These are four bands that I absolutely love, and I find great similarities between each. Any thoughts on these bands? I looked through a lot of these "other music" threads, and couldn't find anything on these four amazing bands. Just wanted to make sure I'm not the only fan on this forum.....

I've only heard 3 of those 4 bands...Flaming Lips, Sparklehorse and Grandaddy. I've got a few Flaming Lips and Sparklehorse albums and definitely would consider myself a big fan of both bands. The Flaming Lips put on ONE HELL OF A SHOW (saw them at the Greek Theatre a few years back), and Sparklehorse, while definitely more subdued, also is outstanding live (saw them at Bimbos in SF around the time of It's A Wonderful Life). The only exposure I have of Grandaddy was as opening band for Giant Sand at a Socialist bar in Berkeley  ;D They were pretty cool...wadn't no Giant Sand though.

The Flaming Lips are amazing though, and I can listen to them most anytime...have to be in the mood for Sparklehorse, but Linkous is a pretty brilliant songwriter. I've heard the name Yo La Tengo for years, never heard one song of theirs, as far as I know.

Mark Linkous is an absolute genious.  Very few albums break my heart more than Good Morning Spider.

I always associate Super Furry Animals with Grandaddy for some reason. I think musically they're very similar

AM 570 or whatever that song is was the perfect choice for 28 days later.

LOOOOOOOOOOOVE Grandaddy...it's a shame they broke up.

I really got into sparklehorse last summer after getting "dreamt for light years in the belly of a mountain".  Great album.

yes to all 4!! (especially Yo La Tengo) i'm biased too, cuz they live a few blocks from me. they are amazing, unpredictable, can jam like nobody's biz; grandaddy VERY underrated.
but come on...there's nothing sexy about poop. Nothing.  -bbill

you live close to yo la tengo! shit! lucky.
i saw them play in 07 at the Austin City Limits fest. It was the highlight of the festival for me (had I been listening to mmj at the time, though, they probably would've taken that place...). They have been around for so long making amazing music, yet they still seem like an 'underground' band.
As for Grandaddy, I too am very sad that they are no longer together. But with the end of one good thing comes the start of another...
The Flaming Lips is in my top ten list of bands I must see ASAP. I've seen videos of their live shows, and every single one is always fantastic.

The solo Jason Lytle and All Smiles stuff is worth it, IMO.

yes you must. I've seen them many times and it's always a blast.

Also check out their concert DVD. It's tremendous.
