Mr. White

In case some (or most) of you don't know who Pat Metheny is, I have copied and pasted a little about his awards from his Interweb site. (And yes, before anybody chimes in to say how unimportant Grammy's are...I know...I know. However, the Jazz awards and many other technical awards are never ever aired on TV. They are not really a popularity contest. They probably reflect what is going on at present in the Jazz world much better than in the Rock and Metal world. We all know the Pop world is very, very well represented on the Grammy's.)

The following is from Pat's Interweb site:

•35 Grammy award nominations
•Winner of 20 Grammy awards, including an unprecedented 7 in a row for 7 consecutive PMG recordings. (The Group has won a total of 10)
•3 Gold Records (Secret Story, Still Live Talking, Letter From Home)
•DownBeat Hall of Fame - Inducted in November, 2013

One of my secret music shames is that when I first moved to Toronto in 1991 right up to his death in 2007, I kept passing, week after week, year after year, on seeing Oscar Peterson perform at a local jazz club in the downtown core. The jazz piano giant gigged almost every weekend at the Montreal Bistro, but I kept putting off seeing him. Yep, you are right to be disgusted with me.

Those I posted earlier got deleted. Here they are with two more under the date only.

My brother and I are going to see the Pat Metheny Unity Group again. This time, they are playing a very small theater in northeast Louisville, the KCD Theater (KCD School - Kentucky Country Day School) on July 27, 2014. The show just went on sale, and there are plenty of good seats left. Here is the link, if anyone is interested.

Well it finally clicked. Bitches Brew got me all tuned up. Right when I wasn't paying attention. Now I'm seeking that good stuff. I like it spacey, deep and dirty. 70s stuff mostly.

Can't get enough of Miles:
Bitches Brew
Live Evil
On the Corner
In a Silent Way
Big Fun

Others:
Herbie Hancock, Jaco Pastorious, Wes Montgomery, Sun Ra, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Pharoah Sanders, Weather Report, many more

Prof rock/Jazz: CAN, Soft Machine

More current:
Medeschi, Martin & Wood, Kamasi Washington, John Schoefield, Snarky Puppy

Nice, bw! I've been listening to the Real Jazz station on Sirius XM a ton lately, and I also dig that funky deep 70s spacy shit you mentioned. Also Chick Corea and Return to Forever! Every Sunday I'm listening to the fusion show and then Marcus Miller and Miller Time -- totally worth checking out if you've got the satellite business.

Try Sonny Sharrock, avant jazz guitarist.  I like this album Ask The Ages even though its from the 90s.  Its got Pharoah Sanders and Elvin Jones on it, too, so Coltrane inspired, for sure.

Looking up some Sonny Sharrock stuff, I stumbled upon this Space Ghost Coast to Coast weirdness cartoon that I had never heard off before, but I'm sure you more culture-saavy dudes are well aware.

Try this one late at night baked like a Frito.

Shug! Glad you stumbled upon SGCtC... a defining show of my college years. And yes, it was almost always consumed late night.

^Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey - 'Betamax'

Some more JFJO right here... below is a bit about this particular project:

"For its 21st album, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey reaches into the dark annals of its hometown's history and emerges with a masterwork: The Race Riot Suite. Written, arranged and orchestrated by Chris Combs, the album is a long-form conceptual piece that tells the devastating story of the 1921 Tulsa race riot-- a real estate-driven ethnocide occurring under the guise of citizen-dispensed justice. The oil-elite, civic government and local press colluded to take advantage of a racially tense climate in Jim Crow-era Oklahoma, resulting in the death of hundreds of black Tulsans and the destruction of an entire city district."
