i cannot over-emphasize the amount of jealousy i feel over people who can somehow get tickets to such events before they go on sale to the rest of us.

i guess, like a lot of life, it's all about who you know.

I would actually rather stuff like that not be rubbed in my face.  I at least wanna believe I was beat fair and square by bigger fans if I dont get tickets

Post by: slappymoe on Dec 10, 2010, 12:29 PM
good point. it does make one wonder just how many tickets will be gone before we "unconnected" folks even get a shot.

i feel pretty good about it though. I have plans and back up plans to aquire them. I just wish I knew how many ear x tacy would have and how many tix a person can buy. i believe that headliners is a 600 person capacity.

and I haven't even discussed how awesome this is.

The obvious Jim will be great, Patrick will be there which is awesome. Ben Sollee is amazing. and Scott Carney of Wax Fang will be good. I have fallen in love with WF in the last 6 months and couldnt really enjoy their feedback-drowned show at the YUM center.

I contribute to it.  It was started by Kory who also on this board.  John King from Louisville is for Lovers also contributes.

As far as advance tickets, I'm also in that group with Potsy and I assure you we all are big jacket fans.

I wasn't trying to be a stickler. I know that people get advanced tickets to shows through bands and what not. But in the special case of 600 or less tickets, it becomes a bigger deal.

Don't fret my my fellow jacketheads. I spoke to the person in charge of the show. There will be 700 tickets available tomorrow at 10:00 am. You can purchase them @ earxtacy or on etix.com. Buy your tickets tomorrow and all will be fine.......but don't procrastinate! Hats off to Headliners and all the artists for donating their time to help save our local record store. An act of kindness such as this, is what the season is truly about. Peace to all.

Got 4 tix online with no issues, can't believe they are letting people buy upto 24 tickets.  With a 700 seat venue this just doesn't make sense to me.

for the roll call, Me plus 3

the description says possible surprise guests and performances, I'm thinking the whole band could be there but they didn't want to marketed as a Jacket show due to the limited seating?  Wishful thinking right?

Yeah I'm thinking this is gonna be a big show in a small venue just for the local music lovers.  "Couldn't tell anyone about it" very interesting, were they even advertising this at earxtacy?

alright, it's the day of the show.  this will be my first time seeing jim james without the rest of the band behind him.  i'm fired up and looking forward to it, but......

my excitement is tempered by the fact that my alarm will go off at 4:30 tomorrow morning.  gotta work.  unless.......

anybody got a good, foolproof lie i can lay on my boss before i leave for the show tonight?  something that will keep me from having to wake up at 4:30, call my boss and use the old, tired, obvious "*cough, cough*, i don't feel so good, *cough cough*"  line?  or worse yet, actually go to work?

best i've come up with so far:  "i had my leg amputated today, so i won't be there tomorrow.  doctor says it should grow back by tuesday, though."

surely someone can suggest something a little more believable?

Gotta say that might have been the most unique show I have ever seen.  Patrick rockin' like the whole band was there and Jim playin the bass like I've never heard.  FUNKY!!!!
Met Cory and Dillion really cool peeps.  Met Jim and Patrick for the first time.(http://lh5.ggpht.com/_-R6K9l4y2ps/TRgqRdaDTeI/AAAAAAAADhM/0YbaYBDgekg/s128/100_2776.JPG)

My buddy filmed the whole show, I know nothing about uploading and sharing but when I get a copy if it is worth it I will learn and share with all you folks.  Best part was right before Jim played Wonderful and Bermudah Highway, he asked everyone to STFU in a nice way of course.  ;D Gotta get to bed now.  Amazing 2 man show, Amazing........

He had six different things hooked up to a pedal, hooked up to his bass guitar...it was ridiculous. I was at the front of the stage on the left, so when he brought all his gear out it was right in front of me. I have no idea what all the things were, though...just different knobs and adjustments and etc...

That was so very mind blowing. These dudes are changing the way music is played on so many levels. Jim James is on some other plain right now; it's like the way he's playing an instrument is the way he'd prefer to communicate with the world. I'm driving home. I'll post more thoughts later. Un fucking believable

first of all, it was nice to briefly meet brian porter....and his recording equipment.  thanks again to all the tapers out there.

scott carney was a fun opener, "psycho killer" killed.

the watson twins were lovely, too damn much talking while they played, though.

ben solee is a freak of nature.  the sounds he squeezes from that cello are other-worldly.

cabin was a big surprise.  never even heard of them, they were great.

as for jim and patrick, really, you get to a point where you run out of superlatives to describe these guys.    that freaky/funky groove that surfaced throughout their set, the sheer force of patrick pounding his drum kit, jim wailing on that distorted bass, his kindly way of asking everyone to shut the hell up and listen to the soft songs, and that voice.......damn, definitely some non-sexual man-love going on here.

haven't had a chance to review the video i took, if it's worth a damn i'll be sure to post it.

it was well worth getting only 4 hours sleep last night.   now it's time for a long winter's nap.

darkglow has a certain way with words.

From the recaps, this show sounds like it was amazing. So sad to have missed it. What an awesome experience for everyone who was there. Jim just keeps redefining himself, yet he stays humble and awesome throughout. One of the most innovative musical minds out there.

This show is being fluffed big time.
I have been a life long Louisville resident
and been seeing this band since the beginning.

This show was very "meh"
Crowd sucked. Stop talking and singing
so loud. Patrick didn't change a thing about
his drumming. He was playing along to the
tunes like the full band was there. My whole
crew did not buy this show. It seemed unrehearsed
and a pity party for a soon to be closed business.

I am over the head banging. Time for a new gimmick.
Now I know why I don't really listen to this band anymore.
Just thought I would get a better performance than this.
The opener was terrible. Gideon and all the other rock
songs just lacked substance. Golden and Bermuda Highway
were great as always.

No encore tells me Jim was not all that into this show either.

Thanks for the ticket September.

I'm sorry September wasted the ticket.

For some, an unrehearsed appearance by 2 Louiville residents who just happen to be 40 percent of My Morning Jacket, in honor of a local record store, sounds pretty sweet, along with the other acts and all for $20!  These guys showed on the day after Christmas, not to promote themselves but to support a struggling local business.  For many Jacket fans, especially during a stretch without any significant touring, we take what we can.

And, no offense, but I get the sense that "life long Louiville residents" who have been "seeing this band since the beginning" often come across as a bit elitist to some sad fuck middle aged New Englander who just discovered MMJ two years ago.

As skyisburning says, "to each his own."

This was definitely the most interesting Jim James production I have ever seen or heard.  My wife is into the acoustic stuff and was not a fan of the intensely distorted bass mindf*%K opening.  I on the other hand kind of enjoyed it.

The bass sounded like some sort of deep phantom of the opera meets black sabbath organ from hell.  Particularly on that riff he kept using to transition between songs.

I have to say that they created a lot of presence for just two people.  I saw that Jim had a whole rack of guitars and would have liked to see him return to the 6 string for OBH to close out but the lead bass arrangement was ballsy to say the least.   The bass worked well on Smokin from Shootin but not so much for OBH.

I think he sensed a friendly crowd at an unofficial non-MMJ event and considered it a one-off chance to experiment.  I consider it just that; a unique experiment and something that you won't get elsewhere. Kind of like a jam-session freak out (with some beautiful acoustic classics in the middle) that was absolutely unexpected.  I appreciate the opportunity to have had my ear drums blown in such a unique way.

At this juncture, I'm presented with two options:

1) admit defeat in the face of such miserable companions

2) raise the possibility - am I bigsur or hacksaw?

I'd prefer to just admit I'll never be as depressed as Eeyore and I've got better things to do than hop around the Internet being a grinch.

Then again, it was pretty frakked up for Yim to not play the laser harp in any of those videos, especially given the fact that the East Coast was decimated with snow.

No encore tells me Jim was not all that into this show either.

Thanks for the ticket September.

If you're trollin'...fair enough.  Otherwise, an honest thank you for an objective counterpoint.  Much appreciated because it made sense to me, is needed, and I really celebrate it. :)

Man elitist are the worst people ever. I don't understand the point of people just trying to bring others down.

Right, because all Southern people are generally less intelligent than you.

Look at what I started!  Perhaps "elitist" was a poor choice of words.  I just figure prefacing your comments with "lifelong Louisville resident" who changed Jim's diapers is supposed to give us a sense that your opinion matters more.

Opinions are like assholes, a wise man once said (Ghandi?)- everyone's got one.  The thing is, you don't have to spread your cheeks to show us.

I will say, I respect his opinion that the show was underwhelming for him.  I just didn't care for the dissing of others' praise.

Awesome shots man!

I'm watching these videos and laughing to myself right now. That OBH was so out of control. Jim's bass windmills and general raging around 4:10 tells me he was VERY much into the show.  I've never seen a bass get played or sound like that.

Scott Carney's "Psycho Killer" was excellent, especially considering I listened to the Talking Heads greatest hits like 3 times on the way down.

The Watson Twins did it for me! I'll say they sound as good as they look and their Buddy Guy cover to close out their set was marvelous.

Cabin! They had a KICK ASS sound. Got to shake hands with the drummer pre show, really nice guy.

Ben Sollee was good but I would have enjoyed his set MUCH more if it were quieter.

It was super cool hanging with Jim's folks and his Aunt and Uncle before the show too. Really nice people, they liked the Christmas sweater crew we had going.

It was a special night for sure. Wonderful to hook back up with darkglow and meeting everyone I did before hand was amazing. This night was another fine example of how MMJ fans make their shows that much more special.

Great night!  All the openers were fantastic but there was too much talking going on during the acoustic sets.

Jim and Pat rocked it out.  What a unique experience! I feel blessed to get to witness yet another special night with the Jacket in da Ville.

I got to introduce the gang that met up to ex-drummer KC Guetig as well as Jim parents.  They didn't embarrass me TOO much. At least I don't think.  :-\

It was pretty cool because at the preshow meetup TwoFingers mentioned he had Psycho Killer in his head and we talked about the awesomeness that is David Bryne.  Then we get to the show and I ask Scott Carney what he's planning on playing.  He pulls out a list of 6 or 7 songs and said I'm going to play four of these.  When I saw Psycho Killer I told him he HAD to play it.  He closed with it and it killed.

It was great to see the forum peeps and meet some news one.  We had a blast!

Kory, amazing work with the camera as always, brother!

All I'm saying is that no one has really heard much from her since she held Jim's hand during that show

She's playing a $10 show here soonish.

lolololol

I'll take that as maniacal evil laughter

i would pay $10 to see those man hands--they're something else; carnival worthy...

I can't begin to express how much I loved this show!  Does anyone know if there are any recordings of that night?  Because I loved Jim's duet with Ben Sollee, as well.

i had the pleasue of briefly meeting brian porter and his recording equipment at the show.  i wish i had thought to buy him a beer for all his efforts.

so there's definitely a recording, i just wonder if you can hear the music over all the talking.

It felt like there was a lot of talking during the earlier acts, but I didn't notice it as much during the James/Hallahan set, but I was closer for them so maybe that's why.  Clearly everyone's talking about OBH being AMAZING...but I thought the acoustic portion was just as breathtaking, "Golden" and "Bermuda Highway" still get me no matter how many times I hear them.

ok,

i've been patient for long enough.. did brian porter's recording of this show not turn out well enough to be released, or what? maybe headliners and ear-x-tacy decided they'd like to release this officially..

can't someone shed some light on the situation. this band is one of the most heavily shrouded when it comes to releasing information to it's loyal fans, and i'm not sure if that's what helps make the fan community here so tight knit or what..

Brian did tape it, I talked to him last week. there were some issues with his rig though and instead of recording through those glorious mics in the sky it recorded through the actual unit on the floor. He said it didn't sound bad but could have been waaaay better.
I've never heard Brian let out a bad tape so if it doesn't surface, it's probably not worth hearing. Hang in there, it's the holidays and people have many family obligations and general life rather than going to a show, taping it and getting it out to other fans at breakneck speeds.
The general rule of asking for tapes is two weeks.

speaking as the old fogey that i am:

it wasn't that long ago that when you went to a concert, the music your heard was a unique, one-time, never-to-be-heard-again offering from the band to the audience.  they laid it out there, it entered your ears, flowed thru your soul, and then disappeared forever.

my, how things have changed.   i've bought all the pearl jam shows i've attended (plus a few i didn't), got 2 cds (and even a dvd) of The Who from their last couple of tours, plus all the MMJ/JJ/MOF stuff i've downloaded for free.    don't get me wrong, i absolutely love having a recording of the shows i've seen, and deeply appreciate the efforts of the tapers out there, it's just that i feel a tiny bit of the "specialness" of attending a show is lost if anyone with an internet connection can buy or download a copy.

having said all that......here's hoping brian's recording turned out well enough for him to share!

I've had similar thoughts, but then I realized that it just forces bands to put on a better live show to bring an "uncapturable essence", so I'm down with that. It's why you get Phish riding in on a giant hotdog and ba-ba-bananas flung at your head

This show is being fluffed big time.
I have been a life long Louisville resident
and been seeing this band since the beginning.

This show was very "meh"
Crowd sucked. Stop talking and singing
so loud. Patrick didn't change a thing about
his drumming. He was playing along to the
tunes like the full band was there. My whole
crew did not buy this show. It seemed unrehearsed
and a pity party for a soon to be closed business.

I am over the head banging. Time for a new gimmick.
Now I know why I don't really listen to this band anymore.
Just thought I would get a better performance than this.
The opener was terrible. Gideon and all the other rock
songs just lacked substance. Golden and Bermuda Highway
were great as always.

No encore tells me Jim was not all that into this show either.

Thanks for the ticket September.

You are welcome, Sur.
Sorry you didn't enjoy the show more.

Not sure what to make of 'em, though.  I don't see any downloadable files that  I can use.  Anyone have insight into these?

I would also like to make the original files available for those that can use the HD format.  If it's easy and someone can tell me how to do it, that would be great.  If not I will have to get these files to someone else and they could do it.

How big is the WMV file?  What about the individual HD files?  Usually, monster files work best with torrents, but I've never uploaded files this way.  I've made moderately large files available through megaupload.com.  I've never uploaded to archive.org either.

No worries, rusty, just asking- how's the progress on this?  Anything I can do to help?  I thought Dylan might be on it, too.  How big is the file?  You could put up a torrent.  I've never upped anything to torrent, so I'm clueless as to where you'd start.  Megaupload's been pretty friendly for all my uploading/file-sharing needs, but I don't know the limit for a free account.  Maybe Sticky could agree to free up our MMJ Covers account with Mediafire.  It might have a larger upload limit.  Just know I'm here for you, man.  We can do this.  Hell, we should rip the audio, too.

No problem man, my pleasure, glad I could help make your day better.
Smokin' from Shootin' was my fav,  but I thought the whole show was really cool, not very often you get to see just a singer and drummer with the singer playing bass.  I was going in expecting more acoustic and well, you seen what we got.

Here is the audio, in the same three parts as the WMV files, as 256 kbps MP3s.  If someone wants to chop it up into tracks, have at it.  Thanks again, Rusty!

I'll be chopping that up tomorrow or Sunday. I'm on my phone right now. I can't have one big file I don't like it. I'm gonna need help on how to upload it though, I've never done it

Sorry if anyone is having trouble I did my best to get the wmv format up.  Archive takes care of the rest as far as adding other formats to the page.  I test dwnloaded Part 1 of the wmv and it seemed to work fine and I left it at that.  I'm no guru as you can tell.

Hey Rusty.  Would you mind if I attempted to set up a torrent for folks to download?

I've converted your 3-part wmv into a single iso file, which most folks can burn onto DVD-R (its under 4 GB).  It recognizes each of the 3 parts as a chapter on the DVD.

Looks and sounded fine on my flatscreen and 7.1 system this afternoon.  Thought I'd share it.

Its my first time uploading to torrent tracking, and I'm not sure what I'm doing, but was in the process when I thought "hey, I should probably check with rusty95 and see if he's okay with it, as it is his recording after all."  Then I thought "I'd better ask him in public, so it will be harder for him to say no."  ;)

I just found this on YouTube. It was uploaded by Scott Shuffitt just 3 weeks ago. I'm pretty sure it is from this special show to save ear-X-tacy back on Dec. 26, 2010. (If I'm wrong, will one of you kind folks who were there let me know?)

Anyway, here are Ben Sollee and Jim James at Headliners Music Hall in December of 2010 performing "Electrified".
