I'm a HUGE fan of them from back when they were tiny. My second Felice Brothers show in 2008 featured them as an opening act and they blew me away. Now they've grown to be bigger and more popular/known than Felice Brothers but they are still great friends and tour together at times.

As for listening...I love all their work. Their first two albums are really well done but are more of a solo-type of venture with lead singer John McCauley basically doing the heavy lifting. Some of songs are a bit softer on the album compared they are played live but they're still great.

But the Black Dirt Sessions and beyond are really where they started to turn into a more straight up rock and roll band....reminding me of classic acts (check out their cover of Maybellene). One of the reasons for this is the addition of Ian O'Neill as a lead guitarist. He had played in a few bands before but when they added him to Deer Tick and eventually got Rob on piano/saxophone then they really started to gel.

"Mange" from Black Dirt Sessions is an absolute BEAST when played live. Below I'll post a video of the extended song from a show a few years ago.

Another favorite of mine is "Clownin' Around" from the newest LP "Divine Providence". This song is a rare chance to hear the drummer take lead vocals and it's the most beautiful sounding song about a serial killer/rapist that I've ever heard.

wtf is the antibalas
"On the 27th, HT faves Deer Tick will open for MMJ. On the 28th, the large afrobeat act Antibalas will support Jim James and Co. while Black Mountain, North Carolina's Floating Action serve as opener on the 29th. Tickets for all three shows are still available though three-day passes are sold out."

Naysayers be damned, these shows just got even more fun

e_wind

would've preferred something different, but can't say that wont be fun for an opener. plus, 2/3 of my wishes are true. pretty cool

I just checked them out on iTunes & YouTube...they sound like a funky cross between Hot Tuna & MM&W

Very cool...it will be a dance party on the floor

plus it just makes sense to have an opener that includes a horn section

Damn I wish I had tickets to the first night, or that Deer Tick would play night 3. Would absolutely love to see them. I guess I need to get familiar with Floating Action.

If you like afrobeat at all, you'll like Antibalas...very surprising choice for an opener!

Also recently got word that Marco Benevento is doing a late show (post phish) on the 27th I think...only downside is that it's in the city.  Still might make a run for the last train for that show though.  I don't get too many chances to see Marco and by the time that show ends, I can catch the first train back to Port Chester.

I wonder what other late shows will be announced...

So that means we might get Dancefloors, Highly Suspicious, All Night Long, Move on Up, and what else on night 2?
