Remember how bad ass this was when it came out?

I've loved everything Chris Cornell from the beginning.  (Except maybe that new solo record.  I'm with you on that one db. ;))

But Bad MF'n! Motor Finger (SATAN OSCILLATE MY METALLIC SONATAS) and Louder Than Love still get the rotation at least once every couple of months.   I can't say that about a lot of my old stuff.   What CD's from the grunge era do you guys still pull out on a regular basis?
I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.

QuoteWondered if it might be them! I was lucky enough to see them live not long before they called it a day with Josh Homme!!!

All I Know (with Josh) http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=jamJIe332R0

Are you are fan of Mark's solo work Capt? Whiskey For The Holy Ghost is one of my fav albums of all time.

Honestly, last summer whenever I was just searching around to make a 90's mix, I stumbled on Screaming Trees. Lanegan impresses me though and at some point Ill try to get his solo stuff

I was only 12 when Dust/All I Know came out, and 8 when Sweet Oblivion/Nearly Lost You was released, so I cant say Ive dug too deep

Its funny bc when I heard it last year, I def remember hearing All I Know back then, but these days I just cant believe they didnt get the exposure/play the other bands did

Screaming Trees were more talented than the rest of them pretty much

I've posted this before, but the best show I ever saw was the Trees in Tallahassee at the Moon after Sweet Oblivion.  Not even a contest.  The Connor brother were both channeling their inner Pete Townshend and Lannegan was just planted font and center for 2 hours of happy pain.

I was cool towards the Gutter Twins release and initially thought the songs would be better if Dulli just sang them - My mind has been changing.

And for the millionth time, if you're Seattle inclined you must start listenting to the Afghan Whigs.  As, the first non-Seattle band signed to Sub Pop they floated in these circles and their catalog surpasses all of the Seattle titans in my opinion.
I'm not saying it's easy...walking into sweet oblivion.

i love SG and chris cornell--the BEST voice of that scene---i had such a crush on him

i don't put stone temple pilots in that category at all (yuck) the most uncreative put together act since the sex pistols.
but come on...there's nothing sexy about poop. Nothing.  -bbill

Strictly speaking bands/albums labeled as "grundge" BMF, Louder Then Love, and Superunknown. I haven't listed to Nevermind in quite some time. Next closest to SG would be Dirt from AIC. Not sure how that is grunge but it always got labled as that. Such a blistering album.

I think I'll throw BMF on right now.

Mmmmm, the sounds of my childhood.... Another great one that was not yet mentioned was The Melvins.  :P

Ahh yes, Dirt still gets the dust knocked off on occasion as well.  Singles soundtrack is also a favorite of the time.  It brings back some crazy memories when I put that one on.

What about L7? ;)

Ahhh yes, the CD walkman.  I used to wrap that thing tight around my waist with that brown medical wrap to try to keep it from skipping when I ran.   God bless the ipod.

Dirt never needs dusted off, it is forever in my rotation... I did not like L7 or Babes in Toyland.... I do still love the Breeders though! :)

For me, the only album from the grunge era that survived was Nirvana Unplugged.

But of course. Pretend that We're Dead and Hunger For Stink are great!

Not sure if I would include Afghan Whigs, Breeders, or Pixies as part of Grunge. I love all 3, they are not "grunge" even though Nirvana stole their basic frame work....at least to me. But that's the vodka talking at this point.

But what is grunge?  Or what was grunge?  Not sure if anyone knows where the term even came from.  Is every band on the Singles soundtrack grunge?  The Trees and Smashing Pumpkins are both on there - I would hardly pigeonhole either in this catagory.

I resented Nirvana and Nevermind because my favorite places were overrun with strange new people almost overnight.  My strange little group of friends suddenly had hundreds of well-washed people dressed like lumberjacks stage diving like Eddie Vedder.

But looking back, that album killed the commercial viability of bad music for at least 5 years and ushered in what I consider the best era of music of my almost 40 year-old life.  And if I listen again it is obvious that that piece of work is an artistic masterpiece.

I'm glad I saw Nirvana before KC did himself in.  My friend and I drove to New Orleans under the guise of seeing the Breeders (they opened), we stayed for Nirvana and they were impressive (Dave Grohl hit his drums like he was trying to kill them).  Lastly, the Afghan Whigs are a soul band specializing in rythmic noise.  They changed "My World is Empty" by the Supremes from a forlurn song about love into a song about dark obsession.  If they're grunge, then count me in.

;D

To answer your question, honestly I have no clue. I hate the sub genrification of music. I really do not care if it's grunge, grindcore, hardcore, punk, power pop, Oi, alternative, retro, dream pop, shoegaze, Britpop, speed metal, doom metal, black metal, alt country, folk, folk core.....as long as it's good it's good.

isn't Neil Young the godfather of grunge? well, he said it best:

It's not allright to say goodbye

Badmotorfinger was a great album and the last one I really like from them.  I saw them open for several bands like Danzig and Voivod  and they would put on a hell of a show, which was what swayed from what I originally thought of them; more cock rock.  I like how they were used in that movie Pacific Heights.  But, I still think the best so-called grunge bands were Mudhoney, and the Melvins.  Tad is cool too.  I remember when Subpop sent me my Touch Me I'm Sick 7'' I had to play it for all of my friends before we could go party. They hated it, yet soon they were all Nirvana fans and  wanted to borrow all of my meat puppets and husker du albums.

The pixies beat them all and are not grunge .  But the greatest pop band to have ever existed. And I say POP like i mean it.

How cool are you?!!  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
God will forgive them. He'll forgive them and allow them into Heaven.....I can't live with that.

I love you too.  This forum keeps getting better and better with all of the Pixies love.  Kurt Cobain once said that the Pixies were the only band that he ever wanted to be in.   Listen to Doolittle and follow it with Nevermind - the sense of pace, melody, and agression...no, the Pixies were not grunge, but they had alot to do with it.  Gigantic, my big, big love.
