Title: The Aspiring Completists' Guidebook - Songs A-to-Z
Post by: Angry Ewok on Jun 27, 2007, 01:43 AM
[Updated August 8, 2011]

The purpose of this thread is to aide folks in closing in on the massive My Morning Jacket discography. This is an alphabetical song listing, with +'s to mark variations of the song. Anyone can score the songs of the standard albums, but not everyone knew that there are at least 5 variations of Dancefloors. I've tried my best to indicate sources where each variation can be found.

The exact size of the discography, even the definition of what consists of the discography, is obviously disputable... so for now, I am focusing on material that was published. Some songs, while studio quality, weren't published, so it's a bit harder to quote a source to where people can obtain a copy. In time, I definitely want to add to the list in the direction. In the meantime, check out the ever growing Covers Compilation thread*. In the future, I will also update the list (and add a post) for collaborative songs and the like.

Big thanks to our lovely moderating team, Ger Potz and his "From Nashville to Kentucky" database, and all of the folks in the community who are obsessed as I am - united we find.

damn, Brad!  Great work!  I gave the list a quick look and could only find one track I may dispute.  Hot Burrito #1 was never really published and there is no release called Gram Parsons tribute.  He recorded a version for the tribute DVD but that hasn't surfaced and was never published.  What did surface was a version of him doing the song at KCRW.  The only "release" that that track was "published" on was my covers comp on this site and that probably doesn't count even though it is studio quality.

also, it seems like the ultra-rare version of freebird should be included although it was only release as a promo disc under the name ruckus

okay, more than one thing, dream a little dream of me was originally released on a comp called from iceland to kentucky.  it's the same version as the early recordings so i don't think you want to list it seperately but i thought i'd point that out.

also, i, too, am holding out hope that they will eventually release Bonarroo 06 but i asked their manager and he said they didn't have any plans to release it.  and with 07 in the bag I seriously doubt that that show will ever be officially "published"

"Gram Parsons Tribute" was going to be my short hand for Return to Sin City - A Tribute to Gram Parsons (2005), but I wasn't sure if the song was ever released in conjunction with the DVD, so I left it more generically titled until I could get some more input.

I'll be making another list at the tail end of the discography, specifically for Studio Quality, but unreleased material. This will be a spot for songs like Hot Burrito, O Holy Night, etc.

Quotealso, it seems like the ultra-rare version of freebird should be included although it was only release as a promo disc under the name ruckus

Yep. I'd love to know what kind of release this thing saw in terms of quantity, as it is probably one of the more interesting and rare promotional pieces I've heard of from the band. My guess would be that this is not a rip from the movie, considering the performance is interrupted.

I'll see if I can't get some help with this one.

Quotealso, i, too, am holding out hope that they will eventually release Bonarroo 06 but i asked their manager and he said they didn't have any plans to release it.  and with 07 in the bag I seriously doubt that that show will ever be officially "published"

I've heard conflicting things from reliable sources about this, but I can't really say much. What I will say is that I spoke to some folks back in '06 and I was forwarded to the people at Bonnaroo. At the least, we might see some of the material on a sort of Bonnaroo compilation, like was done in 2004, so I'll leave it up for a while.

On that note...

I'm also curious to know what people think about me adding the eMusic Exclusive, My Morning Jacket Live at 9:30 Club album to the discography. This is sold in the same manner that the Bonnaroo shows are, and the quality is superb. It's from the 08/16/2002 performance. Highly recommended, sold at... http://www.emusic.com

Everyone agree that these sort of online Exclusives count as "Published Material" like the iTunes Exclusive "How Could I Know?" and the like?

Those MoS tracks are "unreleased" as well but were available at their website for awhile or something like that.

Should we include the "Rolling Stone Sessions".   I think there was an actual CD for this.  I downloaded it with a cover art and everything.  Maybe it should go in the unreleased section?  I will let you decide as well as these.....

These are already on the list, but were noted 'Rolling Stone EP' - I've changed the name to 'Rolling Stone Session'... Weird you mention the recording, I've been listening to the three songs for an hour or so this morning!

I'd say that if the Month of Sundays website made the songs available, then that'd count as "Published"... I'd love to get a hold of those, by the way.

Where is/was the XM Show available? I don't know if I've heard it before.

I could be wrong but I think both of those are exact copies of the other versions and therefore not "seperate" tracks so to speak.

Is being an ass the fuel that keeps your fire going?

It's fine with me, I don't mind, I am just trying to figure you out.

You remind me a bit of an old friend of mine.  He couldn't help it.  It was just who he was.  Eric?  Is that you?

Brad do you keep track of all the bands the other guys were in as well?  I know Tommy was in some ?punk?Hardcore? bands before MMJ that had some 45's and what not.  They all were in previous bands I guess, but maybe Month of Sundays is the only one to ever really have much material?
Title: Re: The Aspiring Completists' Guidebook - Songs A-
Post by: Angry Ewok on Jul 05, 2007, 02:36 PM
Nope, I can't say I've really kept up with any of the other stuff, but recently I've become more interested in it. You're right, though, the guys' past works are definitely more punk-ish... I recently got the two vinyls by Month of Sundays, and I've got a pal sending me the hotel Roy disc. In the future I plan on picking up Carl's solo work, too. Basically anything I can get my hands on.

That's why I included the Misc section... for previous works and also songs where they are guest starring, like America's cover of Golden (Jim plays guitar) and whatnot. I think it's far from a blemish on the disco. list, in fact, I'd say sampling the band members' previous works only helps to enrich the appreciation of MMJ.

There's something I'd like to correct. How Do You Know? is an iTunes exclusive with Okonokos, not How Could I Know. I would be in a position to know this, owning the iTunes version of Okonokos.

QuoteThere's something I'd like to correct. How Do You Know? is an iTunes exclusive with Okonokos, not How Could I Know. I would be in a position to know this, owning the iTunes version of Okonokos.

really, then i do have it!  how could i know and how do you know are too confusing.  that song will always be oxen to me.

unfortunately, I don't .  Which means I just got demoted from completist to aspiring completist.  I asked Ger if he had it since I found out about from him.  He said he didn't have it either making the only hole in his collection.  He spoke to a guy who has it and was able to get scans and CD info from him but no mp3. maybe we could get the dude's email and blast him with emails begging for it.  btw, ger said the lucky bastard bought it in a record store for like 5 bucks.  >:(

I've emailed the guy a few more times, but the communication went dead unfortunately.

This is as close as I've been to this disc (this is where the picture on my site comes from):

Thanks for the scan Ger, all I had seen was the small scan on your website.

I can't wait to have a reason to update this thread... NEW MATERIAL, PLEASE!

Since the Darla mailer was the same version as the studio, I figured I'd leave it off... unless you guys think it'd be best for delivering a truly complete discography?

I only put it on this thread because I didn't know where else to list it, but I agree, it doesn't deserve to be on the list.

I believe you are correct, however I am still trying to see if I can isolate and rip it from the DVD.  It may be a fruitless effort, and the song is not continuous in the film, if I recall correctly, but I don't feel like watching an otherwise subpar film just to catch the scenes with Ruckus.

Great work man, very interesting & informative. See ya have some 'tribute' stuff so add these.
*26-second Song and Lullabies, Legends & Lies from Twistable Turntable Man - Tribute to Shel Silverstein.
*Youre a Big Girl Now from Chimes of Freedom - Songs of Bob Dylan.
You have Blue Moon as being an Elvis cover. It was written by Rodgers & Hart in the 30's and covered by many greats including Mel Torme, Ella Fitzgerald & Frank Sinatra. Elvis did cover it in '56 and The Marcells went to the top of the charts covering it in '61.
Elvis also did Blue Moon of Kentucky covering Bill Monroe.
Thanks again for the awesome post.

Wait, when I inherited my first MMJ collection, on both At Dawn and Tennessee Fire, there were two untitled instrumental tracks. Those have names?! Is Alabama Come Clean on TTF or AD? I'm getting conflicting reports from google.

Actually, the untitled instrumental on AD actually sounds like an extension of I Needed It Most, whereas the instrumental on TTF sounds very different
