QuoteSome excellent reviews coming in for Where The Wild Things Are...

I have heard this too. I cried the other night during a commercial for it.  :P

I can't wait. Spike Jonze said in an interview "don't fool yourself into thinking it's a kid's movie. It's a movie about a kid, there is a difference"

Supposedly the studio test screened it to children who overwhelmingly had to leave in fits of tears and fear. They demanded changes, and Jonze was only willing to go so far because he didn't want it to appeal only to a young audience.

Afterschool - it's insane and awesome, the way that kid edits the memorial video is so classic.  Really loved this movie, you should check it out.

Where The Wild Things Are - it wasn't what I expected and it's more interesting and thought-provoking than entertaining. I didn't love any of the characters, but I think that was the point. It certainly is a multi-layered film, one that demands re-watching.

Just realized the new Coen Brothers film A Serious Man already came out in limited release a couple weeks ago. Is there a Pittsburgh release date yet or did it already come out and I missed it? Even after all the success they've had, it seems like the Coens still don't get the respect they deserve. When No Country came out, the two closest theaters from me didn't even get the movie in until it got a lot of Oscar buzz a few weeks later. i had to go about 45 minutes out of my way to see it on its release.
Going to see Where The Wild Things Are tomorrow, I have a good feeling that I'll like it and that it will be misunderstood by many.
That's motherfuckin' John Oates!

Where The Wild Things Are. It was a magical, heartbreakingly beautiful adventure. The music was brilliant as well. Loved it.

I actually just heard about this movie yesterday.

I also heard that it will never have a wide release in theaters, and will only be a limited release movie.

For directors whose 2nd to last movie won best picture of the year, kind of odd  :-?

Exactly my point. I guess it doesn't have enough star actors or robot aliens in it.

I'm really mad at myself for missing this. I'm thinking Loew's at The Waterfront probably had it, but I didn't know about it because there was no advertising for this movie. I can't figure out a way to look up past show times for theaters. Loew's was the only theater around here that had No Country on opening weekend and the only one to get Paranormal Activity.

It only got released October 2nd, and I dont know it that was just the first places (like LA, NYC, etc). I think its a safe bet it didnt sniff any theater around Pittsburgh. NCFOMen's initial release was a lot wider than this movie from what Ive gathered.

I wouldnt get too worked up about it, theres always the DVD.

EDIT: It was only in 6 theaters in its first week of release. Only 82 theaters in its 3rd week. Maybe itll keep going up though

Wanted

It was okay for a popcorn flick and pretty much what I expected, action scenes were cool, but damn - could they rip off The Matrix any more?!

People in "The Fraternity" could increase their heart rate to >400 BPM, thus being able to move faster than normal, i.e. dodge bullets and shoot like 6 people/second. But also, they had some other sort of rip off deal where they were in these baths with wax on them where they were in some sort of other place?! Dont even ask, they didnt explain it at all, I just thought it was exactly like getting plugged in and going into the "matrix"

There are worse blockbusters, but youre not missing much here. The Matrix rip-offs kind of hurt it for me.

5.1/10

Paranormal Activity.

It was ok. Some creepy moments, but not nearly as scary as some of the reviews I've read suggest.

Underworld - borrowed my sister's DVD...not bad but not great either. Read that the 2nd one is better?

I thought both were pretty good, fairly similar, but I think I did like the 2nd one better.

Dont think I ever saw the 3rd one

Did anyone else read that Arnie and Bruce Willis have been filming with Sly for The Expendables?!

I'm gearing up for Halloween, so I revisited Prom Night (1980):

One of the early slasher films, and it still holds up pretty well. I have't watched it since it came out on video, sometime in the early '80s, but even though it's dated, you can tell Jamie Lee Curtis was a star on the rise (she did Halloween two years earlier and the Fog also came out in 1980). Leslie Nielsen doesn't have much to do, but he's still solid as ever (he wasn't a comic actor back in those days). It's still one of the better teen exploitation flicks and one in a series of fairly successful and influential low-budget Canadian slasher movies from the '70s and early '80s: Black Christmas, Deathdream, Terror Train, My Bloody Valentine, Happy Birthday to me, Visiting Hours.

I thought Ahnold couldnt be in movies because he holds a political position?

Or maybe I just assumed that since he hasnt done any since being in office

The DARK

Just saw Where the Wild Things Are. Don't go in expecting anything like the tone of the book; Spike is concentrating a much more comprehensive take on adulthood through the eyes of a child. It's probably not nearly as "epic" as you'd expect out of such a hyped film, though that's not always a bad thing. Nor is there nearly enough wild rumpus, though a lot of it wouldn't fit with the menancholy tone throughout.

Those are about the only bad things I can say about it, though. Max is incredibly well-written and well-performed (and a lot like me at that age). The family scenes are also great and emotionally dead-on.

let us not forget the look of the wild things... beautifully created.  It reminds me almost of the labyrinth, the way they throw themselves around all over the place- jumping on each other and sleeping in big "real piles"

the movie has absolutely grown on me and i think i may bump my score up to a 9 outa 10
