QuoteIt's really killing me not being able to have movie popcorn... I really wanna see Hellboy II, but can't imagine any movie without buttery popcorn. Mmm.

Why can't you have movie popcorn?

QuoteSome recently viewed:
American Gangster - very good
Apocalypse Now - excellent! don't know why it took me that long to watch it. i have the Complete Dossier edition and went with the original version.
Heat - very good
Pi - very good. Requiem is good too but i refuse to watch that again, made me feel sick.
The Ice Storm - good. its weird hearing asian music in an american film (i realize who the director is, its still weird), it worked though.

I splurged last night and bought a bunch of DVD's. Feel free to let me know what you think of these movies and witch i should watch first.
Breathless
Down By Law
Kicking And Screaming (not the one with Will Ferrell)
The Squid And The Whale
Everything Is Illuminated
The Good The Bad And The Ugly
Once Upon A Time In America
The Constant Gardener
City Of God
City Of Men
Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels
The Gift
Crumb
So you finally got around to seeing Heat, eh?

Agreed Apocalypse Now is excellent (it appears you went the right way and not got the redux), but to me Id say Heat and American Gangster were 5-star excellent as well. Not saying their all-time classics, esp since I consider AN the best movie war movie ever made, but I think theyre both fantastic movies.

I liked The Ice Storm too. Saw it was on a ON Demand list on my tv like a year ago and decided to watch it. Def feels like an Ang Lee movie but it was surprisingly good. Ang Lee movie that it seems like no one has seen and is very good - Ride With The Devil

I thought Once Upon.. was good, but a little long for me and Im someone who enjoys a 3 hr movie as long as its well made. Theres plenty in Bobby D's and even James Woods catalogues that I prefer

Lock, Stock is very good (I like Snatch a bit more), and I remember Gift and its infamous Kaite Holmes titty scene to be good.

'Children' of Men was OK. I heard good things about it, and maybe because of it I was underwhelmed, but I just thought it was a solid 'good'

However, I gotta agree with K and I think hands down the best on that list is City of God. Its definitely my favorite foreign film ever (last years 'The Lives of Others' might be the best Ive seen since then) , but its probably one of my 20 favorite movies regardless. It left me speechless by the end of it, its simply amazing. Perfection in movie making IMO

QuoteJust saw THE DEPARTED  A million times better than Goodfellas, or even Taxi Driver.

I like The Departed but NO WAY is it better than those two.

Absolutely agree, although I really liked The Departed.

Incidently, have any of you Departed fans seen the original and better 2002 Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs? That film is actually part of a trilogy and Marty is thinking of re-doing the other two films as well.

Now obviously everyone has their own opinion on what movie they like better or feel is better, but I feel like when newer movies are compared to older movies, typically classics, the newer movie's greatness seems to me to be neglected or discounted to a degree.

To me, Departed is better than Taxi Driver. Its got fantastic acting by everyone - Dicaprio, Damon, Nicholson, Winstone, Wahlberg, etc - and a story/plot that is excellent regardless. TD, without RDN tour de force performance, I think is just another good movie.

Id probably say I like Goodfellas more than Departed, but you know, I think it goes back to what I started off saying in that its just natural and hard to rate these great movies you just see ahead of some of your favorites ever.

Maybe neither of you like The Departed as much as I did, but everything about it - story, acting/cast, cinematography, dialogue, even the soundtrack - I thought was great and I really think it deserves, and probably will with time, be considered as good as these movies and other classics

Oh man, that's so perfect.  That movie is going to be something really special.

I think I'll watch Bottle Rocket tonight.  Or maybe Rushmore.    :D

I've got myself on a pretty hardcore diet and exercise, so I've been really strict on what I eat... it's working really well, I've lost three pounds every week for the past six weeks, and nearly thirty pounds total.

:)

Very well said.

This reminds me of a conversation I had with someone not to long ago about the old Disney movies in my childhood versus the new Pixar films today. I hate to admit it, but Finding Nemo kicks the ass of every cartoon movie I ever had. I hated to admit it because, at least to me, these old movies were the untouchable classics for a long time (and some of them still are), but I can't deny the superiority of Finding Nemo, Ratatouille, Toy Story, etc.

In other news, I cannot wait to see Hellboy II and the Dark Knight. I just have to figure out which one to see first... (probably gonna go with Batman)

A bowl of popcorn with just a sprinkle of salt cooked in olive oil is about 1 point according to Weight-Watchers.

Yeah, but at the theater they sort of smother that stuff in butter and oil and all of the good stuff. It's a good thing.

I saw the film at an indie theatre in Toronto early this summer. I really liked it although some things didn't sit well with me: strange celebrity choices for interviews (and some puzzling omissions); some distracting arty direction representing Strummer who wasn't arty etc...

Still, a very good documentary and well worth owning.

Totally made me want to go to a football match. I haven't been in a good rumble in ages.

brad and i saw the dark night yesterday, and it was pretty amazing.
all facts begin as dreams dreamt by the wizard

The DARK

Hellboy 2- Very, very good. Del Toro knows how to work his magic.

Step Brothers- Funnier than expected. Even so, the most laughs in the theatre came during the preview of Pineapple Express, which looks absoulutely hilarious.
In another time, in another place, in another face

Jellyfish

Planet Terror, what an awesome f/n movie.
The fact that my hearts beating
is all the proof you need

The DARK

Dark Knight- Extremely good. By far the best, deepest movie of the year so far. Hollywood action meets character study meets Shakespeare.

Also, this film goes to show how shallow movie critics can be. While half of critics praise it for the bleak masterpiece that it is, others downgrade it because it's "muddled" and "confusing". Pardon me sirs, but isn't this what you're paid for? You get to watch multiple screenings of the movie and get into the deeper meaning which sets this movie above everything else out there, and you can't even figure out the relatively simple plot. Also the length seems to be a problem to them. No one dared to pan Lord of the Rings, even though it was 3 and a half hours long. I mean, really? Can you people get over the fact that this is more than a slam-bang comic book movie that's over in an hour? In a way, you get more bang for your buck, as this film keeps you on the edge of your seat for its entire length.

Who Killed the Electric Car?

Extremely captivating and excellent, but oh so enraging.
