that sounds great... another option (that i've found a little easier) is to play down at the 9th fret starting on the low e-string  - same notes, just on different strings - playing it here makes it easier to play the barre chords (F#minor and C#minor) in the intro  - i would also recommend playing the song with a capo on 1, if you wanna play the open C, F, and G chords during the verse and chorus...

 any questions, let me know...

cmccubbin25

what is the opening chord that jim plays in the live shows when they start this song?

sweatboard

It's capoed way up high when Jim plays it live.  Like the seventh fret.  It's a c# to open though I believe.
There's Still Time.........

yeah, i think Jim might either capo it at 6 or 9 for live. I can't remember which.

9 would make sense, but then if he capoed it at 6 he could play the C# chord using a G-chord shape.
The river is moving. The blackbird must be flying.

Clarkwork

I think it is the 9th fret.  If you want Jim to just teach you the song, watch the KCRW performance.  They have the camera right on his guitar and you can pick almost everything up.
If you don't know for yourself, how could you ever know for me....

Kimbos_Evil_Bread

That's a great idea and I did just that Clackwork and here's what i found out:

Jim: Capo 9th fret

intro:
e----------------------------------------------------------------------------
B------------------1-1-----1-----------------------------------------------
G------------------2-2-----2--------------------------1-1---1--------
D------------------2-2-----2--------------------------2-2---2----------- :II
A----------2--0---0-0-----0-------------------0-----2-2---2-----------
E-000-3--------------------------000-3---------0--0-0---0------------

chords being
E x 221
A x 222 (only an Am{221] during hawaii five-o riff)
B x 2444

And carl's part right after jim goes, "Off the record, c'mon!.." is in reg tuning:

e--13^99999--13^99999--14-13-11/9-11----------------
B------------------------------------------------------999-9/14---

e--13^99999--13^99999--14-13-11/9--9/ (16)---------------
B--------------------------------------------------------------------------
