I really want to bail on my graduate program. I'm done with all of my credits and all that's left is a written thesis, oral exams and an exhibition, but the faculty won't let me do these things until next spring (2008). They say it's because I'm not ready, but I suspect it's because they need my labor. That means I can't apply for a tenure-track teaching position that starts next fall, but will instead have to carry on with this bullshit adjunct stuff for another year or find some other temporary thing. I am so frustrated because I really want to get out of this area and move on with my life. It would be a shame to jump ship now but I really need a break from academia. Sometimes I really think that art just doesn't work in an institution anyway. uggh. Thanks for this space to vent. I'm probably just in escapist mode because I just had a taste of the outside world for a few days.

Feel for you dear. I am a certified teacher in NE, IL, MO, IA, CO, MI and many others yet I work for Nestle Purina. Go figure. Of course it could be because most high school kids really do not care much about American History especially 20th century. That be why I schlep pet food/litter instead.

don't give up! i took a semester off, and i hate myself for it. now i work 12-hour days (like today) and wish, wish, wish i could just be in class. but i am sure it is different in a graduate program... more stress... but i am pulling for you! you can do it!

Thanks, Meg! The details of my story are long and boring so I'll skip telling them now. In summary I taught at the college level for 5 years before this program and now feel/and am treated like I was never a grown-up and it affects me because I feel like I should have finished this degree years ago. But, I should set my ego aside, stick it out and get the stupid credential. It helps to have people like you pulling for me.

Sorry to hear that. Have you ever tried the private school route? Also, did you go to Cornell? I saw the Big Red reference and was curious. I went there as an undergrad.

Went to school in Nebraska. Go Big Reg is for my beloved Huskers. Privates schools in Omaha, and here in the hickish Illinois suburbs of St Louis, pay crappy. Even schools for the over privleged paid kinda crappy. Plus I make at least double then what I would as a teacher outside of teaching. Lot less rewarding though :(

So I was sitting here and the phone rang...it was some lady saying they need someone to come over and give last rights to a baby. I was like 'Uh....what!?". She was like "Is this Sacred Heart?" Um, no. She had the wrong number. But it freaked me out a little. :-/
Now I know that some baby is dying as I type this. Fuck.
