I'm self employed & have my own English School so it's up to me.
I could keep the face furniture if I wanted to but I'm aware of the fact that most of my mothers would prefer me not to have a beard A) because facial hair is considered eccentric here & B) because they like the idea of being their children being taught by a 'cool, good-looking' foreigner. Please don't think I'm saying I think I'm good looking...
The Japanese are in love with western culture. They love Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt etc. When I shave my head in the summer the mothers giggle & say I look like Beckham, when I keep it short & tidy they giggle & say I look like Keanu Reeves in Speed, when I don't shave they smile uncomfortably & say "oh, you haven't shaved Andrew Sensei." I don't look anything like these people but like I said, the Japanese are in love with western culture. They want to be able to tell their friends "my daughter's English Teacher looks like..."
Haha. It's ridiculous, I know but I have a much better chance of the mother signing up & joining my school tomorrow if I'm clean shaven.

i'm 26 and very heavily afflicted with the bumfluff syndrome.  i can grow a 'stache well and pretty quickly, but i have no luck with a beard.
