You have a smartphone sticky? If you do just do a google search of the beer when you're in the store, usually the first page will be the beer advocate page for that beer and you can scope its rating. That's what I do for beers I don't know. If its above 90 I usually give it a taste, if it's below 85 I usually pass.
Has anyone found a good app along these lines?  Something that might scan barcodes and go to a ratings site?  Sounds like a good idea.
Good point Yac.  I'd been thinking about that too because I've been doing the quick search ala Lady and Walter.  Any favorites anyone?  I'm downloading ratebeer for droid right now.  Something with a buddy's list would be great!

Ok so I just tried my RateBeer app.  Its got a nice easy user interface but took it into my fridge and it didn't recognize Stone's Smoked Porter, Heavy Seas' Siren Noire or Lagunitas' Cappuccino Stout.  The only one it did recognize was my Le Merle Saison.  Perhaps it's better with more year around beers or has a small user base.  It seemed to be rather highly rated.  Will check out some more.

Everything from Founders is top notch.  Dirty Bastard is indeed delish, and the Backwoods Bastard is even better.

Just thought I'd post this.  There's a a great little neighborhood pub over here that changes their beers regularly.  This is just their tap list for the day but it's nice for a hole in the wall.  The bar seats about 12 people with some tables and a small upstairs.  The best part is that everyday from 4-7, 12 oz. mugs of any of the non blackened beers go for 3 for $5.  Yeah, 3 for $5.  I just wish it was closer to my house.  ONe of their great things is the 100 beer club where you can actually follow your progress online until you hit 100 different beers consumed at their establishment.

That looks like a great place to go have a beer or three, Ruckus! I wish it were closer too.

I've been having a Dirty Bastard or two every Tuesday, to "loosen up" for my banjo lesson.  I've got an hour to kill between work and my lesson.  It works!  They are delicious.

Looks like this trend may be on a hiatus though...most likely giving up beer for Lent...I know, I know, Lent has already started, but...DO I HAVE TO?!  We'll see how this goes.
We could.

That list is impressive for a small place.  There's a place in Columbus, OH that has a HUGE list.  It's called Bodega's, in the Arena district.  It gets pretty packed in there...it's pretty small, too...but their selection is just ridiculous.  I usually end up sitting outside and people watching.

Damn, that's a lot of breweries represented!

I just had one of these from Breckenridge Brewery last night at a local establishment:

It's a double IPA.  I'm usually not a big fan of Breckenridge beers, but this was surprisingly tasty.  I'm going to have to see if the local beer store has any sixers of this.

ALady

I've never much been a fan of IPAs, and really hated that trend a few years back of hopping the shit out of everything, but I am so into DIPAs lately.  Tried a really nice one last weekend from a local brewpub, Haymarket - old head brewer from one of our Rock Bottoms opened up his own place.

Can't wait till next weekend - all cask tasting with charcuterie and cheese  :)

Great!  >:(

Like I need another hobby.

Not that I don't drink plenty of beer as it is.  ::)

Once again this forum finds me another way to spend time and money.

I visited Barb's Beer Emporium in Concord, NH for the first time today.  This is where my wife gets me my Belgian Beer collection each Christmas.

from the last 2 years:

So, I've got no idea what is good, what I'd like, what you guys have recommended, so I just snagged a couple of bottles for now...

I'll give 'em a taste tonight while watching MMJ on the IFC Independent Spirit Awards.

I'm also using the Untappd and BrewGene iPhone apps.

Can anyone recommend a good site for this noob?

The fact that my heart's beating is all the proof you need.

Johnny- If it's Belgian, and it's a Trappist made or an Abby Style, IT'S GOOD. Trust me. The Belgians know their shit when it comes to making dubbels, tripels, and quads. Based on the pics you showed, you have some excellent drinking ahead for you my man. Look into these other Beglian ales (Orval is OUTSTANDING): Rocheport, Westmalle, and St. Bernardus.

Glad you got to experience some of the local beer. Yes, the Chocolate Stout at the Tap Room is no joke. The New Zealand IPA is fab also. Four Hands is around the the corner from my office. Good stuff. Where any of the food trucks out that night? Also, glad you got to experience my favorite Vietnames place.
