Ah I meant that the low budget hurt the horror for myself rather than the movie as I just seen it for the first time in 2013, but it's an awesome movie. I was really getting into it until I seen the moon broadcasted onto a projector screen in the woods and the foam/plastic doll popping out of the basement trap door when he's trying to shove the girl back in.

I haven't seen the other two yet, but I'm really hoping to go see the new one this weekend.

Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness are must-buys. II is one of the greatest fucked up horror/comedies of all time and Army of Darkness is a terrific and very funny Ray Harryhausen Sinbad-inspired swashbuckler/horror film. Goddamit they rule!!!!

I remember discovering Evil Dead II on video tape in the late 1980's. I turned several people on to it and really remember how it quickly became a "cult classic". My younger brother is very into the series. He has all the different versions that have come out on DVD over the years and has a framed movie poster of Army of Darkness in his media room.

He reminds me of me. I have a framed Evil Dead II theatrical one-sheet, autographed Bruce Campbell Bubba Ho-Tep theatrical one-sheet and a couple of autographed BC books. I got into a mini argument with Bruce over the official Beta home video release date of Evil Dead. I said '82 and he said '83. He was right. Go figure

Red Lights - pretty great acting from the scarcrow in this one.  it was awesome until the last 3 or 4minutes then it just totally went off the deep end.  a shame it had potential.  still probably worth watching for fun.  nice, small cast.

Liked this one a lot. Surprised it wasnt a theatrical release. I actually liked the ending, didnt see that coming.

Seven Psychopaths - It was kind of like a mix of a Charlie Kauffman and a Tarantino script, but not in a good way. The writer kind of wrote himself into it as the leader character, where he's writing the script for the movie in the movie alla Adaptation. It was decent I guess, definitely not as good as Martin McDonagh's other movie In Bruges. It was cool seeing Tom Waits as usual.

Headhunters - Awesome Swedish thriller about an art thief who gets caught in a deadly game of cat and mouse. Highly recommend it, especially if your into other Swedish movies.

Man, I loved Seven Psychopaths. Entertaining script, awesome dialogue, and I thought Rockwell-Farrell-Walken were great together. Thought Walken's re-imagining of the Vietnamese guy's storyline was a great ending. Definitely in my Top 10 from last year. I really liked In Bruges as well, didnt realize it was the same director.

Ive heard a lot of good things about Headhunters. Its in the queue.

Just saw Sinister, and it was disappointing.  I'm a big horror movie fan and was looking forward to it as it seemed the reviews were not as terrible as they are for most horror movies.

It has some very disturbing images and some good scares, but it's not a very good movie and the story is way too implausible to really hold it together.

I dug Sinister, thought its one of the better pure horror movies of the last few years - which is as much a testament of the state of american horror movies as it is Sinister. Had a throwback feel to it and was seriously spooky. Ethan Hawke was good, great score/soundtrack that added to the creepiness. It sort of unraveled towards the end but still worth the watch overall I thought.

Just watched Lars and the Real Girl. Not a bad movie, but I wish there was a little more to it towards the end.

Nice, quirky little movie. I liked how the community accepted and embraced the whole thing. I dont think there's a role Gosling cant pull off. Drive was my favorite film from 2011. Saw Blue Valentine recently and thought it was really well done all around, Gosling and Michelle Williams were great. Surprisingly it actually made me feel sympathetic for Gosling's character who is sort of an anti-hero, similar to how Blow left me feeling about Johnny Depp's George Jung. Really stoked for The Place Beyond the Pines which comes out soon, directed by the same guy as Blue Valentine.

Does anybody watch movies??

I seen The Man From Earth which was pretty cool. The trailer looks like crap and I never would've given it a chance had it not been recommended.

Looking forward to Evil Dead though  The original is great and the remake should be even better

I watch a ton of movies, probably 5-6 a week, yet for some reason havent checked this thread out in almost a year

When I clicked the thing to take me to last unread post, it was only 4 pages back and that was last April  , and the same page I reviewed Cabin in the Woods. Coincidentally, I came back because I saw Evil Dead thursday. Review to come shortly.

Oh, and The Man From Earth is awesome. Like you, I never wouldve checked it out had a lot of people not raved about it. So unique. Has a TV movie feel because of how cheaply made it is, but the script is so well written - and really thats all this movie needs - its easy to forget about everything else. Im a sucker for well scripted movies that take place basically in 1 or very few locations/scene sets. I found myself believing the guys story even. For those not familiar with it, its about a man who is about to relocate and says his goodbyes to a group of friends while also telling them he is a many centuries old caveman that doesnt age, and it revolves around them questioning him and him trying to convince them its true.

Evil Dead (2013)

Thought it was very good, but missing something. I think the trailer got my expectations for it to be even more violent, but there is plenty of that and not short on the gore. Quite a few memorable scenes in that regard as well. Seems like those who have seen it expected it to be scarier, but these types of horror movies I watch more for fun than the scares, and I had plenty of fun with it. Psychological horror is what freaks me out and where I go for the scares. It definitely avoided the cheesiness of the original, and I thought the story line was surprisingly well done and developed more than I expected. While it mostly follows the original, there are numerous parts that give a nod towards ED2 as well. Many of the references to ED1 are switched up in a different manner that makes it entirely new yet you see the connection, and in some cases things are totally different. Really its more of a relaunch of ED1 than a remake. I dug the sort of twist near the end with the girl. Makeup was fantastic.

Really, the only things it was missing was the acting/cast choices to a degree and some of the dialogue. Lou Taylor Pucci is the only one I even recognized (why did they make him look like a Rolling Stone journalist in 1974 though???). He was pretty good in the dickhead role, the lead girl was good, but the rest were pretty weak. I guess where it was most lacking was with the lead guy when it comes down to it. Not like I expected him to outshine Ash, but you'd think with a cult classic like this, they couldve got a decent if not recognizable young actor for that part (Heck, Cabin in the Woods got Thor). They kept the humor aspect with this one (Why dont you come down here so I can....., pretty boy  ), but couldve used a little more of it I thought, or at least made some of the non-story line dialogue more interesting. All in all, these are minor complaints. Overall, really enjoyed it. Id say I liked Cabin in the Woods a little more, but this has to be one of the best horror movies in the last 3-5 years.

4.2/5

I thought Seven Psychopaths was a decent flick without much substance.  Really enjoyed the first part of the movie, but not really sold on the whole plot and the ending really didn't do it for me.  I was thoroughly entertained though watching it, as I am with most Walken movies.

I have yet to see Blue Valentine, but I do hear good things. I have The Ides of March that I need to watch. It looks boring, but I also hear good things so I hope that it doesn't let me down. I just re-watched Drive the other day and was looking forward to another one until I read that it was in the works and then it recently got canceled

I'm looking forward to The Place Beyond The Pines. I probably won't get to see it in theaters so I'll have to end up watching whenever it is released onto DVD. I do plan on seeing Evil Dead later this week and I hope it does live up to all of the good reviews. Back on track to Mr. Gosling movies, this trailer came out the other day and has a Drive look to it so I'll just leave that right here.....

I mean, I love movies with substance, underlying messages, epiphanies, etc but I didnt expect Seven Psychopaths to be one of those movies. I think its a stretch to really knock it for that. Basically its a comedy, with a little action and some drama. I was also thoroughly entertained, thought it was hilarious, and the script was unique/interesting and had more to it than I wouldve expected. For me, it really delivered in those areas and thats all I could ask of it in this instance.

Blue Valentine was really well made, and the acting was top notch from Gosling and Williams, but Im not sure how much I really liked it. Certainly have no interest in seeing it again, it was sort of depressing to watch, but it was well done, thought provoking, and I think worth a viewing. Havent seen Ides of March yet, seemed to get a lot of mixed reviews. Didnt know there was supposed to be a Drive sequel. Im not sure a sequel wouldve really worked, but who knows. Im cool with no sequel. Never heard of Only God Forgives. Definitely reminiscent of Drive, same director obviously, but it also looks like it going for other similarities - highly stylized/shot, infrequent but graphic violence, reliant on score/soundtrack in hand with possibly minimal dialogue once again. Looks interesting!

As long as you arent expecting the Evil Dead original but with better effects, Id be surprised if you didnt enjoy this relaunch. Its a lot of fun.

I'm with Manonthemoon on this in that i enjoyed the first half, and thought the ending sucked. A lot of times the end can make or break a film for me. Wasn't bothered by the "without much substance" as i think sometimes style IS the substance.
I don't think I could even do a top ten from last year, a lot of movies disappointed. Django Unchained, Moonrise Kingdom, A Separation, and Headhunters were my favorites that i've seen so far. I have Searching for Sugarman at home from Netflix that I'll watch soon.

BTW - Thought Cabin in the Woods sucked too ;)

Love, love, love, Donnie Darko. I recommend only seeing the original theatrical release. The director's cut fills-in too much of the mind-fuck mystery and is generally just not as fascinating.

and while we're on the subject of fucked up movies, I saw this over the weekend:

yowza. crazy movie. some really cool effects too. The main character had heightened senses so they let the audience hear things the way she heard them. a fucked up movie for sure..if you're into that sort of thing!
