crowe) Elizabethtown
*Wear Your Love Like Heaven (Donovan) Donavan Tribute

So here they are:

Disc One

Disc Two

Disc Three

Disc Four (My favorite pic)

Lettering is much sharper in the originals.  (Easier to read)

No problem, I'm just glad people are still happening upon it and enjoying it.  You're right about the Dylan covers, they're all stunning.  I've suggested in the past that he do a Dylan tribute along with the planned Harrison album but in the meantime we can just make our own and pretend.  btw, Jim also did a cover of I'll B Yr BB 2nite (that's his spelling) but I couldn't track it down. Title: Re: MMJ Covers Compilation
Post by: aMD on Jan 07, 2007, 09:00 AM
QuoteWhat is the story with the unreleased George Harrison album?

As far as I know, it was recorded around 2000-1.  They were going to try to release it, but complications surrounding George's death and the copyrights to his old songs stopped it from being released.  There was even talk that they would try to release it in Canada just to get it out there.  But that never happened, it remains unreleased and only a handful of those close to the band have a copy of the recordings.  According to Jim, they still plan to release it someday and may even rerecord some of the songs or record some new songs altogether.  Here is the tracklist to the original verision:
(1) behind that locked door (relased elsewhere and available on the comp)
(2) long, long, long
(3) if not for you
(4) love you to
(5) my sweet lord
(6) let it roll
(7) all things pass

In case you missed it else where, Kory uploaded the new covers from the Reg's Jim solo show in Alabama.  The bitrate is pretty low because these are rips from video clips taken from youtube, hopefully we'll get a better copy of this show on down the trail.

These new tracks are That's Heaven to Me by Sam Cooke and Nobody Knows by Jimmie Rodgers.  Note that Jim also played Mississippi River Blues at this show although it is not included here. Thanks for the video clips Remmi and for the legwork Kory.

That would be great for me.  I am starting to lose track of what came after the orginal.  I could figure it out obviously, but if we could make a list of things that have been done since that would be cool.  I guess I could do that.  Would it start with the covers from NYE or were there any before that?   Also, what would be the "old" ones that we have found since then, like "Be Your Baby Tonight" etc.

Covers from?

NYE
Prom Night
The Rud
Berkely and New Orleans solo shows?
Dylan shows??

After some discussion in another thread I'm adding these three tracks.  They all come from a guest spot Jim did with Yo La Tengo.  He is the main singer in all three so it seemed like they should be included even though it was a YLT show and not MMJ.  Forget the particulars and enjoy:

Hard Luck Woman (Kiss)
12-06-07 Maxwell's Hoboken, NJ
Jim James and Yo La Tengo

Secret Agent Man (Rivers)
12-06-07 Maxwell's Hoboken, NJ
Jim James and Yo La Tengo

Solitary Man (Diamond)

The format of these tracks needs to be seriously overhauled for the sake of organization. I like the idea of releasing them in zips, but I've ended up with duplicates of almost every song, now... doh!

Maybe these should be zipped with an iTunes playlist file, in the future?

I think an index similar to the A-to-Z discography would be a good idea, as well - especially if each individual song were linked to a source to D/L (if available).

Suggestion for an iTunes format...

Name:
All Night Long (Lionel Richie)

Album Artist:

Album:

thanks for the suggestions, brad. I'm not sure what you mean by the index though.  there is an index and it's pretty detailed.  I will tell you that I am still hoping to create a website for the covers comp in which the songs could be individually downloaded directly from the website.  That's probably going to be a summer project of mine.

           Various Artists:
Club Nisei

Description      Originally a fellowship club at a local high school, Club Nisei were the first Hawaiian-Japanese orchestra to begin performing in the post-World War II era - circa 1946. From humble beginnings, they began a meteoric rise - eventually becoming one of the top orchestras in the Territory of Hawai'i.

Months of detailed research and first-person interviews augmented by rare, previously unpublished photos resulted in liner notes that tell the story of their extraordinary leader ... Robert "Bob" Kojima - mentor, visionary, pioneer - working man, family man. It was Bob Kojima that founded the talent-incubating Club Nisei; he coined the name and lead the headlong charge into music.

In addition, the "liners" chronicle the history of the Japanese in Hawai'i placing Club Nisei's accomplishments in proper historical context.

Awesome collection.  I noticed a few that you are missing.  Check out 6-13-2008 Which stage @ Bonnaroo.  The boys played several covers including Hit it and Quit it, Hot Fun in the Summertime, Home Sweet Home, Get down on it, and a few more. I was actually there and it is the best live show I have ever seen (and I've been to A LOT of shows.)  You can find it at archive.org.

That was the one song on the list Jim asked me if I had.  He says he doesn't remember doing it and it may be the only one he might not want me to share.  When I told him Ger Potze said it was performed at Twice Told Coffee in 99 but not recorded he was relieved.  There are probably only 15 or so people who heard him do it.

Just the fact that 15 people watched MMJ play at Twice Told Cafe is nuts.

Holy shits, just re-listened to the cover of Nick Drake's "Northern Sky," the cover of Donovan's "Wear Your Love Like Heaven," and "Dark End of the Street"............ sweet jeebiss...... forgot I'd stuck them on the end of a copy I made of YY's George Harrison tribute, what a sweet surprise after such a solid cover album!!!  I kind of want to approach Jim to recommend making a second G. Harrison tribute album.... like a full 25-track album  :-X

My top requests:  (in no particular order)
-Beware of Darkness
-I Live For You
-Art of Dying
-Everybody, Nobody
-Far East Man
-Run of the Mill
-Let It Down

(And maybe the last 1/3 of the album could be a Donovan Tribute, featuring Hurdy Gurdy Man, Sunshine Superman, London Town, Catch the Wind, Barabajagal, (here's where I'm realizing he should probably just do an entire separate Donovan cover album.....)  Happiness Runs, Riki Tiki Tavi, Hey Gyp (Dig the SLowness), and To Sing For You

I loooooove whatever interview it was where Jim talks about Hurdy Gurdy Man.... I believe that interview has gone missing from the interweb, as well as a video of Jim & Donovan in '04???

But there is this.....................   :D  ***Watch at 1:13 for a YY sighting!!!  And a couple more brief seconds of him appearing on-stage

Cosmically Conscious- Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, bettye Lavette, Sheryl Crow (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wz8ZNtoCHrI#)

So I'm a huge George Harrison fan and love that MMJ covers so many songs.

Can someone tell me more info on the "unreleased George Harrison album?"

Are these songs played at shows? Are there ANY available recordings?

You are aware of Jim's solo album of George Harrison covers, recorded some time ago (2001), under the Yim Yames moniker and released in 2009?

thanks. I'm pretty noobish in regard to this band. Is there a short history class I could take?

I heard a bit about the Yim Yames moniker for a bit, but never investigated when it happened or why.

So on the list from the OP, it means that certain songs were recorded that night but never released on that "album"?

Also, he should've done a Wilbury song. Those are my faves.

No but I can dig for it and upload sometime soon.....

When you want something done...

I've added a few covers to the list and made a covers compilation that started with this thread a few years ago.  I didn't add cover tunes from the OBH tapings, because you should already have those.  There might be a few mistakes, and if you think there are glaring omissions, let me know.

Here is a screen shot of the folder's contents, followed by a download link (almost 1GB).

I'll post that updated covers collection as soon as its uploaded.
