If I'm ever blessed enough to own some acreage for myself, I've always wanted a family rooster. Granted, I'll probably shoot it, and eat it, because any good, natural cock only lives to spur the hell out of you and wake you up early, but... still... it's part of my dream.

And they're actually really beautiful creatures.

They come in all colors of the earth, and there's all sorts of species.

One of my fav things is to work out really hard in the gym (I mean really hard, until my muscles ache to the point that it hurts to raise a glass of water afterwards) & then come home & sink a couple of ready prepared soft-bolied eggs. I feel like Rocky Balboa!  ;)

But fresh eggs from your own chickens? Wow!!! Hats off to all you home-grown-hippies!!!

Much respect  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
God will forgive them. He'll forgive them and allow them into Heaven.....I can't live with that.

That's cool RC! How old are your girls?

So cute.  Congrats, man.  What species did you end up with?  I don't have chickens but know a lot of people who do and you're in for a great experience.  I hope to get some chicks some days!  ;)

our chicks are growing like crazy, changing almost daily.  I'll have to post some more pics soon.  We have Aracaunas, Rhode Island Red, and Barred Rock.

TheBigChicken

At first I wanted Rhode Island Reds but non available. I  have Silver Wyandotte. Four to be exact and they ARE growing EVERY day..using the chicken poop for our fertilizer 8-)   Hey Walterfredo did you get all your chicks at the same time and are they communal?

Some would say to compost that shit  :D

But either way.  Chicken poop and basic bedding makes good compost.  If you're not eating what you're growing then by all means throw it on there.

We didn't get them all at exactly the same time, but pretty close.  We initially got 4 Aracaunas because that was all we could find.  Several days later I located some other options and we picked up 1 each of the Rhode Island Red and Barred Rock (aka Plymouth Rock).  We really don't have room for 6, will probably give 2 away once they get a bit bigger.  They are all the same age, and are communal.  The coop we've built is sort of on sliders and we will be moving them around the yard so they can scatter their poo and pick at different areas of the lawn.  We have 2 big dogs, one of which I know will mack the chickens in a heartbeat given the chance, this is why we can't just let them run about in the yard.  This weekend I'm going to have to set up an electric fencing around the coop...zap!  Don't really want to do it, but I know what will happen if I don't.   Kaweah (dog) already killed my daughter's rabbit a couple years back.

If you want some instant comedy, go find a worm or caterpillar and toss it into the lot, they go nuts.  We've been picking caterpillars out of the garden and tossing them to the chicks....the fight is on!  One will snag it and and then run like mad to try and eat it in a safe place while the others gang up and try to steal it away, it can go on for some time and is pretty damn amusing.  The Barred Rock has already established dominance.....while being the smallest of the lot.

That sounds so awesome.

round 2!

those are going to make some tasty chicken nuggets.

walterfredo

nah, they're gonna make some tasty eggs (and eventually, some tasty stock/soup).

I do have a good friend who raises chickens for meat, and we do help with the slaughter of them....and those do indeed make tasty nuggets.

OH MY GOODNESS!!!  Haven't been on in awhile..... glad to see the chickies, Big Chickie!!!  (and fredo!)  How cool!!  The chicks at my school have finally made their way off-campus back to my teacher's property (she was having someone fix her coop more securely)  But they were getting awful big and awful adorable!!!

Glad to see all the great healthy little babies, congrats everyone!!!  :D
