Late to the game, I started Deadwood today. Just finished episode 4. I'll admit, the incessant profanity seems outta place but adds to the campiness. Hate seeing characters I'm getting attached to die. I got enough of that in Breaking Bad and Walking Dead. Hope to catch a couple more tonight, once the kids are in bed.

The dialogue is accurate to the era and setting. Show creator David Milch researched dialogue for a year before the show went into production. It's hard to prove if the real people such as Al Swearengen and Calamity Jane swore as much as the show potrays (they no doubt didn't pontificate like they do on the show), but no doubt those two cocksuckers cussed a fucking shitload.

Deadwood "campy"? No goddam fucking way. It's about the grittiest, most realistic and one of the best fuckin' westerns ever produced.

Maybe "campy" is a poor choice of word, but the realism has a garnish of humor to which the profanity (accurate or otherwise) adds. I do question terms like pussy, c#nt, or motherfucker being used with much, if any, frequency in 19th century America, but what the fuck do I know?

Some of the more old slang cusses were replaced since they have long since died out, aren't as offensive when compared to today's usage (bitch, damn...)  and/or sound funny. The c-word was around, same with cocksucker, but both may not have been perceived as offensive as they are in modern times.

am about 4 episodes into season one of Key & Peele.  Hilarious!

i work on a very old studio lot (it was Republic Pictures back in the day).  the long hall that is the main entrance is lined with enormous posters of landmark films and popular shows made at or by the studio ("It Happened One Night," "Gilda," "Easy Rider," "Dexter," "Heroes"). this morning as i was walking down the hall i saw two men taking down the poster for "Eureka" and putting one up for "Key & Peele!"  it's of President Obama and his Anger Translator, Luther.

as i passed them i said, "hell yeah!  i love that show!"

side bar:  the show i work on enjoyed a nice bump in ratings last night!  got my job for another week.  THANKS AMERICA!

seriously great show that has just not been able to capture a big enough audience.

one of my favorite shows of all time.  I just loved the dialogue.  Would love to re-watch the series, been on the lookout for a deal on the DVDs.

Fully

I just started watching Master's of Sex on Showtime. It follows Master's and Johnson's research. Set in the late 50's, it's quite fascinating. So far only four episodes have been broadcast, this past weekend Showtime replayed the first three and then Sunday night was the fourth episode. Obviously lots of sex in the show, but the character's are well written and very interesting.

Boardwalk Empire has been great this season. One of the best-written and acted shows on TV. It's a crying shame, and disgrace, that it gets only the fraction of viewers that the heavy average/massively overrated The Walking Dead receives.

Come Closer

I recently finished the first season of Orange Is the New Black. I remember thinking it would be mediocre based on the trailer, but I was completely wrong. Good stuff. The other show I really liked from this year is Ray Donovan. Strong to quite strong.

Takes place in St. Louis.  Who would have thought in conservative Missouri!

two of my favorite programs kick off new seasons this month:

The Americans and Portlandia.

The Americans was probably the best non-Breaking Bad drama I saw all of 2013.  And, Portlandia is just perfect satire.

Just finished watching season three of BBC's Sherlock. I love that show too much.

The previews of The Americans I've been seeing look like it's going to be a pretty good season...

Been enjoying some new shows on Comedy Central lately - @Midnight and Broad City have had me cracking up. Workaholics has been good too this season.
Just watched the season 2 premiere of Hannibal on demand, my favorite new show of last year. Off to a great start so far.
That's motherfuckin' John Oates!

True Detective is incredible.  I haven't been engrossed in a show this much since Breaking Bad
