My best friend told me about "Ex Machina" a couple of weeks ago so I rented it on Amazon Prime. Amazing film.

Ex Machina is my movie of the year so far. We'll see if that changes when Spectre and The Force Awakens releases.

The Guest is pretty good. Mad Max and It Follows were disappointing. Great visuals but lame story.

I've had The Guest on my list for a while now and still haven't checked it out but I need to.

I'm afraid to watch It Follows. I've seen a lot of people say how great it is but every time I hear that about a new horror film I never seem to like it too much. Like with The Babadook. I heard a lot of people say how good it was and it was just "meh" to me.

I can't think of many modern horror films that I thought were genuinely great, apart from House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil's Rejects (I know a lot of people would disagree). House of the Devil was okay, the suspense and buildup were fantastic, but the payoff was kind of lacking, imo. These repeat experiences have made me develop a reticence toward any new horror that comes out.

There's a British film that came out not too long ago called Kill List and even though I wouldn't classify it as a horror film I thought it was far more terrifying and well executed than any actual horror film in recent memory.

It Follows isn't scary in the slightest and the story is really dumb. I think the cinematography alone is why it got such good reviews.

Thanks for the recs! Was going to try to watch them on Amazon or Netflix but couldn't find them so I've added both to my list for the next time I'm at the local store as they usually have a pretty good foreign film section.

I'll take your word for it and not bother.  The trailer seemed to indicate the story was gonna be lame.

Watched "We Need to Talk About Kevin" the other night. That definitely ruined archery for me.

weeniebeenie

I watched Whiplash yesterday. I loved it. JK Simmons character reminded me of an angrier (if that's possible) version of Malcolm Tucker from The Thick Of It.

I thought It Follows was definitely good, seems like a love it or hate it movie. I urge people to give it a try and not rely on one person's opinion. it's the kind of movie i wasn't sure what to make of at first but liked it the more I thought about it.

You make a good point. It's always good to watch something for yourself, no matter the film. I was just turned off by the trailer and some of the responses I saw made me feel even less encouraged, though these responses were the minority, but even the praise provoked caution for reasons stated previously. I will watch it if it ends up on Amazon or Netflix as I did have some initial interest but I doubt I'll go out of my way to see it.

I watched The Guest. That was awesome. Worthy of another watch. I'm glad I didn't familiarize myself with the plot too much before going in.  I think that would've taken away from the experience. I liked the backdrop of New Mexico as well as the music selection - really gave the film its own unique character.

Also watched Short Term 12.  My friend told me it would be depressing and it was, but I recommend it.  It had a very natural feel to it which made it easy to empathize with - and sometimes bemoan - the characters.

I haven't seen Snowpiercer yet but heard good things about it. Definitely high up on the to watch list. I saw Stoker a while ago and I liked it very much. The atmosphere was pretty creepy & I thought Mia Wasikowska and Matthew Goode both had superb performances. I'm a huge Park Chan-wook fan so it's no suprise I dug Stoker. Thirst is probably my all time favorite vampire flick

Yeah I know we've talked about a lot of these before, I'm obsessed with South Korean cinema. Memories of Murder and Oldboy are probably my top two, with Chaser up there as well witch I think is underrated compared to some other Korean films. Thirst is awesome but i have to go with Let the Right One In for favorite vampire flick. Has there been any good newer South Korean films I should check out? I feel like it's been awhile since I've seen one, especially with Joon-ho Bong and  Park Chan-wook both having english language debuts.
Changing the subject up to Japanese for a moment, just saw High and Low recently and it's my favorite Kurosawa so far.

Good call on Let the Right One In. Great movie. The remake was decent as well but doesn't stand up to the Swedish original. Other good South Korean films would include Mother, The Host, A Tale of Two Sisters & The Good, the Bad, & the Weird (not awesome but worth viewing)

I've seen all those. I Saw The Devil, the vengeance trilogy, and Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring along with the others previously mentioned I think are all the Korean movies I've seen.

I just watched Let the Right One In (Swedish) for the first time the other day. I'm not really into vampire anything but I really liked that.

Been watching a lot of Scandinavian films in general, actually. Force Majeure - was okay, doubt I'd ever watch it again, despite relating to some of the things the characters were going through. Trollhunter - loved it, didn't expect to. And We Are the Best!, which was my favorite of all I've watched so far.

I added Oldboy to my list a couple of days ago, but didn't know it was part of a trilogy. Can I get away with watching it by itself or is there some order that I need to follow... ?

Will also add Chaser and Memories of Murder to a growing list. Got a lot of work to do.

The "trilogy" is a loose term. They're not connected at all, save for the director. You can absolutely watch them out of irder. Oldboy is far and away the best
