Okay, so I decided to just put the files up on rapidshare rather than messing with a website. The links will stay good until no one downloads the file for 30 days, so the links should be alive for a while.
Those who are willing to help could post the files through other sites or repost the files when the links go bad. Let me know if anything's wrong with the links or the files. or if you have a song I don't. Or a better version than the one I posted.
Thanks to everyone who helped get this thing together and contributed to the compilation. Much love and thanks to the best band in the world. Thanks to management for letting us do this.
Unbelievable. Well done. Thank you. It's amazing how far one will go when inspired by pure passion.
Looks like I'll be downloading all day long... Thanks for tossing these up, Dylan - and big thanks to everyone who made this possible!
As I'm going down the list downloading, 3 Speed and Be Here To Love Me seem to be invalid - can someone check and make sure they don't work?
I'll report more, if necesarry.
You Rock! Nice Work.
WELL DONE!!!
Many thanks to you and all who were involved in this project!!!
Thanks amd. Seriously, You Da MAN!
Thanks so much, this is one of the greatest things ever.... ever
Great Job aMD - thanks a million! ;)
thanks a ton aMD
been wanting everybody's talkin for a looong time
BIG THANK YOU.
This is a lot of work and I salute you and all who've helped.
If any reuploading needs to happen, I'll gladly help out.
So what's everyone downloading first?
So far I've got How The Gods Kill (I used to love Danzig - this is an excellent cover!) Dark End Of The Street (Has Corey seen this yet?!!) & Easy...
Thanks again aMD :)
That eels cover is really great. I downloaded it first. I hadn't heard of the band before but it's a really cool song.
I can't believe that I'm the first person to download some of these!
Just grabbed Man In Me (with the Lebowski Singers) & Love Will Tear Us Apart, this is like Christmas!!! :)
Wow!
Damn, my download limit for free users has expired. Any way around this?
Edit: just saw I have to wait 71 minutes now. That's reasonable.

I had this problem too, I think it resets once a day or every 24hrs or something & you can go again without having to wait so long :)

Hey aMD, this one was played at the Randolph Street Festival June 18, 2005
http://www.archive.org/details/mmj2005-06-18
The version that I have has Tonight & Off the Record as one track. Hope this helps somehow :)
not a problem. This was a labor of love, I assure you.
I really enjoy the Eels cover as. Has anyone checked out you're a big girl now? it's a personal favorite. Hot Burrito #1 is stunning. They're all worth checking out!
As far as rapidshare goes, you're allowed to download one song every hour or so without having to pay for access. So you could download up to 20 songs or so a day if you're dedicated.

Many, many thanks. Superlative effort. Amazed at how much can happen when one loses computer access for about 10 days. Quite stunned actually when I saw this.
I can't download these for at least a week and it will drive me nuts. I didn't disappear from this endeavor intentionally. While I was at my conference our IT manager decided to fix my ailing computer by reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling windows. This did not fix the bum machine (it keeps losing packets, and all network cables, cards etc. have been diagnosed), and now the solution is to order in a new computer.
Meanwhile, I have only a 28.8 dial up at home and consequently don't usually even try to browse the web from home, much less download. But I hope to get the whole list burned to CD so I can transport and back this up in case the PC croaks again.
Again, thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
Couple quick bits:
You have Cripple Creek/Blue Moon linked twice. Looks like it's the same song?
I have a solo Tyrone that is dated 3-15-2002 from Texas. Not sure if it's the same one but I will let you know after I check.
Could the Suspicious Minds be Aug 16th 2002 at the 9:30 club Washington DC?
Solo Tyrone is definately from the Rubber Gloves in Denton, TX 3-15-02. At least that is how mine is labeled and there was a show there on that day.
Very cool. Thanks for the hard work.

Thanks. I editied in the info for Tyrone and Suspicious Minds. I put the Cripple Creek/Blue Moon link on there twice on purpose so that I could list both songs. Sorry if that's confusing, but it's two covers on one track and that was the best thing I could think to do.
That is a good idea. I hope I am not being annoying. I just have spent a lot of time organizing these things for some CD's I am making so I just thought I would point out a few things. I am having such a great time with all of these gems. One other thing I figured out last night. The other Tyrone is not actually a live song. It is a crappy mono copy of the Early Recordings Track with the first minute or so chopped off the front end. It should be deleted entirely.
Internet says Dark End of the Street was written by Percy Sledge. I don't know if this is accurate or who that is but anyway...
QuoteInternet says Dark End of the Street was written by Percy Sledge. I don't know if this is accurate or who that is but anyway...
Percy Sledge was one of the many artists to record Dark End Of The Street. It was written by Dan Penn & Chips Moman like aMD said.

You're not being annoying, I want this thing to be as accurate as possible. I thought they put a different version of Tyrone on Early Recordings. oops. Well, I could probably find a better version anyway. Thanks for pointing that out.
I am finally starting to listen to some of these gems and I had a question. I really like the version of Lionel Richie's Easy. I am not that familiar with the original. It seems like at the end of the song, it changes tempo and goes in to something else. Is this still Easy? Maybe I am crazy but I just thought I would ask if anybody else has listened to it yet or maybe there is a Richie Head out there somewhere that can help me out.

He only played the first verse. I don't know why or what the story is but George Savage may know, I think he attended that one.
nonono, i mean....click the link.
it's been deleted. same with how the gods kill. it says the note is: THIS FILE IS NOT TO BE SHARED!!!
any clue as to why?
No, I have no idea! That's weird. I don't know who would have complained, I had permission from every necessary party. Maybe it's something with the website. Well, maybe I'll post it using a different service. Or someone who already downloaded it could do it. How weird!
I dunno if anyone has caught this yet, I may have overlooked it, but evidently there are TWO versions of Black Sabbath...
A couple of months back, Bermuda sent me a split-version, taped in Amsterdam(?)... the date was stamped identically to this the one Dylan is offering here, but they're not the same.
That's true Ewok. However, after listening to mine and the one AMD put up, I would say the sound is better on the AMD version and it's all one track so I nobody is missing anything. Would you agree? I havn't listened to them back to back yet but I don't think they are any different. So sound wins outright.
The one Dylan has provided is without a doubt the superior one... Agreed.
Again, thanks for the sleuthiness. So are you all saying that the track info for Black Sabbath should be: November 08, 2002 - Paradiso (kleine zaal), Amsterdam, The Netherlands. I actually have multiple versions of this song, but if you all think this one's good I'll keep it and change the info.
AMD;
No, what I meant was they are pretty much the same arangement but they are definately two different shows The one you put up and the one from the Paradiso. The one you put up is better than the one I have from the Paradiso.
I also have another I still miss someone and another Suspicious Minds. I am not sure yet if mine are any better/different but I will get back to you.
Hot Fucking Burrito Bump.
Hey y'all, maybe I'm just a computer moron but does anyone here know how to convert these .m4a files into .mp3 files? I've been searching for a a conversion program for like 3 days, seriously...
itunes
yeah, m4a is an iTunes AAC file. you may just need to download iTunes and convert em to mp3 and then go your merry separate ways. or get addicted to all things apple. your choice, really.
Thanks :)
thats great thanks man.

FYI, Ger contacted me. I am working out a trade for him so our comp will be even more complete soon.

QuoteThis thread just turned a shitty week into a great one.
You're obviously NOT real. Glad to brighten you're fictional week!
btw, I edited the list and added some info that Ger (Magnix) provided me.
Jeez, this is confusing.. i'm already 15-20 dollars down, and i only got about 1/4 of the songs i wanted... And I haven't paypal-ed the guy who did this yet. Isn't there an easier way... someone who was here to acquire all the songs please contact me for a swap or whatever...

you don't have to paypal me, I was going to except donations when I was thinking about making a website to house the comp but that hasn't panned out yet. if you'd like you could send me blanks and postage. if you're interested pm me.
Now that this is bumped and ready for action, I've decided to try and be helpful by uploading the songs as two zip files.
Part one, 3 Speed - La Bamba
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=MXS2SP2G
Part two, Loving Cup - You're A Big Girl Now
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=N6WNNV0R
If I missed any songs, my apologies.
I just uploaded another. It's Jim doing Dark End of the Street Solo. FMed source. Thanks to Ger for the hook up. More to come soon.

by the way, thanks deanna for uploading the whole collection on zips, probably an easier way to do it anyway. Once these final tracks come in maybe we (as in you or someone else smarter than me) can throw together a torrent.
Hey everybody, long time fan, first time poster here. I've been lurking for awhile and couldn't resist sending out a request for any or all of these via a b&p or through a trade. I have no MMJ shows, but quite a few Wilco/Jeff Tweedy/Uncle Tupelo as well as some vintage Springsteen. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Greg

Sweet, Thanks again man. I think I am going to go ahead and make my CD's now. I can't decide if I'm going to put them in alpahbetical order or chronological. I think chronological.
I was wondering, can someone out there, take the white rabbit and get rid of the 5 minutes of nothingness at the beginning. I don't want that big pause in the middle of my cd if I can help it.

You rule my world deanna! Thanks!
Well I finally put my 4 disc set of covers together and I wanted to share with you how it turned out. I am not sure you really care but I spent a lot of time on it and I wanted someone to see! It took a lot of time to come up with the format and have it all work out and not miss anything etc. etc. so it could save you time if you are planning to do something similar. Anyway, if anyone wants these pics let me know.
A couple of notes. I left the 3 Christmas songs from the WFPK radio session off of this compilation. I thought they went better as they were on a seperate disc with the whole session.
I also left off the following 6 songs because they are studio quality and I am going to put them on another disc that I will call "Chapter 3" along with a bunch of other B-sides and rarities that I want on one disc so I don't have to pull out my Run Thru single just to hear breathin' , etc.
*Behind That Locked Door (George Harrison) The Mother Lodge
*Blue Moon(Hart, Rogers) Louisville Lovers
*Girl From The North Country (Bob Dylan) JJ/Ward/Oberst
*Mother (Pink Floyd) Darla

*Wear Your Love Like Heaven (Donovan) Donavan Tribute

First I would like to say that all of you guys fucking rock for putting this together. And of course the band too for making this sweet sound.
Now a question. In La Bamba is Jim singing something about Benicio Del Toro? I swear that is what he is saying. Instead of no soy marinero.
Anyone notice this?
Thanks again everyone.
he's definitely saying benecio del toro. a pretty hilarious version. oh, and your welcome.
Thanks for posting these, I would love some more whole band covers

aMD,
I don't know how I didn't see this earlier but I really would like to thank you a lot for putting these together, truly amazing. I had an eargasm when I listened to Billy #4 then You're A Big Girl Now. Pat Garrett is a film I really love and the greatness of the Dylan soundtrack is obvious.

No problem, I'm just glad people are still happening upon it and enjoying it. You're right about the Dylan covers, they're all stunning. I've suggested in the past that he do a Dylan tribute along with the planned Harrison album but in the meantime we can just make our own and pretend. btw, Jim also did a cover of I'll B Yr BB 2nite (that's his spelling) but I couldn't track it down. Still, not a bad tracklist:
I'll B Yr BB 2nite (missing)
You're a Big Girl Now
If Not for You
Man in Me (2 versions)
Tonight I'll Be Staying Here with You
Billy #4
Girl From the North Country
Okay. The NYE show brought us four new covers to add to the compliation. I've updated the list but wanted to post them here along with a list of other songs that are not in the two zip files so that the entire collection will be available. So, here we go:
All Night Long(Richie)
12-31-06 Fillmore San Francisco, CA

Careless Whisper (Michael)

also missing from zip file(I'll upload these later):
Dark End of the Street (Penn/Oldham)

Jim James solo
http://rapidshare.com/files/9832539/Jim_James_-_Dark_End_Of_The_Street__KEXP_2004-07-15_.mp3.html

I'm On Fire (Springstein)

And here, again, are the two zip files containing most of the collection:

What is the story with the unreleased George Harrison album?
QuoteWhat is the story with the unreleased George Harrison album?
As far as I know, it was recorded around 2000-1. They were going to try to release it, but complications surrounding George's death and the copyrights to his old songs stopped it from being released. There was even talk that they would try to release it in Canada just to get it out there. But that never happened, it remains unreleased and only a handful of those close to the band have a copy of the recordings. According to Jim, they still plan to release it someday and may even rerecord some of the songs or record some new songs altogether. Here is the tracklist to the original verision:
(1) behind that locked door (relased elsewhere and available on the comp)
(2) long, long, long
(3) if not for you
(4) love you to
(5) my sweet lord
(6) let it roll
(7) all things pass
Thats really cool. george is my favorite Beatle and I'd love to have this see the light of day.
"Something" would be a nice addition to the compilation.
I have heard nothing but great reviews about this rocketman cover. anyone have any links? i admit...i'm too lazy to search archive
oh, and bermuda...
the band should have you sell that for them or something. i'd buy that album anytime. amazing amazing work.
Thanks to all who had a hand in putting these downloads together. I am loving all of it.

all thanks goes to Dylan for this. I just did some organizing and threw together some covers form somebody else's great pics! It did take forever but I did it for myself and if someone else can enjoy them, all the better!
would somebody be willing to upload the two zip files onto rapidshare or sendspace? megaupload won't work at all for me, and it hasn't in about two days.
thanks a ton.
In case you missed it else where, Kory uploaded the new covers from the Reg's Jim solo show in Alabama. The bitrate is pretty low because these are rips from video clips taken from youtube, hopefully we'll get a better copy of this show on down the trail.
These new tracks are That's Heaven to Me by Sam Cooke and Nobody Knows by Jimmie Rodgers. Note that Jim also played Mississippi River Blues at this show although it is not included here. Thanks for the video clips Remmi and for the legwork Kory.

thanks for putting this together! I downloaded last night and am enjoying today at the office. this blue moon is a little ridiculous, but very fun.

That would be great for me. I am starting to lose track of what came after the orginal. I could figure it out obviously, but if we could make a list of things that have been done since that would be cool. I guess I could do that. Would it start with the covers from NYE or were there any before that? Also, what would be the "old" ones that we have found since then, like "Be Your Baby Tonight" etc.

After some discussion in another thread I'm adding these three tracks. They all come from a guest spot Jim did with Yo La Tengo. He is the main singer in all three so it seemed like they should be included even though it was a YLT show and not MMJ. Forget the particulars and enjoy:

Thanks.

Thanks friend! Seems to work okay here at the office (uh ohhh!!), so must be something wrong at home. Will try later.
Thanks for the reply. Nice folks here. :)
The format of these tracks needs to be seriously overhauled for the sake of organization. I like the idea of releasing them in zips, but I've ended up with duplicates of almost every song, now... doh!
Maybe these should be zipped with an iTunes playlist file, in the future?
I think an index similar to the A-to-Z discography would be a good idea, as well - especially if each individual song were linked to a source to D/L (if available).
Suggestion for an iTunes format...

thanks for the suggestions, brad. I'm not sure what you mean by the index though. there is an index and it's pretty detailed. I will tell you that I am still hoping to create a website for the covers comp in which the songs could be individually downloaded directly from the website. That's probably going to be a summer project of mine.
Nevermind the index thing, I have no fucking clue what I was talking about.
:-X
wish i would have downloaded these two years ago! awesome.
Ended up back here looking to see when "This Magic Moment" was played and saw that Jim covered Race For The Prize. Does anyone know if there is a recording of this anywhere in circulation? I know what the index says but with this new wave of people, maybe someone will know.
This reminds me, I was sitting there waiting for peeps to arrive at the Heartland in NYC and all of a sudden I hear Jim James version of Suspicious Minds! Out walks my bartender and I give him a look like, "did you put that on?" He just smiled at me. It was a cool little moment. He never played any more MMJ the rest of the night, just that one odd rarity. I thought it was cool.
Wow, this is like Christmas! Thank you! :D
I know A Quick One was already covered, but I have the mp3 from Eddie Vedder and them when they went to Italy. It's part of the bonus on PJ's dvd from their Italian shows. Is this mp3 already out there? Just let me know.
I know it was posted on here around the time the DVD came out. Not sure how "available" it is though.

Yo, looks like I will have to finish this on Monday. As always, I got a little bit over my head and I'm putting together the whole list from my spreadsheet. Then we can cross reference them agains each other.
It might actually work better for you to make a new post. I'll PM you on Monday.
Yeah, I probably will have to make a new post. I think most of the covers will be from bonaroo and tribute shows, but I don't want anything to slip through the cracks.
they kind of covered wonderful tonight, lol Its prehaps the funniest thing I've heard in the last few weeks.
I've really been jonesn' for a little Careless Whisper! I had it on this cpu not to long ago but it's somehow gone... can anyone point me in the right direction??
QuoteOkay I got done with part 3 and made minor updates that Ger pointed out to me almost a year ago, it's been a long year i guess. so here's the complete covers comp as of today. Thanks to Deanna for upping the first two parts. The third part is the update I just added, the tracklist list is in my post above.
Full collection:
Part one, 3 Speed - La Bamba

Dudley -- Part Three has Careless Whisper.
Thanks so much. dling now!!
I have not seen any new songs added for a long time. I ran into this one on a music Blog. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=8G0O2FDM Sam Cooke's "Bring it on Home" I hope this starts this back up because I know there have been plenty of covers MMJ has done recently.
I know I'm slacking on updates but I'm trying to rethink the comp. Hardly anyone knows it's here and half the people who know, don't seem to care. I haven't updated it in over a year and you're the first person to say anything. Well, other than BH who might take over my duties here. Sorry for the lack of updates, but there is close to 6 CDs worth of covers here to tide you over until then.
You know I could really just post the total list of covers. Everything that has been done since your efforts Dylan is either available at archive.org or not available at all I believe, so people can just ad whatever they want on their own. Let me see if I can take a snapshot of my list and post it here as a picture.

Nice! I guess I could just update it. I was thinking about literally starting a new thread every week highlighting one of the covers from the comp. The tracks would get more play but the new threads might get on everyone's nerves.
I'll just update the comp already. I would like to cheat off your list though, BH. You da man! :)
That's better....
Thanks, BH!

I will add that, although it isn't a Sam Cooke song.
Sounds like the Triple J guy used my comp for his research. Sweetpickles. 8-)

the Club Nisei Orchestra
according to the interview.
Sayonara (Japanese Farewell Song)
by Tokie Tamaki & Club Nisei Orchestra 2006
Various Artists:
Club Nisei
Description Originally a fellowship club at a local high school, Club Nisei were the first Hawaiian-Japanese orchestra to begin performing in the post-World War II era - circa 1946. From humble beginnings, they began a meteoric rise - eventually becoming one of the top orchestras in the Territory of Hawai'i.
Months of detailed research and first-person interviews augmented by rare, previously unpublished photos resulted in liner notes that tell the story of their extraordinary leader ... Robert "Bob" Kojima - mentor, visionary, pioneer - working man, family man. It was Bob Kojima that founded the talent-incubating Club Nisei; he coined the name and lead the headlong charge into music.
In addition, the "liners" chronicle the history of the Japanese in Hawai'i placing Club Nisei's accomplishments in proper historical context.

picked that up after listening again.
interesting to see how many times its been covered.
Wow....quite the list. Good work!
i've been a mmj fan for a long, long, long time but haven't really been into the forum thing. HOLY CATS have i been missing out!
thank you, so very much, to everyone who has put this together. your time and dedication are immeasurable but not lost on me. i really could kiss you all.
what i've heard so far has been brilliant!!!! and i have to say that the people on here seem so helpful and very kind.
again - thank you!
Awesome collection. I noticed a few that you are missing. Check out 6-13-2008 Which stage @ Bonnaroo. The boys played several covers including Hit it and Quit it, Hot Fun in the Summertime, Home Sweet Home, Get down on it, and a few more. I was actually there and it is the best live show I have ever seen (and I've been to A LOT of shows.) You can find it at archive.org.
If anyone finds any covers not listed, please email me at matt(at)youaintnopicasso.com and I'll host them

That was the one song on the list Jim asked me if I had. He says he doesn't remember doing it and it may be the only one he might not want me to share. When I told him Ger Potze said it was performed at Twice Told Coffee in 99 but not recorded he was relieved. There are probably only 15 or so people who heard him do it.

Just the fact that 15 people watched MMJ play at Twice Told Cafe is nuts.
Holy shits, just re-listened to the cover of Nick Drake's "Northern Sky," the cover of Donovan's "Wear Your Love Like Heaven," and "Dark End of the Street"............ sweet jeebiss...... forgot I'd stuck them on the end of a copy I made of YY's George Harrison tribute, what a sweet surprise after such a solid cover album!!! I kind of want to approach Jim to recommend making a second G. Harrison tribute album.... like a full 25-track album :-X
My top requests: (in no particular order)
-Beware of Darkness
-I Live For You
-Art of Dying
-Everybody, Nobody
-Far East Man
-Run of the Mill
-Let It Down
(And maybe the last 1/3 of the album could be a Donovan Tribute, featuring Hurdy Gurdy Man, Sunshine Superman, London Town, Catch the Wind, Barabajagal, (here's where I'm realizing he should probably just do an entire separate Donovan cover album.....) Happiness Runs, Riki Tiki Tavi, Hey Gyp (Dig the SLowness), and To Sing For You
I loooooove whatever interview it was where Jim talks about Hurdy Gurdy Man.... I believe that interview has gone missing from the interweb, as well as a video of Jim & Donovan in '04???
But there is this..................... :D ***Watch at 1:13 for a YY sighting!!! And a couple more brief seconds of him appearing on-stage
Cosmically Conscious- Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, bettye Lavette, Sheryl Crow (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wz8ZNtoCHrI#)
i just discovered this thread but becasue megaupload is shutdown i can't listen to this magical list
anyone have these i can get from them?
I have a downloadable list of everything that's not currently on an album available in print.

Thanks for the post Matt. A few there I needed.
Anything on there not on the covers comp Searchin?
Started listening to this covers comp again. Anybody know if there is a full recording of the 09-29-05 show at the enterprise in London? The two songs included are fantastic recordings.
So I'm a huge George Harrison fan and love that MMJ covers so many songs.
Can someone tell me more info on the "unreleased George Harrison album?"
Are these songs played at shows? Are there ANY available recordings?

You are aware of Jim's solo album of George Harrison covers, recorded some time ago (2001), under the Yim Yames moniker and released in 2009?

thanks. I'm pretty noobish in regard to this band. Is there a short history class I could take?
I heard a bit about the Yim Yames moniker for a bit, but never investigated when it happened or why.
So on the list from the OP, it means that certain songs were recorded that night but never released on that "album"?
Also, he should've done a Wilbury song. Those are my faves.
anyone got a copy (audio or video) of JJ doing ghost of tom joad with Morello?

BH, is this still compiled somewhere on the interwebs?
Quote from: BH on Oct 10, 2006, 11:23 AM
*The Same In Any Language (Wilson/Crowe) Elizabethtown
*Wear Your Love Like Heaven (Donovan) Donavan Tribute
So here they are:
Disc One
(http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e399/dwhmmci/CoversDisc1.jpg)
Disc Two
(http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e399/dwhmmci/CoversDisc2.jpg)
Disc Three

Disc Four (My favorite pic)

Lettering is much sharper in the originals. (Easier to read)
No but I can dig for it and upload sometime soon.....
please please

I completely agree!
This could use an update, too. Lots of new covers since then.
would love to hear this, thank you! Looks incredible.
When you want something done...
I've added a few covers to the list and made a covers compilation that started with this thread a few years ago. I didn't add cover tunes from the OBH tapings, because you should already have those. There might be a few mistakes, and if you think there are glaring omissions, let me know.
Here is a screen shot of the folder's contents, followed by a download link (almost 1GB).

I'm uploading an updated collection, though it lacks many covers they debuted in 2017. If anyone can identify and could compile any missing tracks, I would appreciate a share...
