QuoteI enjoyed Once but wasn't what I expected. I thought there'd be more of a romance but it never really got going. In that sense its more of an honest film to me. That kind of makes it that much more depressing to me though, having been through similar bullshit. Music was great though.

The movie was really romantic, but not in a conventional sense. I never once thought it was depressing. You are the only person or reviewer that I've heard say that it was depressing. In fact, the film was uplifting since it shows how music can connect with like-minded strangers, bringing with it a spiritual friendship that is far deeper and more meaningful than a physical relationship. The ending was fantastic.

maybe depressing isn't the word. i did really like the film. but if your a hopeless romantic, it certainly doesn't give you much encouragement.

I'm a hopeless romantic and it is one of the most honest romantic films I've ever seen, on par with Casablanca, unconventional romance-wise. Remember the scene when the pair were standing on the cliff looking out at the ocean and "The Girl" says something to Glen in Czech? What do you think she said to him? You don't have to understand the words to understand what she said. Like I've been implying, this is a slice of life-type natural love story. The duets are spiritual non-physical love-making.

yeah i agree with what your saying, i don't think thats the issue. we both agree in its honesty. i didn't mean to say it was depressing but it did strike a nerve with me. thats what good films are supposed to do. the songs are very uplifting, but the pain that caused the songs was very real. its frustrating to have that kind of chemistry with someone and it doesn't work out the way you want it to.
That's motherfuckin' John Oates!

You know what, it worked out the way the characters wanted it to. We as an audience wanted it to end up in a Hollywood fashion, but it's so real the way it ended, and far more realistic and in it's own way, beautifully perfect. Man, those fucking songs either gave me chills or made me well-up with tears because of their beauty and emotional honesty. Once is my favourite film this decade.

Mathieu Amalric - the villain in new Bond film Quantum Of Solace - has revealed he modelled his character to some extent on Tony Blair.
The French actor said: "I've been taking details, the smile of Tony Blair, the craziness of Sarkozy (French President), he's the worst villain we've ever had.
"He's really dangerous. In fact he walks around thinking he's in a Bond film."  ;D

Quantum of Solace?!!  :-/

God will forgive them. He'll forgive them and allow them into Heaven.....I can't live with that.

Eastern Promises - exceptional! Best film I've seen in a while alongside Atonement (also released by Focus Features). Viggo Mortensen was excellent, as was Vincent Cassel & Armin Mueller-Stahl. Horribly dark & yet strangely touching & almost uplifting.
Once or twice I almost forgot that I was watching a Cronenberg movie (although the scene @ the bath house soon reminded me!)

I remember watching his earlier films as a horror movie fiend in my teens; Shivers, Rabid & Scanners etc. I think it's interesting to note that Viggo Mortensen, who has starred in his last 2 movies, is most famous for his work with Peter Jackson, another director who started out making B-horror movies on next-to-nothing budgets, just like Cronenberg (Bad Taste, Braindead etc)

I loved Howard Shore's score too.

I flipped on the Soundtrack channel the other night & caught the Flaming Lips song from the soundtrack

QuoteEagle Vs. Shark was good and yet depressing too at the same time. I've read comparisons to Napoleon Dynamite, witch there are. The difference is Napoleon was a guy you wanted to root for. Jemaine Clements' character Jarrod, was just sort of a jerk. Didn't expect it to be more about Lilly's perspective though. There was a "Jarrod" (mixed with a bit of Napoleon) in my school. Its funny that theres movies about these kind of people. i'm picturing every school with one of these characters?
Watched this last night, really liked it. I didn't think I was going to enjoy it because, like you, I didn't care for Jarrod but I guess that was intentional.
I can understand why people might make Napoleon Dynamite comparisons but I think they're two very different films.
I really felt for Lily. Jarrod's family made me laugh, especially his daughter & the fight scene was hilarious.

Got an email from amazon today, No Country For Old Men will be on DVD Mar 11th:

I've also got Into The Wild & American Gangster on pre-order. Still not sure about The Darjeeling Limited, I've read as many bad reviews as good. Even the good reviews seem to agree that it's not close to Wes Anderson's best.
Anybody seen Gone Baby Gone?

The remake of 3:10 to Yuma - It's an average film; too may contrivances.

You may like 3:10 to Yuma. The performances are good and it's almost a good movie. It looks great and the villains are appropriately evil. I had issues with Russell Crowe's character and his motives throughout much of the film. I'm going to watch the original 1957 film this week.

bearass

i just watched rescue dawn last week, all three of the actors did an awesome job, they all lost some ridiculous amount of weight before filming, good movie though

QuoteSaw No Country For Old Men yesterday afternoon.  After all the hype I was slightly disappointed.

Gotta agree here. I think most people see more into this than there actually is.
It's just a straight-up version of the novel, with some of the best passages deleted. And I wasn't that big a fan of the novel to begin with.

The acting is great, but there just isn't room enough to really care for the characters, and the "moral" of the story just falls flat in the end.

This strenghtens my new theory about movies vs. television...

MMJ_fanatic

I re-watched The Number 23 last night and have to say I really do like this one.  The way the movie was structured maintained just enough tension and the final epiphany really brought great closure--this Jim Carrey was as good as his performance in Eternal Sunshine.
Sittin' here with me and mine.  All wrapped up in a bottle of wine.

Pan's Labyrinth.  It's been sitting in my to-watch pile for months.  What an excellent film.

Next in the pile is my newly-arrived Shane Meadows box set.  I am desperate to see This is England, but willing to be swayed by instructions as to what order to watch:

Twenty-four Seven
A Room For Romeo Brass
Dead Man's Shoes
This is England

I'm thinking Chronological...
The trouble with the straight and the narrow is it's so thin, I keep sliding off to the side

mjkoehler

I've only seen the last 2 and both are brilliant. Not sure a particular order is needed. DB?

dragonboy

I would watch them chronologically only because 24/7 is the weakest of the 4. It's a not a bad little film but the other 3 are far better. You'll probably enjoy it more if it's the first one you watch, not having to compare it to the movies that followed.

Can't wait to hear your thoughts Mark!
