QuoteLittle Children: Mme Bovary in America, not brilliant but good
I have that & Old Joy on pre-order in the same shipment. Have you read the book? The book was very good.
The same guy also wrote Election (Tom Perrotta) I've not read the book but it was an excellent movie:

300-not quite the history buff my son is, but enjoyed it more than I thought I would. It actually piqued my interest to learn a little more about the event.     It is somewhat "stylized" (for lack of a better term) like Sin City (really did not care for leading to some trepidation about this viewing) but it seems like they toned it down a bit so it was more palatable. Not for the faint of heart as there is a lot of brutalization, killing etc.

QuoteI watched Half Nelson this weekend. It was depressing. I don't ever want to end up like Ryan Gosling's character.

Yeah, definitely depressing. I really liked that movie, though.

Saw this movie called Shortbus, which was the most sexually explicit "regular" movie (netflix approved) I've seen. I had no idea what it was about in advance other than it was by the writer/director star of Hedwig and the Angry Inch and that it dealt with relationships in the NYC underground club scene. For being as graphic as it was, though, it was really about so many things other than sex involving several really compelling characters and their struggles to be in relationships. I guess a lot of it was improvised and the cast was mostly 1st time actors. Anyway, not the greatest, but more to it than what one might initially think.

Saw 'Funny Ha Ha' in the week - anyone else see it?

Notes on a Scandal.  Judy Dench is fantastic.

I might have to watch it again, though, as I got horribly drunk whilst the film was on; our local cinema has a bar, nice little tables and swivel chairs.  Here's a link:

REGARDING Krzysztof Kieslowski's trilogy TROIS COULEURS:

I was supposed to watch Rogue tonight, but couldn't make it to my buddies house to finish up the trilogy.

bleu was pretty forgettable. i honestly walked out of the movie and had legitamately forgotten what i had just watched. (and under the influence of nothing). but i did like it when i was watching it.
meh.

i liked blanc a whole lot more. but now that i think about it, it was equally forgettable.

none of them have anything to do with eachother, but are nonetheless considered a trilogy.
if i ever get a chance to watch rogue i'll let you know how it is.
and i hope you'll do the same.

all in all, i'm pretty glad i watched both and hope i have a chance to watch the last one.
but i am in no rush.

Volver
by Pedro Almodovar

Nearly sublime. I was very impressed with Penelope Cruz's performance. Hadn't really thought much of her before (other than thinking she's really hot). She definitely earned that Academy Award nomination for this. Any other Almodovar fans out there? I love him more with each film, but I still think Bad Education and All About My Mother are my favorites.

Anyone seen 'Old Joy' starring Will Oldham. It's playing tonight at the University of Louisville and I'm going. The sound track is provided by Yo La Tengo. Sounds good to me.

I did feel that Bad Education was a little all over the place and not as emotionally rich as AAMM. I guess it's quite a feat to keep both a genuine and an ironic sensibility at play concurrently, and I definitely see areas where it doesn't work. But, there are some absolutely hauntingly surreal scenes in it, particularly the scene where, while on a class trip,  the young boy sings Moon River as the priest who is obsessed with him plays guitar. Oh, the sound of his voice in that context.

I can't seem to log out of this site for some reason. anyway, GRINDHOUSE!!!!!!!!
It was so fucking awesome. They really pulled out all the stops to indulge each and every libidinal movie fantasy they've probably had since they were teens. I highly recommend it.

Shane Meadows was on the Culture Show last night, and the interview and clips from the film really took me back to the early 80s.  This Is England will be a must-see over the summer.
