Very, very sad scene last night.  Some folks should not play with LSD.

My friend who works there called me very shortly after that happened.  Unfortunately, she was near enough to hear the glass break.

I'd like to believe lsd wasn't involved, but I guess we can't know for sure.

Many blessings to all involved...

Here's a bunch of rarities (rehearsal, studio outtakes, ect) I made available on another board. All files are in flac or shn format. Links at the end of each info file. Didn't test all the links, so let me know if any are down and I'll re-up.

Mickey and Jerry make a public apology for having to cancel the December 18, 1970 show that was to take place in Port Chester.

This however is no ordinary "I'm sorry" statement :-)

Comments from Deadlists.com:

There were three shows booked & advertised for the Capitol Theater on December 18, 19 & 20 but they were cancelled and rescheduled for February 71. There is tape in circulation of a radio ad announcing and apologizing for the cancellation ("The Port Chester Apology").

This is an interesting glimpse into the state of the band immediately following Brent's untimely demise. This comes right on the heels of the highly innovative fall '90 MSG run (Hornsby's first few shows with the boyz),and directly precedes the Fall European tour. All 3 songs rehearsed find their way into the European setlists. It is too bad "Stander" was dropped from rotation after only a couple of performances.
The banter in between takes is an engaging look at the bands rehearsal process, especially in regards to the addition of 2 new members.

Garcia & Cage
December 7, 1971

Jetty's theater Music Hall, Wash,DC

Picked up something I haven't seen elsewhere.
This single sbd CD features Jerry Garcia & Buddy Cage jamming and
noodling with a few Marmaduke vocals and a Weir vocal (Seasons).
Someone (Marmaduke) picks up a bass halfway through)
Very interesting artifact, not from the vault.  Session runs until reel
runs out (47:30)

Here what I have on this:
=================================
Jam Session Info
Here's the note from James that came with the show:
Now, to the other goody I sent you. Here's the story on that. A friend of
mine who does sound and production work here in St. Louis was taking slide
guitar lessons and went through the archive of open reel tapes they had
there and found the one in question. He asked to borrow it and took it home
and did a 24 bit digital transfer from the mono 7" open reel. This hasn't
been heard by many more people than Brad, myself and a few others in 30
years!!! I was pretty damn excited about the discovery and glad that I was
only the second person that had heard it counting Brad after he mastered the
tape. As far as I know at this point it's Jerry Garcia, Buddy Cage and other
members of NRPS. Other than that that's all I know right now. The Grateful
Dead's archives don't even have this tape. Pretty fun stuff to listen too
even though it's a lot of noodling and such. I kinda like it myself.
Everything was plugged straight into the open reel deck. So the source would
be:
7" mono open reel > 24 bit transfer > resample > CD-R
====================

My attempt at a setlist:

1. unknown (Garcia & Cage duet)
2. Runnin' Back To You ( G&C no vocal)
3. unknown (G&C)
4. noodle (G&C)
5. Take Me Home Country Roads (G&C Marmaduke and others on vocals)
6. jazz riff (Cage)
7. Long Black Veil (G&C McDuke on vocals)
8. Anybody Goin' To San Antone (G&C plus McDuke)
9. unknown (Jerry out? - he mentions having to get to hotel at the airport)
10. unknown
11. equipment fu

"You know some of you people are just straight fucking ASSHOLES! I knew Joey & he was MY friend. It's so easy 2talk shit on people u don't know because none of you have lost him. HE WASN'T ON DRUGS & HE DiDN'T DRiNK. So for everyone running they're mouth & ASSuming things..u can shut the fuck up & stop now. K? Thanxx. Joe had been thru a lot this past yr. He lost his best friend 5wks ago in a car accident, 3mos ago he lost 2aunts 4days apart & then he finds out the girl he used to be engaged too, has been taken off life support after almost 6mos of struggling. He had been going thru TONS of shit at home w.his parents [one is also very very sick] & he had the opportunity 2go 2this concert. He LOVED Furthur..seriously. All he did was listen to Furthur, never had any other cd's or anything. He was actually thinking about getting a tattoo to honor them. He had all types of shirts & hoodies made w.Furthur on them lol..he even got some of his friends into them as well. When we found out they were coming 2PGH we knew we had 2get him tickets. He was so excited & then everything in his life started going downhill. He was saving money 2get the tickets & everything. One day we went 2 a pizza shop, and uknow how they have the "Donate a dollar to save Sally's life" cups? He took out this paper bag & put it in the jar. All his money he had saved up. He didnt eat anymore, he was just walking around like a zombie. He's a diabetic & wasnt taking care of himself..and anyone who knows anything about Diabetic's, knows that when they're body starts acting up..they can do CRAZY things. A friend & I dragged him 2the dr's where he refused 2talk 2them & tell them anything. He had severe depression & wldnt even get out of bed. We got him the tickets, thinking he wld take this girl that lived a few houses down..but he didnt even care. Not even a smile. His dad tried over & over again 2get him out of bed & help him feel better but nothing worked. The night of the concert he agreed 2go 2the concert w.his dad if we stopped nagging him [we sang jingle bells for 2hrs straight]. I got a call from him a few hrs later & he thanked me & told me he loved me & appreciated everything we've done 4him. But nothing would make him alive again. He said that his soul had died & he was a walking shell. He started talking crazy then..he didnt remember who he was talking 2. I knew he was going into diabetic shock & acting crazy. He hung up on me & next thing I find out I lost one of my best friends. Joey was one of the sweetest ppl ive ever met. I lost 12ppl in the last 2yrs..and every one of them have impacted me. But losing Joey really hurt. He was my sons godfather. So b4 u sit here & talk shit on someone u know NOTHiNG about. Remember that he was someones SON, BROTHER, GODFATHER, UNCLE. Remember that HiS family & friends are MOURNiNG THE LOSS OF A LOVED ONE. Show respect. If this was your father or brother you would feel the same way!"

Very sad.

Same here.

I'll be seeing Furthur with my daughter on Tuesday in Orlando. Been looking forward to it for a while now, but this young guys death has kind of put a damper on my enthusiasm. I know it really hasn't got anything to do with the band, and could have happened at any show this guy went to, but it's just really sad, and has me bummed out a bit.

Really hoping the power of the music Tuesday night will do it's magic on me, as it has so many times before.

I hear ya on that, I think it's up to us fans to bring as much positive juice to the scene as possible to help heal the vibe & say our prayers (or whatever we do!) while we're there as our token to the loss.

I think dancing as much as possible and smiling at all the faces is prayer in itself, and just being aware of the memory brings light to things... I might even stop a stranger, just to shake their hand

Everybody is playing, in the Heart of Gold Band

A little late with my thoughts on the Orlando show, but just now back home from my trip.

UCF is a BEAUTIFUL campus, and has a really sweet on campus arena. The stage was at 1/2 house, so I figured it held around 4-5k. The band was on fire, and gave us such a rockin show, I'm still smilin. ;)

I can't wait for a summer show or two. Definitely going to try for the St. Augustine show, as that's one of my favorite places, with a real nice, small, outside Amp. 8)

I'm a big fan of anything from the 1970's.  I believe that you can only stream soundboards as of a few years ago.  If it's a download I think that you'll be limited to audience recordings.  If you like what you hear and want to make a purchase, you can't really go wrong with any of the Dick's Picks series.

That's the equivalent of a kid in a candy store to me. ;) There's just so much out there,it's hard to pick one era over another. Depends on the mood I'm in. They were all great in their own right, imo.

Most of the time when I'm on archive I tend to listen to shows I went to. Love the flashbacks, I guess. :)

I would suggest trying a sample from different eras. Can't go wrong with almost anything from a MSG run. They always seemed to be really on top of their game at the Garden. NYE shows were always a blast and a fun listen too.
