BBC's excellent Man Who Cycled The World finished last night. In 2007 Mark Beaumont broke the Guinness WR for cycling solo round the world. After surviving dangerous roads (dirt tracks) in India, the monsoon in Thailand & the outback in Australia etc he got knocked off his bike (by someone jumping a red light) & mugged in the US  :-/
God will forgive them. He'll forgive them and allow them into Heaven.....I can't live with that.

i watched the VH1 Classic Albums-Steely Dan-Aja again last night. that is one of the best episodes...DF and WB were the original hipsters, not these indie poseurs you see today..that album is so rich. it just doesn't seem like anyone is making that kind of music today (not that other things aren't good)

anyone else enjoying the new season of weeds?

i also started watching the new series that comes on after weeds-- it's called nurse jackie. edie falco, peter facinelli... it's pretty good. it's not the greatest show i've ever seen, but it's good.

unrelated note: man, i am SO sick of seeing jon and kate all over the news 24/7. guess joel mchale called it when he predicted the forthcoming series, "jon minus nine."

New The Cleaner. Awesome episode and Gary Cole was great! All that was missing were msy's skillful 6 panel spins and fancy fade in & outs...crazylove and I really enjoy this show.

Ha!  Just noticed last night that my DVR picked up Ep One of the new season!   I'm sure it's not nearly as well put together this year.  ;)

Just watched "The Joneses" again today to ck out the 6 panel spins and noticed for the first time that the characters change positions upon the spin. Really nice effect msy put together! Great episode, shows the infiltration of drugs upon the upper set, and also emphasizes the solidity of marriage as the husband stays with her and supports her recovery.

We traded in Showtime for NFL Network.  That show is basically the only thing I watched on that channel, but it really sucks to not be able to see the new episodes.  And they're not on hulu!!!  I'm jonesin'

Just finished all five seasons of The Wire. I really enjoyed it, but I still think The Sopranos is better.

QuoteJust finished all five seasons of The Wire. I really enjoyed it, but I still think The Sopranos is better.

Theyre both fantastic. I think it kind of comes down to small details and preferences when its all said and done.  I saw the entire Sopranos series before I started The Wire and didnt think I'd ever see a show that I thought was better than The Sopranos, but I think The Wire is better.  Im not sure which show I enjoy more, because I think thats closer, but I think all around The Wire is a better show - script, characters, acting, depth of story, suspense, etc.

As The Wire went on, IMO it actually got even better. I dont think I can say that about Sopranos.

I think I remember you starting out The Wire almost 6 months ago though, so I do think its good you didnt cram it in to like 1-2 months (like I did) because I think that can make it harder to appreciate and you can miss how much the story really builds, evolves, and changes.

What'd you think of the Season 5 finale?

Down to 5 out of 234 episodes of Beaver to watch. It is getting harder and harder the further I go. Just got "Beaver's Report Card" the other day where Eddie gets ahold of Beaver's report card and changes his D- in Math to a B+ unbeknownst to Beaver. Needless to say, Theodore has some 'splainin to do to the Warden as he has no idea how it was changed...

What'd you think of the Season 5 finale?

After I realized I was skipping past parts after the opening credits, I stopped watching for about a month or so. I then rewatched season one and went from there. It was cool to watch season one again anyway, I picked up on a couple things I missed. I did cram a couple seasons in to catch up and then slowed down the last couple seasons.

I liked the finale. One of the themes of the show was the ongoing drug war and how things continue on in a cycle. They addressed that in the finale with Michael becoming a stick-up boy like Omar and Dookie becoming a homeless scheming junkie like Bubbles. I like what they did with Bubbles in the last season, after being put through hell in season 4.

SPOILER

Yeah, I thought the finale was great (although sad to see Dookie end up like that). The cycle thing was a huge theme in nearly all aspects of the show with the most apparent one being Avon -> Marlo probably. I thought it was great how they really didnt leave any loose ends with any characters either so you didnt wonder what would happen with McNulty, etc.

The only 2 things I had a problem with were:
-Omar going out like that. Sure it's ironic and Im assuming thats what David Simon was going for, but to kill off one of the biggest characters in the show in that fashion was disappointing. It shouldve been all guns blazing like Omar wouldve wanted.
-And to a lesser degree, I didnt like how they had Greggs turn McNulty in. Unlike the problem I had with Omar, this is less changeable because youre going off someone's morals and ethics in this case, but I dont remember anything in any season that would give me reason to think Greggs would turn McNulty in before she actually did. I figured just like Bunk, Lester, Carver, and Sydnor, she would surely be with them and just want Marlo behind bars. I guess you could say this was more plausible because the entire showed it seemed like McNulty could never come out ahead of the game, but I just didnt believe Greggs would due that based on how her character was presented in 5 seasons of the show.

Those are seriously my only gripes about the finale/last few episodes, and really the show in general though.
