There Will Be Blood

For once, Im not really sure what to say. I thought it was very good and interesting, great acting, but not sure what else to say. DDLewis was excellent as usual, but I thought Dano stole his scenes and he definitely impressed me. At first, I didnt like the ending, now Im not sure if I liked it or not. I dont think I'll ever watch it again, but I did really enjoy it.

4.1/5

Im scratching my head as to why Daniel Day Lewis didnt get an Oscar for his role as Bill the Butcher in Gangs of New York in 2002, but did win for TWBB. I'll still stand by what I thought before I saw this: Viggo Mortensen shouldve won best actor in 07 for Eastern Promises.

I wouldve given Cage (Adaptation.), Nicholson (About Schmidt), or DDL the best actor in 2002 over actual winner Adrien Brody (The Pianist)....and I like Brody

What about Michael Caine in The Quiet American? In my opinion, that was the second best performance out of those five nominees, next to DDL obviously. But really, I would have voted for any of them over Brody.

Doesn't come out til tomorrow here. Too much to see at once with FMF, Ninja Assassin, and The Road all coming out. I want to see The Road the most but it's only playing at one theater thats a little out of the way.
That's motherfuckin' John Oates!

There Will Be Blood is not an easy movie to watch, although it is beautifully shot (notice that there are few close-ups a la David Lean). It's not a black or white film either since DDL's character isn't evil and the other characters aren't necessarily good nor are their motives obvious.

It's a grey film.

I have to say that There Will Be Blood resonates: after I saw it in the theatre I gave it a mild thumbs up but two weeks later, I changed my opinion where I now think it is one of the greatest modern westerns ever.

Lewis ruled in Gangs of New York. It's a flawed movie though.

Did not know The Road was even coming out already. This year has flown by. Loews is only like 20 minutes from me. Im def going to try to get down there before the end of the week.

8.5/10 on IMDB right now  :o

So you'd consider it a western? Because of the era and its based in the west?

What are the flaws with GONY?

Loews is what I was referring to. It's a little farther for me, about 40 minutes maybe longer.

Leo is miscast, some of the support characters are poorly written. Brendan Gleeson was great though.

Absolutely There Will Be Blood is a modern/revisionist western as is No Country For Old Men, The Proposition, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada and Bad Day at Black Rock (a fantastic 1955 John Sturges film starring Spencer Tracy, Robert Ryan, Lee Marvin and Walter Brennan). There's lots of great modern/revisionist westerns.

While Leo wasnt as good as he has been this decade in almost every other film he's done IMO - which in context is more a compliment to his other roles - I dont know if Id say he was miscast. I thought he was good, and his anger and desire of revenge felt true. DDL with an overpowering performance didnt help him out either. Who wouldve been a better choice?? I cant see many other name actors doing better in that role.

Althought at the time of release it seemed more appropriate, if anyone was miscast it was John C Reilly. For me, I cant believe him anymore in a totally serious role. He doesnt need to be a goofball for me to believe him, I thought he pulled off his roles in Hard Eight, Criminal, Magnolia, etc., but everytime I saw him in GONY it was hard to not laugh.

I agree somewhat on support cast being poorly written, namely his best friend when he arrives back (Henry Thomas) and Cameron Diaz. After watching it again not too long ago, I didnt find Diaz to stick out as a weakness as much as I had remembered though.

Gleeson is pretty much great in everything.

Yes and no. Yes - it came out before all his starring role comedies, which is why I said it seemed more appropriate at the time of release than now.

On the other hand - he usually played a sort of a less educated, easygoing guy that looked to others for guidance from others in a lot of roles before GONY - The Perfect Storm, Magnolia, The River Wild, The Good Girl, State of Grace, Boogie Nights, Hard Eight, Casualties of War.

I think its a safe bet Scorsese wouldnt cast him for that role now, but yeah, JCR wasnt really a name actor then to most and wasnt stereotyped like I think he is now when GONY came out. However, even based on previous roles, I think he seemed out of place as a selfish, crooked cop who wielded his power on everyone but the Butcher.

Working my way through the "to watch" pile by the telly while the wife was out and about:

Black Sheep - NZ-based comedy horror about genetically mutated sheep.  It was OK.

The Wrestler - only just got round to watching this, as the missus was not at all keen.  I thought it was great.

Dark Knight - Mrs W deigned to watch this one with me.  An absolutely cracking movie - Heath Ledger is demented.
The trouble with the straight and the narrow is it's so thin, I keep sliding off to the side

Daniel Craig's "Casino Royale"  I actually watched "Quantum of Solace" 1st but found both great.  He has now tied Connery as my favorite Bond--both vicious and troubled.  Very effective.
Sittin' here with me and mine.  All wrapped up in a bottle of wine.

Casino Royale is up there with my favorite Bond flicks. Didnt like QoS as much, but I didnt understand why it got sort of slammed by critics. I thought it was better than any of the Brosnan movies besides Goldeneye - which partially thanks to the video game will always remain my favorite Bond movie.

The Amateurs

Never heard of this, but decided to give it a shot because of the cast and story. Its about a guy (Jeff Bridges) in a small town who decides he wants to make a porno, and gets his friends and other townspeople to help him fund and make it. Trying to find the "actors" was pretty damn funny. Acting and cast was great - Joe Pantoliano, Ted Danson, Time Blake Nelson, Glenne Headly, William Fichtner, Lauren Graham, and Patrick Fugit. Fichtner and Pantoliano were especially good.  I really like Bridges in general, and in Arlington Road, Iron Man, and The Door In The Floor, but this was my favorite role of his since Lebowski. I saw it on Showtime and theyve been airing it a lot, definitely recommend checking it out if youre in the mood for a good standard comedy.

When isn't Fichtner good? He ruled in the underrated and never-should-have-been-cancelled Invasion series and I liked his tortured character in the over-the-top show, Prison Break.

Havent seen either of those shows, but agreed, he's always good.
