Title: "guilty pleasure bands or songs"
Post by: TheLink on Aug 03, 2005, 12:34 PM
hey all.  personally, i like a lot of different music, except most rap and pop-country music.  but, we all have what we call guilty pleasures.  and now, even those 80's songs we all loved then are considered very uncool.  so, i figured we here could make a much better list than some asshole at VH1 about music We here in the Jacket community think we are "guilty" for liking.  I will start by saying that i like most Death Cab for Cutie songs.  I do consider this a guilty pleasure and most of my friends would say it is quite whiny and gay.  What can i say, I like it.  Obviously, Jim must have liked the Pet Shop Boys' song he covered.  I'm sure he caught some shit from most of his buddies for it too.  No real point here.  Just want to see what us Jacket fans, and we all consider ourselves fairly good judges of music, consider to be "guilty pleasures"?
Peace.

Haha, I'm a deathcab fan too.

I would say that my biggest one would have to be A Flock of Seagulls. I've always wanted to do a cover of Space Age Love Song.

My guiltiest musical pleassure is probably Neil Diamond.  I'm not feelin too guilty about it, but whenever anyone hears me rockin out to some diamond they think I'm crazy or something.  But what can I say, sometimes I like my music like I like my pizza, with extra cheese! ;D

dude, my wife is a huge Diamond fan. She fucking loves him.

My latest guilty pleasure is My Chemical Romance. I know I shouldn't like them, but I can't get their songs out of my head. It's a little too "angsty" for me, but I can't help.

That reminds me of that line from 'What About Bob?':  "There are only two kinds of people in this world, those who like Neil Diamond and those who do not.  My ex-wife loves him."

:)  Seriously, dude, hang on to that one!

Oh yes.  That one is high on the awesome scale.

I feel guilty for how much I like Bob Seger.  Not guilty, per se...  Like, but I don't normally talk about it.

I find it mildly embarassing that I know most of the words to Get Your Hands Off of my Woman, MF.

ahem.  But that's my old roommate's fault.  I was FORCED to listen.  And FORCED to dance.

Oh, there's nothing wrong with the Darkness. That's a great song. Really.

EC, you know our Seger connection, right? I'm sure I mentioned it in a Seger thread on that other board.

I remember once seeing a movie where Jack Black played an obsessive Neil Diamond fan.
He even had a restraining order.
Anyone else seen this? I've forgotten the title.

wow!  ND is quite a guilt maker.  Seger is pretty bad too.  At this point, I am feeling pretty guilty about my days of touring with Phish.  man, Trey has turned into quite a sellout.  whatever that is, he seems to be heading there.  anyone watch the Allanis concerts that are on cable lately?  I am feeling really bad about that right now :-/

The Strokes, Ryan Adams, and Coldplay are all bands i like/tolerate but won't come right out and say it.

i listen to hip-hop and country(old), but don't consider either of them a guilty pleasure.

I've loved Rick Springfield since I was 10 years old and I'm not ashamed to say I still do.  He was my first taste of romance.  I think I like Romantic music.  I think MMJ is romantic music.  Rick Springfield is a twelve year old boys MMJ.  I saw him here in Knoxville a couple of years ago with my wife and he absolutly blew us away.  That man can absolutly shred on lead guitar.  He played his guitar with a dozen roses as a pick.  The petals just exploded.  It was insane.  I think I watched the movie "Hard To Hold" 50 times.

Olivia Newton John(cringe cringe)

OK, I was stuck on the album cover for the longest time cause she is HOT. But I love the song Xanadu. Many many years ago, everyone wanted me to play the theme from Ice Castles(Thru The Eyes Of Love) for their wedding. I still tickle the acoustic every so often with that song.

Oh yeah, she did run calling Wildfire and I loved every minute of it.

And Moonlight Feels Right will always be a classic in my heart. My fav lyrics from that song:

We'll see the sun come up on sunday morning
and watch it fade the moon away
I guess you know I'm giving you a warning
'cause me and moon are itching to play

Damn it, now I have to go to Blockbuster and Best Buy now.

guiltiest pleasure to me is the canadian rock band "theory of a deadman"

i liked the debut album and this new one is cool too.. especially the song "santa monica".. check it out if you have time. i know it sounds like so much else out there but the singer's voice is catchy.

i like driving in the car to that whole record.

i'm finally ready to fest up about being a big Dave Matthews fan back in the day (and maybe still a little today).  I don't know if people on this board like him because of the ATO connection, but only my good friends know about my dmb past.  It used to be cool to like dmb when no one knew who they were.  Now I can't help but feeling like a 14 year-old girl when I listen to them   :-[

You know, I remember hearing a record when they first came out, and I remember liking it.  So don't feel too alone.

I never got into the "scene", and after Bonnaroo, I'm preeeetty sure it's not my thing.  But from what I remember, Dave Matthews is a really great musician, and his songs are well-crafted and technically sound.  It's just not my style.
