Yes. It was. (sans all five nights of t5, but it destroys any 2 nights of t5.)

The 61 songs we saw in 2 days, the tailgating, the fun, the people. It was unreal. Until next time, chumps.

night two was probably the 2nd longest MMJ show ever, and just barely behind Roo08, if you consider the break during roo.

It was an amazing surprise that they not only played the entire setlists, but they actually added an extra song.

These days could've only been bettered if some of my oldest pals from this forum were able to make it, I told Caroline a couple times tht I was wishing Christine, Jeff and Beth, and Eric could've been there

And most importantly, we got some JOHN OATS ALL UP IN US

Thanks Eric.  We sure missed you guys.  Many of us spent the whole night watching and chatting on line and we were all blown away.  Saw you a bunch but saw Caroline more than any other Jacket peep.  What an unbelievable event to watch.  Had to be completely unforgettable to be there.  Can't imagine better.

Thanks Eric.  Sorry to miss it, but took much comfort in knowing good pals like you were there. We did get to see a couple of shots of you,Caroline, and others. The broadcast, chat, and seeing so many friendly faces there definitely made not being there easier to take for me. I was living vicariously through you guys!

No question the two shows rank right up there in Jacketdom.  Every time I think I've seen it all from these guys, they come back and top it. You and Caroline certainly have seen some greatness in the past couple of weeks.  From the overpass to Red Rocks, it's been quite a ride so far. Hope it continues, and we share some more shows soon.

Really jealous of everyone that was able to witness this spectacle in person...definitely two signature shows.

As insane as night one was, I do think night 2 even managed to top it. Agree with Eric that this may not top T5 as a whole, but both of these shows blew any given night of T5 away in my opinion.

So great to share them with old friends and new ones well.  You guys are the greatest, and I can't wait to see some of you again for Merriweather.

Having not been to T5 or Roo08/04 I can't say for sure, but I'm going to say that if it wasn't the absolute best then its damn near the top of that list.  But I don't see how there could have ever been any shows, anywhere, that were better than the spectacle we just witnessed at red rocks.  The crystal clear sound, the backdrop, the weather, the forum peeps...and THE BAND WAS ON FIRE!  They were relentless.  It was a neverending barrage of all the best tunes, played better than ever. Absolute perfection.  Pics to come...

  • Re: Was JFW2 the greatest Jacket event ever?  Sun, Aug  5, 2012 at 10:37 AM     Living just north of Denver, the weather here has been incessant, between 97 and 105 degrees for weeks now. Until Saturday. It's rained almost every day, just enough to make it a pain in the ass if you work outside. Until this weekend. The moon coming up over the stage, the cool winds, clear skies, last night was the best night for this amazing show.

Last year's show at RR was my favorite of 2011, so if these shows are ranked so highly by the hard-core, I am lucky indeed. It's the magic of Red Rocks!

My friends who saw Crazy Horse in ABQ on Friday say it was no soft stuff, pure brutal hard rock "like having two hours of rough sex", so if you are sticking around we are in for some more face melting Red Rocks magic the next two nights.

I totally agree with ya, zanjam.  Even though the set lists were pretty amazing all by themselves, what really made these shows special was the intensity of the performances.  ON FIRE!!  Carl was channeling Jimmy Page, playing like a true 70s guitar god.  And when Jim straps on the Flying V, look out, you are about to be pummeled by a head-banging rock fest!  I loved watching Tommy grooving while standing right in front of Pat's drums, its such a cool visual.  And I like how Bo was getting into it too, some real nice textures coming from over his way.

I was digging the way the wind was blowing things around on Fri night, luckily we were close enough that it didn't wreak havoc with the sound. Red Rocks is a special place for sure.

So much fun hanging out with you guys, as always, its over too soon and there is not enough time for hanging out as I'd like.  Show day logistics can be challenging.  Can't wait for next year!

Whoever above said that the Neil set was like rough sex may be right. However, Jacket was the longest, sweetest foreplay ever. In fact, there wasn't too much energy left for Neil. I felt bad that as much as I enjoyed Neil, I just couldn't work up the energy to rock as hard as we did on Friday and Saturday. I can't wait to see that Saturday night set.

Besides the venue and thi community, it really was the no repeats and the love the band gave to each and every song. Each song had such energy but played with nuance.
T5 was and still is a very important time for me and many from the forum, each album, 5 shows and a meeting and bonding of many forum members. These shows raised it to the next level. Not sure what the boys could do next to top these nights!

my thoughts exactly.  i have been thoroughly, and most unexpectedly, blown away.  i've already watched the axs video TWICE and am anxiously awaiting the official bootlegs - hopefully in time to accompany my family and i on our 4.5 hour drive tomorrow to go camping for the rest of the week.

i have to say it was an honor, a thrill and a goddamn pleasure to see all of your smiling face again this year.  it was nice to put some faces to names this time.  i just wish there was more time to chat.  being pulled from line to line for early entry, soundcheck, etc. really cut down on the tailgate time for me.  jacket fans really are some of the nicest peeps out there.
  •      Fully avatar Fully     Re: Was JFW2 the greatest Jacket event ever?  Tue, Aug  7, 2012 at  1:12 PM     Here it is Tuesday afternoon and I am frustrated because I can't convey the magnitude of what I witnessed to anyone around me. I feel like the world stopped spinning because of these two shows. Seriously. They were both that momentous for me. The experience was just - I don't know how to say it - it was just earth shattering. The most amazing band I can see put on two of the most amazing shows they've ever performed in the most amazing place ever. Why aren't there headlines all over the news about this? (I know, It's just music.) But really, this is like winning the superbowl - but more awesome. Those of us who still have more shows to watch. I can only hope they will be close to this pinnacle. If they start topping those two shows - hell, I'll have to leave my family and just find a way to follow them all everywhere.

  •      chaslil avatar chaslil     Re: Was JFW2 the greatest Jacket event ever?  Tue, Aug  7, 2012 at 11:54 PM     (I am cross-posting separate reviews for MMJ and Neil Young to four message boards I follow and also sending to my concert pals. Some of this will be elementary to you but it's not intended just for MMJ fans- You can check my Neil review in the Other Music section.)

I just finished my endurance test of four nights in a row at Red Rocks shows . Red Rocks is a destination venue for the hard-core fans of any band that plays there, and this was no exception for the fans of My Morning Jacket (I am guessing at least a few hundred) and Neil Young (a few thousand? It seemed like everyone I met was from out of state).
All four nights had gorgeous weather,  nothing better than a summer night at Red Rocks. i am sure the acoustics were excellent all the way to the top.

My Morning Jacket has been in my wheelhouse ever since I stumbled upon them performing a cover of  "A Quick One" on a Bonnaroo webcast in 2006. They are a band very much like my other current obsession, Grace Potter & the Nocturnals, in that they have nearly zero visibility among casual rock fans (aka 'civilians'), and frustratingly little radio airplay to boost their popularity, despite many great songs and incendiary live shows. Yet through incessant touring and good support acts, MMJ had gotten to the point of headlining Red Rocks Friday & Saturday, this time supported by Trombone Shorty and Band of Horses.

MMJ was my favorite concert of 2011, so when they announced these two shows, with no repeat songs, I just had to move my family vacation return flight up a few hours on Friday so I could get to Red Rocks in time for the Friday show. My friend Joe from the Pearl Jam board (Guacamole Joe) and MMJ board (JoeV) was kind enough to hold a 5th row GA seat right in front of Jim James. On Saturday, I returned with my 22 y.o. daughter, who loves my copy of "Evil Urges", and we got there in time for the early admittance for Fan Club members, securing 8th row, next to the soundboard, my favorite spot at Red Rocks. I like these fan friendly efforts of MMJ as they grow in popularity.

I won't bother with a set list, since you won't know their songs, and frankly I'm too old to learn all their titles, I just know I loved them. They played 61 total songs in two nights: 2:40 the first night and 3:30 the second night (until 1:00 a.m.!) Living in Denver, I am spoiled by the inspiring "Red Rocks effect" on performers here and it certainly seems to always inspire MMJ.. The second show was the second longest in MMJ history, and from the comments I have read on the MMJ board, these two shows are being considered among their most epic performances. I can't argue with that. Jim James has one of the most amazing voices in rock, and this band shows such infectious enthusiasm for each other, often replicating the "Crazy Horse" huddle while they jam.

MMJ has a whole catalog of songs only their fans know, but IMO they are instantly likeable. They also played some incredible covers, including Rocket Man (Elton John); Tyrone (Erykah Badu); Never Tear Us Apart (INXS- soulful passion!); Rock the Casbah (first time and great encore song);  Isn't it a Pity (George Harrison- excellent jam!!!); Oh Sweet Nuthin (Velvet Underground- Rocking!) It makes No Difference (The Band) and Move on Up (Curtis Mayfield -with support from horn section of Trombone Shorty and a cameo with John Oates (Hall & Oates))

The Sunday show was broadcast live on AXS (formerly HDNet) and will be rebroadcast in the future.  (I can see myself and my daughter in a few spots!) Check it out if you get the chance.

See you freaks at the ATL show (and soundcheck) in 2.5 weeks!

And here are the two RR posters plus one created by MtnGrl's hubby and of course Gideon is in the picture.

  •      Crispy avatar Crispy     Re: Was JFW2 the greatest Jacket event ever?  Fri, Aug 10, 2012 at  6:32 AM     I haven't said much yet about these shows, but what I was thinking at the time was that the Constant Stream of Holy Fuck continues, and at a level that just keeps getting higher every time.

As I told Cookie later, I have never seen a "bad" MMJ show, but she has been spoiled by the three that she has seen (Forecastle, RRx2). Hell of a way to start.

I have enjoyed other Neil Young shows more than this week's two shows, but part of it is probably the hangover after MMJ.

100% agreed and I cannot wait to rehash it all with you over a beer.  I'm still in mourning that it's over...

Give me a butt load of reverb on this one - just pile it on.
  •      AHaro avatar AHaro     Re: Was JFW2 the greatest Jacket event ever?  Fri, Aug 10, 2012 at  1:50 PM     I thought RR 11' was pretty cool until I witnessed RR 12' in all its musical glory. Holy sheeeeet.

A week has transpired since I was at RR and I'm still *digesting* the magnitude of both shows; as I didn't think Friday could top Saturday. Yes, both shows were transcendently outrageous and will, in my opinion, be at the forefront of MMJ live historical acknowledgement and accolades. I feel fortunate beyond extreme measure that I was able to be a part of two sensational evenings with two kickass posters to prove it.

I'm going to have to reassess my top 5 concerts of all-time as MMJ set the precedent in live show amazeballsness. ( I acknowledge that "amazeballsness" is not a word but, quite appropriate.)

I look forward to hearing my "official bootlegs" whenever they're ready and rocking out for years to come.

    Thank you MMJ!!
Rockin' to MMJ since '06 at the HOB!

Hey - I just wanted to make sure that this thread survived the switch. I don't know if this is the best way to move these things, but I'm open for suggestions.
