Until the tapes and comments here, I hadn't heard anything about chatterbugs at the shows.  I watched each night from as close to dead center as I could, about 1/4 or 1/3 of the way between the stage and the sound board.  I like to have a nice full view of the stage, the lights, and in this case, the moon just off to the right of the stage each night.

The sound was beautiful, as usual (kudos to all the hard-working folks in the crew who make that happen with such stunning regularity).  The people there were all lovely too.  Like rkwedge said, the wait staff were perhaps a bit too omnipresent, but it is hard to be too upset about that.

I imagine in a few weeks when the official recordings are released it will be easy to forget about the fact that some people at the shows didn't take in the music as most of us did (or would).

My Last One Big Holiday 2018

I am not one to complain on the boards but I feel like I have been writing this post since the moment I got off the bus and began the check in process. Please do not crucify me as this isnít meant to be anything other than a venting review.  Driving to the resort was completely different than last year. The poor construction sites along the main drive were so depressing. I remember last year the party really began as soon as you got off the bus so I was fine with the shanty town landscape. Please note that I am talking about within the Hardrock grounds. We arrived around 4PM and began the check in process.

As we were walking through the halls it seemed just like the Riveria Maya. Then we walked into great room. Granted there were close to 1500 people in the check in room but the floor was littered with debris. The bar was a hodge podge of fold up tables. I was given warm beer with ice cubes. To cap things off the overwhelming smell of mildew hung thick in the air. The check in line for the event was too long so I continued on to my room.

I found the room to be bigger than last years and was also pleasantly surprised with a view of the main stage. We continued on to the Broken Social Scene show. Once at the stage we began to get the lay of the land. Two bars and two buffet lines. Instead of bamboo with nice wood tops it was metal with vinyl stickers. Presidente is a quality beer which I often drink at home on warm summer days so that was nice surprise. Broken Social Scene was fine but I think with all the frustration with the travel I began to be overserved and donít remember much of that set.

My Morning Jacket took the stage and began playing their first album. I love MMJ but donít know their discography well enough to know they were playing everything in order. They played well and tight as usual. I got to see Picture of You and Phone Went West which are two of my favorite songs.

I got out of bed around 10 the next morning and headed to Toro for breakfast not great. I asked for a water to rehydrate and was given a juice glass filled with a plastic bottle. I get people are concerned about the water there however pouring it out of crinkly plastic bottle doesnít exactly scream luxury. The wait staff expects tips regardless of level service. Thatís not how I operate. Last year I tipped over 400 dollars so its not because I am cheap but I believe tips are earned.

I went down to the beach to meet up with my friends and asked and attendant for a chair. He told me to hold on with his index finger. I waited about 10 minutes before asking another guest if I could use a unattended chair. The beach was fine and the water warm little did I know it was the only day I could get in the water. I am not blaming anyone for the weather just making an observation.

We had Pizza for dinner the second night. Service was quality and the food was fine. We headed to Spoon which was fine except I felt like maybe the lead singer was having issues with hearing and was definitely letting the people on the side of the stage know. He tossed his guitar off to the side of the stage showing no respect for the equipment. I found the keyboardist/ guitarist to doing maybe just a little too much with his head banging and on stage antics. Carl is one of the best guitarist out there and when he gets to shredding it actually looks like heís just in the music not trying to make up for lack luster guitar play.

After reading various social media sites it became apparent MMJ was going to play It still Moves and Z that evening which are monster albums. However being able to follow along on Spotify of what they were going to play kind of took some of the magic away. Watching OBH from the side then having  beer, water bottles and anything else not strapped down to the ground fly through the air was somewhat comical and even more so when I read of people getting hit in the head with full beers. We went to bed immediately after and the thumps from the DJ party made me wish our room was elsewhere on the resort.

We woke up on Sunday and went to Ipanema which had been recommended on social media. It was delicious especially those little triangle hash browns. We got ready for the pools as the water and wind proved to be too much for us out on the beach. We went to a quiet pool at the back of the resort and had a blast. The drinks flowed and I even got touch a monkey. We listened to Hurray for the Riff Raff announce the name of her band no less than 6 times we counted from our balcony. Sylvan Esso tore the stage down great show will definitely have to check them out again. As we werenít that familiar with Portugal the Man we watched that from the balcony the Oasis cover was the highlight. We then filed into the ďSee the Show TheaterĒ for Moon Taxi. They were at capacity somehow so we had to wait. We found the floor to be carpeted and it a little muggy inside. We stayed for a few songs and left. It was overcrowded and I had seen them before and really just wanted to see them at an outside venue. I heard two group of guys make a joke about who needed a beer and then one say  hashtag me too which I thought was funny but the woman in front of them told them that was not cool and just really seemed to overstep her boundaries. We partied pretty hard and checked out the casino and had an all around goodtime.

Monday we woke up ready to catch the last 3 albums played in order. Again went to Ipanema and had a lovely breakfast. We sat by the main pool and enjoyed great people watching and great drink service. The BBQ by the pool was great but I could of done without all the smoke the red sauce was awesome. We got changed and ready for the show and watched from one of the side couches which was awesome. Nathanial Rateliff was fine I had seen him before and wasnít too much different from the last time. MMJ tore it down but again seeing them just play the albums was a bit much for me. I think the final straw of the whole thing was my friend being served some Mama Juana with a cigarette in it.  Again we headed to the Theater where we saw J Roddy whose mix was all messed up. His vocals werenít loud enough and again the atmosphere just wasnít that great. I have seen them more times than I can count so wasnít that disappointed.

I found the resort to be dirtier than last year. I thought the golf carts zipping around with unrestricted exhaust to be a nuisance. The paths could of used a good power washing prior to our arrival. The maintenance schedule had no rhyme or reason. I found the staff to be somewhat accommodating but not what I am used to. I think people were talking a lot during the MMJ sets because they knew what was coming. There were no cheers when that first chord was struck of your favorite song. I get that it was quite a moment in My Morning Jacket history I just wish I had known before. I will not be attending again unless its at another resort. I look forward to my next MMJ show but am glad its over a year away.

Considering you basically heard the Jacket albums for the first time EVER live at OBH4 and didn't even know they were playing them in order (until you went on Spotify while on an island in the Caribbean , on vacation watching the best fucking band in the world play you 3 3 hour plus shows and EVERYTHING they've ever done on an album  ( once again albums you'd never heard all the way through there had to be ...like...50 different surprises even though Spotify told you the song titles) and yet....its fucked? Its not enough? Your complaints are bitter and frankly the length is to a disturbing level that i only thought i was capable of. But at least those are just setlists, not aimless bitching at the greatest fucking band in the motherfucking world giving you the experience of a lifetime, of which you did not partake.

Interesting review, Piton. I'm sorry that people now hate you and curse you out for expressing your opinion. Its sad that we've gotten to that point societally.

Between the exhaust fumes and the cigarette in the food and ice cubes in the beer there were clearly things there that were inexcusable and part of the whole cash grab. On the other hand most participants in this forum who were there thought these were some of the greatest shows ever and those that weren't wish they were due to the albums being played in full. I think its a different and somewhat odd take (knowing what was coming and that dampening the experience) but the more I think about it I think the band anticipated this at T5 and therefore created wild pure-spontaneity "2nd sets" so surprise audience members.

I think the bigger question here is: Why did you go? I don't mean this in the way some others might as in "YOU SHOUDL BE BANNED FROM EVER GOING BECAUSE YOU ARE INSUFFICIENTLY APPRECIATE FOR THE SUPREME LEADER" but rather simply: Why spend thousands of dollars on a band that you're not obsessed with. I genuinely cannot empathize. Considering flights are a fixed price essentially then you're basically choosing between spending X on a really really nice hotel with world class food and incredible amenities and service (i.e. Fairmont Ritz Carlton Four Seasons etc...) or a mediocre hotel with (and everyone going in knew this) mediocre food pretty good service and less than mediocre beer (I will be snobby for a second and tell you emphatically that Presidente is NOT good beer (you should up your game for your own sake)) for X plus $$$.

I genuinely had no idea that "casual fans" (I mean this in the sense of people who don't know an album when they hear it no disrespect) would spend the immense amounts of money on things like this when they could get way better bang for their buck elsewhere. (I knew this when I heard the talking in the recordings but not directly from anyone here). So I ask again in all earnestness: Can you please explain what motivated you to go to this and not to one of the other Carribean Rock Hotel Rentals? Nothing in this line of questioning implies that one should not have the right to spend money as they see fit and voice criticisms of that which they deem deserving of criticism.

Cheers!

I probably wouldn't consider myself a casual fan. I was at OBH 3 and Red Rocks 2016 and maybe a dozen other shows. I have spent probably more than I should have on acquiring and framing posters from other shows. I like the band because the way it makes me feel when they're live. I actually saw on other forms of social media people getting berated for voicing their opinion post shows. I met people last year at OBH3 that that would have been their first show. I was excited to see some of those bands play in a outdoor venue (i.e. J Roddy, Moon Taxi). I also thought the Hard Rock in Mexico was much nicer as did my friends who accompanied me. So I thought Punta Cana would have followed suit. In regard to my loyalty to the band. I could ask the same thing of what drives people to fly to another country and post up on a rail all day with umbrellas and towels covering themselves from the glaring Caribbean sun. How far is too far and how little it too little. To each his own you do you. Whatever driving force led me to write that post I felt I needed to is my choice as is yours to rebuke it. Do I feel robbed of an experience...no. Do I feel like I didn't get my moneys worth...no. Yeah its expensive but if I couldn't afford it I wouldn't have gone. I was just venting. I am happy people had fun. I had a really solid time hanging with my friends and taking in the albums. I also love set list speculation and covers. I am sorry if I ruffled any feathers that was not my intent. I hope the band releases more albums and tours more. Ill be there maybe to the chagrin of others. I hope to see and hear from you all on the boards. Until the next time have a good show.

Cheers

i took the liberty of cherry-picking a few things.

the only thing i found different about the drive to the resort was the time it took.

i agree, whatever happened to those nice, thick, non-crinkly plastic bottles?

equipment abuse is unforgivable. i blame pete townshend.   and there's nothing more off-putting than fake head-banging by lousy musicians.  who does he think he's fooling?

maybe put your phone down for a while?

your post just comes off as someone who was desperately searching for something to complain about.  damn carpet.  and how could the "maintenance schedule" ever cross your mind?

and please, it's "could have" or "could've."  every time someone types "could of" english teachers everywhere cry uncontrollably

sorry you had a less-than-stellar experience. glad you got to touch a monkey.

So I have to say I'm a little chuffed at some of the responses to piton87's review.  I found his observations to be pretty spot on.  And for people to shame him and to say they're glad he won't be attending OBH anymore and to insinuate that he isn't a big enough fan to have gone to One Big Holiday, man, that's just weak.  To criticize his choice of beer, wow, that sort of beer-snobbishness is so uncool (admitting to being a beer snob does not make it cool).  Neither does being a grammar notsee.

Yes, a lot of people have posted about how great OBH4 was, but that doesn't mean it isn't open to criticisms.  For me, this was my third OBH, and I'd consider myself one heck of a fan of MMJ.  That said, I don't really enjoy listening to albums, I prefer listening to live shows, to hear the live versions of the songs, to hear the flow of the show, to hear the great covers and guest spots that MMJ has done in the past, especially at One Big Holiday.  Just look at the downloads of OBH 1 - 3, so many covers, so many collaborations.  So having an expectation of something similar at OBH4 was pretty reasonable.  But when it turned into One Big Album Playback, the spontaneity and some of the fun was just missing.  The excitement of not knowing when your favorite song was going to be played, or if you'd get a white whale played, or who was going to come out and guest on a goofy cover (Mama, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys anyone?) just wasn't there.  Sure, seeing all the albums in their entirety is a pretty big deal, but this was OBH, not T5, where it was announced, and the encores added variety to the magic.

There definitely were some downsides to being in Punta Cana for some.  For me, we had a tv that didn't work for two days, and our in-room fridge had to be replaced.  Sure, the beach was nice, but the tides sure did make that beach unusable.  The beach stage had to get taken down, some of the outdoor shows were moved indoors, where there wasn't enough capacity for the crowd, and the sound was bad.  And the flight from the west coast was just a pain, especially when compared to the very centrally located (for US fans) Riviera Maya.

And again, the larger crowd, the talkers, the downgrade (my opinion) of the concert pavilion food choices; there are all valid issues.  The music definitely was great, even if the MMJ sets were predictable (although I liked swapping Phone and Strangulation's order).  One small disappointment for me was ending with OBH, even though it was already played on night 2.  This was a perfect chance to work in a great cover or two.  For me, and for the girl near the disabled viewing platform who yelled "Play some Petty!" before the encore started, I thought ending with "American Girl" would have been epic!  But alas, it was not to be.

All this being said, I did get two of my white whales, "Into The Woods" and "Moving Away", but I've still yet to hear "Where To Begin".  The other bands who played were great too.  Broken Social Scene kicked things off with a great upbeat set, reminding me a lot of The War On Drugs set in 2015.  Spoon & Nathaniel Rateliff were both great!!  Pres Hall was awesome fun as they always are.  The afternoon sets were a blast, as were Portugal. The Man.  PTM brought some cool covers (Metallica, Pink Floyd, T-Rex and Oasis) that went over really well.  Still can't get into Sylvan Esso (after seeing them three times now - OBH2, Red Rocks in 2015 opening for MMJ, OBH4), but from the posts here and on the Facebook page they clearly have a lot of fans.  A little bummed about the late night sets that were in the theater, couldn't get in.  The food was decent, but nothing different from Riviera Maya in my opinion, although the concert pavilion food wasn't as good.  Check-in / checkout was relatively easy, although we were there a day early.  The staff was very friendly, the resort itself was nice enough.  I felt that the DR was a slightly less well-off Riviera Maya for the most part.

Similar to piton87, I don't feel like I was cheated in any way, just that my experience was different than my two previous One Big Holidays.  And mainly, it came down to the sets that My Morning Jacket played.  Had I known going into it that it was going to be album playback from front to back, with none of the spontaneity of the covers and collaborations, maybe I would have enjoyed the sets a little more.  Again, this was one of my favorite bands playing their entire album catalog straight though, which is a pretty cool thing.  It's just not what I had come to expect from the previous One Big Holidays.  Which I suppose puts a large part of the blame on myself, for having any expectations at all.

And now for the funny part.  Since I prefer listening to live shows instead of albums, when these downloads come out, I'm going to have live shows of every MMJ album to date to listen to.  I bet some of the more obscure, less played tracks will quickly become favorites that I wasn't aware of, hearing them in the live setting.

Alright, enough of my two cents.  My Morning Jacket is a great band, One Big Holiday is a great experience, the people you meet at OBH are great, we need to enjoy it all while we can.  And like piton87 points out, these words are mine, and you have every right to add your two cents as well.

Peace and Love people, Peace and Love

My few observations, yes the food at and all inclusive resort like this is what it is, you have a couple good restaurants and a lot of blah.  Find the good ones and stay with them.
The Riviera Maya was completely renovated in 2014 so it's a lot newer than Punta Cana and yes it showed but it's like anything the older it gets the more wear. Punta Cana is also twice the size as Riviera Maya so more golf carts are needed to move staff from end to end, heck they rolled one right outside my balcony the day we arrived, funnier then shit. Lastly, the indoor theatre was a joke but that all stemmed from Mother Nature putting an end to our late night beach parties. My question there was why night 1 and 2 they just moved it to the main stage and night 3 and 4 it went indoors. there's probably a reason, I just never heard it. Lastly, I will never complain about what they play, just fucking play and I'm in heaven, the vibe of the whole experience is one that's hard to explain but it's the way you wished people treated one another always not just for a week.
Here's a very good write up from Jenni, I think she's put it better than anyone.

I think the late night sets for night 1 & 2 were moved to the main stage because of the easy setup - Pres Hall were already up there with their gear, they really just needed to pack up MMJ's equipment and set up the Pres Hall drum set.  And for night 2, it was just setting up the DJ booth, so for both nights the breakdown / setup was relatively easy for the late night sets.  Not so much for Moon Taxi & J Roddy, unfortunately.

Apologies for my rude comment.
Hope you make it back and enjoy your next OBH

This was my first OBH and boy do I still smile and get goosebumps thinking about what we witnessed. I understand the excitement of trying to guess what will be played next, me and my buddy talked everyday for a week about what they would open with and close with each night and trying to guess covers but when I turned to him after the first 3ish songs in amazement that they were all from TTF I still hadn't grasped what was happening,
When Jim mentioned how special it was that they were playing the songs from TTF and it was the 20th anniversary I thought "ok that makes sense, holy cow can't imagine if they play the whole thing" then they did...then they played At Dawn and I lost my mind.

The whole next day our crew was just speculating "how could they possibly fit the remaining albums in their next 2 nights" and we still had doubts they would play the remaining discography, "I said, if those opening chords of Mahgeetah start, this place is going to explode" and it happened and it was life-changing. That night of It Still Moves and Z and a full Cobra, best musical experience of my life.

Night 3 was probably the best "off-night" I could've asked for, I love SE, PTM and Moon Taxi (count me in on those disappointed about the indoor stage, but I still had a blast in there).

Night 4 was amazing, my GF got to hear Thank You Too! which I had pretty much promised she would hear (thank goodness she did or I would've been in hot water) and I got to hear Remnants and Librarian +some others obvs.

As for the resort, thought it was great, although I'm a pretty simple guy, don't need much, did get a little tired of eating meat and carbs and was ready for a nice fresh salad when I got home.

Can't wait to get the downloads and put them all in one playlist, press shuffle and enjoy for the next year until we get some new music(fingers crossed).

Again, apologies for my rude comment about not wanting you back at the next one, can't wait to be back at OBH5

Anytime

@MMJTX - It's probably true for most of us, your first OBH is the best OBH.  It's just such a cool event.  The location is beautiful, the warm breezes, the free flowing booze, the nonstop music, going to bed knowing tomorrow you get to do it all over again.  For me, OBH2 was just over the top, and that was my first OBH.  Once you get accustomed to going, it's hard not to go the next year, even if you're on the west coast and the flights to the DR are a little rough.

It's the music that keeps us coming back.  My Morning Jacket's music.  The other bands are just a great big bonus!!!

Lots of good follow up points.  The first time doing anything, is the best and once you go you will want to go back!

The one thing I stressed on the "Thank you, we want to hear from you" survey was, "the need to pick up the cans and cups they are serving during the show"!  My wife was very impressed that as each time a woman left a stall, they mopped and wiped it down.   I had no issue knowing song x was next and what song would be my first time hearing.  This scheduled my pee breaks.

I think one thing everyone's missing here is the spontaneity within these versions of the songs played at OBH4 especially the rare ones like If All Else Fails, If It Smashes Down, By My Car, One in the Same etc. I also noticed changes and culminations of all previous jams and riffs that a song had gone through onstage from its creation until 2018 all within the same song. Its fantastic. Masterplan is a great candidate for that. The spontaneity is there my friends.

I have no problem when someone voices an opinion or criticism of this band I've had many, but it's just my interpretation that you had been taking OBH4 for granted.  Im probably wrong.

I did think it was tacky to end with Magic Bullet then OBH again and done....coulda fit a few covers in there to please everyone.  But man... three 3 hour shows....wow

Neither does being a grammar notsee.
there are 2 possible responses:

thanks for correcting me, now I won't make the same mistake again.

or

you're a grammar nazi.

really, it just hurts my brain to read "could of."

punta cana wasn't free of problems, but I just think you had to be actively searching for issues to find them.  all in all I prefer the hard rock riviera maya, but i'll have no problem going back to the dominican republic.

Slappymoe - I'd like to withdraw my grammar notsee comment with apologies.  Your comment wasn't on anything I said, but still rubbed me wrong, kinda how "could of" does to you.  I get where you're coming from, there are definitely words & phrases that just get under my skin when they are used in conversation.

I'm with you on the preference for the Riviera Maya, but, like you, I'll most likely have no problem going back to the DR for OBH5.

Again, my apologies.

I agree with you Lonn, about the versions of the songs, about how they were played.  I remember liking how 'Lowdown' sounded, in particular.  There were others as well, the memory is just a little foggy these days.  That's why WE NEED THE DOWNLOADS ALREADY!!!!
