What Movie Did You Just See?

i've heard wolf creek is a good movie (if you like that kind of thing, which i don't - there is NO WAY i would see it). the weird thing for me is the actor playing the killer (john jarrat) used to be the "home handyman" on a home improvement show here - generally a nice, decent bloke, so it would be weird to see him chopping people into pieces!

the most disturbing thing is its (kind of) based in fact - a guy in the early 90s murdered 7 backpackers in a forest near Sydney...
love a song for the way it makes you feel

it wasn't that for me.  vigo drove me crazy.  i thought the dialogue was terrible and there has been huge debate as to whether or not that was intentional or not.  and i don't even care, because either way, it drove me crazy.  it felt pushed and false.

i thought mr.  hutt was great.  that's about it.   :-/

I understand your critique. However, you could argue that most if not all of Cronenberg's films have similar dialogue issues. I think on Viggo's part, it was intentional. Plus, the film was based on a graphic novel, which of course (the graphic novel genre) are about quick sound-bite driven scenes.

i hear you, but i felt like mr. cronenberg was veering away from his usual style (ie weird and interesting) and attempting to create a hollywood film.  but it didn't work.  and if he was trying to make a hollywood film, but cronenberg-style, then it didn't work, either.  i feel like the dialogue works a lot better in naked lunch, or the fly.  they weren't trying to be something other than what they were - does that make sense?

oh, and maybe i'm just bitter because i had to cater their toronto film festival party, and it wasn't a very fun night and it was the first time i'd worn a tie and it choked me and the dude who's the younger dude who kills people at the beginning is a friend of mine, and he TOTALLY dissed me when i said hi, even though i knew him from a damn restaurant job.  ;)

(except that i know i just didn't like it.)

Not to mention that Viggo's character in A History Of Violence would kick Aragorn's ass in a fight.
Yeah, he really would!

Amazing.

Better explain to the American majority what the movie is about... and who The Rocket was.

La Gloire De Mon Pere (My Fathers Glory) - beautiful French film about a young boy's life in the early 1900's.
A History Of Violence - good but not great
Pieces Of April - surprisingly enjoyable/touching Katie Holmes movie.

keanu reeves...

why is it that every time A WAlk Above the Clouds is on, I see the same scene over and over again- the one where they are being butterflies and fanning grapes. It's always on t.v. and I have never watched any other part of the movie expect for that, which I`ve maybe seen 5 times.

I`m only saying this now because I saw it again tonight.

I reluctantly watched Keanu Reeves in Something's Gotta Give a few weeks ago. Actually quite enjoyed it  :-[

Saw Days Of Heaven last night, beautiful to look at but not as good as Badlands or Thin Red Line. I still can't wait to see The New World.

I enjoyed North Country up until the end. Did you think that Woody Harrelson was mis-cast?

I watched The Straight Story again last night. Exceptional movie!

How come you didn't like the end?

Okay, that scene where he Dad gets up and talks?  I don't think I've cried that hard in a long time.  I couldn't stop.

I did kind of think Woody was miscast, although, he seemed like a hockey dude.  He just didn't sound convincing with his legalese, I found.

** North Country Spoliers Ahead! ***

I didn't like how it all fell together so conveniently at the end. You could argue that the movie is based on a true story & therefore that's how it really went down but It just didn't sit right for me. One minute the father is so strong/angry/rude/stuborn towards his daughter, the next he's forgotten his pride & is risking everything by standing up in her defence. There hadn't been a single scene to suggest that he would do that for her.
Her male co-workers too.
The rape was played as this huge bombshell but was obvious from the start. & we're supposed to believe that this unfortunate event that took place years ago would suddenly bring everyone together in solidarity?
Still, I watched it on the plane & wasn't expecting to enjoy at all  :)

I've yet to watch Monster. It's been on my to-see list since it came out but I hear it's difficult viewing & haven't found myself in the right mood.

Quoterecently, brokeback mountain.  which has stuck with me.  i thought it was beautiful.  and so very sad.

I thought brokeback was an amazing film, but also the saddest film i've seen in a LONG time....

saw a very funny very clever german film called "one day in europe" on the weekend - the day of the final match of the european champions (soccer) league: four stories, following what happens to four different characters in moscow, istanbul, berlin & santiago de compostela...  highly recommended!!! (for those of you not into sport, the soccer aspect is fairly incidental - it's really just a great group of funny stories!)

Have you seen 1,000 Corpses? I read it was crap but am still intrigued. I met Rob Zombie once, he seemed cool.

yeah. 1000 corpses is not as good but still a lot of fun.
rob zombie always seems cool.

House of 1000 corpses gave me nightmares for a couple nights.  Granted, I did watch it when I was like 14 or so, but DAMNNNN there is some sick shit in there.  Rob Zombie is fucked up in the head for sure.

But he still seems very cool :)
