this argument is so tired.

setlists haven't varied from night to night since 2003.

not sure why people think it's going to magically start happening now.
Is there a doctor in the house tonight?

Luna Moth

half the people there probably had never seen the band before, others once or twice.. why would they change it up?

Luna Moth

TWTHS, Laylow, It Beats, Dondante
half the people there probably had never seen the band before so its EASILY a solid setlist.  if setlists are really that big of a deal to you follow a jamband, i do, and my spirit still flows away more with the Jacket even with the same songs, they're great.

Sure it's fun to log on and check setlists, and seeing a curveball is fun while we follow vicariously, but to say YAWN or complain at the setlists is silly.

The guys are going with what they think their best lineup is, or what they feel like playing.   I'm just making #s up, but I bet 40% have never seen them and 55% haven't seen them since last time they were local.

It's like going to eat at your favorite restaurant every night and complaining the menu doesn't change.   as e_wind posted, it's an easy solution - don't go so much!

Take Boston, for example.   If someone went each time they headlined here in my hometown, they would have seen them in Dec 06, Sep 08, and Aug 11.   My most "normal" definitions of MMJ fan that would be pretty high - ie put them in the top 5% or so.   And each time was a pretty different setlist, in 08 he/she would have seen 13 songs not in the 20 heard in 08.   Then in '11, 12 songs not heard in 08, including 10 not heard either previous show.

So I've come to terms with the option of "go once per tour" and see a different show, or see them more often and live with a lot of repeats- but enjoy the friends, great music, and subtle differences.   I know which I choose!  ;D ;D

Now when I saw Tool in 06, 07, and 09, and they played pretty much the exact setlist, in same order... THAT sucked.

I see both sides of this.  My main issue, though, is how long can they keep playing the same shows and with sincerity?  Geeta, you bring up the metaphor of going to the same restaurant every night for the fans that see them multiple times.  The band pretty much eats at that resaurant EVERY night.  At what point does it get old for them and they just start going through the motions?  It's got to, eventually.

Interesting you bring up Tool because I loved them for years, but I feel like Maynard hates Tool now, and moreso, Tool fans.  I feel like it's just a vessel for him to finance the things his does enjoy - Merkin Vineyards, side projects like Puscifer.   I would hate to see Jim or anyone in MMJ become as cynical as Maynard.

On the other hand, the last show I went to was Tuscaloosa.  Looking back, it was one of the more "boring" setlists they played this tour.  However, I had a great time and probably lost my shit more at that show than any other I have been to.  It wasn't until I got home and read the setlist that I realized how basic it was.

I think I just feel like it's what you make of it, I'm just concerned with how long they can keep it up and still "bring it" every night.  Shit, I'm rambling again.  How about the Bama/LSU game this weekend, huh?

And, Vegas, you are absolutely right.  This argument is tired. And pointless.

MMJCOBRA

Awesome set to me. Love the early freak out, slow into dondante had to be epic and it beats 4 u. Plus wonderful, which I failed to see the four times I saw them this year.

Only thing j would change is sub in highly suspicious for black metal.

All this complaining about same old set list and none of you nooooBs say anything about the new songs?  >:( >:(

Anyone who went to the show care to comment on these new gems?

Operate Nearest Fire Alarm

Report to Assembly Point
Don Not Use Lifts

New album maybe? It's almost like a rock opera, very Tommyesque. The cool thing is the obvious acronym of the song titles: A O L R D

Avalanche
Of
Loud
Rock
Debris
Be the cliché you want to see in the world.

Well, actually I'd say its more like the band are the chefs who cook the same menu every night and the fans who show up to each show are the ones who eat it.  ;D ;D ;D

As a chef, sometimes its fun to cook the same thing night after night.  You get to tune in to the subtle differences night to night in the same dish and really fine tune it.  Yeah, after a while of cooking the same thing, it can get boring.  Hopefully they change it up before it does, but I'd guess they are not bored playing these songs yet.

Another Chef on the board, i can relate to you on your comparison of the music(band) to food reference.
