I saw 50/50 and enjoyed it.   A comedy about cancer is a tough sell but I thought it was well-acted and had some good writing.   Exceeded (low) expectations.

I've had high expectations ever since it premiered at last September's Toronto Film Fest. The reviews across the board have been positive. However, I have a hard time stomaching anything with Seth Rogen in it. He's soooo fucking full of himself and is way over-exposed in a Jack Black kind of way, but at least Black comes off as nice in interviews etc... Rogen is a smug prick. I'm starting to hate he's Canadian. Hopefully he'll go Jim Carey on us hosers and never come back.
That's exactly what I thought of the movie Jaimoe. ;);D
I actually got choked up in the theater (no no, not like when I saw White Fang ), and vowed to myself to spend more weekends with my parents.  I have spent more time with them and I attribute some of that to 50/50.

I should've prefaced that I haven't seen 50/50 yet, but its been on my radar since TIFF. I'm ok with the theme of the film; my dad died of cancer and its a true story (and honest).

I'm sure this has been discussed somewhere in this 280 page thread but I just watched "Exit Through the Gift Shop" and now I'm just confused. Is "Mr. Brainwash" just a troll by Bansky? I can't even figure out if the movie is "real."

HELP  ;D

Tired Eyes

I watched Razorback via an Australian DVD on Saturday night.  It's a 1984 film (first feature directed by Russell Mulcahy who later did the first Highlander among other flicks) about a giant (900-pound) razorback (wild boar) that goes around terrorizing folks in the Outback.  The lead is Gregory Harrison (Trapper John, M.D.) who does a solid job in the role.  One interesting bit of background is that Harrison grew up on Catalina Island, which has razorbacks in the wild.  Another cast member of note is Arkie Whiteley, who also appeard in the classic Road Warrior.

A Separation - a complex, brilliant, exceptional film!

Devastating story.
That's motherfuckin' John Oates!

Take Shelter - Mark this down for best of 2011 category for me. Michael Shannon is currently the best at being crazy right now, hopefully he doesn't start to get typecast in that role.

Clean, Shaven - Effective, well-made film about a schizophrenic. Hard to watch at times with a couple cringe-worthy scenes. Great use of sound in this.

Hoop Dreams - I don't even like basketball that much but I knew this would be good and it was.

Conan O'Brien Can't Stop - A must see for any Conan fans out there.

Really want to see this one. Have you seen Shotgun Stories? Michael Shannon & the same director I think. It's a good little film, kind of like an extended DBT video. Did you know he's playing general Zod in the new Superman movie?

I haven't seen that, but they mention the previous collaboration in the special features so I plan to check that one out too. I've never been a fan of Superman. Michael Shannon is great in Boardwalk Empire too, probably my favorite character because you never know what he's gonna do next (haven't seen season 2 yet).

I never cared for the comic but Superman I & II are classic movies...but maybe I think that because I was a kid when they came out.

really loved that movie.  solid take on american paranoia.

The Yakuza - Robert Mitchum & Ken Takakura (Black Rain) star in this overlooked, flawed yet near-classic from the 70's that, in my opinion, should at least be mentioned alongside the likes of Dirty Harry, The French Connection, Marathon Man, Chinatown, Serpico, The Conversation etc

Oh yeah. Great movie that I remember. It's been ages since I've seen it.

Devil Ledbetter

I finally saw Super 8. I know it came out a while ago, but man, was that ever great.

The plot was similar to ET and The Iron Giant but the whole thing was very well done.
We understand it's the '90s.

Hawkeye

Food, Inc - Despite knowing a lot of the content of the movie going in (from reading Michael Pollan's books), it still had an effect on me.  I always wanted to see Joel Salatin's farm after reading about it in Omnivore's Dilemma, and it was even simpler than I had imagined.  Will need to make a trip there some day.

X-Men:  First Class - Pretty good, if you like X-Men at all.  I could see at least 2-3 more X-Men movies after this one...
We could.

Impressed by Hammer's return to horror films, The Woman in Black. Great cast, with Daniel Radcliffe holding his own with the great character actor CiarĂ¡n Hinds. Old school Hammer-styled brooding doom and gloom production throughout. One BIG detractor was choosing to go yesterday on Family Day (province of Ontario stat holiday). I can see why children grow up to be just like their brainless chatter-addicted idiot parents.

weeniebeenie

I really want to see The Woman In Black. The trailer looks so good. I don't think it's showing in Australia yet though.
How loud can silence get?
