Any suggestions on a good starting turntable (decent quality at a decent price?)

What I'd consider a true "starter", what I'm using currently.  Click the picture for more info.

Concur with Yac.  I started on the AT-PL50.  No complaints whatsoever.  You're not going to do any better until you hit the $300-400 range.  Also keep the used/vintage option in mind.  Been eyeballing a Thorens as a 2nd/back-up turntable.  Check ebay for those.
We could.

if you don't mind me asking, what speakers do you use? Is there any you would suggest?

Well, I keep my turntable away from my kids (3 girls - age 3, 7, and 10) for the time being, so its upstairs in the master bedroom, hooked up to my "old" receiver (Technics SA-EX310) and runs to two low-end KLH 900B 3-way speakers.  What I'm using is what I had, so I'm not recommending this setup to you.  Its just what I've cobbled together.  I often use headphones so I can listen to vinyl while everyone is asleep.

I'll back up the previous recommendation. I've had the earlier version (no longer manufactured) of that TT for 7 or 8 years now, and its still kicking.
The wind blew me back, via Chicago, in the middle of the night.

I ended up going for this one and I love it! I do have one question though. As the record spins, the platter that the record sits on moves up and down. This doesn't seem to effect the sound but I just want to reduce unnecessary wear and tear on the turntable. Is this common? If it's a problem, does anyone have any solutions?
