Using historic footage the film looks at the evolution of American music and the artists who created it and pulls back the curtain (in a very creative way) to expose the sad truth behind today's "artificial" music stars. "The reality is that superficiality is in," says Marsalis. "And depth and quality is kind of out." Inspired by the death of his brother, director Andrew Shapter and his crew traveled thousands of miles, visiting dozens of cities, speaking with hundreds of fans, journalists, record executives and musicians while searching for "real" American music. Yeah overall it was very informative and entertaining (I think it was worth watching just for the Macy Gray performance  ;))

Hey guys,

I saw this DVD several months back at a screening at a small local music venue.  It was a little awkward, cause when Jim popped up in blue blockers (TM) i said "oh shit" and it was dead quiet (and, as per the usual, i was the only one that had even heard of them let alone recognized them). As MMJ fanatic mentioned, little face time and no performance, but the movie is very well done. Interviews with a lot of greats, plenty of Viacom bashing, etc.  For me, it's worth watching to see how they take a hot girl who CAN NOT SING, put her in a studio, and with the incredible power of current digital audio workstations, the song comes out just like anything you would hear on the radio. It really demonstrates how producers/sound engineers are the real talent in current pop music and not the "artists."

Just watched this in my advanced entertainment law class.

Loved it. Pat, Bo, and Yim are in it for about 5 secs, but it's worth watching overall. Makes me wish someone at ATO would have responded to my emails begging for an unpaid internship just so I can be a part of the magic.

Either way, go get it, have a few beers, and then get angry at Clear Channel

Thank you for sharing.  Just watched it.  And wow - on so many levels.

(Side note - have been following Doyle Bramhall II since Arc Angels and have to agree with Eric Clapton about him.  He's been reduced to a highly sought after session/touring player in the last decade plus - but he should have been so much more.)
