Jesus I can't even process all of this right now.  Val!  So happy you got in!  And being in the front row and scoring a set list...seems like the stars aligned for you guys.  :)

Would have loved to witness the threat to throw down over that set list.  Does she even know who Penny is?  ;D
"There's still time for you to change your mind or whatever else you do."

BH

So was that setlist exactly what was played, except another Moving Away after Smokin From Shootin?  Or was it after Wonderful?
I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.

Oh and guess what else just hit me? It's under 3 months until THE HANGOUT!! This year is about to get gooddddddddddddddd!!!

Indeed, Seth.  :D ;) :)

but come on...there's nothing sexy about poop. Nothing.  -bbill

TSarge

That was not the setlist as actually played - Instead of playing Look at You off the break they replayed Movin' Away again. I think the rest is accurate.

Reggie

Also just before Lullabies,Legends, and Lies.. they played "26 Second Song" off the Shel Silverstein Tribute album.

br00ke

the setlist is exactly as listed except the 2nd take of Movin' Away took the place of Look At You which is too bad b/c i really really would like to hear what he had to say about Look At You

ETA .. ha you guys beat me to it while i was yammering away on the phone.

QUESTION: so i'm thinking we should not share the stories .. i.e. let you guys watch it when it airs / no spoilers ?

So, Jim is looking out at this audience, with two young ladies in front, eyes glazed, drool from mouth's corner, and the slightest hint of bruised forehead.  :D

I hope you two are okay following the noggin knockin'.   ;)

Sure it was an epic moment.  Val, nice score slipping in.

I'd love to see pics, setlist, etc. since I'm out of the Facebook and texting loop.

I'm torn as to how much detail we should hear before the show airs.  Maybe you can write down memorable moments to share once the thing is broadcast to cover stuff that didn't make the final cut.

exactly Johnny--i don't wanna tell too many stories and give anything away. i will say that the Dondante moment was by far the most emotional moment---he really couldn't hold it in when he was talking about his friend, and how he and pat had been friends since 4th grade with this kid...(more to the story but i won't say anything more).....i had heard or read that what that song was about (as have most of you) but to hear it live was something else..

the best parts of everything was just hearing the stories
really wasn't about the music

oh and Ghosts--the new song "moving" or "moving away" was really a testament to jim's voice, to me it was like his master's voice fused with groove (i'm bad at describing songs but lots of HIGH notes) and before the song, jim talked about having a relationship on the road and trying to decide if one person should move to be with the other person (i assume his situation in the recent couple years) or whether you should just leave it as is/and how traumatic moving can be. i really identified with it as i've had distance relationships where the big question was is it worth it, should i move there to be with that person, and i just happen to be moving this weekend---and jim also talked about how traumatic it always is..moving TO or FROM something..but no matter what there is HOPE in something new..

but come on...there's nothing sexy about poop. Nothing.  -bbill

el_chode

Don't lie, you just identified because each time a show ends, so does your 3 hour relationship!

So what was the atmosphere? mellow? Was it like full-out songs or more stripped? OBH was a typical OBH? Did Dondante bring the chills?
I'm surrounded by assholes

br00ke

the atmosphere was surprisingly mellow .. at least alot of tapings i've been to have been very controlled and rigid. we were allowed to stand or sit, whichever we wanted and were told that above all else HAVE A BLAST. um yeah that won't be hard  ;) the songs were pretty rocking / full-out .. OBH was typical .. power slides and all were present .. there was cape'age. the one thing there wasn't was talking from any of the other guys .. all stories and chat were from jim.

TSarge

Carl piped in after Jim described the process of writing Circuital. Jim said they were recording in a big gymnasium and all of a sudden Carl "ripped" the "best solo ever written" and after "closer examination" it "was indeed the best solo ever written". Carl said something but was drowned out by laughter from what Jim said.

The atmosphere was great, despite the fact that it was kind of an anti-concert with all the time between songs. Even the Live on Letterman taping felt much more like a concert. Altogether an amazing experience. Dondante was the highlight for me.

As THE sole songwriter for MMJ, I suppose that makes sense, but too bad.  I've always enjoyed rare opportunities (in person or in interviews) to hear from the other guys about their role in MMJ, as well as their own music.  Still, they would have less direct insight into the genesis of MMJ songs.

Thanks for being our eyes and ears without too much detail.
The fact that my heart's beating is all the proof you need.

Sounds like a great night....Congrats to all who were chosen. Did they mention a potential airing date ? (if already stated sorry did not see)

Br00ke that is an awesome avatar!
Oh, I will dine on honey dew And drink the Milk of Paradiseeeee

e_wind

Did they mention any more details about the upcoming album?
don't rock bottom, just listen just slow down...

TSarge

Not a whole lot about the new album, except I do remember him saying that "So we just got done recording our new album" - so it could be finished or in finial mixing stages.

They did say that it felt very circular to them, as if they were going back to something. They mentioned that before they played circuital.

br00ke

gah .. i'm still reeling. i just wrote an e.mail to a friend that wanted details and it took me right back. i can't wait for this to air .. no matter how dorky i look rocking out in the front (yeah i'm a little nervous about seeing myself on tv, eek!) .. our faces were worn out at the end from all the smiling. i wish you all were there

Nice recap for us without giving it all away. Penny thank you for the text updates! I am so glad you two got to go and nice charm Bluesky, not surprised in the least. Did you give them chocolate and a smile?  :)

Can't wait to see this air and bug you guys for the details they will surely have to edit out. Sounds incredibly emotional, layers pulled, words spoken and hearts open.

subinai

this sounds so awesome. can't wait to see this. hope nothing ends up on the cutting room floor!!

what is the story behind dondante? was this mentioned in an earlier interview?

TSarge

I don't know if he had mentioned it in an interview before, but I think it was well known that the song was about a friend of his / former bandmate who took his own life. I won't recap what he said yesterday, so you can enjoy it on the show, but it was very emotional and very beautiful.

Great stuff people, SO happy for you guys just getting in, but getting up front even! As for the Dondante story, I consider that part of the public domain by now, and now I see TSarge spilling the specific beans -- anyone seeking more on it can surely find it in old threads.
"...it's gonna be great -- I mean me coming back with the band and playing all those hits again"

TSarge

Well I didn't spill too much!! That information could be found on the forums, on google, or even on Wikipedia.
