Finally got around to watching a couple of DVDs this week:

Inglorious Basterds - excellent Tarantino-esque fun.

Can something be Tarantino-esque when its made by Tarantino in the first place??  ;)

I don't know when but a while back, I was chatting with Penny and she told me how many music films she watched.  I hadn't watched too many in awhile and it motivated me to get back to watching some.  I figured I'd scour the Netflix streaming library for some gems and I've gotten around to seeing these four this week.

It Might Get Loud - seen it before but man do I love this one no matter how uncomfortable it is watching how outclassed the Edge is.

The Making of A Night at the Opera - I had no idea how much time they spent in the studio to make this classic.

An Ox's Tale - What a surprise to find this one after talking about Entwistle so recently in regards to Quadrophenia.  I had no idea there was a doc about him.  Loved it!

Beyond the Lighted Stage - watched it for the 6th time tonight.  Man I'm a loser

I dunno, your last sentence deems you to be a man of discerning (and superior musical) taste in my humble opinion.

C'mon man you're too hard on yourself...it's a masterpiece. It turned my fiancee onto Rush and it also makes me see the band as probably the most likeable (mega) rock n roll stars!

I might have to watch this one just for that reason  ;D

I wouldn't say he's outclassed. He's just a far different type of guitarist; certainly innovative, but from a different era with a decidedly modern approach. However, he shouldn't have been cast in the doc (but he probably was cast because he's so very different than Page and Page Jr.).

I remember watching an old Canadian TV special with jazz great Lenny Breau, Chet Atkins and classical guitar star Liona Boyd. The three started to jam, but Liona had to sit it out since she can't jam. I don't think it's that much different than the Edge with White and Page.  Edge isn't a jammer and all he knows is U2 and tech stuff. He doesn't know how to devolve.

The King's Speech

Very, very good.  Geoffrey Rush always inspires, and Colin Firth was a natural for the role.
I will never, ever laugh or giggle at a at a stammer or a lisp again.  >:(
I was riddled with guilt the whole time...

I might have to watch Social Network tonight and see what all the fuss is about. I have a feeling I'll think its good, very good perhaps, but not great and deserving of Best Picture.

I haven't seen many (any) great movies in awhile...this movie was good and well-done, but I don't think it was anything special.  Entertaining, moved along surprisingly fast...in the end, it was worthwhile mostly because Facebook is so huge.  Just to see its humble beginnings and to learn about the lawsuits was...mostly worth it.  For something to be "special" to me, it was to be very, very re-watchable...and I wouldn't watch this again, except maybe with a friend who really wanted to see it.
We could.

The Fighter - great film with amazing and heartfelt performances. Christian Bale is astonishing.

Sticky Icky Green Stuff

Restrepo - 6.7/10 - I guess national geographic spent a year with these dudes in Afghanistan, followed them in combat.  insightful to the combat style.  It makes you wonder why we're they're.  The people we're fighting on just above the level of goat herder and it's in the fuckin mountains.  literally, straight fucked mountains.  multiple peaks.  plus the tunnels in the mountains.  not really any combat footage or anything or than them shooting at shit far away.  what a stupid fucking war.  can't blame the soldiers for taking orders, but they need to get the fuck out of there.   wank.

Saw Blue Valentine yesterday.

That shit was real.

I cried at all the happy parts.   :-\  I thought it was just me having a weird reaction based on some stuff going on in my life, but I talked to a friend last night and he had the same exact reaction too.

And as a lifelong fan of boxing, I thought the fight scenes were fairly well done; on par with the surprisingly authentic boxing scenes in Rocky Balboa.

I'm waiting for an Arturo Gatti bio-pic. The source material alone makes for a great but tragic story.
