I had to share this with all of you, as it seems no one understands the significance of this moment.
Last week I took my daughter for a long drive through the virginia mountains. It was beautiful and the views were breathtaking. We drove through Caswell county (where ROOTS was based on) and saw all the old plantation houses and even found a roadside Alpaca farm! The entire trip, I had Circuital playing quietly in the background as to not be intrusive, but to add to my own personal enjoyment of the moment.
You see, my daughter is 16, and even though we share almost all tastes in all things, MMJ is just the one thing she has never "gotten" in any form. Just like Pink Floyd. She doesn't hear the "purpose" and being that it doesn't fall into pop music formulaic styles, it loses her attention. When I put them on she usually just rolls her eyes, grabs her ipod and heads for her room.
BUT... Yesterday morning I was taking her to her first day of work at her first summer job and she was so happy and excited. I loved seeing her looking so alive in the backseat, smiling and excited about her new job. So I casually put on WONDERFUL and just decided to soak up the moment. The song rang like crystal from the speakers and it just seemed like one of those perfect moments in time. Cody and I started singing as usual, but I swore I was hearing another harmony or voice. I looked into the rearview and there she was, staring out the window, looking so beautiful and inrospective, singing every word. It blew my mind. And as the song unfolded it ended up with the 3 of us in full blast, flat out singing mode, and my face was covered in tears.
When we stopped the car she said "I really LOVE that song!!! And that "Outta my system" one too!"
And I thought she'd stopped listening.
Just thought I'd share this emotional family MMJ moment. LOL
Love to you all. :) :)
Why does my mind blow to bits everytime they play that song?

Dude, I feel ya!  My 12 year old daughter has been hearing the music for years but hasn't really shown much interest.  In the car she would  put her earphones in.

So i decided to drag her to Lexington for the meet and greet.  She lit up when she got in front of the boys and got that record signed.  Huh,  I never knew.  She was so exited to have her picture taken with the record.  The picture was then posted on CD Central's website (front page) for weeks.  She bragged to all her friends at school and her music teacher.

She now has all the albums in her ipod, and since has watched all videos I have provided for her.

I will be taking here to the Indy show in August for her first rock show ever!  I don't think she will be dissapointed.

Y'all got any disco ball back there?

Awesome Rusty!! I think we tend to forget we live in a world now where the distance between artist and fan is so vast. Seeing they were "real" gave her such a feeling of connection. I wish more bands payed closer attention to their fanbase instead of it being all business and image. MMJ are one of those rareities. ENJOY THE SHOW WITH HER!!!!!  Its gonna be unforgettable.

Wonderful Story...

I have 2 girls, one is almost 2 and the other is 4. I always have MMJ on so they have become use to it and they actually like to dance to it. Anyways...my 4 year old daughter calls the band "Your Morning Jacket", because I am always saying "My Morning Jacket." Everytime she says this I just have to laugh...

Both of my kids really like MMJ (since they hear it all the time).  My son got them to sign his Nintendo DS at the Meet and Greet at CD Central.  I think that may have been one of the more unusual things they've been asked to sign.
Don't think about all those things you fear.
Just be glad to be here.

That is wonderful.  :)

I have a 7 year old son who is autistic.  He has grown up listening to MMJ and because of his unusual gifts he has pretty much every song memorized, and usually knows which order they are in and doesn't like it if we skip a song  ;D (which is rare but occasionally Two Halves or Into the woods...)  ;D

He also has perfect pitch and harmonizes in a really interesting way.  He is a trip.

Same here!  Lauren, 2.5 yrs. old, is always saying, "Daddy, is this Your Morning Jakcket?"  She also started singing Steam Engine almost a year ago, in baby talk, and just 2 days ago was singing Holdin' on to Black Metal.  I've overheard my 9 year old, Katherine, singing Black Metal in the shower.  And Maddie, 7, got to meet Jim James at Newport, got her picture with him, and hugged him- practically knocking him over.  All of my girls have learned to like MMJ.  I, on the other hand, have yet to find a way to enjoy most of their music.
The fact that my heart's beating is all the proof you need.

Having a 16 yo daughter myself, I see the beauty of this event.  I have also loved the lyrics from Slow, Slow about daddy singing just for you...perfect lyrics.

Really nice stories!  Thanks for sharing them.  The power of music to bring people together is amazing.  Wonderful is such a great song and it got a lot richer for me after hearing Jim's intentions behind it on Storytellers.  Jim has such a big heart and a great vision of how this world could be, a true idealist in the tradition of John Lennon.  I'm glad the members of MMJ feel like they are in a peaceful place right now and I'm super-appreciative they are expressing that in such a great song like Wonderful.  Those opening lines speak to me so powerfully about all kinds of things in my life.  I predict my wife and I will be blubbering when we hear them live.

Took a long time to get here
If it would have been easy
I would not have cared"

Maybe she can only get into songs intended for Muppet projects?  ;D

Great stories everyone, I'm 16 and I love this band.

Wow! Reading all of these wonderful gushing stories really has me grinning ear to ear. Each one means so much in itself. I too had another moment tonight as I was at one end of the house ( and in typical me fashion) randomly sang out a line to a song at full blast. Iwas suddenly Patrick in the shower scene and shrieked out "HOLDING ON TO BLACK METALLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!" And couldn't help but laugh my ass off when I heard "BLACK METALLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!" echo back as she did the response part. Our kids all sound "wonderful". :-)

I love this thread!

For me its more my friends and family that generally don't really get into MMJ. I brought one of my friends with me to the Chicago Auditorium show last night. After hearing my friend for a few weeks say that "Holdin on to Black Metal" was kinda lame, I caught him singing along to the song at the show.
When we were driving home he asked to put "Holdin on to Black Metal" on in the car and confessed the song won him over! lol
MMJ strikes again! haha
