poignant stuff on an icon. I've come to love 50/60s R&B as much as any period of music in history. The talent is otherworldly, from the singers to the backing bands (she had King Curtis back her at the famous Live at Fillmore West shows) that it's hard for me to see how any period or evolution of music could mean more to this country than that time. I believe those Fillmore West shows are on Youtube, go check em out.
Don't you ever turn it off

Guide me, PLEASE!!  I'm with you on thinking that 50/60's R&B/Soul music is as important as any period in music, but I get overwhelmed.  There's just so much I don't know!  Can you point me in the direction of any particularly essential compilation or even a starting point?? Any guidance is appreciated

I think for Aretha her first and third albums on Atlantic are essential and the peak for her recordings.  Jerry Wexler producing, Tom Dowd engineering, the Muscle Shoals house band backing, Aretha singing and playing piano live in real time while they recorded, this is the real deal.  We played them both way up loud this weekend and were blown away all over again by her soul power.

Totally agree with parkervb about how important soul music is.  I realized this weekend that every band and musician that I like has got to have some soul influence and most of the ones I don't like just don't have it.  If it ain't got soul, its got nuthin'!

Another way to go to get the cream is to get a good compilation album from Stax, Motown and Atlantic records (there is some overlap between Atlantic and Stax due to distribution deal they had for awhile)

consider these, just for example, but there are so many to choose from.

https://www.allmusic.com/album/stax-50-a-50th-anniversary-celebration-mw0000452604

And for more context there are good documentaries about all this mind-blowingly fantastic music.  Try Standing In the Shadows of Motown, Respect Yourself: the Stax Story and Muscle Shoals dvds.
