It's actually pretty addicting.  It records the music you listen to on your computer.  You can be "friends" with other people, join groups, tag music, list shows you are going to, share music.  love it.

That is only semi-accurate!  A lot of the music I listen to isn't on my computer.  So there are about 25 bands on my computer right now.  It doesn't have enough storage to put everything I want on there, but I listen to a lot of stuff.  So maybe we have more bands in common  ;)

you can "join" shows that you are going to see, then write reviews.  you can also tag music, get new friends to recommend you music.  also, there's a "recommendation" radio that last.fm provides based on the music you listen to.  also, it's just cool to find people that share your musical interest and to have it tally what you listen to.

i'm sorta addicted to it  :)
