You septics don't know shit about good beer!  ;)

Anything by Badger Ales (Poachers Choice, Golden Champion, Golden Glory, Blandford Fly etc)

Youngs (Directors, London Special Ale, Oatmeal Stout)
http://www.youngs.co.uk/

Fullers (ESB, London Pride, London Glory, Honey Dew)
http://www.fullers.co.uk/

+ Green King IPA, Old Speckled Hen, Abbot Ale, John Smith's if there's nothing else...

I like Budvar & Pilsner Urquell. I drank some fantastic beers in in the Czech Republic, can't remember the names of any of them.

Kinfisher, Cobra & Maharaja are all good.

Sam Adams is my fav US beer, I enjoyed Fat Tire when I was there last year, Brooklyn Lager is good too...
God will forgive them. He'll forgive them and allow them into Heaven.....I can't live with that.

Hmmm.

Guinness, Bass, Harp, Smithwicks, Bodingtons, Newcastle are all in major rotation in my liver. Enjoy many of the fine tasty brews from the other St Louis Brewer, Schlafly.

Like Jaimoe I enjoy Kronnenberg, it's just hard as fuck to find.

Love a good IPA

I'm intriqued by the brews that DB busted out from Badger. Those looked really good.

Had many other oddball stuff, just cannot remember the names of a lot of them. One in particular is Skullsplitter from Orkney Brewery. Very dark very good. No skull splitting the next day.

Newcastle will probably always remain my favorite readily available beers

I love getting Newcular  :D

& yet your all time fav is an Ale originally brewed in the UK?

Nothing wrong with NB, it's not a bad pint but most serious drinkers in the UK grow out of it in their teens & move on the many other (much better!) ales our fine country has to offer.

Why not get yourself over there & give some a try? Oh no wait, you're from the US right? Probably haven't even left your state, let alone have a passport  ;)

Ive certainly had some better brews than Newcastle, but its just got the perfect flavor and balance of body and malts to me. Not light at all, but not heavy either. I can drink the stuff like water.

And Ive been to few other countries, with no passport bc Im gangsta like that, but the UK would probably not be in my top 10 if I leave the country again.

As for the US, since Im bored and its halftime in the NC game, lets see. Ive been to PA, NJ, NY, DE, MD, DC, CT, MA, NH, VT, ME, WV, VA, NC, SC, GA, FL, OH, KY, IN, IL, WI, IA, CA....and maybe Rhode Island, and Montana shortly since my Pops moved out there last year.

So Ive been to 23 states and 1 district, plus Puerto Rico, St Thomas, St Maarten, Aruba, and Curacao....Id say thats farely well traveled for a 24 yr old if I say so myself.

Time to crack a fresh brew now, in honor of traveling  :)

QuoteWatch out though, Bud especially has begun ripping off the craft brewers by mimicking their styles. Example: Shocktop Ale and few other seasonals that come out bearing no indication of their parent company.

NY has some good brews, especially the Saranacs.

I believe the prime hops-growing regions of the country are in PA, NY, Ore, and Washington with a little bit of CO

I had Saranac Lake Pale and it was excellent. I brought 6 back across the border as well as 12 Cooperstown Pale.

Parts of the lower Prairie Provinces (Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba) in Canada are the prime hop growing areas.

I always think its' funny how the worst of Canadian culture is what becomes popular here. I have beers from Russia, Belgium, Germany, Austria, and Mexico at my store, but the only Canadian beer is Labbats and Molson.

And of course, all we get musically is Nickelback and BNL.

Ah, but Labatt and Molson - the latter is the 5th largest in the world - are huge brewers and together they own or make well over 50-60 different beers, including micos. For example, Keith's from Halifax is owned by Labatt and it's one of Canada's most popular beers. Americans always call beer made from Labatt's or Molson "Molson" and "Labatt" since the majority of brands aren't exported to the US. Unfortuantely, both of those companies also brew their own version of US brands like MGD and Bud (both are stronger, alcohol-wise).

And one more thing: even brands like Blue and Canadian don't taste the same north of the border. I've had export Canadian in the US and it sucks ass. Blue always sucks though.

And you get many more bands than BNL and Nickelback in the US, but many folks wouldn't think acts like Broken Social Scene, Neil Young, Feist, Leonard Cohen, The Band etc... are Canadian. You can have Celine Dion, Nelly Furtado, Our Lady Peace, Sum 41 and Diana Krall.

capt. scotty

Since it always pisses me off when people keep abbreviating stuff and I have no idea what it is, who is BNL??!?!?!?

And I think you forgot Avril Lavigne

Barenaked Ladies.  Shouldn't that just be BL?  Or would that be more confusing?

God sure baked a lot of fruitcake, baby.

Yes, BL would seem to be the appropriate acronym....Gracias!

Not that I probably wouldve figured that out if it was just BL anyway, hah

Going to school in Syracuse it was always BNL

And yes, you gave us lots of CLASSIC rock, and we thank you, but I'm talking about now. I mean it took Syracuse for me to even hear of the Hip, and whatever your feelings on that, without them I would have never looked into a lot of other bands.

I used to compete in the Rock Paper Scissors tourney in Ontario (came in top 16 in ought six) and I got a kick out of the different varieties. Molson XXX there is far from Molson XXX here.

But that's my point - why is it that an imaginary line becomes such a damn obstacle?

Oh well, no matter. Helped a friend install a 3-keg kegerator today. His wall of fame is much more expanded than mine. But he reminded me of the Smokebeer that I got a few weeks back.

Ever have a smoke beer? It's really just bacon beer, except it's not as awesome as you'd imagine the marriage of two of the greatest things in the world to be.

I was gonna mention that, but I had read the Tiger went under.

For what it's worth, last time I was there they had Young's Chocolate and Arrogant Bastard on Tap and were playing a live, acoustic Neil Young set in its entirety.

Also, if you have kids, they seem to be fam friendly.

I'll explain smoke beer after I get to work and get 2 more cups of coffee in me.

I think this is the new location, I was never at the old one, but from what you described, especially the music it seems the same! I think the old one was on Hudson Street.

Last time there they were playing great selections from the whole Kinks discography! I had many Brooklyn Larger Weisse's and a pear cider that I can't remember the name of, hence how good they were!

Smokebeer

About 15 mins from my house is a bar called the Clover Leaf (in Caldwell, NJ) where they have an MBA Program (Masters in Beer Appreciation). It's card with 45 beers on it and each time you order one you check it off the list. At 15 beers you get a $15 gift card towards any growler of beer to bring home, at 30 beers the same, but $30. At 45 you get your own special mug and the 1st tuesday of every month is member tuesday where it's like buy one beer get two free or something sickeningly awesome like that. My only complaint is that their jukebox doesn't have any ween, unlike The Shepherd and Knucklehead, another awesome Jersey Dive which has Paintin' the Town Brown on the juke.

Anyway, being a former stoner, there's still a little in me where when I see the word "Smoke" and I"m buzzed I get giggly. The beer is on my MBA list, so I order it and my friends all make a scene saying that's the most pothead thing to do.  Whatever.

I get the beer, thinking "smokebeer" is like the Lagunitas Chronic or something like that - just a marketing ploy. Nope. It's a beer that when they roast the barley or malt or whatever, they smoke it using hickory or another wood.

The minute you pop the top on the beer, it smells like bacon. Sweet, delicious bacon. I'm no vegetarian, nor am I Jewish, but I typically avoid pork. But I cannot avoid bacon. And the first smell of this is pure, 100% unadulterated bacon. And it's beer. And it's dark, which is my favorite kind of beer. So, I figure this must be the greatest consumable item on the face of the earth: Bacon flavored beer. And it wasn't horrible, but you have to understand I expected this to be the gastronomical equivalent of MMJ doing a set list of my choosing in my living room. It turned out to be more like the message about Candles and Panties on the mainpage. It's awesome, but at the same time, WTF?

It is extremely heavy and it came in a 22 oz bottle. Like Mitch Hedberg says about pancakes, "...all exciting at first, but by the end you're fuckin' sick of 'em". I thought I was done drinking, but I got down a bottle of Anchor Steam and finished my girlfriend's Octoberfish afterwards.

It's still worth trying, but bring a friend or 4.

Nope, the bleeker location is where I was last November ('07) before heading to Peculiar to finish my night with imports and nudey nudey touch touch. They had a fire going and everything.

One place I suggest avoiding despite the beer list is Burp Castle. I don't know where it is anymore, but it was not a good experience.

Also, Blind Tiger was near Peep, the Thai restaurant where the bathrooms are behind one-way glass and they play asian porn the whole time on a TV screen, but you don't know that until you're sitting there eating and say to yourself "hey, that's porn"

They have a few varieties of smoke beer alone, plus they make more normal brews. I think Beeradvocate put the same sort of review out re: bacon.
